Andy Reid: We’ve Got To Be More Aggressive & Learn How To Finish

In his day after news conference, Eagles head coach Andy Reid said he was to blame for not being more aggressive late in the game against the Atlanta Falcons. He said he should have been more aggressive when Vick went down with the concussion and Mike Kafka came into the game. Reid said he backed off rather than continuing to attack the Falcons.

“I”ve never been conservative as long as I’ve been here”, Reid said to the media today. “I’ve kicked myself in the tail for the number of times since I’ve been here that I was”.

Reid praised the play of Kafka and said he’s a good football player with a good future ahead of him. I would have to agree. Kafka did a great job last night with his decision-making and with his accuracy on his throws. Reid pointed out that Kafka made a great throw to Jeremy Maclin on the deep corner route late in the game.

The Big Fella admitted to sending a bad message to his team by being so conservative when Kafka came into the game. You could see that he pulled his foot off of the gas which was a sign that he didn’t think the youngster could handle everything, but he changed on that mentality on the last drive.

I have to give Andy Reid credit for admitting that mistake. Say what you want, but it’s much easier to point fingers at the players than to take responsibility for not believing in all of your players. This is one of the reasons that Reid has been so successful. He’s honest with his players and he’s not going to have them take the blame for mistakes which he has made.

After hearing Reid tell the public that he didn’t believe in him enough, do you think Mike Kafka is going to show up to play on Sunday.

This could be Kafka’s Kolb-A.J. Feeley moment come at last. Everybody should be pulling for the kid. He goes out and drops 400 yds and 3 TDs we’ll land a first rd. pick and a LB in free agency!! Laugh but you know its true.

I think reid sent another bad message admitting his lack of confidence in Kafka. What did Herm Edwards say ” You play to win the game! ” Now if Kafka has to start next week i hope andy instills faith in him during practice! Man, the vibe changes when Vick is not going to play! Its not going to feel the same but we must pull it out!

No brainer, Kafka has to start. How long has Vince Young been shelved? I know Tra Thomas said that he’d go with Young, but considering Young’s lack of experience with the system, the fact that he has been inactive for a couple weeks, and Kaftka’s performance –I say go with Kaftka. Is anyone else super concerned that Vick has a concussion? Season ending injury notwithstanding, a concussion might be the last injury you’d want to see Vick with. This guy takes a beating each game and while it’s not generally accepted as a fact, there does seem to be a correlation between experiencing a concussion and becoming more susceptible to future concussions.

Kafka looked good all pre-season and looked great last night – no worries. The big knock is he doesn’t have the long ball – his long throw to MacLin looked just fine to me. Smart guy, solid player. We are fine if Vick can’t go with either Young or Kafka. We will still hang 30+ points on the Giants – need to D to tighten up

Lets showcase Kafka against the Giants and trade him in the offseason for a second round pick.

Yeah Andy went prevent offense once Kafka got in there. I also gotta give him credit for admitting his mistake in going conservative. Vick most likely won’t go because of the concussion rules so I think you have to go with Young against the Giants. Not because he’s such a good QB but because with all his deficiencies and work reportedly bad work ethic, he knows how to win games. And honestly, we just need someone to win games until Vick is ready and don’t have time to experiment with Kafka to show everyone how good Andy and Marty is with QBs. So hopefully Vince is healthy and ready to go. If he has his legs, he can get us an ugly W.

Reid is taking the blame instead of the team, the defense was 0/5 red zone and they allowed too many points, that simple. Offense, if Maclin catches that ball that hit him in the hands we win the game. Khafka is a stud, great decisions, start him. Lots of positives from the game, just a few little things that went wrong, and yes, the LB’s are an issue and I’m confident the Defensive minds will figure that out. The team looks like Buddy Ryan animal instinct and for that, we should like the Castillio selection, the position coaches need to improve the LB’s and Safeties. Lots to like here, relax everyone.

If you didn’t know any better listening to Reid you would think he is a first year pro coach, the canned phrase “I have to do a better job”, who can listen to and tolerate this any longer, you can debate all the isues of the team, the defense, oline, it doesn’t matter until Reid is gone, i aint getting fired up or upset about anything, I have already mailed in the season as playoff loss, here that schiller, a playoff loss, so why get all riled up, “for who, for what?”

Then Jake – please feel free not to post the rest of the year and let those of us who chose to continue to follow the team and have aspirations for a Super Bowl team to continue unimpeded by those that throw in the towel after two weeks (1/8 of the way through the year) – much appreciated.

Didn’t Green Bay Start out at 3-3 with two of the loses being to the Redskins and the Dolphins, barely getting by the Lions – then they actually lost to the Lions later in the year – they didn’t even win the division – bet those fans are glad they didn’t give up – probably why they were voted NFL’s #1 fans (NFL.COM)

I wonder if the Steelers faithful have there panties bunched in a wad after getting destroyed by Baltimore the first week and if they spend the entire year going – we can’t beat NEw England – we can’t beat New England

Jake – sorry – I re-read my post and it is harsh – I apologize.

Just trying to make the point that it is a LONG season – we can 16-0 and still lose our first playoff game – or 9-7 squeek into the playoffs as a wildcard on the tie breaker and play in the super bowl – we won’t know squat till December. Let the team grow and develop – I saw great improvement between weeks one and two and this team has a decent schedule to finish 11-5 and win the division – worry about the rest later

navy, u dont have to apologize for anything, u have your way of looking at this franchise i have mine, i am philly born and bred, i choose to invest my passion in other endeavors until reid is gone, i might be wrong and i will fess up, take my beating, but probably not, and i look forward to phillies postseason run, if they don,t win it wont be because of their manager or other soap opera issues always surrounding the eagles, so you will be hearing less from this dog

Good list Paulman. I would do it like this:

TOP TEN NFC POWER RANKINGS by BIRDO BEAMEN:

1. Lions
2. Packers
3. Redskins
4. Cowboys
5. Saints
6. Falcons
7. Eagles
8. Bears
9. Cards
10. Bucs

Not bad.. the Lions have had an impressive start (over TB Bucs and the KC Chiefs who are just decimated now with RB Charles, TE Moeaki and Safety E Berry all on IR for the Season)
The TB Bucs lost to the Lions by 1 score, why have them rated at #10 and why the Cowboys at #4 abover the Saints & Bears.. ..
Bears thump Falcons who beat the Eagles, Bears need to be above both teams but to each his own… I’ll keep an eye on your weekly rankings..

Saints have played Packers & Bears their 1st 2 Games
Bears played Falcons and Saints
Saints played Packers and Bears
Falcons played Bears and Eagles
TB Bucs played Lions and Vikings
Cowboys played Jets & 49ers (both on the Road)
Eagles played Rams & Falcons (both on the Road)

These were all tougher than the other NFC Teams opening 2 Opponents which is why I have Saints,Bears, & Falcons all ranked higher than the Cowboys,Eagles,TB Bucs & Cards and then I have TB Bucs ranked higher over the Falcons and Eagles since TB Bucs won a Road Game while Falcons lost on the road bad and Eagles have split so far..

I will not watch or listen to anything that @$$clown coach of ours, says. He is nothing more than a condescending, predictable, repetitive, idiot, that will never change. He needs to be fired! We will never win a SB, until he is gone!

Yeah Reid. Those lo-o-o-ong developing end- arounds and reverses (Which fool NO ONE btw) ought to do the trick. Once the other team stops laughing at your gadget plays, you might gain a few yards… for once.
@ jimmy mac This is what really gets to me. The Eagles spend time and money developing a decent QB made for the system they like to operate and who runs it to near perfection and BAM! Trade him. Why, why, why? I’d like to see them give Vick another week to recover and play Kafka this week. I’m anxious to see what Kafka can do with the ones.

I suspect Kafka will surprise everyone. It’s not always necessary to have a scrambling quarterback in the Eagles backfield. The Eagles have been spoiled by years of McNabb (Whenever he DID run). Kafka is an excellent quarterback who will scramble when necessary but also moves around the pocket to take advantage of the protection available as it’s breaking down and is decisive and accurate. He’ll do fine.

I’m not worried about the Giants pass rush. Kafka proved Sunday night he could get rid of the ball BEFORE the rush gets there. Nothing frustrates a defense more than a QB who beats the blitz with correct reads , is decisive, and makes quick and accurate completions. Unfortunately ,when Kafka gets REALLY good, Reid’ll trade him to another team for high draft picks and a few washed up players. And it’ll be deja vu all over again. It’s always “Groundhog Day” with Reid.

I heard Coach AR and GM Roseman are talking to the Cardinals about sending to QB Kafka to them for LB Stewart Bradley… (not confirmed of course, just throwing it out there)

@ eddphillysportsfan. Coaches are responsible for putting their team in the best possible position to win and that includes selection and hiring of assistant coaches, selection or assisting in the selection and development of players. Head Coaches, working in concert with their coordinators that THEY select, decide what offenses and defenses a team will use and a GOOD coach will devise schemes in a way to get the most out of the talent of their players. Good coaches are usually charismatic , emotional and can motivate their players and “extract every ounce of desire and ability from them.

A GREAT coach, a la Bill Belichick, can make a difference. Good coaches (and I hope Reid does this) deal with their players on a one on one basis, work with them in film sessions as well as the practice field and is flexible, can adjust, is NOT afraid to take suggestions, can accept AND act on constructive criticism, and is open to compromise.(I doubt if he’ll ever respond to GC’s , as well as other fans, suggestion’s of a more balanced attack or sitting Matthews).I hope he listens and responds to PLAYERS suggestions.

Coaching is synonymous with TEACHING everything from position techniques to things as mundane as securing the ball in a crowd which ,apparently, they don’t place much emphasis on. Reid is NOT a GREAT coach he is an above average coach which, I guess, makes him good but his abstinence prevents him from advancing to the superb category of greatness in anything other than his waistline.

As long as he sticks to that trait, he will have gone as far as he’s mentally capable of and that translates to NO SUPER BOWL.
