Michael Vick: “You can’t design a defense to stop me”

The Eagles will need Michael Vick’s confidence going into game number one in St. Louis against the Rams. The offensive line which will start the season against St. Louis hasn’t practiced together yet. They will be starting two rookies on the “O” line.

Vick hasn’t been throwing passes to DeSean Jackson or Jeremy Maclin very long. It’s been a few weeks to Jackson and a week and a half to Maclin. They must be productive together without the benefit of very much practice.

I think Vick was talking to his teammates as much as he was talking to Michael Silver of Yahoo Sports, when he talked about the prospects of a defense stopping him and his offensive teammates.

“I’ve been hearing that for years. You can’t design a defense to stop me, especially not on this team,” Vick said. “We have so many weapons, and some teams have tried to make that their primary focus. That’s when we run up the score.”

Vick laughed at the chances a team could stop him by using a spy defender to take away his ability to create big plays with his legs.

“I don’t even notice a spy now,” he said. “The last spy I saw was versus Jacksonville last year. DeSean ran a shallow cross right past him and scored. LeSean, DeSean – those guys will beat the spy. Maybe it used to be an option before, but I’m not that guy anymore. I’m getting the ball out.”

Remember what I told you about how important it will be that Vick develops a connection with Brent Celek. The tight end will always be there to avoid throwing a few incompletions a row.

I can and it’s rather simple
Rush 4 players and only have the DE’s stay in their lanes to keep Vick in the Pocket, the DE’s don’t even attempt to sack VIck, they stay out wide to keep containment , then drop 7 players back in to Coverage with a Cover 2 on the back end to negate D-Jax’s deep routes and make Vick beat you with 5-7-10 yard passing routes where reading the proper coverages and accuracy will come into play.. Can Vick and the Play-Calling stay patient enough over a course of a game not to force passes and plays when they are not there and only take what the Defense is giving them.. This is how I would defense Vick and the Eagles offense and would take my chances this way instead of rushing and blitzing and having VIck make big passes on the run or break containing and scramble for big plays.. I would take my chances on keeping him in the pocket and eventually frustrating him and forcing him into some bad passes/decisions.. I would use this scheme on any scrambling Type of QB whether is was McNabb of yesteryear or Vick today and CAm Newton for the future. Take away a scramblers legs and take your chances with their arms & proper readings..

the only problem with your theory is the DEs have never been able to contain vick i thnk vick smalll size makes him a little more difficult for DEs to contain couple with his ability.. and underneath crossing routes are the easiest get open when the Dbs drop back.. theyre easy throws to make when you have fast recievers .. sort of like what the patriots do with smaller recievers..

my hope- andy figures out a way to use vick wisely. Use the friggin run game andy. You have 3 quality running backs. I heard somewhere that the birds ran the most screens last year. For some reason…. i find that hard to believe. I want more runs and screens.

Yeah Stevo I’m hoping the same thing too…Paulman, are you really a true Eagles fan or just one of those”in between if we win great”, but if we lose “I told you so” types. You don’t seem like a true fan that lashes out because he’s frustrated or angry at the team for a bonehead play or a stupid mistake in draft/free agent judgement etc. Why would you say or be interested in our opponents wanting to stop our QB. You say the most ridiculous crap man. By the way, nobody cares how you would defend Vick and the crew paulman; Get off them meds man and come back to reality.

Yes Rocko, I am a Die-Hard Eagle fan and that initial post was for the Eagles and Vick to get a heads up on whats coming down the picke (which I am sure they already know) but teams will not put a “Sack-Rush” on Vick, but rather rush 3 or 4 DL and keep him in the pocket and let him try to beat Defenses from the pocket.. Teams will drop 7-8 players into coverage and try to confuse him. This isn’t rockert science or anything that a Defenseive COordinatore wouldn’t put in place.. Take Vicks best attributes away (his scramblings and throwing on the run once a play is broken down or flat out just scrambling for 20-30-50 Yards ..

Pman’s comment is not crazy. It’s exactly what the Bears did last year and it worked. The 4 linemen not only stayed in their lanes, but got sacks. It’s as much a challenge for the coaches to take what the defense is giving instead of looking deep and having Vick eat the ball.
There will be plenty of blitzes to test how the offensive line can protect Vick, but the Tampa 2 defenses should give the Eagles a good test.

You are correct Jphalines
Drop your Safeties deep and Keep Vick in the Pocket and as a DL, keep your lanes and get your arms up to block his vision and throwing lanes to the qucik slants… This will probably be exactly what Spags will do with his Defense most of the time, but he will have some Blitz from the Outside be a DB which the Vikings were so effective with and the Eagles and Vick seem to have no asnswer for it.

Even with that, we should have beaten the Bears.

drummer, you are correct. It’s related to the amount of really bottom feeder ads on his site, which is obviously related to the viruses/trojans/other malware that’s always floating around this site. It ruined an old computer of mine and now my new one with up to date virus protection alerts me that I’m treading into unsafe territory everytime I come to this site. The only logical conclusion is that Garry is content with it. He sees this as a side project that keeps money and notoriety flowing his way, but by no means is it a priority for him to keep this at a high level. Also see the typos/horrible grammar, repetitive pictures just to have images…etc. etc. etc.

It is what it is, and I don’t put too much blame on Garry, it’s just how it is.

Vick lost that game versus the Bears when he threw that Pick and the EAgles Defense made J Cutler play like th e2ns coming of Joe Montana, Eagles had no chancse and were manhandled thru 3 periods of that game 31-13 I believe and scored a couple of late cheap TD’s once the games was lready decided (Similar to the Packers Games which were not as close as the final score indicated)
The Eagles were also manhandled at the line of scrimmage versus the VIkings so they did not handle the NFL North Division very well las year

Patriots release Pro-Bowl Brandon Merriweather (watch the Cowboys pick him up) and WR Brandon Tate who never lived up to his potential as a high Draft sselection a few years back, now Merriwaether is a player so I am not sure if something else is going on behind the scenes but he will be pick-ed up quickly.

Ok Ok Ok Paulman, it’s not like I’m going to come here and change the way you see things (like many others on here who’ve tried to; unsuccessfully); though I kind of agree with your comments about Celek on the other story. I think he’s just not the it factor at tight end. I believe D Lee comes here and may outshine Celek.

Celek may the next Great W. H. added to the list for a soon to be the next exit outta here.. He needs to get down with the “young gunz” and stop being too nice and get a lil nasty with his attitude and play. He needs to step outside of the of AR’s “good guy” image and make defenders fear his style of play – get a little mean and make a name for himself like whitten and cooley etc.

As of today Schiller.. there is no rush to move Graham to IR at this point (But I would say he will end up there at the end of PUP time or sooner depnding if other players get injured..

The PUP is 4-7 weeks. If he isn’t ready by then, he’ll get put on I R. Which all of us with a brain know is more likely anyway. He isn’t going to be ready until game 10-12. But blind faith Andy knows more than all Doctors. So, his stubborn @$$ will keep him on the PUP list, until the inevitable happens. Just like what happened with M. Jackson, & Abiamiri. Never healers, that he hung onto far too long! I hope Graham heals, but he will never be the same. I know, I had the same exact 2 injuries, & it ended my college baseball days. It will keep him out until November. It won’t fully heal until 2-2.5 years. Andy bring him to the Lourdes fountain in France. Maybe that will help. Stubborn rockhead!

how many Phils losses have occured in the 9th Inning or in extra Innings in the last 2 Weeks — They were like 62-2 after holding a lead after the 8th Inning and all of a sudden they have 5-6 losses in the other teams last At-Bats..
This overworked Trio in the BUllpen (Stutes,Bastardo & Madson) are showing some tinks in their armor… Watch old-timers Lidge and Oswalt shine out of the Bullpen come Playoff time to save the day…

With the offensive line not yet a proven commodity it seems stupid that Vick would start blowing smoke
before the season starts. One good hit would stop him in a heartbeat, so shut up all of a sudden not so MR. humble.

wow, interesting Big E. I agree with both of your posts. My biggest concern with Mike Vick all along was his ego. He’s still got that, and it can ruin him – obviously I hope it doesn’t, but it could.

Saints open at Green Bay, home versus the Bears and Texans and then 3 Road Games vs the Jaguars,Panthers and TB Bucs in their first 6 games..

Packers have home vs Saints, then road games at the Panthers and Bears, then home vs the Broncos, on road vs the Falcons and then home vs the RAms
which should be a pretty good start for them out of the gate ..

Falcons have a tough schedule out of the gate and we should find out how good they really are or are not..

They open at the Bears, home vs the Eagles, then on the road vs TB Bucs, and Seattle, then home vs the Packers, Panthers, then travel to Detroit..

Bears have Falcons at home, then play at New Orleans, then have the Packers and Panthers at home, then a road game at Detroit, a home vs the Vikings andthen a road game vs TB Bucs..
