Kyle DeVan’s Poor Play Forced The Eagles To Start Danny Watkins

If you’re wondering why the Eagles decided to make rookie Danny Watkins the starting right guard, it was because they had no choice. Kyle DeVan had one of the worse games I’ve ever seen a guard have in the 49ers game.

He was turning loose the defensive tackle or linebacker who lined up over him for no reason at all. I have no idea what was on DeVan’s mind during that game, but it was about as bad as I’ve seen a guard play.

I’ve rarely seen a guard make the types of mistakes that DeVan was making. He was deciding to not block the defensive tackle who was lining up directly in front of him. When he tried to pull on a block, he was tripping over his own feet or causing one of the other linemen to trip over his own feet.

A number of times he decided to help right tackle Todd Herremans block the defensive end despite the fact that a linebacker was blitzing through the guard gap. It made no sense to help Herremans and turn the linebacker loose. He did the same thing a few times was unable to pick up a blitzer because the guy gave him a head and shoulder fake, then beat him inside or outside.

He is a bad athlete. You can see why this guy was released by the Indianapolis Colts. The Eagles had to get him off the field.

I expect Watkins to struggle because he’s got slow feet and bad body control. Hopefully he won’t be making assignment mistakes like DeVan. The rookie must not try to kill the pass rusher, but he must be under control

Theres no doubt that when Devan could not make the Starting OL for the below Average COlts OL, that his playing days were limited, The Eagles were able to buy an extra month of practice and technique training for Watkins.. Now it’s up to him to step up and show everyone why he was a 1st Round Draft Selection..
I am pulling for him and hope he gets off to a good start and the BIlls Defense LIne is not a bad Team to stat off to get his feet wet but he will have to get up to speed in a hurry… The OL/LB and Soone to be Safety carosel continues… This Eagle team has little to no continuity and now with the injuries starting to accumulate, it will most likely be a long and lost Season..

Maybe if by some miracle they decide to run the ball Watkins can help with the short yardage push

OOOOH, big surprise, a stiff picked up off the scrap heap, only lasted 4 games. Anybody still think the O-line is doing OK!? Watkins, back in there to put out the fire & King “ain’t Duncrap”, is back! WOOHOO! Anybody else, getting pumped & confident!? This team is shot! Reid & his cronies need to be fired ASAP!

Lets be real G – Waktins might have ‘slow feet’ right now, but it’s really just because it’s been hard for him learning the offensive line scheme at this level..
The man was picked in the first round and by every analyst out there – he was the best OG coming out of the draft..

My only point is, the man has HUGE upside and it only makes sense to finally get him on the field to see how he can produce by the end of this season.
