Michael Vick Throws Two TD’s, But Gets The Job Done With His Legs

Sometimes it’s just a matter of talent. That was the case today when plays broke down for the Birds. Michael Vick was under pressure, the receivers were covered, so he made some runs and some plays, which only he can make. He took off 10 times for 98 yards and those plays cut the heart out of the Rams defense.

“That’s why he got $100 million,” said former Eagles and current Ram safety Quintin Mikell said.

It had to be frustrating for the Rams, when their defense covered all the receivers, put pressure on Vick with their pass rush, only to have him burst out of the pocket with his 4.3 speed to break their backs. His runs today were especially damaging for St. Louis because most of them were for first downs.

“I felt quicker than I ever have before,” Vick said after the game. “It feels great to know I can go lights-out and not have to worry about anything.”

This was by no means a great passing day for Vick, as he completed 14 of 32 passes which is only a 43.8 percentage, but two of those throws were touchdown tosses. He got to ball to LeSean McCoy on a screen pass and he jumped over a tackler on his way to paydirt.

The throw to Jackson was a thing of beauty as he rolled to his left and threw a beautiful touch pass in the back of the end zone and let the speedster run under it.

Effectiveness in the red zone was something that was missing a year ago in the Eagles offense, they had it today, outside of wasting an opportunity to score a touchdown at the end of the first half. I don’t know if it was Andy Reid, Marty Mornhinweg or Vick, but it’s about time Reid’s teams stopped blowing time outs and scoring chances because of confusion of getting a play called..

Say it however you would like, the Eagles passing offense left something to be desired because Vick was sacked three times, while being hurried and pressured all afternoon. The Eagles are playing with fire, if Vick continues to get hit the way he did today.

The talented quarterback made the throws he needed to make when he had to make them, but he worked his magic more with his legs than he did with his arm. Yes he’ll take the win, but he and his offense know they must play much better as the season moves along, if they want to make this a memorable year.

Two of the best throws he made all afternoon trickled through Jackson’s hands. One of the throws he put on Jackson’s hands would have been a long touchdown completion if the wideout had hung onto it. Jackson had gotten a couple of steps on two defenders and there would have been no catching him had he been able to hang onto it.

The other great throw came at the end of the first half, when he hit Jackson in the hands for what would have been a great diving catch. The fleet Jackson had the balls in his hands in the endzone, but it was dislodged when he hit the ground.

Offense is there. Defense is just needs a little work. By week six everything will be set if were healthy. We got soo much better as the game went on. Vick is probably faster at age 31 than he was at 21 when he was a rookie. Dude Is insanse

that’s funny G, “shuffle pass”, was that an Ickey shuffle pass?

IMO, Jackson’s average, at best, hands are one of the reasons he’s a good WR and not a great one and not deserving of top dog $. He drops far too many. Heck, it was the punt slipping through his hands against the Giants last season that just happened to pay off. I won’t be expecting another miss-handled punt to have that outcome ever again. He must focus on improving this.

It was a great performance. The kind that has traditionally been very sucessful against good teams and especially in the playoffs. 43% Fantastic. Loved the fumble too. Just like Brees and Rodgers on Thursday.

Wow the ravens made a statement today, they blew the steelers out!… The cowboys look really good early on, lets hope the jets can pull it together in the second half…

As for the eagles.. i didnt like everything i saw today like the protection early on, i thought vick was gonna get killed but they certainly sured it up as the 2nd quarter into the 2nd half approached… but kelce has got to focus. He seemed to have difficulty today making the calls but it improved as the game went… but this cant continue bc were gonna be playing some top teer teams and this wont fly… But like i said and contiune to, theyre gonna keep improving as we go its gonna be a week to week thing…..

The blindside hits werent vicks fault, the receiver was supposed to chip him at the line and that never happen, its gonna be a coaches point in the film room with the players…

After that long run from steven jackson he went down then cadilac williams came in and run very well, he looked like the old cadilac williams, but if you can recall he had a huge game against us when he played for the bucs… but whats crazy is that our pass defense was our biggest issue last yr not our rush defense, now this yr it seems that our rush defense is the problem… but i ll say this, in the 3rd quarter and on it improved.. but we can see what teams will try to do to us, run run run run then play action and try us deep, but teams will not look to pass all game long like they did last yr to us, theyre not stupid…

ha maybetheycan – you’re funny man. The Eagles won the game, so you can’t hate on the team. But that doesn’t stop you, oh no, you’re a hater’s hater – you hate on desean jacskon who had 100 yards receiving. Ha, if a gorgeous woman handed you a bottle of champagne and a million dollar bill, you’d say “you got me the cheap champagne!?”.

schill – Oh yeah, anyone that critiques the team when they win is automatically a hater in your eyes eh? And, of course, because they won you’ll not have one critique of any player or play from this game because they won, right? I’m not a hater, I didn’t trash him or the team. Did DJax let several excellent passes slip through his hands or not? Yes or no? Did he let a TD slip through his hands? Yes or no. Yeah. I think he’s an excellent receiver that had a boat load of opportunities today but not a great receiver and not deserving of top $ until he improves on his propensity to let passes slip through his hands. How is that hating? I’ll be very disappointed if they don’t find a way to sign the guy and I’ve posted that on this site dozens of times as well as my opinion that, because of his hands and route running he’s not a great receiver without any giving me crap about it. I guess you just can’t handle a balanced view after a win. Too much testosterone surging through those arm chair QB veins?

it pains me to say that the Cowgirls are hardly a pushover tonight and playing far better than I’d hoped. I can’t compare how they’re playing to how the Eagles played today cause it might not be favorable and, because the Eagles won today, that’ll make me hater’s hater…

mtc – Yeah, I guess I am just an ‘enjoy the wins’ guy. I just don’t see the point of your ‘balance’. The goal is to win games, not catch every pass or earn the big contract. I route for the team.

Schill – If you read my post in “It wasn’t a masterpiece” post, you’ll see I wrote, before my “crtique” on this post, that the W was what counted and there was no point in pouring over the focus areas from the game and the team has a week to improve. On this post I was referring to Jackson’s contract “issues” and gave examples why he needs to improve before deserving the top $.

Balance man, balance. Read ’em all before ripping the other posters for one post that you may not agree with and calling all critics haters

mtc – truce man. I mean not harm (or hate if you want, ha). I may be wrong, but I believe you were one who was predicting many problems for the Eagles and other strongly negative things (which I tend to take issue with), before. I may have been a bit wrong about that specific post. Hope you’re enjoying the win and you have a similar feeling about it next week around this time too.

schill – I root for the team too. Do so much that, the when I get to go to the teams, I typically don’t talk very well until Thursday from rooting my team on.
I’ll share a funny story you might enjoy. Many years ago, while living in an old South Jersey bungalow community, my little girl, just old enough to ride her bike around the block without Dad, returned from such a trip while I was watching an early season game with the windows open. She walked in the door and said; Dad, there’s a lot of Eagles fans on this block. I could hear them all cheering as I rode my bike but none are as big a fan as you because I could hear you all the way on the other side of our block. Today, when we both go to games, neither of us talk very well afterward win or lose.

Shady McCoy was great again today as he was most of last season. He is turning into one of the best all around threats in the NFC. It was nice to see them give Dion Lewis a few offensive touches.

Why didnt Mikell blitz like that with us? Smh… All those exotic blitzes did nothing though, then they started fake blitzing then dropping into coverage ahahaha that will never work with this team but spags was trying everything… but vick is special bc if all else fails he will run for huge gains like 17-20 yard gains, that rips the heart out of a defense… I love Vick more than i ever liked donovan for this very reason, he doesnt care how hes percieved whether its a running qb or not… Expect him to have 1,000 yds rushing this yr if he stays healthy, with 30 tds

If Vick couldn’t run like he can the game was a loss
I only hope he/they don’t get in that mode as a standard procedure
Maybe as the O line jells it will not be needed
Only hope it happens before he goes down
Got to admit it is exciting
Not since Randall even with McNabb has a player been as exciting

In case anybody was looking
Kolb had a QB rating of 130 yesterday

eagles have a lot of improving to do before elite, sb contending team, starting with atrocious play at linebacker, casey mathews, what does reid have to see to see what we saw in first preseason game, jackson could have carried him on his back and still scored if he didn’t get hurt, vick is exciting, but if he didn;t scramble and run, different game, running qb against this average team is a problem, this ttype of play on offense doesn’t cut it against playoff teams, andy reid is our noose around the neck, he flat out stinks as a game day coach, clock/timeout management, just waiting to blow a timeout and/or throw that beanbag, jjust unreal how he never changes, never gets better, sorry but this better get better, and it is a JOKE that your two first round picks from last two years are not even dressed for this game

A good win for the Eagles to start the Season, but some issues to work on..
#1) Stopping the Run and the play of the LB’s
what happens is Rams #1 RB S ackson plays the whole game and gets his usual 20-25 carriers.. A little different outcome I am sure..
#2) How about if the Rams WR’s don’t drop as many passes as they did…
#3) Eagles have to cutdown on their Penalties for the better teams will make them pay when they extend drives like they did yesterday..(gave Rams 4 1st Downs beacuse of penalties)

That O-Line played pretty poorly except for a couple of well executed sweep type plays. I tend to attribute at least half of the running yards gained to a complete breakdown of blocking across the line leaving wide open gaps/running lanes. If teams decide to mush rush the Eagles it’s going to be a HUGE problem not to mention 3-4 defenses. With Herremans needing the same help Dunlap has at RT and understanding that Justice will probably displace him when he gets off the PUP list anyway it makes more sense to get the left side fixed now and just except that Dunlap will need an extra blocker at times.

, this was not a “handy, solid win” (what euhpemism is handy anyway), birds were just the better team, but huge holes exist on this team, without vick running, they would have lost, against better teams, vick will not be able to run, and don’t you think it would have and will make a difference when your first round picks from the last two years can finally make an impact, rams stink ,bradford stinks, one of many white stiffs playing qb in nfl, this was not a memorable win, although the oline and dline played well, birds need to improve dramatically to be a super bowl contender, starting at removing the midget at middle lb

schiller
schiller
September 12, 2011 12:38 pm

jake – I disagree – I think that was a solid win. 18 point differential and a clear lack of a fighting chance of a comeback for the opponent to me is a solid win. I don’t agree with this “consider the opponent of a given game, and then evaluate the Eagles based off of ‘what if the opponent were a better team'” business. The Eagles WERE NOT playing any team other than the rams yesterday. Their task wasn’t to play good enough to beat the packers or the patriots or the steelers or whoever you want to say. The goal isn’t to dominate all aspects of every play. The goal is to beat the team you’re playing. That’s IT.

I agree it wasn’t a memorable game or win but it’s ridiculous for you to be thinking about teams other than the eagles and rams and other ‘what ifs’ – stick with reality man. Or not – that’s just my take.

Forget about the ‘ifs’. they’re useless.
