Last week, the Philadelphia Flyers announced that they had re-signed Wayne Simmonds to a six year extension.
As of this afternoon, he’s not the only Flyer to receive a six year extension this off-season; Scott Hartnell can now be added to the list.
Hartnell has been with the Flyers since the 2007-08 season, posting 24 goals twice, 30 goals once, and hitting 37 goals this past season while playing alongside Claude Giroux. It may be unrealistic to think he can hit 37 goals again, but he’s become one of the “heart and soul” members of the team as well as an engaged and charitable member of the organization.
There weren’t many Flyers that made it to the prospect training camp earlier this summer, but Hartnell was there bright and early along with the fans.
There has been no information made available yet on the dollars and cents, but considering his current deal was worth an average $4.2 million per year, it’s likely to hit north of $5.0 million.
UPDATE: Per Anthony San Filippo, he is “hearing” the contract is worth $33 million, or $5.5 million per year.
UPDATE X2: Per Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly, the actual value is $28.5 million, or $4.75 million per year. This seems much more in line with what he’s “worth,” both in production and intangibles.
Kimmo Timonen remains the only “vital” member of the team that does not have a contract beyond this season. It has been speculated that he may consider a one-year extension at the end of the season, but it will likely depend on how his health holds up.

Hartnell and Simmonds couldn’t get the puck off the boards against NJ in the post season — I would have waited to see if they can improve on skill set before committing 5-6 years a piece for them
2 Years from now is will be like the present day Phillies situation, where they have a Roster Full of Under-achieving players who earn too high of a Salary to be able to trade them..
haters
37 goals and 30 assists in the regular season and he is 30. I don’t like the length of the deal, but no reason to think that he won’t continue to score 30 + goals for the next 3-4 years.
And nobody did anything agains NJ, so should they cut the entire team?
Too long! Wasn’t just a year ago, that we couldn’t drive him out of town fast enough?!? He had a good year, & Simmonds still has alot of upside, & I also like both of them, but both of these contracts are overreactions by Homer, due to him getting stiffed on the Weber, Suter, & Parise deals. This dude JUST CAN’T HELP HIMSELF! I HOPE HE DIDN’T include any NTC/ NMC’s?!?
