Is LeSean McCoy the Best RB in the NFC?

Call me crazy, but LeSean McCoy’s spectacular performance in Week One against the Rams leads me to believe that this is the year he makes a name for himself with a trip to the Pro Bowl.

I know it’s just one game, but even last year, McCoy was a terrific playmaker when given the chance to work with the ball in an offense that tends to be more pass heavy than run heavy.

His 122 yards on 15 attempts (7.5 YPC) was amazing, and his two touchdowns (one running, one receiving) were very important in Philly’s opening win.

The NFC has a few talented runners: Adrian Peterson, Michael Turner, DeAngelo Williams, and Steven Jackson. Yet, only one of those guys (Turner) hit the 100-yard mark on Sunday.

McCoy can make plays out of nothing. There were a few instances in the opening game that he was stopped in his tracks before pulling a Barry Sanders-esque cutback to the opposite side to pick up positive yards when the play was all but dead.

His ability to create plays over the middle and off of swing passes from Michael Vick also makes him one of the best weapons in the league, and his shifty running and shockingly strong physique for his size makes him, in my mind, the top running back in the NFC.

Peterson is a fantastic player, but he has bouts with the “Tiki Barber” disease in his career. Turner is a great player, as well, but with a disappointing loss in week one, I’m not so sure what to make of this Atlanta team just yet. And with Jackson being injured in the opening game, questions around his injury vulnerability are popping back up.

Last year, McCoy was 5th in the NFC with 1,080 yards, but was first among RB’s with 200 or more attempts in yards per carry (5.2). He also ranked among the best in the league with just one fumble (Ahmad Bradshaw had 7).

So Philly fans, where do you think McCoy will rank in 2011, and do you believe he is the best RB in the NFC?

His 122 yards on 15 attempts (7.5 YPC) was amazing, considering his first 7 carries he only had 10 yds. I’m glad they used play action, because that opened up the run game, which Andy finally utilized. Keep doing it, damn it & you could possibly have the best RB in the league.

He is a straight up stud. He reminds me of Ricky Watters with a little more flair (if thats possible). Must be the Harrisburg water. He is better than Westbrook ever was as a runner and Im a big Westbrook fan. He can do it all run, catch, block, speed and he has a swagger. They hit a home run with him.

Hard headed Reid ought to run McCoy and Brown more

Most NFL defenses are geared to stop the pass

It is time to get ahead of the curve and RUN THE DAMN BALL

McCoy has become one the NFL’s Top All-Around RB’s no doubt
Wonder what kind of Stats he would have if he got the rock 20-22 times every week… To get him with a mid to late 2nd Round Draft pick was a gem and you have to say an excellent job by the Scouting Dept to find a RB whose skills set fits the Eagles system like a glove.. Eagles need to lock him up with a long-term deal too..

I’d rather lock up McCoy long term before locking up D-Jacc.

paulman – yep – but if you ask the haters, Reid and the FO should never get credit for a good pick – only blame for bad ones…

Something else to think about. We have a kid names Lewis, who ran in the same system as McCoy (pitt) and has the same running style. Although Lewis is a bit smaller in size, he is quick and hides behind the linemen very well. EVERY tv announcer always say that the Eagles run great screens. Honestly, I haven’t seen a great screen play from the Eagles since Westbrook left. Time to use Lewis in those screens. I mean thats why we have those small/quick OLmen right?

McCoy is fast becoming a monster since the D has to prepare for DJax, Maclin and Celek (even though Vick never tries to get him the ball). Hopefully they will have to deal with Steve Smith too.

This is exactly how AR likes to run the ball though. Build a lead through the air and then close them out with the run.

pcrow – exactly. I expect that (and with all the RBs to be honest) as the season develops. I think the first task is/was to get the OL keeping 7 safe, but that will come in time. And (i’m a pitt alumn so huge Shady/Dlew fan) I characterize Dion Lewis as a Maurice Jones-Drew type of back. That’s who he reminds me of.

I really like McCoy, he does it all. Before we get irrationally exuberant, lets remember that 95 of these yards came in the 4th quarter and that the first half for the run was very disappointing. because the O-line is a work in progress.

I remember the leadup to the 2009 draft everybody wanted the Eagles to draft Moreno. Mccoy ended up the 4th RB taken after Moreno, Wells, and Brown and he has definitely looked the best of the draft class. Shonn Greene was also taken after Moccoy.

Moreno has been a bust so far and probably has the next 4-6 Weeks to prove his value to the Broncos new Coachign Staff ot he will be a goner…
