Dawkins Says Reid Is On The Hot Seat

Recently retired star and former Eagle Brian Dawkins offered some interesting comments when asked should Andy Reid be on the hot seat during his appearance on the Rich Eisen Podcast two days ago.

“Yes, here’s the thing,” Dawkins said. “When you go out and you get some of the pieces that they got, that’s telling the fan base something. Even coming into this year … some of the things they’re doing this offseason, that’s telling the fan base something. You then have to show … what are you as a coach?”

Although these comments may seem offensive, I completely agree with the former safety. With the Eagles having maybe the most talented roster in the NFL last season, the failure to make a postseason appearance was completely unacceptable. With that being said, however, having a group of individually talented guys does not always translate easily into a great team, especially in just one year. But with that year under his belt and the pressure on, Andy Reid leading this team to prominence is no longer optional; it’s a requirement.

“This is the year to me that says . . . If there was a chance for this team go far it should be this year.” Dawkins said. “You should know your team, you should know who can do what.”

With the addition of only a few new pieces, Andy Reid and Co. should definitely be well-acquainted with his players this time around. Whether he likes it or not, he’s on the hot seat; let’s hope the pressure motivates him and the Eagles to redeem themselves of last season’s disappointment.

how do his comments sound even remotely “offensive”?

seems to me when someone speaks the truth as Dawkins did the truth is somehow offensive, pretty much the theme on this blog, speak your mind, speak the truth wait for all the banter to follow

No doubt Coach AR is on the Hot Seat like every other Coach in the NFL is..
Giants HC Tom COughlin was on the Hot Seat as recent as Week #12 last Season after lbeing 7-5.. Then A great month of Football and a stud PLayoff Run with a SUper Bowl win erases all the negativity… Bottom line about Coach Ar.. It’s always going to come down to the Players in my opinion.. I don’t want to hear about Pass to run ratio, injuries, or the other peripheal stuff, Players Win Games…It’s time for the Players to Step up, Perform and Execute at a High Level and Win when it counts..

Paulman, your dead wrong saying its all about the players stepping up, its all about coaching! A perfect example was our D last year, good players not having a clue on what they were doing, coaches not playing them to their strengths, not a good game plan ect, look at the Bulls, couldnt win nothing till Jackson got there, same thing when he went to the Lakers, the Patriots, look at the recievers they had when they won their SBs and Brady at that time was only a couple years from being nothing but a late round pick, its all about coaching, no excuse this year unless half the team gets injured.

SO it’s Juan Castillo’s/Coach AR fault that Asmo get’s burned by Giants Nicks and Cruz in Both Games, That Curt Coleman misses an open field tackle alloing a TD, that Vick has 5 Turnovers vs the BIlls, that the entire Team folds like a cheap suit versus the 49ers after having a 20 point lead…

When I look around the NFL and at other Teams and Coaches..
I see HC Mikel Shanahan who could do no wrong as a HC when he has a QB named J Elway, and RB Terrell DAvis and TE SHarpe and WR R Smith.. All of a sudden he’s a bum and can’t coach with the Redskins…
I see Mikle Holmgrem considered an Genius by many when Coaching those great Packer Teams witgh Farve and now his next 2 stops in Seattle and presently Clevelend, he can’t put a Team together to play .500 ball…
COlts Jim Caldwell wins more games his 1st 3 Seasons as a HC of the Colts.. then Loses QB P Manning for the 2011 Season and they win 2 games and he loses his job..
TB J Gruden wins a Super Bowl with a Stud Defense (built by T Dungy) and with a game manager at QWB named Brad Johnson… Then moves on to Oakland with much more talent and can’t win a pLayoff game…
You guys can bitch all you want about schemes, play-calling, it still gets down to the Players making plays despite the circumstances at least thats what Championship Teams do.

no – dawkins comments wwere not offensive nor were the negative –

Jake your hit a great point – when people speak the ‘TRUTH’ it should not be considered negative or offensive – that is correct – but the problem with this blog isn’t people being offended by the truth, its people being offended by the BS, the lies, the continous negative portrayal of everything, the failure to view the eagles in the realm of a league of 32 teams that all have the same goals and desires – for example – you would think – after reading the blog, that the eagles will be the only team in the NFL going into this season with a question mark at a position, the only team that may not have a pro bowler at every psotion including several back ups –

here is one of the biggest LIES from one of your biggest fans Jake – Graham –

Graham was an freakin beast in college, and by all accounts was having a solid rookie season – you ‘friend’ then makes shit up (the opposite of the truth) and sez – oh Graham was a reach (no he wasn;t) that he should have been a 3-4 LB (no – every report said he was so good he could do both – posted them multiple times) that he didn;t start as a rookie (wrong 6 games) – I have heard he was small (nope – he is shorter – but not small – exactly 2 pounds less then JPP) weak (nope – plyed like abeast in college, I think the highest BP total at combine – now cue the stupid Mike Mamula comment with respect to any stats from combine) and that he is a bust and ass becuase last year he was recovering from microfracture surgery (2 of the top 3 DEs that year suffered knee injuries –

see jake – that’s not the truth – and even if you say ‘bust’ and ‘ass’ are opinions, when someone prejudice, negative opinion is based in lies.. that’s just ignorance.

how about Andy Reid’s success was becuase of the Ray Rhodes D holdovers?? How many times has that one gotten legs?

Or how about Andy Reid isn’t good with Challenge flags? Actaully he does very well with challenege flags – in the top 3rd in NFL – the worst – Bill BEllicheck – how about Songs lies about the Eagles personel department.. somehow when compared to the Giants, Steelers, Ravens and PAts over the last 5 years the eagles meet or exceed those departments in drafting in I think 7 categories… but those comparisons don;t have criteria that shift or move becuase people are trying to find fault..

speak your mind jake – sure… but if you blog something stupid like ‘Reid listened to the fans and got TO and look at the result’ and yeah – expect a follow up – the team went from 12-4 to 13-3 – TO was OUT for the playoffs – so having TO verse not having TO was 1 win – the same WRs (Pinkston, Mitchell and Lewis) won the plaoyoff games dude – TO did not play in playoffs and the eagles the previous 2 years had gone 12-4 and had HF advantage.. the 2004 DEFENSE was the best under the Reid era..

so expect a rebuttal when you say ‘it was because Reid listened to the fans and brought in TO – cause the next year the team tanked in my opinion due to TOs nonsense – you can say it was becuase the eagles refused to re-negotiate a 7 year deal signed 1 year prior – that would be a valid argument..

Most of things written on this board are OPINION….Not facts…

Whether or not graham is a bust is a matter of OPINION.

Nobody has a monopoly on facts here.. Lets keep things in perspective.

people are bickering over differing opinions on this board.

What Dawkins said was his honest OPINION about whether or not Reid should be on the hot seat this season.

I respect his opinion and agree with it.

Paulman, your proving my point, it was Gruden who put them over the top, Dungy couldnt do it, look at the Ravens, they had that great D but they didnt win it till Billick got there, and won it with Dilfer as their QB, you talk about Nnamdi, it was the coaches who took him away from what he did best in Oakland and tried to make him do the things the Packers had Charles Woodson doing for them, they even admitted it, thats all coaching buddy.

It was not GRuden Andrew P, it was the Players who performed and executed at a high enough level consistently to win the big Games..
From QB Brad Johnson, FB Mike Alstott, RB Warrick Dunn to WR joe Jerivicios , etc, etc… Gruden had a nice systemt to take advantage of their skills and talents, but bottom line, it was these players who stepped up and go the job down when it counted..
It if was all Coach Gruden, then why didn’t he win anything with a more talented squad while with the Raiders.. It’s SPorts, atheletics, it’s competition at the highest level of Football.. The teams who have the most players who want it the most and are committed to doing so in a “team concept” are generally the Teams that win, not the Teams with some Coach deemed to be a “Genius”.. I am not saying Teams are going to win with bad Coaching for they celarly are not, the when you look around the NFL, as in any Professional SPort, the differences in the Coaching Aspect is a lot less that talent, execution and drive of it’s players… It’s Players that Win Games and Championships and not Coaches..

well Rash – have to disagree with you – we all should have a monopoly of facts – a fact is a fact – it can;t be changed…. you can;t say the eagles D was not ranked # 10 last year – it is a FACT it was… you can;t say the team did not lose 8 games last year – they did – that;s a fact

you can’t say the team did not turn the ball over a record number of times – they did – that’s a FACT –

whereyou have your issue is when you make an opinion statement – the eagles have ‘ignored’ the Safety position.. for example – that is an opinion.. the FACT is they have spent 2 2nd round draft picks, a 7th round draft pick and have the 2 starters returning from last year – those are FACTS – now does the opinion the are ‘ignoring’ the safety position balance out with ‘the blind spot’ balance out with the fact the eagles have spent 2 2nd rounders in the last 3 years on the posiiton…

now when the eagles draft pciks are analyzed against other teams in a fair – non-changing criteria, analysis and given a rating – is that FACT or Opinion – and if someone has an opinion that flys directly in the face of facts – what is that?

for example – people have the OPINION we should bring in Gruden as a coach – he did fine in Oakland.. got traded’ (yes traded) to Tampa – won a SB – the team then proceeded to tank tot he point he got fired.. now the team Gruden inhereited had a monster D and no O – my OPINION is that Gruden gave them just enough O to win it.. but then when the D broke up in FA and no new drsaft picks – Gruden couldn’t hold it together.. Now it is a FACT Gruden won a SB, it is a FACT he was then later fired becuase the team tanked, it is a FACT that several of the D players actaully creditied Dungy and Kiflin for that SB (warren sapp I think said something along the lines of Dungy won the SB – not Gruden), yet it is the OPINION of several people on this site that Gruden would be a better coach based on the FACT he was once the coach of a team that won a SB – an opinion formed in my opinion based on ignoring the FACTs that happened after that SB win..

same could be said for the whole lets bring in Spagnola to be the DC –

most OPINIONS are based in FACTS – at least they should be – ever write a college term paper – facts and opinions need to be supported – and you typically don;t do to well if you have an opinion that is not supported by facts –

I may not like several of Obama’s policies – but you really can;t complain the dude didn;t go get Bin Laden can you? You may not like the selection of Jarret in the 2nd round – but does that mean the eagles can;t draft when all eveidence flies in the face of that?

Some NFL News (in case anyone wants some real news)

JAguars Top PIck WR Justin Blackmon arrested in Oklahoma for Aggravated DWI (BAC higer than .15) .. This is Blackmon’s 2nd DWI Offfense in 2 YEars and will probably get a call from the Commisioner’s Office.. The Jags moved up 2 Spots from 7th to 5th to Draft Blackmon… Not a very good way to start your Career for a Team/Franchise desperate for some positive./good news and MJ-Drew COntinues to hold out…
Ravens LB Mike McAdoo tore his Achilles at OTA last week and is done for the Season, McAdoo was in line to replace the already injured Terrell Suggs leaving the Ravens awful think at OLB… and now puts a lot of Pressure on Top Draft Pick Cortney Upshaw, who by some reports, has been struggling to pick-up the complicated schemes the Ravens employ with their LB’s… Top pick from a couple of Drafts ago Sergio Kindle still has not been able to win the Coaches over to show that he’s ready to Step up for the Starters OLB positon .. Kindle you may recall fell off a balcony celebrated after a College Party after he was Drafted and incurred serious back and neck injuries and has been unable to really play 100% and may never be….
(This goes to show that there are other Teams that have problems with High-Draft Picks too– recent Story about DT Nick fairley of the Detroit LIons who has been arrested Twice in the last 6 Weeks in Alabama on Marijuana and fleeing from the Poilice Charges this Off-Season, receall the Lions picked him in the 1st Round last year, he injured his foot in Camp, was out of shape, had issues learning the playbook and basically had a lost Season, now he’s about to enter his 2nd Season and this crap happens in his hometown of Mobile,Al, HE’s reportedly 20-30 lbs overweight and there has now been talk in the Lions Organization to simply cut the chord with this guy and move on..
I bring this stuff up for everyone goes bonkers about Brandon Graham being a bust, Graham blew out his knee in December of 2010 for Jehovah’s sakes, and probably should have been IR all of last season since he physically and probabl more importantly wasn’t emotionally wasn’t ready to play..

eagles finally got the draft right this year after so many failed attempts, but it’s too late – this team will not win this year and the next coach will come into a great situation and will win
Eagles will finish 9-7

Dcar – “the hot seat” – how are we defining it –

some or per haps most fans will want him fired after the season if the team doesn’t win a superbowl or come really close? If you define it that way, it’s no different from ever so it’s kind of a weak thing to say – it says nothing.

OR

Lurie/Banner will fire him if he doesn’t win a SB or come close? Well if that’s the definition of the hot seat, only Lurie and Banner can know. And they haven’t said so. You can say they “almost” or “basically”, but they didn’t say so. So to state that he’s “on the hot seat” for a fact, is bullshit. He MIGHT be, but that’s only if Banner/Lurie already made up their mind on specific criteria, and with that specific decision. There’s no incentive or mandate for them to have made up their mind. They can and most likely will wait until the end of the season to make the decision on Reid’s future.

See – THOSE are FACTS.

Fact – we cannot know for sure whether Reid is on the hot seat because Lurie did not say so, and we don’t know his thoughts.

Suck it Dcar – hopefully you’re enjoying beer week and go phils.

see Rasheed – read Jott’s post above – the opinion ‘so many failed attempts’ in the draft which flies directly in the face of multiple draft rankings that rate the eagles solid in drafting – again – I recently posted the article and stats that had the eagles equal or ahead of the Giants, Sttelers, Ravens and Patriots in drafting over the last 5 years – and then someone posts an ‘opinion’ of ‘so many failed attempts’ based on what? Graham and Allen injuring there knees?

Schiller, Here goes Luries statements concerning Reid.

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said he’s not afraid of firing the team’s coach and pursuing the next coach to lead this team, but he doesn’t feel that it needs to happen this year, because he’s confident 2012 will be a much better year for Andy Reid and his players.

“If I didn’t think next year would be substantially better, I’d be standing up here announcing a coaching change,” Lurie said.

So Lurie is saying this is a make or break year for him, Lurie is saying he has confidence that Reid will do a better job THIS year but doesnt go beyond that, they also did not renew his contract which means hes coaching on a one year deal, last year of a contract not being renewed? how isnt that ownership telling Reid he has one year to turn it around or hes gone? These are FACTS! Reid is on the hot seat!

Every once in a while you may get a Barry Switzer situation, where the team is so great you or I could coach it. But in general I will take a Phil Jackson any day of the week. Let me ask you guys something, if we were to come over the wire that the Eagles signed the head coach from New England. There would not be one guy on here that would not be putting the Eagles in the Superbowl and winning it. Right now a lot of guys feel great about the team but nobody is predicting a superbowl win. You add coach B to the team we would be dancing down broad street in June.

Navy…you’re missing it again.
No one here believes a pro bowler is needed at every position…make a record to avoid future exaggerations.

The discontent began against reid and this front office replaced top talent with less than pedestrian players, lowering the talent on the team, yet told us the Superbowl was the goal.

got it?

We didn’t ave pro bowlers at every position the year we went to the Super Bowl.

If the Eagles would have found away to take care of the extraordinary talent and not replace them with sub-standard bums there would be a lombardi in the case right now.
