Changes Are Needed As Eagles Fall To A Bad Cardinals Team

Hang up the jerseys, put away the face paint and take down the inspirational signs, the Eagles season has come to an end.

After another fourth quarter collapse resulting in a 21-17 loss to the Cardinals, a team that once promised greatness has given fans across the Delaware Valley misery instead. Sunday’s performance was the most disgraceful display of football this city has seen since Bobby Wallace coached at Temple.

All eyes must now turn to head coach Andy Reid. After thirteen years, six division championships, nine playoff appearances, one conference title and zero Super Bowl victories, the fat lady must now sing Reid’s swan song.

If one thing was clear in the postgame locker room, it was that this group of fifty-three players is only that and nothing more. They are not a team and do not know how to play as one.

Asante Samuel said:

“Everybody has to groove together and figure things out together and have each other’s back. We have a lot of new players and new coaches. We just need to figure everything out at the end of the day.”

The end of the day has now come nine times in 2011, and only three of those days have ended in happiness. So who is responsible for the lack of chemistry? It is Reid and his coaching staff.

Time and time again Andy Reid has reiterated the importance of putting the players in the right places to make plays. Yet, this never seems to happen. Sunday’s game plan was another perfect example of how to prepare an NFL team to lose.

Without DeSean Jackson, the Eagles’ second leading receiver and best deep threat, the team was never able to expose the weaknesses of the Cardinals’ 29th ranked pass defense. Arizona often stacked the box and pulled their safeties in tight, daring Reid to continue to call for the pass, to which he unsurprisingly obliged. At one point in the first quarter, the Eagles had two straight three and outs. Over those two drives, Reid and staff called seven consecutive pass plays.

One drive later, the team finally called for a running play that gained thirteen yards. In response to the success on the ground, Reid reverted to the passing game, which continued to render little success.  It was not until Steve Smith caught a six-yard pass with four minutes left in the first half that an Eagles’ wide receiver recorded a positive gain.

When the Birds went into the locker room at halftime, they had seventy-three passing yards on eighteen attempts and seventy-three rushing yards on eleven attempts. It does not take a mathematician to determine which had been more affective.

Coming out of halftime, Reid, to nobody’s surprise, continued to throw the ball. In the fourth quarter, when the Eagles had a seven-point lead, Reid called nine straight pass plays. When asked after the game about those plays, he said, “We thought we could do what we needed to do to add points on the board.” When DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin are both on the field, nine consecutive passing plays makes little sense. Without either of them in the game, it is unfathomable.

Michael Vick finished with fewer than 130 passing yards and a quarterback rating of 32.5.  Vick was downright terrible, and when he made some decent throws, his receivers frequently dropped the ball.

Yet, no matter how much Vick and the wide receivers continued to struggle, Reid seemed to avoid giving the ball to LeSean McCoy. When asked why, Reid simply stated, “We have to do a better job all the way around.” Last time I checked, Reid has the final say over what plays get called.

But going back to Reid’s comment about an all around better job, Michael Vick needs to step-up. His fourth red zone interception of the season is simply unacceptable. As the quarterback he is the leader and I am seriously questioning his leadership qualities.

After the game he tried to maintain that there is still hope for the season:

“Every game is not the same. We still have opportunities. Lord willing, maybe we can end up 10-6. Who knows? Nobody believes it but us. I think that’s the most important thing. We just have to find ways to get it done. We can’t perform like we performed today. If so, it will be a rough set of games.”

“Rough set of games” may not fully characterize the negative fan feedback that will surround the Eagles if they continue this downwards trend. Michael Vick is allowed to remain optimistic, but I am going to be realistic. Andy Reid is the best coach in Eagles history, but he has lost the respect of his team and the support of the city.

Professional sports do not take into account past success unless it involves winning on the biggest stages. Reid is yet to prove that he can do that. There is nothing that this city craves more than an Eagles’ parade down Broad Street. I have come to accept that Andy Reid will not be the man that is leading that parade.

“Playoffs’, Playoffs’, are you kidding me, Playoffs.”..
If I were Jeff Lurie, I would sell this team to Los Angeles Investors for a $1 Billion and ride off into the Sunset..

With both of your starting receivers out of the game, how do you NOT give the ball to McCoy for 13 and a half minutes, especially after he just ran for 29 yards. This, against a team who ranks near the bottom of the league against the run.

THIS is how you set your QB and your entire team up for failure.

Common sense totally eludes Reid.

With the game on the line, none of our premier CBs is covering Larry Fitzgerald, it’s Jarrod.

THIS is how you set your QB and your team up for failure.

Didinger said it best, “Reid has become bad for business.” The stadium was dead. People are not spending money. Reid is history!

Paul

Why would Lurie sell? Philadelphia sports is a gold mine!

He just needs a coach.

Let me go on record right now. I “believe” this team can win with Vick, but we need a coach.

6 runs in the 2nd half, 2 in the 4th quarter, despite the success McCoy’s had this season and during the game, with a yard average.

How is this guy a head coach? The most casual of fans can make common sense decisions. How difficult can it be to understand that if something is working, we should probably use it?

This team is not even worth typing or talking about… I’m just going to move to the Giants game. For crying out loud we have the same record as the Redskins… Only 3 teams in the entire NFC have worse records than us. Talented rosters… prove it!!! I watch big physical linebackers make play after play on other teams, safeties blasting people, where is that on this roster. For the life of me, why are our corners playing zone!!! Avant, Smith, Cooper…c’mon man. 6’9″ guard are you serious, who’s idea was that. ANDY THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE, BUT YOU”VE GOT TO GO… And Jeffrey please don’t bring an old recycled coach to Philly. I want someone new, with fresh ideas, oh with just a tad of fire as well…

Reid is a QB killer, and people wonder why there was McNabb the great, then the McNabb we know now. And those same people wonder why we had Vick the great, and the Vick we have now.

Your coach is a QB Killer, been saying that for a long time, too, but some guys more intelligent that I blame the player. Okay, whatever works for you.

By, from what I see, it all comes down to this horrid coach.

Again, how do so may pro bowl players all go bad simultaneously.

I know, Paul, they were never that good to begin with. I heard you yesterday.

IT’S NOT THE COACH.

I’m with you. Don’t give me Cowher or any other recycled coach. If the Niners, Packers, Steelers and others can find new head coaches, so can we.

Crystal Ball Andy
The Fat Man

Wrote an article for this site last summer that the Eagles would never a superbowl with this bum of a coach.

Blogged that you could give him the starters from the NFC probowl team and he would still find a way to lose.

He is a moron who surrounded himself with some good coaches who have left, and had some good players from the Ray Rhodes era.

Completely on his own now, and a complete bum..

Wasted 13 years spinning this team in the same direction.

Undersized defense and bonehead play calling.

Schiller and Navy, now maybe you understand why I never liked this bum.

No respect for the home fans. Hard headed and stupid.

Hope your enjoying YOUR BOY this season.

I am going to GOLD PLATE the paper that has his firing in it.

Sorry guys – Lurie ain’t gonna fire Andy – not now – not this year. In his eyes, Andy has brought the team from the outhouse when he bought the team to the penthouse (in most years) the last 10 years and he has made Lurie MILLIONS of dollars. Besides the other owners respect Andy, and their opinion means more to him than the less than supportive Philly press and fans who have earned the reputation of being against every thing, everybody. I think the best we can hope for going into next year is a real Defensive co-ordinator.

It’s like trying to plug up a Comcast HD box, to your Grandmother’s big ass floor model TV!!! It’ll never work! ANDY REID BETTER GO!!! We the fans have been more than devoted, patient and loyal. We get into arguments over this foolishness! Week after week, and the front office hears and knows the heart beat of this City, the fans and the fans all OVER the world! And if they do not fired Reid and his bumm ass “D CO” then they are full of SHYT! And then to send D-Jax home for missing 2 meetings?? Stevie Wonder can see that D-Jax is not happy, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he missed meetings. But Arrogant Andy whenever his phat ass is on the hot-seat does this type of shyt to send a message! Well Andy, if u want to send a message FIRE JUAN, you Jerk! Sending Jax showed how no other reciever can open up the field like he can! T.O and Jax deserved more money, and once again…they blew it! Steve Smith shouldn’t have never came here to begin with!!! So u know what to HELL with the rest of this season and this Coaching staff.

He’s MICHAEL VICK!!!!!!! How could we be duped by a few great games to think he would ALL – WAYS be GREAT??? This game is about balance. If they would have ran the ball equal to or slightly greater than they threw it with McNabb here, we would have won 2 Super Bowls! AT LEAST!!! Same with Kolb and now Vick. This PASS to set up the RUN is STUPID! Time for a COMPLETE housecleaning before things really erode like Jackson AND McCoy signing somewhere else…

Dixie

Did you hear that crowd yesterday? Neither did I. Fans have become anemic and apathetic. The Phillies are stealing the merchandising dollars and Lurie is feeling it. That’s why he went all-in.

Reid has become bad for business, and Lurie is about money.

Trust me. “Reid’s outta here like last year.”

yeah but Vick is the best QB we’ve had since Cunningham. But most “EAGLES FANS” turn on you after you have “a” bad game. When the coaches call a balanced game then Vick shines,…..but if u cause Vick or any QB to throw more than he should, he’s destined to make mistakes. Ex: (Palmer,Cutler,Romo, even Brady against the Giants) So it’s NOT VICK it’s coaching. We have a talented team who has been inconsistant because our coaches are inconsistant. We ran the ball twice in the 4th quarter. Between hiring Juan and dumb ass V Young making the dream team statement, we are the laughing stock of the league! And rightfully so!

And Reid still won’t get fired. They will use this bullshit lockout excuse. Yes the lockout that every other team dealt with. The lockout that the Niners came back from with a rookie head coach and washed up QB and now sit at 8-1. Same lockout. Not that the D coordinator is out of his depth and has blown six fourth quarter leads. It was the lockout. Not that the QB has totally regressed because Andy and Marty fail to provide proper run support. It was the lockout. And the O line has played well by the way. Jason Peters may be AP this year. Mudd has done his job. Vick gets hit because he holds the ball. But its the lockout. This team bet their defensive future on a seventh round draft pick that played three solid games. But its the lockout. We committed tons of cash to an average QB that had seven good games when we had all year to assess. But its the lockout. Get ready for the lockout excuse because Reid will be back next year. And then when we jump out to a 5-2 start somehow. Oh they extended him for three more years. What was that definition of insanity again Mr. Banner?? I think you may be going insane!

Andy’s time has passed….he ruled the NFC East when it was pityful and the worst division in the NFL….as teams improved, the Eagles remained competitive….now that teams have gotten smarter and used the draft to rebuild, the Eagles continued to have terrible drafts and free agent signings…..
