Reid And Mornhinweg Have Been Working On This Game Plan For Months

The Eagles offensive brain trust of Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg have already put together the game plan and given it to the quarterbacks, Michael Vick, Nick Foles, and Trent Edwards.  Preparation is the strength of a Reid-coached team.

Vick has been working on this game plan against the Eagles scout team since June and July during the OTA’s.  He has an idea of what the first 15 plays are going to be and which receivers are going to be open on each play.

Reid and Mornhinweg are able to draw on all the plays run by offensive geniuses Bill Walsh and Mike Holmgren down through the years, plus they’ve expanded those plays with different personnel groupings, such as three wide receivers, four wide receivers, two tight ends and etc..

The Eagles head coach was taking notes throughout his time as an assistant coach under Holmgren.  He was writing down every trick of the trade.  Mornhinweg was doing the same during his time with the Niners, so they have a lot to draw from to put together a game plan.

Current ESPN NFL broadcaster Jon Gruden and Reid were roommates for awhile during their time coaching together under Holmgren with the Packers.  You could hear Gruden calling out those old west coast offense plays when he was broadcasting the Eagles when they were on ESPN earlier this preseason.

The Eagles system isn’t as purely west coast any more because they’ve put in a lot of downfield throws to take advantage of speedy receivers like DeSean Jackson.  They’ve borrowed things from the Sid Gilman, Don Coryell and Ernie Zampese offensive systems.  Gilman, Coryell and Zampese majored in deep throws.

Like professors in economics, philosophy, business or history, Walsh and Gilman developed certain schools of thought regarding the passing offense.  Walsh developed the short to intermediate passing game which emphasized both the use of  horizontal and vertical spacing.  Gilman developed the deep passing game which emphasized vertical spacing.

Joe Montana, Steve Young and Brett Favre operated the Walsh system.  Dan Fouts, Troy Aikman and Kurt Warner operated the Gilman system.  Nowadays all the offensive coordinators borrow from each other.

The Eagles system is a good one because they do both and can tailor their offense to fit their talent.  The Eagles coaching duo can put in plays for a strong-armed quarterback or a signal caller with a more accurate than strong arm.  They have both pocket passes and roll out passes.

They have game plans which can feature any of the wide receivers, tight ends or running backs depending on where they feel they get their best matchups against a particular defense.

Reid and Mornhinweg do a good of giving the quarterback a very good idea of which one of his receivers are going to be open.  Most of the time they’re right, which puts the quarterback in a great position to succeed.  Most of the time, their game plans are right on the money.

This game plan for the Browns should be rather thorough, since they’ve been working on it for quite awhile. Throughout the OTA’s and training camp, the Birds were working on their game plan for the Browns.

Reid and Mornhinweg, who have notes on Walsh and Holmgren plays from previous decades can and do put in 100’s of plays for a game.  Again, preparation is the strength of Reid’s coaching system.  During those off season workouts, the Eagles work on game plans for their first opponent of the season and the three NFC East opponents.

It makes sense.  The Birds will be playing the Giants twice, the Cowboys twice and the Redskins twice, so it’s most important that they’re prepared for those games.  If you dominate your division, you have a great chance of going to the playoffs.

The Birds have superior offensive talent to the Cleveland defense they will be facing, so they should be able to get things going relatively quickly.  Only Browns cornerback Joe Haden matches up well with their wide receivers.  The other corners will get toasted and they know it.

I gave you all those superlatives about how good Reid and Mornhinweg are when they’re game planning for an upcoming defense, but they’re not nearly as good when an opposing defensive coordinator does something which they weren’t expecting.  Making the adjustments on the run are their biggest problems.

I think of how the Eagles were being beaten by the New York Giants at Metlife Stadium a couple of years ago when Vick took upon himself to change things.   New York was running the same all-out blitz and the Birds didn’t seem to have any adjustment to it.  Vick started scrambling on his own because he wasn’t getting a lot of help from the sidelines.

This is the game plan on the Eagles, they’re great when it comes to game planning, but not nearly as good when they’re force to making adjustments during the game.

SOunds like the Eagles should go Undefeated..I still believe that both Coach AR and MM have a tendancy to get ‘too cute’ with their game plans and when you have a physical advantage over an opponent, then bring it to that Team and take advantage of the Eagles atheleticism, talent and speed as opposed to relying on gadget or trick plays and especially once inside the Red-Zone..
In other words, Keep it Simple Stupid and Execute..

Andy always beats the teams he’s suppose to beat. I just have a problem with Andy’s record against winning teams ( something like 29-40 ) okay Cleveland, no problem. go on the road against the Steelers or New orleans and get it done

If they don’t you have to payoff the national debt.

I agree with you assesment that AR and MM have a tendancy to get “cute”. They also abandon the run too often. They honestly just need to run the ball more often in the red zone. When that field shrinks, its a disadvantage to Vick, negates some oh his speed. He also needs to fit it into some tight windows, not his strong suite. They simply need to make things simple

“cute”, no way. I just hope the backup running backs have been practicing the red zone divepass. It will work this year.

Same old, tired analysis, yet true, Reid game planning to beat inferior teams, but when forced to make reactive, game time decisions against superior or equal teams, especially in crunch time, we know how that will work out, good riddance Andy Reid, take your incompetent defensive coordinator with you

1-0

get on with week 2 already because the Eagles usually beat doormats unless we’re talking about the Arizona cardinals team kicking our asses at home with a backup QB.

Feel good about this win guys becausethis will be a loooooong season

7-9

What im looking for…..

Pound the flipping ball! There will be chances to go deep down field but let start this thing off by showing teams we CAN and WILL run.

We are better from the Browns. From top to bottom our team is better and deeper. “too cute” is dead on, this is the kinda game Reid tries to put up 50 points. Just win.

Forgive me songs…. im so confused……. didnt you get just about everything you wanted?

Vick is the guy.
They grabbed nnamdi last year
we are a throw down the field team
You like ryans… right?

This is the team SONGS built, is it not? Are guys like Matthews and Jarrrett going to cost us 9 games from the bench?

Well you’re not going to see “pound the ball” Stevo.

Why do you guys keep wishing for something that isn’t going to happen?

1 – McCoy isn’t a “pound the ball” type back
2 – Reid avoids playing rookie RBs like the plague once the reg season starts
3 – Reid is a pass-first guy

How many times have you seen the Eagles’ in the 4th Q up 10 or whatever passing the ball on 1st and 10….just about every game. Not much more frustrating than watching those patented 1 minute 3 and outs when the smarter play would be to kneel down 3 times because at least the clock would run……but those frustrations only increase if you actually believe Reid will “pound the ball” as you so desperately hope for. It isn’t going to happen….

Just 2 weeks ago in preseason against Cleveland, 2nd half….big lead…2nd half…everyone just wanting game to end sans injuries….he called 22 passes and something like 13 runs…..do you honestly think that after 133 years, “Pound the rock” will become Reid’s new mantra???

..btw this is very similar to you “this will be the year Vick will change” business you also hope for……how are you with the whole leopard and his spots thing…

Gotta Luv…as for your point….I don’t think the birds will lose 9 (7 seems more likely), but you do have to remember they were a miserable 1-5 against +.500 teams….and this year we have…

Atl, NO, NYG, Det, Pitt, Balt, and possibly Carolina and TB over .500….add in a split against Dallas, and 9 losses isn’t out of the realm of possibility…though I think a little extreme…..

Stevo – Why insist on looking for what will not happen?

1 – McCoy is not a “pound the ball” type of back
2 – While BB and CP might be, Reid’s history dictates he is loath to play rookie RBs
3 – Reid is a pass-first guy.

How many times have you seen the Eagles’ with 2 score lead in the 4th and they open up with a patented 1 minute 3 and out…all passes. Too many times to mention. Just a couple weeks back in Cleveland…birds with a big league and everyone wanting to get out of there sans injuries….Reid called 2-1 passes to runs in the second half. To think he’s suddenly going to change to a “pound the rock!” type coach is silly.

BTW – this hope that Reid will suddenly change a philosophy that has been ingrained for 13 yrs, is akin to the “this is the year Vick will change” you and others hope for as ardently. How’s it going with the whole leopard and spots thing?

To look fot the Eagles’, under Reid, to “pound the flippin ball” is inviting disappointment and frustration.

Vick doesn’t need to change, shit I dont want him to change….Vick just needs to limit the turnovers, its as simple as that..(But not only Vick, the entire offense needs to do a better job taking care of the ball)

Come on realtalk…. those Avant fumbles went in the books as Vick int’s… that means its Vicks fault. The stats dont lie!! i hope you catch my sarcasm.

Silly Vinnie wants blame the fall on Vick and Vick alone. and THATS where i step in time and time again to remind him whos king.

How many drops did Djax have? Remember how he didnt really try?
Remember that fumble at the end of 1 game by JMak that ended it?
Remember those 2 fumbles by Avant that went down as int’s?
Remember how the 49ers ran right back into that game?
Remember when they put a rook safety on one of the top 3 wr’s in the game?

ALL of this was the demise of the 2011 Eagles. Not a short qb who has not lived up to his rookie hype from 10 years ago.. he takes some blame but not all of it.

all of that is in the past, its a new year! Since you are orally fixated on this qb (meaning you cant talk about anything else)…. i will simply say this…… Does this qb have more talent and ability than some of the qb’s who have won superbowls? The answer is YES. so….. move on.

honestly they need to leave vick and foles alone.. they should have never tinkered with vick .. they arent quarterback gurus .. they never done shit kolb isnt shit kafka isnt shit.. feeley isnt shit .. vince young wasnt shit.. they need to leave quartberbacks mechanics alone.. and stop being so sweet.. if you want to be a nice jolly head coach .. you wont even win a super bowl .. loook at bilicheck, coughlin, tomlin , those mutha f ers are mean..
