Recapping The Final Three Rounds Of The Eagles’ Draft

On the third and final day of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Eagles spent the majority of the day adding some depth to the offensive side of the ball.

With the 153rd pick in the NFL Draft, the Eagles chose to pick up some depth for their offensive line, drafting Purdue offensive tackle Dennis Kelly.

Kelly has a 6-8, 321 lb frame, and was a starter for three seasons. He’s a tall, lean, athletic offensive tackle, and was an attractive late round option for offensive line coach Howard Mudd. The fifth round pick isn’t a lock to make the roster, and could be a practice squad candidate, but it will be interesting to see what Mudd can do with this raw prospect.

In the sixth round, the Eagles first took wide receiver Marvin McNutt. McNutt is a physical receiver, and stands at 6-3, 216 lbs. He’s a good possession receiver, but there are questions about his consistency and effort. He’ll have an opportunity to push Chad Hall and Riley Cooper for a roster spot.

Six picks later, the Eagles grabbed another offensive lineman, Brandon Washington. Washington is a 6-3, 320 lb guard from the University of Miami. He’s very athletic for his size, and some believe he has the talent to eventually develop into a starter. He has the talent for Howard Mudd to work with.

With their final pick in the seventh round (the pick acquired from Atlanta in the Asante Samuel salary dump trade), the Eagles took running back Bryce Brown from Kansas State. Brown has good size for an NFL running back at 6-3, 220 lbs. He has speed, strength, and talent, but his draft stock was greatly impacted because of his lack of production in college. His greatest accomplishment was running for over 400 yards in his freshman year at Tennessee, but since then has failed to crack the starting lineup. He transferred to Kansas State last year, but left the team after learning he would not start. The Eagles need depth behind LeSean McCoy, and the chance will be there for the young running back to earn a roster spot.

Was not too impressed with these final 4 Picks,,Thought we would see a WR earlier and some updgrades at TE/RB who would actually have a shot at making the Roster..
The 5th Rd Pick Dennis Kelley at #153 looks to be the only real reach out of the group and there were many good players still on the Board #153 (RB’s V Ballard, C Rainey, WR’s J Criner, & M Jones , Safety G Iloka would have been better Values than Kelly and would have changed the Drafting Sequence in the 6th/7th rounds (Safety Antonio Allen went late in the 7th, FB Brad Smelly late in the 7th who I think can actually make the Roster)

Overall, I give an Overall Solid to High B for this 2012 Draft

Top 4 PIcks on Defense (Cox,Kendricks,Curry & Boykin) should all be able to contribute their Rookie Seasons as they start their NFL Career’s.. I expect Cox and Kendricks to be in the Rotation right away and see lots of playing time as either Starters or in a Heavy Rotation at their positions
DE Curry will get in on certain packages as he adjusts to the NFL Game and learns behind Cole,Babin and Tapp and CB/Returnman Boykin should be able to contribute right away on Special Teams and possibly get in on some Nickel Packages on Defense and possibly a few on Offense.. (maybe can really be the rold that Chad Hall did, with some reverses, bubble passes, a coupld of shovel passes..)
QB Foles is a developmental Pick who has more upside physically than Kakfa and has a legitimate NFL arm.. It will be a year or 2 before he’s ready to contribute, even as a back-up, but he does have some moxie in his game and is a natural leader and smart guy that is very coachable..

From the 5th Round on is where my Grade gets lowered to an Overall B, I am not really sure if any of these Players can ever make an impact or let alone even make the EAgles Roster. They will obviously provide Competition and Depth for the Roster at their positions.
WR McNutt has the best shot of making the Roster if he brings his A game to OTA’s/Camp from Day 1.. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how OL Kelley & Washington pan out and who knows about RB Bryce Brown (their 7th Round Pick) at 5-11 and 219lbs, he packs a punch but his lack of production and questional work ethic and lack of committment at both his stops in College (University of Tennessee and Kansas State) leave a lot be desired.. The positive is that he’s healthy and not beat up so he should come into camp with fresh legs and body and hopefully a fresh mind ..

The Eagles had a sizzling start to the Draft but I was a little disappointed in Today’s selections after being jacked up with their first 3 Rounds , so my Overall Grade went from a B +/A – down to a Solid B

What’s everyone else’s thoughts…

On paper the draft looks pretty good. I think my favorite pick is the Kendricks one…I just really think this dude has serious potential. On top of that he has a bad ass attitude which is what this LB corps lacked last year.

Also after this draft, you hope they won’t need to spend high picks on a Dline again next year.

They need to sign a serious backup for Shady tho. Im not a big fan of what I saw in Dion Lewis. And hopefully Bell at safety his skills might not be great but from everything I read the dude was a leader on the field. Adding leadership like that along to go with Ryans is a must to keep this defense from chocking away big games at the end like they did last year.

Plax would have been a nice addition after the draft for certain situations but I don’t think thats happening anymore. He wouldn’t need to start and play many snaps like he did on the JEts so I think it would make him much more productive by keeping him fresh. Djax and Maclin are good for me but on a 3rd down conversion or at the end of games in the 4th give me Plax who i can trust to catch anything if its near him

I think this was a great draft. To me you look at the 1st 5 picks and i think they hit on all of them. Cox is a beast, Kendrick is a tackling machine and is a missile, Curry will be a great rotational rusher (I believe Tapp will be cut) Foles has great size and arm will need time to develop and Boykin was a great pick in the 4th. He will compete for nickle back and will help our return game instantly. I give them a easy A for this draft. I feel it couldn’t of worked out better. So Paulman i can’t see how you can criticize them for later picks.

I think the draft was an “A” grade. I beleive this draft talent will bond quickly with last seasons talent. The light is going to click very quick with this draft class, the FO went and got players with a mix of big talent and smarts.

Last seasons young players are going to have an Ah Ha moment during camp which is going to make our defense imposing at the 1st and 2nd string levels. Which will make us like the Packers were two seasons ago, injury survivable.

Incase you guys forgot last month I went on record to get my prediction for the SB, so that I can the predictors club with Paul, GMCliff, DCar, JH……….LOL let me stop.

Id like to find out some more info on RB Bryce Brown… This is the Kid that Lane Kiffen took in his first season as Head Coach in Tenn. He was the #1 recruit that season and was expected to be the next big RB like Trent Richardson. When Kiffen left after his first season Brown wanted to transfer and was told he would have to pay his own way at Kansas St… Dunno what he has been doing for the past few years. He apparently only had 3 carries in the 1st game of this past season and then quit the team. Any body have any more info ???

Overall I’m liking all the Picks except the 5th rd pick OT Dennis Kelley! When Spuds asked Greg Cosell what do you think of this pick and Cosell said he has no Idea and hasn’t watched any film on him or heard of him was enough for me to think it was a waste. 6’8″ isn’t really a Howard Mudd type player which makes the pick even more odd… Not sure what the thinking there was. Would have rather seen the Eagles take Chris Rainy RB/WR/KR from Florida there or Tommy Streeter WR from the U.

I like the signing of FB Emil Igwenagu who has a real good chance of winning the FB Spot come Camp time and had him listed in many Eagle Mock Drafts as a 6th/7th Round PIck
I also like the Signing of both RB C Polk who I am surprised did not get drafted by someone and Safety P Thomas of Syacuse

Bengals did sign MLB V Burfict as an undrafted Free-Agent as HC R Lewis has a history of working./coaching players with questionable backgrounds in which some have worked out while others have not.. …

I do not care what the birds did the final 3 rounds. Overall they had one of if not the best draft in the league, especially seeing the level of talent they already had on the team, this was just a top off.. The past few days they added some serious talent, more defensive talent then i can remember in a long time. Now these guys still have to play and fit into this team but they seem like guys with alot of promise. Cox, Curry and Kendricks all were very good picks.

Vontaze burfict could possible start for the bengles this year “there is a scenario in which this could occur. Burfict will presumably compete with Dan Skuta to back up middle linebacker Rey Maualuga, who could face disciplinary action from the NFL after his latest legal issue. If Maualuga is suspended to start the season and Burfict wins the backup job, the Bengals would have Burfict in the middle of their defense in the season opener at Baltimore.”

that would be hilarious

I saw Kendricks in his press confence and Derrick Gunn was as big as him. He isnt very big. I hope they dont expect him to cover the Whittens of the world who are 10 inches taller, it aint happening. I dont care how physical he is. Hopefully he can play the run.

I love the kendricks pick but daggolden I kind of agree with you. He is going to get out positioned a lot by those six foot six TE’s quite a bit. I know he can jump and everything but still it’s going to be hard for him. But he can run with all of them that’s the plus. So ultimately I think it will be ok, as long as the d-line due their jobs.

I guess I am drinking that green juice again, I actually liked all their picks except for the 7th rounder. But anyway depth at the O-line was great, Mudd can coach up dam near anybody. Him and Washburn are great at that. And Mcnutt I think can definitely help in the red zone him and coop both close to 6’4″. They can put those guys on the outside down near the goal line for those jump balls. And boykins fills two roles for us. All and all I give them an A.

dag, you know there’s this thing where a player can cover a taller player… you might not have heard of it, but you can google it. It’s called “jumping” also known as “leaping”.

Witten and the likes are NOT 10 inches taller. And there’s more to coverage than just “the tallest guy wins”. Kendricks is MUCH faster than any of the TEs, and he’s got excellent leaping ability and very good coverage skills – the man can jump and knock the ball away in time.

The kansas state running back has loser all over him. A wasted draft pick.

They should have signed him as a free agent.

If he quit in college because he could not start, what will he do when he has no chance of starting ahead of McCoy??

Over all, the Eagles are going to get a lot out of this draft class.

Finally a kick returner.

It looks like Andy let Washburn run the 1st have of the draft and crusty old offensive line coach have the bottom part of the draft.

Good for Andy.

Instead of a bunch of players who can play 3 positions and stink at all 3, they drafted football players.

It looks like the Saints have imploded.

So you have the 49ers, Giants and Packers.

. You would think that Bryce Brown would think that making a NFL roster would pay him more on a yearly basis then he probably would ever make in his whole life. That making a NFL roster and actually being average probably gets him a 3-5 year span in the NFL which he would make more money than he will make the rest of his life. I just dont understand how players dont understand this. Maybe he gets that and comes in as a player.

dixiefan – Your point is extremely valid. Some guys on here are so arrogant, they think they know everything about a player – even more than Mudd, with less experience, less access to information, and less expertise than the best OL coach in recent NFL history. PA THE TIC

Dag – good point. BSM – he’s got the size and the ability. It just seems like some weird shit went on in college for him – that ‘family’ stuff is so incredibly vague. It was a 0 risk pick, with a lot of potential reward.

RB – we got Shady – nothing needs to be said.
Behind him? Three young backs who had some significant success in college – Dixon, Brown, Polk. We only need one or two of them to pan out – to take a very limited amount of snaps behind Shady. AND we can still sign Addai, Forsett or one of the other decent vets.

We’re in GOOD SHAPE at RB with potential for 3 rooks/2nd year players to really develop and shine.

Turk – because you can be down on a 7th rounder. This draft looks so good that BSM has to scrap to find something to hate. Just like some say a team ‘reaches’ for a player – BSM is ‘reaching’ for something to hate.

PA THE TIC.

BSM is a sad miserable excuse for a football fan.

jott – Boykin improves the secondary – big time. Addition by subtraction in the case of Samuel improves the secondary – no more ego logjam messing up the schemes and ignoring his responsibilities leaving the safeties exposed. No more ‘gimme’ bubble screens and short passes because he doesn’t care about covering the guy if there’s a chance he can go for the pick. We got rid of our least willing tackler. We got rid of our worst fit for the new scheme.

New improved secondary coach.

And we dramatically improved the front 7 – can you disagree? That always has a big effect on the secondary.

And we could still sign Bell.

Watching the litte film/highights of RB Brown, he’s a one-step and cut up the field type of runner which really works best in Mudd’s Scheme Blocking.. and I am sure the Eagles would like to find more a straight-ahead between the Tackles runner to help counter the dance, and big play capability of LeShean McCoy..

Ha, so we all know Kiper is pretty much a useless tool. That said – check out his draft grades. Eagles A – rest of NFC East C+.

If you look at the rest of the NFC East teams’ drafts, they really didn’t do all that much. Washington turned their QB weakness into a real strength, but they still are really weak at pretty much every other position save for maybe TE. No threat there, especially with our new front 7.

Dallas really upgraded their corners this year. Ok. Thats about it.

Giants got two new toys on offense, but still, they’re likely to take a big slump after a superbowl as is usually the trend. If Bradshaw continues to have injury issues, and the rookie doesn’t turn out great, they’re a very stoppable team.

Gotta like it.

This years run up tot he Draft was an informative and fun one where lots of posters had lots of good ideas, mocks and anaylisis/opinions on many players which definitely makes it more fun….
I think many of us hit on some picks or 2 ( which is bound to happen since we made so many predictions/mocks to begin with…ha ha) but there is always a fun part of the Football Season when getting ready for the Draft which kind of kicks of Football Season (Along with Free-Agency)

Now it’s time to sign some Undrafted Free-Agents which I belive we will see
a TE,RB,FB,Safety,WR and LB added to add more depth & competition by CAmp Time.. .Is it 80 Players maximum that a team must go to start a Season as far as OTA’s/Summer Camp go…

Cowbys and Redksins had some very questionalble Drafts after their Top Selections of Claiborn and RGIII
What the heck is Redksins taking QB K Cousins in the 4th ROund ???

I think the GIants had a pretty good Draft which focused on their biggest area of need which is their OL and some RB & WR depth.. They drafted some prominsing OL in B Mosley (4th) and M Mccants (6th Rd) who I really like as future starters and Mosley may see some snaps at RT his Rookie Seaso. The Giants added a quality RB, a big-Wr threat to replace and Manningham and a nickle CB/Retrunman in CB J Horsely so they did a pretty good job…
Remember they will have their Top 2 Players picked last Draft 100% for the starat of their OTA/Camps with CB Prince AMukurama nad DT Marvin Austin so the Giants are loaded with Talent on the Defensive side of the Ball and they also acquired MLB Keith Rivers who whn healthy is a Pro-Bowl Caliber player..

The Rams,Bengals Drafts were very Impressive and remember the Bengals when to the PLayoffs last year in tough AFC Nortrh Division

They added 2 1st Year Starters in CB D Kirkpatrick and OG K Zeitner
and then 2 very good Rotational Players at DT’s in D Still and Brandon Thmpson
Then Added 2 good young WR’s in M Sanu and Marvin Jones to go along with AJ Green THEN TE O Charles to compleement talented TE J Grescham
and then added Safety G Iloka for Special Teams/Depth at Safety and a qwuality RB In D Herron from Ohio State..
It may not have the flashy big names, but what the Bengals did this Draft from beginning to end is probably the best job I have seen a Team do in a long time…

I think a few teams did not help themselves mch in the Draft

The NY Jets with 2 Potential Starts or Duds with their Top 2 PIcks in
DE Coples & WR S Hill … With all the distractions of their current Team with Tebow/Sanchez Drafma, Sanches/Holmes Drama and now the drama of CB D Revis on possible Hold-out again after signing a nice extension is not the type of environemnt you want to 2 highly talented players who are lacking in consistent production, maturity and work eithic anmd proabbly need a strong locker room and leadership to excell in and I am not sure that’s the Jets right now leading into the 2012 Season

Saints and Falcons had questionable Drafts also…
Falcons taking a FB in the 3rd ROund when they were listed as 6th Round Propsects..

Eagles, Rams and TB Bucs in the NFC East had Great Drafts and even the Panthers was pretty good as did the PAckers who wnet Defense with their 1st 5 sleections and good some beed along that Def Front 7 which got pushed around last year..

Eagles had a tremendous draft. Remember, its not really about players, its about positions.

I say that because, statistically, at least 1/2 the guys the Eagles’ picked (or any team picked) will not be in the NFL in 3 years. We can be excited all we want about “who” the Eagles picked, but remember, that some of them, (perhaps Cox, perhaps Kendricks, perhaps Curry) will flame out. Maybe they’ll all be stars…who know.

So, instead of looking at the names, we look at the positions, and in that sense the Eagles hit a homerun.

DT
– have: one real star in Jenkins who is over 30 and history of injuries, several other good, but not special players
– got pretty much consensus best DT prospect available

LB
– have: Need for an upgrade
– got: Pac 10 D player of the year

DE
-have 2 stars, both on wrong side of 30, a question mark in Graham, and some other guys
– got: most productive college DE last 2 years

QB
-have: a injury prone, 32 yr old innacurate piece of garbage (:))
– got: potential replacement (pleasepleasepleaseplease work out)

Kick returner:
-have: nothing
-got: solid college returner with bonus that he may be able to play slot DB, though I think he was brought in primarily as a returner

OL:
-have: question marks at OT with Peter’s injury. Questionable depth in Dunlop
-got: 2 prospects to replace him in Washinton and Kelly. Hopefully one comes through

WR
have: a huge need for big posession WR
-got: big posession WR

RB
– have a superstar with questions at backup
– got 2 rbs (one draft, one FA) to compete for backup spot

Honestly, I cannot imagine how the Birds could have done better addressing their needs. They’re almost universally getting good grades by the draftnicks out there (though I give them as much cred as I do Songs’ evaluations of LBs).

Fantastic couple of days. Lets hope over half of these guys pan out.

We should talk about Burfict a little more though.

Great points VV – I know the first thing you did was look at the guys completion percentage in college..

I think two issues left to take care of as they flush out the roster –

I would like a veteran S added to the roster.. I know they got a guy UFA – but would still like to see a vet added to support Coleman, Allen and Jarret

I would also like to see a veteran back up RB added – one that has a proven ability to catch the ball and pick up the blitz…

other then that – yeah – birds hit the wickets with the other picks – who knows between Cox, Brocker, Still Worhy or Poe who will be the best DT – but at least they hit the positions

I like the Signings of Underafted Free-Agents
Keep an eye on FB Emil Igwenago from U-Mass at 6-1 249lbs is really a blocking FB who is also athletic enough to catch the ball out of the Backfield
I believe he has a real shot of winning a spot on the 53 Man roster as a FB and Special Teamer and should be in a good battle with Stan Havilli and kind of reminds me of a young Leornard Weaver a bit..
Also RB Chris Polk from Washington, when heathly is a very powerful back
Syracuse Safety Phillip Thomas, Oregon CB Cliff Harris, Tulsa WR Demarius Johnson and TE Chase Ford from Miami and a couple of others…

Great draft eagles I have a question, a lot of guys on here say that if your 5’11” and leap 38″ or whatever you can cover a guy 6’5″ right. But what if the tight end he is covering can also jump 38″ who wins that battle. I am referring to kendricks. I am picking a little bit I think the kid would be great on the weakside or the middle eventually. But playing the sam you need some size. TImes yours.

There is definetly a change, look Andy has lost some weight! All three phases of the team are going gel very quickly this time around. Teams will not get the advantage of playing us while we figure ourselves out.

I think that the Eagles have a solid mental understanding of who they are on OFF, DEF, and Spec. I feel that the theme this training camp will be sound, solid fumdementals and extremely reduced error football.
