Notes From Phillies’ 7-0 Win Over Toronto

Cliff Lee and Carlos Ruiz made their Spring Training debuts on Tuesday, and the Phillies came up with a 7-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. The Phillies scored four runs off of Rick Vadenhurk of Toronto in the fourth inning, which proved to be more than enough for the team’s second win of the spring.

  • Cliff Lee pitched two scoreless innings, looking sharp in his first appearance of the preseason. He gave up two hits and a walk, and recorded one strikeout.
  • Lee had to pitch out of a jam in the second inning. With runners on second and third with just one out, the lefthander was able to strikeout Travis Snider and force J.P. Arenciba into a pop up to end the inning.
  • Kyle Kendrick followed Lee with two scoreless innings of his own. The versatile righthander allowed just one hit, and struck out two.
  • Shane Victorino recorded his first hit of the spring with a two-run single.
  • Juan Pierre went 1-4 at the plate, drew a walk, and scored two runs. The veteran is hitting .375 through the first four games of Spring Training.
  • John Mayberry and Ty Wigginton each drove in a run.
  • Hector Luna, playing at third base, made a fine defensive play to take extra bases away from Edwin Encarnacion, throwing him out from foul ground.
  • Freddy Galvis drove in a run for the third consecutive game with an RBI double in the ninth inning.
  • Jeremy Horst (the lefthanded reliever acquired in the Wilson Valdez trade), Mike Schwimmer, J.C. Ramirez (the third piece from the 2010 Cliff Lee trade), Raul Valdes, and Jake Diekman combined for five scoreless innings and five strikeouts, while allowing just four hits and one walk.

Keep hearing Galvis’ name. Nice to have depth at short for when Jimmy misses time this year.
