Practice Review: Eagles Have Their First Full-Roster Workout

It’s not official, but what from what I’ve heard, Andy Reid has decided to delay the hitting for a day and begin the pounding on Saturday rather than on Friday.

Yesterday, Eagles tight end Brent Celek suffered a mild sprain of his right knee early in the first full-roster practice, so the backups Clay Harbor and Brett Brackett.

It’s important to observe who is starting and getting the reps when a team starts training camp because it gives you an idea of what the coaching staff is thinking from a personnel standpoint.  There aren’t many chances on the offensive side of the ball for the Eagles, but I wonder how much they will use fullback this year.  I think a lot will depend on how Stanley Havili blocks when the hitting starts on Saturday.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Eagles starting offense was Michael Vick at quarterback, LeSean McCoy at running back, DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin at the wide receiver spots with Brent Celek at tight end and Havili at fullback. Clay Harbor comes on the field as the second tight end when they switch into two-tight end sets.

I think the backup for McCoy will get a few carries each game this year because Reid wants to keep number 25 fresh for the entire sesason.  Dion Lewis will try to maintain that spot the entire season.  Checkout this article in Comcast Sportsnet about how he wants to the get the fire alarm incident behind him.

I know Andy Reid has said publicly that the fact the Birds have been working out tight ends has nothing to do with Harbor isn’t true.  I still don’t think the coaching staff is happy about throwing the ball to a tight end who drops a lot of passes.  Check out this article on PhiladelphiaEagles.com where Harbor says he’s not letting it bother him.  The youngster had better step up his game.

On the offensive line, Demetress Bell, Evan Mathis, Jason Kelce, Danny Watkins and Todd Herremans were the starters going from left to right.  The second team offensive line was King Dunlap, Julian Vandervelde, Dallas Reynolds, Mike Gibson and Dennis Kelly.

Bell needs as many reps as possible with this unit so he can get to the point where he and Mathis can anticipate what each other are going to do without communicating it verbally.  The offensive coaches need to see him play enough so that they know when he needs pass-blocking help from the tight end of fullback.

On the defensive line, Derek Landri was lining up at the defensive tackle spot in place of Mike Patterson with first round pick Fletcher Cox working with the second team defensive line with big Antonio Dixon opposite him. Check out the article in CSNPhilly.com where Landri talks about how mad he was to be ignored for most of this past off-season before signing back with the Eagles.

Outside the starting defensive ends were Trent Cole and Jason Babin with the first team and Brandon Graham and Darryl Tapp were with the second-team defensive line.  Phillip Hunt was playing with the third-string line, but he made a few plays to standout during the workout.

Today at the linebacker spots you had DeMeco Ryans in the middle with Mychal Kendricks on the strongside and Brian Rolle on the weak side.   Clay Matthews is the second team middle linebacker with Jamar Chaney and Akeem Jordan outside.

In the secondary, you’ve got Nmandi Asomugha on the right corner, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie on the left corner with Nate Allen and Kurt Coleman at the safety positions.

The Birds had four players who couldn’t practice;  defensive tackle Mike Patterson, offensive tackle Jason Peters, and safety Colt Anderson were all sidelined due to injury.  Recently signed punter Matt McBriar has to wait three days to practice after being signed before he can practice.
