Andy Reid: “he (Vick) hasn’t had an offseason with us (as a starter)”

It’s a fact that Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg have never had the opportunity to work with Michael Vick during the off season with number 7 as the starter.  It seems to be the best argument Reid has for the Eagles keeping him place as the team’s head coach.

Reid just finished his 13th season as head coach of the Eagles.  At some point the Birds are going to have to turn the page.  They didn’t make the playoffs this year and haven’t won a playoff game in the last three years under Reid.

There’s been a report by Charlie Casserly of CBS Sports that Reid will return for another year, but the Eagles front office hasn’t commented on it as of yet.

After the game yesterday, Reid started making that argument about needing time to work with Vick.

“It’s not an excuse but it’s a reality that he hasn’t had an offseason with us [as a starter],” Reid said. “And I’m looking forward to that as far as breaking everything down and being able to give him an opportunity to look at the games again and give him another look.”

The quarterback continued the same argument when he sat down in front of the same microphone 20-minutes later.

Said Vick: “There are a lot of things that I want to work on and I won’t elaborate on everything. But I’ve watched the film, I know what areas I need to correct, so it’s all about tightening everything up, fine tuning everything and winning games.”

Around the league, Reid is looked upon as being a genius when it comes to working with quarterbacks.

Eagles tight end Brent Celek, who shined down the stretch, expects Reid to be back and definitely wants Big Red back for another year.

“I think Andy’s going to be back. I think he should be back,” Celek said after the game. “The guy is an amazing coach.

“I’m not worried about that. I want him to be here. I think he needs to be here in order for us to win this thing. He’s got my full support.”

At this point, it’s fairly certain that Big Red will be back next year, so I wish him the best of luck. If I know anything about Reid, they will be better and I won’t be surprised if they rattle off 11-12 wins and go deep into the playoffs in 2012. I’m not sure what to do about Castillo. His defense definitely improved as the year went on, but I still don’t think they can hang with the Packers Saints and Patriots of the world.

Who really thinks Owner Jeff “Loyal” Lurie is going to fire him and buy him out of his last 2 Years as a very highly paid Contract after 1 bad Season.. You guys are silly… He and his Staff will all be back in 2012 to continue to build on the strong finish from this 2011 Season.. Stop the nonsense already ..

Hey Andy, Jim Haubaugh didnt have an offseason with Alex Smith, how did that turn out? Is he kidding me? Vick started the majority of games last season in his system so he had a grasp of what was going on, what Reid was really saying was, he cant coach on the fly, hey Andy, we already that ! Your clock management, timeouts, and halftime adjustments already proved that.

31 other teams want to win the Super Bowl too Pete every season..
Does every other team fire their Coaching Staff when they fail to win…
Too many of you fans and local media have become like Society in General and have become spoiled and expect instant gratification every season, well, it just doesn’t work that way.. Lurie has build a succsful Football Franchise with Stability and Loyalty and yes we are disappointed that they have not been able to bring home a Champioopnship yet, but I doubt very much that Lurie is going to change gears and start firing/hiring Coaches every other year due to a disappointing season one in a while… This is not Owner Lurie’s Nature or hwo he operates as a CEO.. . Could he fire Coach AR and the Staff, sure he could, Do you blow the Team up and get rid of malcontents and Hire A new Coach with a new Vision and Philosophy, sure he could and then have to replace 3/4 of the Roster to fit a new Coaches Philosophy..It just doesn’t make sense at this point and time when this current Team is still very young and talented at key Positions.. And even if Lurie did decide to change direction and get a new Vision and Philosophy with a new HC, what does he do with his $80 Million QB Vick who just cannot fit and play into every Coach’s schemes.. Too many of you make your decisions based on emotion on the moment instead of taking a step back and seeing what needs to be done ..

Hey Paulman, Wimping out on a real decesion?Ok, Jeffery will let Andy come back….Little Napoleanic JoeB shows his class by again claiming Birds are number one in the city in his most condescending manner, Mail-boy turned Valet, turned player selector boasts of his two lousey drafts and says he can’t wait to trade all the first, second and third round draft positions to pick up talent in the 5th, 6th, and 7th rounds to play linebacker and safety….and Andy stays and proclaims JC returning with his learning season complete…….the faithful cry, and the lapdog, koolade drinkers try to spin the 13th year of failure in a good way. Way to justify it Paulman.

@paulman – one bad season? This team has been in decline since Reid was given full power of authority on personnel decisions…. he is a good coach but terrible at player personnel…bring in a real GM and I am ok with Reid as head coach. Roseman is another puppet!

Thought this article was about the superstar?

He hasn’t had an offseason yet!!! I mean how could you possibly expect a competent knowledge and execution of the offense at this poing. Vick has only been on the team for 3 years. All he’ll need is one off-season, then he’ll be fine.

Next year he’ll have it down pat. I’m sure of it. Just one more year……

They will never bring in a new GM, Banner would never push out his protegre Howie Roseman.. And yes I do agree the Decline began when AR got the President Titles and oversaw the Plyer Personnel/Drafting Operations, the sad thing is that GM Roseman is worse… This teams needs a real GM but don’t see that happening with President Banner or Coach AR still around…
Maybe whenever Lurie sells the team and the next group will have areal hierarchy of Football people running the Football side of things but I will probably be dead by then…

I dont want him out but i want some power taken away. Please tell me we hire Spags… please tell me we are getting a GM. Best of in the NFC East Division (which finished Tied with the NFC West for fewest wins as a combined Division at 30)

Best QB – Manning then Romo (Vick was not in the same class this year)
Best RB – McCoy followed by the Cowboy tandem of Murray &Jones
Best OL – Eagles by far, followed by the Giants..
Best TE – Cowboys Whitten, followed by Eagles Celek
Best WR- Giants by far, followed by Cowboys.. (Eagles Underperformed)
Best FB – Giants Hynoski for they actually use him a little bit, followed by Cowboys T Fiametti .. (Eagles need serious Updgrading here)

Defense –
DL – Giants, then Eagles followed by COwboys
LB – Redskins, followed by Cowboys as both Eagles & Giants were bad
Secondary – Redksins were the most consistent but faded late but the Eagles,Giants and Cowboys had deep coverage issues and tackling issues all season long…

Special teams — Kicker Henery had a nice Season followed by Giants Tynes
Punter – Redksins Sav Rocca followed up by Giants Weatherspoon wghile the Eagles Henry improved as the Season went along

Return Game — Cowboys, Redskins followed by the Giants and the Eagles were flat out terrible in Kick-Off/Punt Returns

Not to change the Subject, Does anyone see Eagles Safety Jaquin Jarrett as an NFL Caliber player… I don’t .. He’s too small, slow and not a very good tackler which was the main reason he was drafted for we were told..He was brutal in yesterdays game where he took very bad angles on tackles, had his head down, bounced off a blockers, carriers, receiver running right thru him
I am not even sure he will be on a NFL Roster by 2013, even as a Back-up/Special teamer.. I hate to pick on the kid for he seems like a nice guy and of course a local Temple Product, but he is just plain physically overmatched, he may be able to put 10 Lbs of Muscle on but he can’t get any taller or faster, this was like the DL Teo Neisham Draft pick in the 3rd Round where just not a NFL Athlete and was selected a good 2-3 Earlier than projected… Draft Gurus miss on players on occasions, but they are also right about players too.. which is why the measurable are important adn especialyl a skill position like a DB,WR .. You have to get some separation, be able to leap, lunge, run, hit and all those things and it appears that Jarrett has a very long ways to go..

on the Positve, great game by LB K Clayon, I think he if he comes to camp motivated and a little bigger and stronger, he has a chance for more playing time, he appears to be the best Cover LB and may be able to do a better job on Good TE’s next Season than a Chaney,Matthews or Rolle can do..He also reads the outlet passes and screens well. and I also like him in Blitz Packages for he has a very explosive 1st couple of steps that I wished they took more advantage of using in getting to the QB… His knocok is that he’s not been consistent in SUmmer Caps, paractices and that sometimes he’s not seriouls enough about his profession, but I tell, he has a lot of talent if it can be channeled in the right way… I think Rolle,Clayton, Jordan and yes Matthews all improved as the Season went under Castillo .. I think Fokou peacked and is out and Chaney I thought kind of lost his agressiveness a little bit towards the end of the Season.. I am not sold that he’s the Starter MLB Next Season amd kind of disappointed me.. He misses a lot of tackles, where he has good postion, leverage and everything but doesn’t wrap up or gets his shoulders into the tackles..

Navy- it hurts when you pee? Yikes bro.

What stats bothers you navy? The win loss stat? The redzone stat? The turnover stat? The drops stat? The mistakle stat? The # of LB rotation stats? The blown 4th quater lead stats?

Bottom line dude is that this team HAS the players. This team had the WIDE OPEN shot to win this poor poor NFCE. This team banked on a red hot O ( that was not red hot last Dec) to make up for this crap of a Dcoach. And now… This team HAS to watch the real teams play in the playoffs. So…. Put your pompoms down for a second and realize this was a BLOWN season and we have a right and a reason to be pissed.

Stevo – I love stats man – love them – my two favorite grad school classes were data analysis (my project was on football point spreads!) and STatistics. Anyway – the key is to look at ALL the stats – not cherry pick a few – then figure out the coorelation between the stats – for example – franchise record in yardage – highest turnovers ever – 8-8 record – think there is a correlation – I do – the team with the 8th point total and 4rth highest yardage total – yet 8-8 – why is that – could it be too many turnovers? I would say bad red zone offense – but I would coorelate that with an extra high number of FGs by our kicker – kind of like Akers with his 40 something – no – we had lots of turnovers..

see an analyist wants to now how the eagles ‘blew’ (which is a stupid fucking term because where is it written what defines a ‘blown’ lead – I guess any time a team scores first they ‘blown the lead’ but thats semantics right –

how did the eagles ‘blow’ the lead – did the offense commit turnovers late in the fourth qtr – drop passes, fumble – could those leads be ‘coorelated’ to mistakes by the offense – how about to special teams – would we have ‘blown’ the lead to San Fran had we not missed two FGs hmm… you have to find the comminality and figure out was it the players (did you hear the rant by the Raiders Coach where he basically said at some point the players just have to get it done – the caoches can’t block, tackle, catch or run – thing of beauty)

see that is the difference between a blowhard person that really knows nothing other then how to whine ‘its a blown season’ – figure out why it was blown and how to correct it –
by the way, as I read most of the chucklheads on this site = don’t every year 31 teams have ‘blown seasons’

second question – what was blown about it – you mean you are not mature enough to enjoy a football season unless your team wins the super bowl – you can’t have fun getting together with friends – eating some good grub, enjoying a cold pint or two? MEt a dude from Long BEach CA that grew up in Reading, we sat together and talked eagles for 3 qtrs – Put down your negative nelly attitude and realize ITS A GAME – a sport – entertainment.. no assurances of victory and for 31 teams – the agony of defeat..

and again – you can like or hate stats – this ‘crap of a D coach’ ended up being #10 in points, #8 in total yards you are basically pulling shit out of your ass if you say ‘had we hired a ‘real’ D coordinator it would have been better – because the dude basically has a top 10 D – you have to get over yourself that things didn’t go well in the beginning of the year – and realize maybe, just maybe, it wasn’t all his fault – top that off with this guy ‘Spags’ had the #14 D his first regular season – thats right – Castillo had a statistically better first year then Spags in their first seasons – yet people are clamoring for Spags to come back..

I know the whole ‘meaningless’ thing – isn’t it funny we played several games with a back up QB – but god damn – people on here expect OUR back up QBs to be good – its just the other teams that suck ( the ole’ G Cobb double standard in high glory)

but anyway – keep those panties wadded up tight – look like it will be until Friday before they make any announcments – and here is my prediction – Eagles will be 16-90 and win the SB next year –

and just to keep up my typicall posts – WHAAAAAA my season was blown – WHAAAAAA

This Bowl Season has been some great games and continues to show everyone that the Game of Football is about Speed and big play making abilitiy.. Stevo – its a curse to be the smartest guy in the room – I handle it well –

Stevo – quick question – where did anyone ever right or say they were ‘happy’ why is it you idiots (that’s coming from me – the smart one) make assumptions – why is it if I am not wailing and whning and bitching and moaning and complaining – I am ‘happy’ – at what win level would ‘happy’ be permissable, or only at Super Bowl win would ‘Happy’ be permissable –

so from the smartest guy in the room – its OK to be happy no matter what the eagles record – cause – again – from the smartest guy in the room – what you think feel or anything else doesn’t matter –

and if you were half as smart as the smartest guy in the room – I have repeatedly stated – I am non-commital to whoever the eagles decide to keep or bring back – McNabb, Reid, Westbrook, Dawkins, Castillo, Spags – If at the end of the day they are on the Eagles – they have my 110% support – if they are not – thanks for the service and move on –

I get a kick out of you ‘hardass’ I ain’t happy people – like you matter… my point – from the smartest guy in the room – sit back – relax – enjoy the show – it may be entertaining

I think Washburn, who has a contract through 2013, most likely provided criticism to Reid and Castillo that was not welcome. He doesn’t look like a “yes-man” to me.

I agree Pman…would not be suprised to see Castillo back with the OLine. I think that would be a real mistake. I saw real improvement from the young linemen, and Peters was more like the Probowler from Buffalo we thought we had signed. Juan’s style is less aggressive and does not provide the protection the Mudd’s system does.

Now lets be clear and most of you know, I support Andy Reid and want him back next season. However, had the Eagles dropped the last 4 games of the season and been 4-12, then it would be obvious Reid should go. (keeping in mind many of the signings during the off season were done 5-6 years out) So had the team given up, blown the last four, then it could be taken as quitting on the coach, coach losing the locker room, coach unable to inspire his team, no leadership etc etc….Obviously this team never gave up on coach AR, no way will Lurie do opposite.

Navy- where have i ever cried or whined? where have you ever heard me say its unfair? From day 1, i have been balanced in my opinions of each year. You wont hear me crying about thee owner or the 2 money men. I feel we need some help drafting on the D side but i think they are a large reason we are able to work out the kind of deals we do. I dont bemoan Andy too much. He is what he is. Hes going to give you a solid gameplan for the O and should be able to win games. However- i will give him crap for clock man and putting too much pressure on the qb’s.
My overall problemwith this team is 2 things….. 1. Juan should havve never been hired. Its not crying…. its my opinion. Quote after quote from players talking about how he is “getting better” lead me to believe we should have never gone this route. I supported him…. like i dd kolb but its time to bring in a real DC. 2. The coaching in general was a sturuggle. They dont takle, they make far to many turnovers, lots of penalties and they look like they gave up (some players even while the play is still rolling).

bottom line is- its ok for me to have an opinion. I pay money to watch the games-therfore- i bought a right to complain.
