The Advancement Of NIck Foles Changes Things For Reid And Vick

The development of Eagles rookie backup quarterback Nick Foles may not look like a major factor on this year’s Philadelphia ball club from where you’re sitting, but it could have major repercussions on the circumstances of Birds head coach Andy Reid and starting quarterback Michael Vick.

The advancement of Foles puts Reid in a more secure position.  First of all, he was the guy who pulled the trigger on drafting him.  Yes, team GM Howie Roseman deserves some of the credit but Reid is the guy with the reputation of knowing quarterbacks.

If Vick were to get hurt or struggle, Reid would still be a hard person to fire because of his reputation as a great developer of quarterbacks.  Would you get rid of Reid despite the fact that he identified and drafted Foles, then started to develop him.  There are few people in the league with the reputation Reid has of being able to develop quarterbacks.

He’s known for putting quarterbacks in position to succeed.  A.J. Feeley, Donovan McNabb and Kevin Kolb have all played their best football here in Philadelphia for Andy.  They’ve all been busts after they’ve left here.

On the other hand, the advancement of Foles doesn’t help Vick, if anything it puts more pressure on him to have a big year.  If we assume that Foles continues to play well in the Cleveland and New York Jets preseason games, and Vick struggles this year with turnovers or injuries, the Eagles will be able to say good-bye to number 7 at the end of the season.  They can do so with the knowledge that his heir apparent is already on the roster.

Remember that the Eagles negotiated a contract with Vick which allows them to say good-bye to him after this season without much financial discomfort.  That wasn’t an accident or a coincidence.

I emphasize that it could be Vick’s inconsistent play or his inability to stay healthy which could end his time in Philadelphia.  If he turns the ball over like he did a year ago or is unable to lead the Birds to the playoffs, it could lead to his end here with the Eagles.  If he plays well but continues to be sidelined by injuries that could lead to him leaving here after the season.

You can believe that Vick sees Foles improving and advancing.  The speedy quarterback knows what time it is.  We knew this was going to be a big year for Vick during the off season, but the advancement of Foles has made the year even bigger.  If we thought Vick was going to be on the hot seat before the preseason games, Foles’ play has him sitting on an even hotter seat now.

I feel nauseated after reading this article—you mean Nick Foles’ development keeps (Mr. I got to do a better job) Reid here —– feels like I just got punched in the head with a liter of Mad Dawg 20/20

G .. you got this one twisted, andy reid’s fate rest on Vick. they are joined at the hip.andy’s fate also rest on the defense. andy and jenkins got into it the other day because Jenkins is a respected veteran and knows that the flow of the defense isnt right, THEY HAVE NO RESPECT FOR CASTILLO AS THE DC.
and everything flows from there, a strong personality like washburn hurts more than helps, the defensive coaches are not on one accord. and you have to start at the top …. ANDY

I definitely agree with you here G. The kid could be a beast and Andy will benefit from that greatly. Having said that it’s still a good time to bring Donovan McNabb in to play the back-up role for a year or two versus just throwing the kid into the fire. I already feel much better about the long term prospects of the Eagles…I just hope he’s not a Bobby Hoying.

Umm.. Butch is it?.. Since when has McNabb been known for helping the development of young QBs?..That’s an absurd suggestion and hope you were joking.

Right now, I would take Mcnabb over bum ass Kafka and Edwards knowing if Vick went down he could step in and run the offense better than both of these bums, and give Foles an opportunity to learn from the greatest QB to ever wear Eagles green.

Also, it would show appreciation for the franchise QB that help turn our dismal franchise around, so I’m all for getting Mcnabb in.

Will you F^#@ing guys get off the McNabb train, WTF! It’s the same $#!T that went on with Burress & Fat Albert last year. He was done 3 years ago, why the hell would you want to bring him in now. Isn’t the object to get better & move forward? He’s SO great, that’s why teams are lining up to sign him, in a QB starved league, RIGHT? Cut it the f^#@ out. He’s cooked, & WILL NOT BE BACK HERE!

As an eagles fan you have to be pissed, all this talk about dynasty, how much work he’s done in the off season, and the starting quarterback for your Philadelphia eagles will have taken a whole six snaps from center going into the regular season, for failing to be smart with the football, making the same rookie mistake that plagues his career, and for how good foles may be, at best hrs the future, not the present

I really like what I have seen in Foles, and I think Vick’s faults (holding the ball too long) will always expose him to physical harm. If the season plays out as I expect Nick will start as many games as Vick, and we will be developing a new starter.

You guys have to be kidding about bringing back McNabb, His Football Career is done and was done about 2 years ago which is why the Eagles,Redskins and Vikings all gave up on him.. Too many eagles Fans constantly live in the Past
.. Bring McNabb back, Bring Dawkins Back, Bring John Runyan back, Bring Albert Haynesworth in , Bring Randy Moss in, Bring in Plaxico Burress in, Bring Westbrook Back.. Football is like Time, and it keeps moving on and 2-3 years of being out of the sport or barely playing is a lifetime as far as Football in concerned, be happy the Eagles had some good players in years past..2012 Team is about the here and now and getting a old washed up back-up does not help this Team out at all.. If Vick gets hurt and misses 2-3-4 ganmes, then Foles steps in to replace and if nothing else, this helps FOles for the Future.. Right now the Eagles are probably a 6th-8th Place Team in the NFC and that’s with a healthy Vick at QB

Some really false assumptions about # 5 here. He was the best QB in Eagles history, but he has no business coming back here.

1) he wouldn’t want to be a back-up, so forget that
2) what about his play in the last couple of years makes you think that he would be ready to play?
3) How can you say that he develops young players? What proof do you have of that? The reports out of Minny and Wash is that he wasn’t training hard any more and that he didn’t know the playbook. Sounds like a great mentor to me.

Songs- you continue to be the troll of this site. Congrats on continuosly spouting nonsense to get everyone fired up.

Cobb is here perpetuating the myth of Reid as knowing QBs, and cites Kolb and Feeley as examples. “You cannot be serious.” Kolb, Feeley, Detmer, Kafka were all drafted by Reid and are all lifetime second- and third-stringers. Reid also brought on Jeff Blake and Mike McMahon—totally forgettable. Last year he brought in Vince Young—how did that work out? (And Trent Edwards was available!) I’ll give him credit for Vick, who is a star but not someone who can take a team deep into the season let alone playoffs, and Garcia, who played just a few games for the Eagles. So when you come down to it, McNabb is the only top tier QB Reid has drafted and who has played significant time under him. No one knows that Reid developed McNabb; he might have evolved exactly the same way under other coaches. He was old and washed up when he left the Eagles, so his later record proves nothing. As for Foles, he does look like a good one. My conclusion is that Reid got lucky drafting McNabb because most of the time he cannot tell a good QB from a severely limited one.
