Do Eagles Have The Right Linebackers For The “Wide Nine”?

I know everybody is celebrating yesterday’s win and I agree that it is good to get off to a fast start, but the run defense must get much better and they have less than a week to do it. The “Wide Nine” is great against the pass and we’ve seen how it has helped the Eagles defensive ends be better pass rushers, but it’s not the same versus the run.

When the defensive ends move outside in the “Wide Nine”, it puts more responsibility on the linebackers because they’re forced to cover more ground. The ends lineup outside then they fly upfield, which widens the cutback hole.

On that touchdown run by Steven Jackson, he knew that cutback hole was going to be there. He took a step or two to his right, then he came back to his left and the whole was big enough to drive a truck through.

The only way you can play the “Wide Nine” all the time against teams that can run the ball is if you have an outstanding linebacking corps and right now the Eagles don’t have one.

A wrong step to the right or left will doom a linebacker who is playing off the ball in one of the three bubbles in the “Wide Nine”. A linebacker doesn’t have the room for error to take a false step or the big offensive linemen will have the angle on them. You need guys with great quickness, speed, or power. An average linebacker will get swallowed up because he’ll let that 320-pound monster get his hands on him.

In the game on Sunday, Sam linebacker Jamar Chaney, who is considered a big linebacker tallied 6 tackles. He’s got the quickness and ability to read blocking schemes, but it will be a challenge for him to play linebacker in the “Wide Nine”. I think he has the quickness but I don’t know if he has the power to shed those big guards and tackles.

Will linebacker Moise Fokou registered 5 tackles and middle linebacker Casey Matthews came down with 4 ball carriers. I’ll guarantee you that there’s no way either of these guys are going to make many tackles near the line of scrimmage in the “Wide Nine” against a team that can run the football, effectively. They don’t have the size, quickness or power to beat all those blocks and make tackles.

I saw them make a few good plays where they took on a block, then got rid of it, before getting in on the tackle.
You must have linebackers who do this over and over. Again, their first job is to read the blocking scheme. Next take on the big ugly offensive lineman, then get rid of him in split seconds, now come off and make tackles.

Of course the defensive tackles have to do a great job or the linebackers have an impossible job. We will probably see the defensive tackles being more disciplined versus the run, but I think we’re going to see a change in what they do with the safeties.

I think the Birds are going to be forced to get their safeties involved in stopping the running game. I could see them even having one of the speedy linebackers like Brian Rolle or Keenan Clayton, play one of the safety positions, but have him playing up by the line of scrimmage.

That would also put more pressure on the cornerbacks to play man-to-man. Cornerbacks Asante Samuel, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Nmandi Asomugha are all capable of playing man-to-man nearly all game long.

A smart coach puts more pressure on his best players, so it makes sense to put more pressure on the cornerbacks to give the defensive front help in stopping the run. An extra tackler will up there by the line of scrimmage and in position to make a play.

We’ll see if the Birds are willing to let their corners play man-to-man with no safety help over the top against the Falcons talented receivers, Roddy White and Julio Jones.

The answer is no they do not, at least at this time they don’t..
Steven Tullock would have fit this scheme and the MLB perfectly, but I guess we can’t have anything.. Rocky McIntosh would have been a nice fit too at OLB and then slide Chaney at MLB..

let the fs roam the field and put the ss in the box, problem solved
when we play nickel d we’ll be better, but i’d stack a 4-4 in the box and rely on our corners in base/run d formations

The Answer to the question?

HELL NAW!!!!

They have 2…the middle guy must go.

zRolle is 20 pounds lighter but will do bettewr because he’ll actually be in a position to make a tackle, or shoot a gap.

I said my peace about Matthews since day one of not signing stew, and all the know nothings jumped on me so I’ll just wait till people like schiller muster up the stones to formulate an opinion and then I’ll just tell him to shut up and criticize everything he says because thats all he can do.

The goal is to win the game. They won. If they win next week, and you are still unhappy with Mathews so be it. But if that pattern continues, and the Eagles either make a change, or Mathews improves, all that will remain is wins in the standing and the digital remnants of your bitching.

Either way I’m fine.

If they start losing, that’s different. But that hasn’t happened at this point.

schiller, run just wants actual opinion and not just garbage criticism from you. I understand you intentions and that you fight against the negativity and stuff. I get it and it’s cool with me. But the best way to fight the negativity is to actually provide some good, factual points from a positive perspective rather than just telling everyone how they don’t know what’s going to happen in the future. We all know we don’t know what’s going to happen, but the fun part is talking about it. If we all knew what would happen then there would little fun as a sports fan. That’s what sports fan do and it’s quite odd that you spend a lot of time trying to get people or at least criticizes them for doing what sports fans have been doing for eternity. Just give us opinions and facts and logic and not arrogant criticism.

“If we all knew what would happen then there would little fun as a sports fan”. – totally agree

scorp – if you look, I do give lots of opinions. I understand that sports fans love to make predictions. I do. And I don’t really take issue with that. It’s when they assume doom and gloom and expect everyone else to accept it as fact that bothers me. It’s more the negativity. Paul is the only guy I get on for just flat out predictions and we all know he’s a unique character…

I disagree with you about run though – I think he has a personal gripe against me because I call out his baseless hate. I think YOU “just wants actual opinion and not just garbage criticism from you.”, and you’ve done a great job of respectfully making that clear on a consistent basis. If you look at my other posts (especially in the past week or so) you’ll notice that I do offer opinions – especially when there’s acutal football going on.

After those 2 runs no more TD’s scored…Rams had 154 yds total 90 on 2 runs…3.4 yds avg run after those plays..

I’m glad the Eagles won and there were many positives, running game, sacks, O-line improving as game went on. I watched Matthews on every play and at times he would take a step toward the backfield and the back to the secondary. To me he is too slow and too small to be an impact MLB. Something has got to be done to improve the core of LB’s. Being stubborn will not cut it.

The LB Corps doesn’t appear that it’s going to change anytime soon, I am with Birdo, let’s support who we have and hopefully they will improve as they get more experience just like the OL and Safety positions too.. Lots of new faces, young players that have only been playing together for what 6 weeks now .. Use this opening month to het the kinks worked out and players and coaches on the same page, then start gelling and dominating..

Anyone know about status of LB AJordan and DE D Tapps injuries.. anything serious for either player..

birdo – yeah, I’m with you. I don’t like Mathews, but it’s really not worth worrying about now – he’s not costing us games and he may improve. Or they may put in Rolle/and/or slide Cheney back in the middle. The Eagles have shown that they’ll make changes to who’s playing where, and sometimes even out of the blue. schiller, he probably does has something personal. So you’re probably right there. But again, you only don’t mind people’s predictions if they are positive. If they are negative you take issue? If that’s how they really feel, then that’s how they feel. Now some people can be a bit over the top but feelings are what they are. Neither right or wrong or disputable, just how a person feels. Now, the best thing to do would be to tell those users why they shouldn’t be worried with real info and not that they are idiots. Some people really have bad feelings about things and there’s nothing wrong with that. Just like there’s nothing wrong with the person that always have a good feeling no matter what happens. But dismissing the comments has stupid or whatever without actually giving good reasoning on why they shouldn’t feel that way is even more stupid. It’s much better to say “I don’t get the negative comments because I think the o-line will improve as they work together longer” and so on and so forth than to say “here goes negadelphia…. no one here knows the future…..”. The latter is the reason why people don’t come at guys like Jon Hart as hard as they do you even though both of you are homers.

Gotta Luv It, so you point out Nnamdi getting blocked by a TE? A TE is supposed to block a CB. And honestly it should not have gotten to the point where you needed the CB to make a tackle. The LB got pushed all out of the play and that’s the issue, not a CB getting sealed off which happens on the majority of running playing between the tackles.

schiller
schiller
September 12, 2011 4:23 pm

scorp – I hear you. And to clarify as you asked, it’s not that I only am ok with positive predictions. It’s that I see ‘predictions’ like when a few days leading up to a game, people say what they think will or might happen, are different form ‘catastrophizing’ – which is more like when someone says ‘Reid will never win a superbowl’ or ‘vick will go down because the OL sucks and always will’ ….etc.. those are just examples, but I think there’s a difference between making predictions, and thinking that your (negative) knowledge of the team is absolute and that you know what will happen with the team long term. It’s the overall all ‘the team sucks because reid sucks and they/he will never succeed’ stuff and other negativity that is overexaggerated/illogical that gets under my skin. Many of the guys I take issue with think that I’m the exception to the masses knowing that they’re right – it’s that arrogance that bothers me as well. Do you not agree that those that I label ‘haters/negadelphs’ and so on – think that their view is the norm and ‘right’?

I always appreciate your way of discussing this topic with me scorp – you do it respectfully and with a sense of perspective.

Taylor Mays would have helped out here pretty considerably and all it would have cost the Eagles was a 7th round pick. Just as importantly the Eagles should have re-signed Stewart Bradley to play the SAM position. Rolle is too small to lend much in the way of run support. I almost wonder whether they should start Rolle at SS and sub in another down lineman for a LB on running downs I think they kept 9 or 10 D-Linemen (?) Trying to clog things up at the line makes more sense than trying to correct the problem at the LB level where there isn’t sufficient talent/depth at this point. You just need a D-Lineman that can effectively drop into coverage if necessary. /Kinda makes you wish Victor Abiamiri was actually a real player doesn’t it?/

Also, I believe it may have been Paul that made the erroneous claim that an organization can not cut injured players…Harris the previous right tackle was cut pretty immediately after having back surgery.

To correct you, The Eagles reached a “Medical Settlement” with R Harris and then released him after a financial agreement was settled..Check it out

To Gloomy,
Too early for me to pick this Weekend’s game.. The Eagles should go down and blow the Falcons right out the dome.. VIck will be sky high. and the Eagles have spanked the Falcons like the last 2-3 times they have played.. The Pressure is squarely on Atlanta for if they start 0-2 twith both losses to 2 NFC Divisional foes before they even start their AFC South Divisional Games, they may have a tough tim making the playoffs, so this game is also a must win for the Falcons even this early in the Season.. I think the Eagles will win this in a high-scoring game but will have a better feel come later in the week..

We need to find a 260lb middle line back to work in IF Matthews needs the support. Watkins was given that support and its good planning to have one as a backup, the other backers are great, and will learn and we’ll have really fast one’s. The one thing you see, is that they LB’s are really fast, raw? Yes, but they are fast and enthusiastic. What remains to be seen is IF they can learn to shed bolckers, in this wide 9 they will be getting attacked by 300lb lineman and TE’s, the key is leverage, if our LB’s can learn to use it they’ll be effective. A big MLB would be a great insurance policy. Bradley has shown why we let him leave, its really sad, great guy, but just injury prone. Way too early to give up on Matthews.

It’s completely acceptable to you that opposing Qbs see a big warm apple pie in the middle of the Eagles defensive zone? All I can say is that you have low standards.

I think the Eagles can improve these areas as the season goes on, but I don’t know that they are going to be a great run stopping defense at any point this season. It annoys me to think about the possibility that Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw could have a field day against this line up.
