For a team that has not just fallen, but has disastrously crashed short of expectations, it may have been said that the Eagles have no right to turn their noses up at any opponent, fair enough. On the other hand, for a team that has the talent of contenders, the record of league minnows, and that should have that “brink of destruction” type of urgency, a game against the Arizona Cardinals is the type that could have served as the perfect win and tonic at a time that the Eagles needed it the most.
Sure, the Eagles have their issues, sure a loss to the Bears eradicated the ecstasy that was produced by the thrashing of Dallas a week before, sure, fans were growing a distrust of the coaching staff, but they are the Arizona Cardinals.
There’s a reason that some could have looked down on this particular opponent, because despite their 21-17 win at the Linc on Sunday, they are who we thought they were. They are a team whose biggest threat comes undoubtedly in the form of wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald.
Now forget the fact that the Eagles have DRC on their roster, forget that Asante Samuels exists, you could even forget the fact that Fitzgerald had some Skeleton guy as his quarterback on Sunday. All that is important is that Philadelphia has Nnamdi Asomugha, and that in itself should have been enough, but the Eagles still let them off the hook.
Now the word “should” is not used here to imply that Asomugha did a bad job covering Larry Fitzgerald, not at all. It is instead used to highlight the fact that the man rarely even got a crack Arizona’s No. 1, which prompts the obvious question: Why spend big money on a lock down corner if you do not plan to use him to the best of his abilities?
For years Nnamdi Asomugha made opposing no. 1 receivers look like rookies. He would, on the regular, render one side of the field off limits and force quarterbacks to treat their favorite receivers as their least favorite, all while playing for some pretty bad Oakland teams. The routine was simple; Nnamdi covers player, player gets neutralized. It’s a routine that many expected to continue this year, yet now that he’s in Philly, he is continuously and nonsensically ordered to roam around the field, made to play as if the name “Woodson” is on the back of his jersey and not Asomugha.
Rarely should analysis be simplified to one aspect of a game. Likewise, the key to winning a game rarely boils down to one question, but let’s just put the events of this game into context. The Eagles by all means were not playing well. They were not scoring points, and had 10 of their 17 off of turnovers. On the other side of the ball, the Cardinals were in the game, mainly because of Fitzgerald who was well on his way to becoming the No.1 fantasy receiver on the day. Now just imagine, what would the game have been like, if the most obvious strategy would have been taken, and if the Eagles had put their best corner on the Cardinals’ best receiver?
For those of you picturing such a scenario in your head, you won’t have to think hard. Last year Asomugha covered Larry Fitzgerald as his Raiders played Arizona, and Fitzgerald was limited to 2 catches for 26 yards, yet somehow we were still left to watch that same receiver surpass that amount of yardage on one play when covered by Jaiquawn Jarrett on a 37-yard gain that set up the eventual game winning touchdown.
All sense, all reason, all history, and even the events of the game (Asante Samuel was burned several times) would leave you to believe that had Nnamdi Asomugha been covering Fitzgerald Sunday, this type of play would never have happened, never mind the 7 catches and 146 yards that the Cards’ receiver ended up amassing.
If faced with the question of why Nnamdi was not used in a lock down role, Andy Reid will likely tell you that it was just “not in their game plan,” as he was indicated to reports since the loss, but that is just not good enough. The Eagles have lost once again, using a game plan that had obvious holes and deficiencies when they needed a win the most. The fact that the Eagles coaching staff stubbornly and unbelievably missed this opportunity to simplify their game plan on Sunday will only add more questions to crew that seems more and more to have little answers, proving once again that Philly’s opponents are not their greatest enemies this season, but they themselves are.
Explaination: Utter stupidity and total incompentence.
Coaches should put their players in the best possible position for them to be successful and for the team to be successful. Except the Eagles coaches.
Gentleman let me offer a different perspective! I’m an eternal optomist, my glass is half full… the way i see it my sundays just became free for the forseeable future! I dont have to worry about being in front of a tv, I can go to dinner or lunch with my wife, play golf if weather permits, hell i can go to a play or a movie. This season is working out great! in short….I AM DONE!
Times yours…..
Somebody Please Explain Why Asomugha Wasn’t On Fitzgerald?
Because the defensive co-ordinator is a bad coach and doesn’t understand that you play to the strengths of your players…Castillo has some kinda ‘system’ that he is using, but it is a bad system, not unlike what Reid does with the offense where he ‘gets too cute’ and doesn’t work to his players strengths…Reid is ‘pass, pass, pass’, and Castillo is ‘pass, pass, pass’ meaning ‘let your opponent pass over the goal line while your players wave their hands in the air’…I haven’t seen one hard, ass busting tackle from the Eagles defense all year…This is the NFL, not the Arena League.
I could not figure this out until I picked up my son from daycare and saw two kids trying to fit a sqaure peg into a round hole. That’s Andy and Juan.
You have three of the best cover guys in the league and you refuse to use them that way. There is no exucse for now having DRC or Asomugha covering Fitzgerald.
Nnamdi was not covering Fitzgerald because he held him to 2 catches for 26 yards last year, and Reid felt sorry Fitzgerald. Remember, he’s a player’s coach.
the answer is simple- because we do not have- nor have we had- a D cordinator for this team.
Another example of Reid’s weakness…. He is stubborn to a fault. He knows more than anyone else…. He continually takes guys and believes he can change their positions and style of play and make them better or as good as they were when he took them. Never works, but he continues to do it. Small and fast with “High Motors” has proven to be a losing strategy, but again, he persists. Linebackers…. Not important… wrong again, but he won’t bend. Time to let Andy be Andy somewhere else!
the answer to this D problem is simple (fire the coach), but if you are not going to do that, here is what you do.
1. NNamdi- line up on the oponets best WR every play. Even if its a zone, you play that spot.
2. Repeat.
3. Repeat
Don’t get me wrong, Castillo is in way over his head and totally unqualified to hang with an NFL offensive coordinator, but there is no way that the way the Eagles are using 24 is his idea. To me that reeks of Andy the ubergenius>
Reid and company have finally been exposed for their inabilities and poor decision making in all phases of the game. Many things were brought to the forefront by posters on this website long before this time but there were certain boneheads who challenged every post. I hope they now realize they were wrong.
@BigE and everyone else!
you were right about the play calling, decision making..Reid is at fault for a lot of things wrong with the team….Real Talk!
So do you want a cookie, now?
Someone please tell these cats they were right, so they can shut the hell up!
Andy Reid doesn’t want to just win. He has to win on his terms, and that often means creating an exotic game plan every week that may ignore all logic. It looked like Vick was able to rescue the flawed fame plans last year by himself with his ability to run and not turn the ball over. Well, Vick can’t score in the fourth quarter to hold a lead, let alone to lead a comeback. Vick was the ultimate “cover up” last year, but he seems to be playing closer to his true abilities now.
AR has made many great decisions over his time here. However his recent HORRIBLE decisions overshadow them…. and really it comes down to 2 HORRIBLE decisions. Hitching your wagon to #7 and making castillo the D.C — the other bad decisions are what happens when you have a leadership role. but the 3 decisions above are the ones that are inexcusable.
Vick is 3-7 in his last 10- thatt flash last year was a mirage…. its not winning football. AR should have known that.
As Greenfan put it (with spelling correction)
Explaination: Utter stupidity and total incompetence.
well…read my posts here for the last 2 seasons..this season is a blessing for me. We have to change the coaches now and if we don’t …I’m done with the Eagles until ‘REGIME CHANGE”
This is the first year I have not brought any football merchandise from the Eagles and refused to make a home game.
This is the only way I can show my discontent for the coaching staff along with the incompetent front office.
We need a real General Manager and coach for this team…PERIOD!
I’m against this team and will continue to be until things change.
The Eagles are back in the Joe Kuharick Era, setting records for losses at home and 4th quarter leads blown. Andy Reid may want a cookie or boxes of them
to sooth him in his time of grief. Realtalk777 we already knew we were right that is why Schiller is in hiding or on the Penn State sight defending Sandusky.
Hey everybody ,, since the eagles suck so fucking much i say we boycott the team .. and we all collectively now consider the ravens our home team .. theyre not that far from us .. they have a nice stadium great defense a good running back.. what do you guys think lmfao
Stubbornness, stupidity, cluelessness, idiocy, & having your unqualified, inexperienced, @$$clown, f^#@ing O-line coach, as your D-coordinator. That’s why!!!!!!
Joseph:
I do appreciate your point of view. Looks like same old stubbornness. No excuses. I have stated the same over the years. I understand and agree with alot of it. But…
I am going to watch every game the Eagles play for the rest of the year and root my heart out for them. I know Big Red is flawed – but I cannot help myself. I live and die with the Eagles. Everybody has criticism right now; so it’s time for me to show my true colors. My team is wounded, I’m here to stick up for them.
GO BIRDS!!!
