Young Leads Eagles On Long Game Winning Drive, As “D” Comes Through Late

The Eagles finally fought it out with all they had for four quarters and they came away with a 17-10 win over Giants.  New York, who is tied with the Dallas Cowboys at the top of the NFC East at 6-4.  The Eagles are two games back at 4-6.

The Birds had jumped out to a 10-0 lead  in the first half, but they gave up a field goal to New York at the end of the half.  In the second half, the Giants fought  back to tie things up at ten with Eli Manning connected with New York wide receiver Victor Cruz.

It looked like the Birds were going to blow yet, another game in the fourth quarter.  Manning had the Giants on the doorstep of tying up the game with the clock running out, but defensive end Jason Babin hit him from behind and caused him to fumble and Eagles defensive tackle Derek Landri recovered to give the Eagles the victory.

Tell me anybody who expected Vince Young to convert six third downs in a long winning drive to put the Eagles over the top.  Yes, Young threw three interceptions and looked out of it at times, but he made the plays when they needed to be made.  Again, he and the Eagles offense converted six third downs on the last drive with everything on the line.

When one of the reporters said something about how unbelievable the winning drive had been, Andy Reid pointed out that those winning drives had been executed against the Birds a number of times this season.

Young threw for 258 yards, while completing 23 out of 36 with three interceptions.  The former Texas star tallied the winning score when he threw a strike to wide receiver Riley Cooper on a slant route.  Ultimately it was one of the plays that gave the Eagles the victory.

Cooper took a while to come down with some of Young’s passes but he made the plays when he had to.  He was targeted 12 times and came down with five of them for 75 yards.

Earlier in the game, the former Tennessee Titans quarterback had hooked up with former New York Giants receiver Steve Smith for a 14-yard touchdown.  Smith talked about how sweet it was to get into the end zone against his former teammates.

“Oh man, it’s a great feeling”, Smith said afterward.  “It’s like a cherry on top of the win, to be able to make a play and contribute, and especially against my old team.”

The defensive line played very well as they dominated the Giant upfront and Manning unable to get any type of rhythm.  They pressured him and pounded him until making the final play that made the difference.

What is it about Cruz which allows him to own Nmandi Asomugha?  In the first game, Cruz made two touchdown catches with Asomugha contesting him for the football.  He beat Asomugha again last night.  For some reason the cornerback never turned to cover Cruz as he went by him into the endzone for a score.

Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson had an outstanding game despite a taunting call which cost the Eagles a 50-yard pass play.  Jackson caught six passes for 88 yards.  He ran back a punt to set the Birds up for a touchdown and also made a great play on the game-winning drive to keep the sticks moving on third down.

Reid said he gave him a talking to after the taunting penalty.

Eagles running LeSean McCoy was bottled up for most of the game until making a long 60-yard run down to the Giants two-yard line to end any chances New York had of getting the ball back.

G, does it really matter right now? This ugly win is just delaying the inevitable. A win is a win, but does anyone with half of a brain cell, really think they are going to run the table, & make the playoffs? In no way, shape, or form, will that happen.

And who said they should start Kafka over Young?

How I would be disappointed come 11pm Sunday night?

LOL.

Like I said 2 – 0 against the Giants and 30 -17 is all that matters.

Now 3 – 0 and 31 – 17

Vince Young – King of the ugly win (though Tebow is looking to take the title)

Just win baby win.

The defense nearly lost this one again in the 4th quarter, but no one’s perfect. Perhaps next time.

Young pulled Reid’s fat out of the fire, but given a few games, Reid will have set up Young to get killed. He’ll call 50 passes, ignore the short passing game and the run and the rest, as they say, will be history. It’s just a matter of time.

at what point is taunting not a 15 yd unsportsmanlike penalty , seems like a very stiff call to replay the whole down.

This game and the Cowboys game shows you how well the defense can play when properly motivated. It’s a shame it takes either being in front of a nationwide audience on Sunday night or being eliminated from the playoffs to get these guys to hustle and play to their maximum.

Of course I blame the lack of total commitment on “Bozo the Defensive Coordinator” and “Crystal Ball Andy”.

It would be sad to see the Eagles keep lowering their draft possition just to save Andy Reids oversized rear for a few more weeks.

Reid is history. Don’t give me that junk about his contract. He has Embarassed the Owner and the Front office and ever since Banner said he “doing the same thing is the definition of insanity” they have been firing coaches and dropping big name players at the end of every off season. The only one left to jettison if the over weight lover Andy Reid. (sorry heavy D)

Juan said that Andy Reid is putting in 22-23 hour days. If anyone should be putting in more hours it’s “Bozo the fake defensive coordinator” after 13 years as head coach in the NFL you would think Andy knew what he was doing.

Please run straight. That cut back play was scouted out and nailed every time. NFL players always talk about how big the Playbook is. Yet you only have 2 running plays? After the Giants stopped it for the 7th time you would think you change the play.22-23 hours???? Doing what??? Studying the Menu’s at Le Bec Fin??

Size matters? Watching replays this morning the one thing I noticed is how big VY is. How he stood in the pocket and was towering over the lineman and able to see down field. Also watching VY I never felt like he was in jeapordy of being hurt. When your as big as the men rushing you the fear of having to run kinda dissapears. Saying all that the protection was great. Honestly I could live with VY being our QB.

One thing is for sure. DJax doesnt need Maclin on the field to make plays. Maclin needs Jackson to make plays. DJax electricity is priceless. How in the world you can let this player go. Can it be the play calling that determines a players fate. Can it be the QB that is behind center? Maybe VY size can see him down field better? Seemed to me that Jackson was wide open throughout the night. Running crossing patterns, quick outs etc. Not many clearing out patterns last night. I cant imagine anyone in the NFL that can keep up with him on a play to play basis. If VY plays next week expect DJax to put up 150 yards.

Dag — shutup. It’s clear as day why DJax will not be here next year. His stupid taunting is not Eagles football and it’s not what we have been the last decade. It cost us.

Kudos to Vince Young, DJax and Riley Cooper for a great effort on offense…..but our DEFENSE won us the game. They played lights out aside from one Vic Cruz TD. (They should have called a holding call on Trent Cole which would have negated the long pass to Nicks).

We need a defensive effort like this EVERY week for the next six weeks.

Dag — you are the biggest week to week whore I’ve ever seen in my life. You’re what I like to call an NFL Hoe. An NFL Hoe is someone that goes by what they see week to week and think its going to be like that EVERY WEEK so they jump on the biggest d*ck for that week.

Shutup and learn football. VY did his job on that last drive but I was ready to put Kafka in by halftime.

@nev — the taunting penalty would have only been 15 yards……but since the Giants had a penalty on the play as well, they cancelled each other out and had to replay the down. If the Giants wouldn’t have had a penalty, we would have gotten the play minus 15 yards.

Why would you have wanted Kafka in at half time ? ..Were we losing ? While it wasn’t pretty it was a game..Funny thing is I remember when most Eagles Giants games were like this 10 – 7 or 17 – 10 games….They were ugly

Vince young, a bit rusty, but great in the clutch, the eagles may hitched their wagon to the wrong hoss, that drive is something we haven’t seen in a long time, maybe something to get excited about

Great game, the game ball goes to the Defense! 10 points, to an opponent, 3 and outs…This was the best defensively played game all season…!

Young was a beast on the last drive (which was the only good drive the Eagles had all game), but Avan’ts finger tip catch should not be overlooked! Jackson stepped up and played big! He showed exactly why he is arguably the most valuable weapon on the Eagles! Failure to move the ball in the first half, not for DJAX punt return, dont think we would of saw a TD in that first half! Cooper even played well.

The defense played well enough so that even had Kafka played the Eagles would have had a chance, and it is that plain and simple….Had the Giants scored more points, you’d be crying about Young’s INT”s…

yesterday’s game completely defines what football is – A team sport! Had this defense shown up early this season, do you think we’d be 4-6?

As we all as eagle flock know beat downs of she li and the Giants or homo and the cowgirls allows us to wear our pride on our green chests.A few observations when our offense stretches the field it pays dividends underneath. Our offensive and Defensive lines in two games showed that effort is a factor in the obvious cliche, games are won or lost in the trenches.Djax with attitude is whom we need sign,he is the guy who you detest if he’s not your guy…I’ll take passion over the alternative every Sunday. The inexplicable The birds played with attitude for two games this season and beat up and exposed a pathetic Cowgirls squad and last night put there cleats on the Giants necks.Pride, determination and attitude defined both wins,is it likely we can extricate ourselves ?Or sadly will we have to hear inexplicably I HAVE to do a better JOB? Please Birds hit andys mute button and I give thanks to that as does every Bird Fan within the flock..

Is this a case of too little too late? Who knows. All I know is that the Eagles destiny is in their own hands. They win out, they’ll make playoffs. Giants and Cowboys will beat each other down. Giants schedule is horrendous.

With that said, gameball goes to the DEFENSE as a hole. And props to Vince Young for not putting us in TOO deep of a hole.

If the Eagles play with this sense of urgency and passion on both sides of the ball, they will win their share of ball-games.. whether it’s enough for this season is probably doubtful, but if they can play their game and be committed to play as a Team then they will have a solid foundation on what to build on for 2012..
They dug themselves a deep hole, and now it’s time to fight and claw their way back in it and play every game as your playoffs…

Schill, there is no problem on my end. WTF are you talking about. Wow, it must feel good for you, in your dull, useless life, to get all chunked up for a meaningless loss, in a lost season. Good for you. God bless! Enjoy yourself. I’ll wait for next year to get pumped when Reid is gone. BTW, I watched the game.

Dcar – what I was talking about is the fact that the Eagles just had a great win and you seem to not enjoy it. Generally, a great win by a fan’s favorite football team is something they’re happy about. You seem to be down in the dumps, negative, and just grouchy.

“Wow, it must feel good to you, in your dull, useless life”….are you stalking me? Then how can you make a statement about my life? Guess you’re just talking out of your ass…

And I love this part – shows my point – “to get all chunked up for a meaningless loss, in a lost season”. And “BTW, I watched the game.”

First, I never said you didn’t watch the game, I said that it seems like you didn’t enjoy a good win.

Second, what’s “all chinked up”

Third (and this is revealing) “a meaningless loss… um..dcar… IT WAS A WIN. NOT A LOSS. Are you able to see through your cloud of negativity to calculate the implications of final scores anymore!!!?? SMH

And “lost season” – obviously I see where you’re going there. But if they don’t win the superbowl – obviously the most likely scenario – then I don’t say the whole year is lost. This will go down as Shady’s breakout season. This could be (looking back) the year when Nnamdi, Jenkins, Babin, Rolle and Chaney, the newly IMPROVED Oline etc.. all came to the Eagles and became a solid core for the success of the next few seasons. I don’t care who is coaching next year – from Reid to Gruden to my left nut – this team may have very well developed something significant this season – which you will call lost because of your closed mind.

Coach Ar and staff will all be back for 2012 as I have stated a 1000 times..
The Highest Paid Coaching Staff are all signed thru the 2012 Season (and AR is signed thru 2013).. Lurie & Banner will give AR every opportunity to right the ship
and these final 6 games will be important for the Team, their Psyche and for about a dozen to 15 players to find out if they fit in the EAgles future plans.. Let’s see how they finish this season and all they can do is take care of business.. they match up well vs the Patriots but they have to figure out who is going to cover their TE’s (Gronkowski & Hernandez).. I think that Asmo should take Gronkowski and take him out of the game, J Hanson match up wioth Welker and let Samuel take his side as usual.. Patriots will look to match up their TE’s versus the EAgles LB’s which is an advantage for the Pats..

I agree Birdo,
It is important the Vick play well down the stretch also and Vick will be heading into his and Eagles most important Off-season as far as I am concerned..
I believe that all the missed time between QB Vick and his Wr’s due to holdout, illness and whateve had a negative impact on their timing as a unit..
This Off-Season, If we see the WR (D-Jax/Maclin) and QB VIck all go home and do their own thing, than I don’t see a lot of improvement moving forward.., I am hoping Vick grabs the bull by the horns and get players to stay together and practice more often and stays as committed as he said he would..
As a matter of fact, this will be huge off-season for a lot of Eagles if they want to return to the upper echelon of the NFL, there is little doubt, that the talent and foundation for a very good team are in place, it’s the little things, the intangibles, maturity and the leadership that was missing for most of the early season.. Evewn if the Eagles fall short this season (whic is very likely) I want to see tyhat fire and passion come out and finish the Season strong and play some good ball coming down the stretch and maybe knock out a team or two … No one can change the outcome’s of the games from the begining of the Seaon, but hopefully what the Eagles can now do, is play good, solid passionate football and give us a real glimpse of how they can play in the future to build on..

paulman you have good football knowledge, would make a better gm than roseman ,which probably isn’t saying much, but just because you say something a thousand times doesn’t make it so, there is real, widespread unrest with Reid, if the eagles follow what appears to be their pattern of inconsistent play, expect a let down this weekend if Vick plays, than lurie will axe reid

Jake,
I will bet you a $100 that Coach AR is the Eagles HC for 2012..
There is no doubt in my mind .. Lurie is not in the business to fire an entire Staff because Fans are upset, and will allow him and his Staff to get it right for the 2012 .. Then next year if they lay an egg, then the Terminations will come, but not this off-season.. I also agree with Schiller, the Front Office doesn’t care what Fans think, The Games will continue to sell-out, game after game..
