Reid On Wide Nine: “Players, they have to learn it, coaches have to learn it”

Never have I heard a NFL head coach admit that not only are his players learning how to do their jobs during the season, but come foreword and say publicly that his coaches are also learning how to do their jobs.

If a coach is learning his job, then how can he teach the players what to do. It doesn’t take a long time for NFL players to figure out that their coach isn’t sure what he’s doing.

Eagles head coach Andy Reid admitted that both his players and his coaches are still learning to do their jobs with more than a quarter of season already completed.

“You obviously saw it work the second half very effectively”, Reid told the media yesterday concerning the “Wide Nine” defensive alignment. “We’ve just got to continue to work with it. Listen, anything new you’ve got to work with and work out the wrinkles and get it right. Players, they have to learn it, coaches have to learn it, particularly the new coaches. So it’s a joint effort there.”

The Eagles defense was hit by “The Perfect Storm” this off season of coaching changes, missed OTA’s and mini-camps and bad decision-making.

First of all they abandoned their standard defensive front by hiring former Tennessee defensive line coach Jim Washburn. The veteran defensive line coach is outstanding but all he believes in is the “Wide Nine” and all he knows how to coach is the defensive line part of it. This decision committed the Eagles to playing the “Wide Nine” regardless of what defensive coordinator they decided to hire.

Later on during the offseason, Reid hired Juan Castillo as the new defensive coordinator. This meant that Castillo was not only taking over the defense, he was taken over a “Wide Nine” defense. Castillo wasn’t familiar with being a defensive coordinator much less having knowledge of the “Wide Nine”. This was a huge mistake on the part of Reid and the team’s front office.

I’ve seen a quizzical look on the face of Eagles defensive players during games this season and it means they don’t understand exactly what they’re doing. You can’t play aggressively if you’re not sure about what exactly you’re supposed to be doing.

Of course the fact that they’ve done a terrible job of tackling has exacerbated every problem they’ve had defensively. It seems the team doesn’t have the ability to recover after giving up a big play.

Reid’s strength has always been in planning, but that hasn’t been the case with this year’s defense. They have a defensive coordinator who is learning the “Wide Nine” defense as he’s teaching it.

When something goes wrong and the opposition breaks a long run, Castillo can’t be perfectly sure what adjustment to make, if he’s still in the process of learning the defense.

That’s not supposed to be the way you plan and organize a defense. The defensive coordinator is supposed to have a thorough knowledge of the defense. He’s supposed to emminate a confidence when he’s addressing his players. It is not a good idea to put a coach in charge of a defense, which he hasn’t mastered.

Watch the safety blitz off the left side

Teams have done this religiously since the Giants made the blueprint yet Reid’s coaches still have not implemented an answer that get teams of that defense.

hell …just throw a screen to the side od the left blitz.

How about a shovel pass to shady running through the void the blitz leave wide open?

If I can see it what the hell is wrong with the coaches?

Get the ball out of Vick’s hands on the left blitz with misdirection.
But i’m tired of this crap…Let him continue his stupidity so we can finally get a new coach.

Another thing…bench Kelce garbage ass!!!!!!

How in the hell do he choose to double block a defensive back with a defensive tackle coming straingt up the middle.

Vick through an nterception on that play.

a damn defensive back does not need a double team…put Jamaal Jackson back there to settle the offensive line.

We need girth in the middle to push the pile but Reid won’t listen because it would be him admitting he’s wrong. And if he does it and it actually work he’ll have to respond to the question of why waste games with inferior talent when the answer was on the bench the whole time?

was it worth giving Matthews an opportunity as middle linebacker?

hell no!

No one came out and admitted that was a mistake that cost games.

Now we turn to the offensive line…the 27 year old fireman who really didn’t have a good game.

Look at the tape..i watched it 3 times…

HE’S A DAMN BUM!

Kelce should be moved to guard and Jamaal Jackson need to man the middle.

Let the newbies hit the damn bench.

RCP…they’re 1-4, not 1-2. People make silly statements on here, but that might take it…what exactly does “go on a surge” mean.

Birds have to go 9-2 to finish 10-6 and that won’t even guarantee the playoffs. They’d have to run their division gamesThey’d have to beat NE. Sea in that terribly scheduled Thursday game.

A much better strategy would be to get ourselves involved in the ‘Suck for Luck’ sweepstakes, though it’ll be hard to dislodge Indy. We’re going to need a new QB by 2013 the latest, so might as well start grooming another now.

I don’t care anymore, I have seen the face of insanity. So I am just going to hope my team does well. I am going to hope that the coaches get it right, the players get in a groove. No I am not a kool aide drinker I know what time it is, so I am pissed. Yet I still have my fan fortitude an refuse to bitch up like some damn Cowboy fan. I am an Eagle Fan and if I can’t man up when the S_it hits the fan, then I deserve everything I’m now getting.

If we loss i am going to twist an turn like the girl in the Excorcist, bark words of rage, curse Reid, come to this site for anger support….and then relaod for the next game. It is what it is, I said what I said. You guys have your gig, I have mine so there it is.

With this division I still have my hopes, and if the dang blang Seahawks could make the playoffs an beat the Saints, then I am just a plain old wuss if I give up now. You guys do what you will, as for me I am standing firm be it 12-4 or 1-15 whatever lets GET’EM and GET AT IT either way.

Sorry fellas my bad, I just refuse to roll over and die, we have had so many great regular seasons, that I can afford to take one for the damn team.

monlith you have the right brother to voice your fandom. But there’s other fans who are tired of this coaching getting in the way. I’m almost feeling we would have been better off with Rhodes and Gruden and grabbing Mcnabb.
or letting Rhodes go and have Gruden take over the great defensive talent with Thomas as defensive coordinator and the players who was accumulated from Modrak – Rhodes defensive picks.

Mcnabb was really the biggest decision Reid got right but his career have been busted under Reid’s philosophy.

Now that Rhodes players are gone and all the good position coaches have went on to jobs, we’re really seeing what Reid is about.

He was never a good game day coach and now his blunders can not be covered.

And when I seen him throw Mcdermott under the bus after depleting McDermott’s secondary only to replace him with Juan Castillo, I knew eventually things wouldcome around to bite him.

I’m not going to cheer for the sake of cheering…hell with that.

I’ll cheer for competence.

Not for incompetence.

Monolith – My hat’s off to you man! I’ve been a die-hard Eagles fan since the 70’s. I’ve taken everything, bad and good, this team has given. I just can’t abide by Reid anymore. I’m done investing any emotion in to this team until Reid is gone and it’s impossible for me to watch and not get sucked in so, I didn’t watch that last two games. Not setting my weekend schedule around watchin anymore either. No, it’s not the players fault and, they way some have been playing, it might not be a huge stretch that some players could be thinking something similar. Last year when Klob get hurt I went out a bought my whole family Eagles jerseys ffrom the site….Vick and Djax respectfully.

But, I will not spend another dime on this team until things change and while my little money may not put a dent in the multimillionaires who reside at the novacare complex…it’s the only justice I have against a coach who have betrayed and disrespected the Eagles fan base.

I’ll spend my money wisely not for a coach who is not willing to be candid with the fans.

He keep saying he understand how we feel…No he don’t!!!!

Because if he knew how we felt he would have hired the best damn candidate in the football business even if it meant threatening his authority.

Reid’s authority is in tact along with his multimillion dollar salary…But the fans are in the same boat we were before he was hired.

I’m finished…

I’ve become an expert talent guy by watching what my team lacks.

I know the lnebackers are important….you just can’t plug 5th and 6th rounders in as linebackers..That’s disrespect to the sport of football.

You never let the emotional pulse to the team like Dawkins walk even when he lose a few steps because he invaluable as a coach on the field. When the Players turned Reid off…they still had Dawk to bring them back to business.

You never send teh wrong message to your team by rewarding failure.

Rory Segrest was a pathetic coach over special teams and Reid put him over the secondary.

Juan Castillo Offensive line stunk since 2006 and he gets the defensive coordinators job.

WE’RE FREAKIN TIRED OF IT!!!!!!

I WILL NOT SPEND ONE RED CENT UNTIL REID AND HIS PHILOSOPHY IS FINISHED!!!

Back on topic,
If Coach AR and Castillo and staff want to learn the Wine-Nine at a quicker Pace, they can watch the Tape of the Lions Defense which also plays the Wide-Nine scheme.. I watched their LB’s ,Tulloch & Carpenter, make more plays in last nights game versus the Bears, then the entire Eagles LB Corps combined, have made all Season so far …
Their LB run to the ball, fill gaps, shed tacklers, and are strong at the point of attack.. None of the EAgles LB’s are strong up top to not only stand their ground, but to shed would be blockers and fill the gap.. Too often I see EAgles LB,s running backwards to shed blockers which only widens the holes and creates more space for the runners to go thru… These guys are bad but so is the Coaching and I beliver the Castillo is presonally spening more time with the LB’s that the rest of the unit and Castillo is failing every which way in my book.. He does not even make a competent LB Position Coach let alone a Defensive Coordinator.. Again Coach Ar like in the past 2 Season, has set up the Defense and D/Coordinator to fail which is in excusable and really cements to me that Coach AR really has no idea about
anything about the Defensive side of the ball which is kind of scray thinking he’s been the HC for what 12-13 Yearts… and watched the great JJ for 10 of the seasons… It’s unbelievable when you sit and think about how clueless is his..

Good News– Eagles win 24-23 on a 46 yard FG with time running out by Rookie Kicker and Special Teams player of the Week m C Henery..

Bad News — Eagles HC AR turns in the incorrect Active Roster for the Game and actually had 54 Players suit up instead on 53 Players, thereby making the win over the Redskins illegal and forced the outcome to be counted as a Forfeit win to the Redskins…Eagle Fans at the Fed-Ex Field abecome so pissed and livid that the surround the Eagles buses as they attempt to leave the Stadium tipping over the Coaches and Staff Bus, which ends up sliding down an embankment and into the Potomac River… Coach AR & Castillo are never heard from again…

I just watched the game again on NFL replay. You guys might be happy, as I found something else to be angry about (besides Vick’s 3 Ints in 4 drives)

It was 4 plays in particular that came after the Avant Fumble….all were very “sucessful” plays, for huge yards, but they tell us everything we need to know about the team….all 3 could/should have been disasters. Remember these came after the Avant fumble.

McCoy got ball next drive..had a big run, but was holding the ball way out there. He actually lost control of it as he was tackled, but gathered it up awkwardly against his chest on the ground. I was shaking my head…”didn’t they learn anything??” The corner of the ball should be in that elbow, against your chest! Irresponsible.

Then Vick’s long (50+yrds) run down to the 2. Great play right? Except you see Vick running down the right sideline with the ball in his left hand. Not tucked or anything…just flailing away in the left hand. On the right sideline. Every player has been taught since pop warner that you tuck ball into right arm along right sideline. Esp with defenders approaching…not Vick…here it is Bills…right here. Irresponsible.

Then Desean. 4th Q. Takes pass from Vick and running to right sideline. Where is ball? Flailing away in left hand. Not tucked. He actually jumped up into a defender with ball being held by left hand. I have no idea how he didn’t fumble. Totally irresponsible.

Then Vick again, in the 4th. Rolls way left and then does the unthinkable…from the left sideline throws back to the middle where Desean catches ball. A QB has been told all his life to NEVER do that. Yet he fires away…to “make a play” Irresponsible.

And a bigger problem, all 4 plays were “successful” and so will reinforce the abandonment of funamental football.

Again, these were all after the Avant fumble. After they been getting crushed all year by turnovers.

There coaches have told them not to do this. They do it. WHat does that say about them? They are selfish. Irresponsible. I don’t think the Birds can win with guys like this.

I am more and more convinced that we have a completely immature bunch of “look at me” kids who are playing for themselves, their stats. I think they take their lead from their hero Vick, who has always been sloppy with the ball. All trying to “make a play”. Not playing with any thoughts on ball security.

These 4 plays made me sick. You can’t blame the coaches for the attitude these “young guns” have (though GM for drafting and signing selfish players like these).

You might disagree with my calling them selfish…you might say, shut up Vinnie they were all great plays…they kept us in the game….but they were terrible, glaring examples of why this team isn’t winning.

These kids are too big for their britches and I’m convinced it comes from their “leader”

paulman – Pretty sure Reid never worked the defensive side of the ball and had JJ to handle everything on that side. We also know that he was never even a coordinator, was hired as a HC and has spent as much time as possible playing OC in addition to HC. So, yeah, it’s no shock that he might not know crap about the defense or maybe about the same amount as Castillo. I think that if you keep those things in mind, it’s not much of a stretch for Reid to think he could just slide Castillo from OLine coach to Defensive Coordinator with a defensive scheme Castillo has only seen the few times he may’ve played against it as an OLine coach. Just my thoughts….

If Redskins get up early on the Eagles, they will not stop attempting to score TD’s and will really run up the score.. I thoguht the BIlls slowed down their Offense once up 28-7 and basically just ran the ball to sit on their lead allowing the Eagles to make a come back.. Their Defense also played some soft zones once they got up big too..

There are at least 4 Superbowl winning coaches, not coaching…

Jimmy Johnson
Bill Belick
Jon Gruden
Bill Cowher

There is probably at least 3 or 4 offensive or defensive coordinators in the NFL good enough to be good NFL Head Coaches.

In college the coach at Boise State wins against SEC and Big 12 opponents when given time to prepare. And just like Belichek and Dundgy were not successful in their first team, I think the Alabama coach would win in the NFL IF GIVEN THE RIGHT SITUATION.

So there are quality coaches that could replace Reid..

Reid had his chance, and he blew it.

Fire him right now, and let the replacement use the rest of this season to prepare for next seaqson.

the Eagles would have to go 9-2 to at least have a shot at the play-offs. That is not going to happen with Bozo the clown at defensive coordinator.

They made no adjustments after thes Steelers exposed them as bums.

The first step to solving a problem is admitting you have one.Since they can’t seem to do that ….let them go, and bring in somebody who is living in the real world.

I don’t think it’s the new defense, I think it’s the coaches. These guys had months with nothing to do, but learn the defense. They should have been able to coach it by now. Get rid of the whole staff. Again, Mike Singletary DC, G Cobb and Troy Vincent as asst. coaches. Keep Washburn.
The reason for cleaning out the Defensive coaches is exactly what you write: the players don’t fill the holes at the line of scrimmage, they don’t get off of blocks and they arm tackle. It’s why we’re 1-4.
I’m always going to root for the Eagles. That will never change.

Every team reflects their Head Coach
It’s obvious that Coach AR has little self discipline about his own physical well-being and does not have a history of holding people (Players and Coaches) accountable..He’s too loyal to a fault and has always been known as a players coach but now when he needs to put the hammer down, it’s not authenic or legitimate.. He doesn’t know Defenses worth a dime and his Team has a losing Record at Home over the last 2 Season (4-7 Overall)

Why does everyone bring up the same Coaching re-treads up..
Parcells,Cowher, Dungy, Jimmy Johnson, Billick have moved on and are no longer interested in Coaching, they are making a good living, having fun working only 1-2 days a week covering football, spending quality times with their famililes that they missed when they were Head Coaches.. Head Coaching and especially in the NFL, is an all-consuming occupation and you have to be 100 % certain and “all-In” in to be effective and succesful at it… (It’s like running for the Presidient of the United States, you can’t be half-in and reminisce about the days of old.. see Joe Gibbs as an example..)
Now I can see Jon Gruden, Jeff Fisher, Jim Mora Jr, Mike SIngletary all wanting to return since they are still relatively young and have the energy level to still have the passion to be HC and the competitive fire to win a Championship, but why do so many posters keep bringing up these old re-treads names …It’s ridiculous and shows how out of touch many posters really are with the Current NFL in 2011 and beyond…
The Eagles would likely hire someone from the Coordinator Level that has new ideas, new philosophies than the AR/MM Philosophy has been
Young Coordinators from the Packers (Winston Moss,Kevin Greene)
from the Jets (is it Pettite), Giants (Perry Jewell) Patriots, etc,etc..
I cound even see a some energetic coaches from the College Ranks who have a winning resume have success in interviewing well with the Eagles Front Office (Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, Lou Holtz JR, Les MIles all come to mind…) Lots of possibilties but going backwards with an re-tread name or coach who is retired is not going to happen, that I can tell you…

Nice post Pman – care to comment on the difference in the performance of the 49ers under Singletary as to how they are doing under Harbugh – the $(ers didn’t react well to Singletary and his style but seem to be thriving under HArbaugh – Harbaugh’s background (HC at USD and Stanford) is

one of the reason I like P Johnson from GTech – and I know your thoughts on him transitionaing to pros – but like Harbuagh -the move from a solid 1AA program to Div I program – building winning teams and traditions – look at BRady Houcke – Head coach at Michigan – he has made solid improvement in his teams as he moved up – more focused on D side – someone else threw out the idea of Boise States coach…… I have dropped the Ryan DC from Dalls off my list – and for the record – I have shifted my position that if the Eagles do not qualify for the Playoffs this year – I think it will be time to find a new head coach – I am just not impressed with the caliber of the other teams in our division – so if we can’t win the NFC East – no excuse

see that Dboy – I can still be a full supporting eagle fan – I didn’t have to curse, I was able to express football opinions AND say that based upon performance there should be a new coach – that my friend is how a ‘fan’ carries himself……

Thnx Navy,
What I have liked about HArbaugh is that he exudes “confidence” in his and his COaching staff abilities as well as his players abilities… SIngletary is more of a leader by “fear” and the 49ers with a bunch of young talent on that team just did not respond well to that style of Coaching and let’s be honest, SIngletary was a great player and one of the most competitive players to ever put on a uniform.. but he had limited Choaching experience and any level and as a Head Coach was porbably in over his head on how to manage an entire team, staff, local media,fans,etc,etc..

Paul Johnson is no doubt an excellent teacher and great all-around Coach who could be succesful in the NFL.. I am not so sure that in a big-market like Phily where the expectations are always high with crazy, rabid fans that Philly would be a good starting spot for him… A Mid-West City/Team like the
Indy Colts, Minnesota VIkings, St Lous Rams would all be good fits for him

I have heard good things about Hokie up at Michigan but just haven’t seen much of the Wolverines this season to make any jusdglemen… (I am in ACC, SEC Country), the Coach from Boise State & TCU have been leading programs that have consistently solid teams with solid kids.. I like Al Golden from Miami (ad formerly of Temple) though he is not ready now, but give him
3-5 Years and he may be ready for the next step..
Rob Ryan at the COwboys is not Head Coach material in my book..
He’s more of a loose cannon than REx is at NY.. No owner is likely to put up with that…
Here’s another name… Former VIking Coach Mike Tice (a former TE) who is tough minded fella that has been Coaching with Bears as an assistant the last couple of Seasons, Dom Capers from the Packers probably deserves another chance as Head Coach..
Jeff Fisher would be a Coach I would very much like to see in Philly..
Remember when he had gooq QB plany (with Steve McNAir was in hs prime)
they went to SUperbowl and AFC Championships, so he knows how to run an offense and defense.. Fisher made him marks as a Special Teams Coach for the Eagles and understands all faces of a Football Orgainization and obviosuly knows how to work with the local Media and the fan base which, believe it or not, I find important for the next HC Coach..
An area that I don’t know if Fisher is real strong in is the Draft/Player Personnel area which the Titans GM handle most of these duties, while I am sure that Fisher had input, was just not an area he concentrated on since the GM and Titans Scouting Dept handles those duties..

Penn State would never hire an Urban Meyer type…
The will stay in house and hire that red-headed O/Coordinator who is terrible and will continue to be a .500 Program of little relevance outside a 200 mile radius of State College,Pa

Jon Gruden should be ready to get back into coaching by now. Reid needs to let Howard Mudd go back to the retirement home and hire Tre Thomas to be the O-Line coach…PROBLEM SOLVED, BY NEXT WEEK.

They also need to demote Fokou for Akeem Jordan and Jaret for DRC/Colt Anderson. I liked the fact that they finally got DRC involved last week and he start breaking up some of those ridiculous passes up the middle that kept killing the team. With Colt Anderson being physical and probably a step and a half faster that Jaret the defense could be tightened up a little more. I don’t care what anyone says the whole city would be a bit more confident the Eagles could turn it around if the starting safeties were Nate Allen and Taylor Mays.
