Is Foles’ Time Near, Or Will Michael Vick Save The 2012 Season?

Wow, the Eagles actually came out of Cleveland with a win against the Browns. That’s what we all expected. Now, how they did it is far from what any of us visualized. Starting quarterback Michael Vick was horrible, as he said himself. Coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg called a pretty poor game (at least in the second half), and the offensive line hardly blocked anybody. Did I cover everything?

I wrote last week that Michael could give way to backup quarterback Nick Foles, an article not received very well to say the least. I said that in part because I believe in Foles ability but mainly “if” Vick were to miss time because of injury, Foles would be more than capable. But after watching Sunday’s game Mr. Vick needs to get his “Boogaloo Situation” together. A Boogaloo Situation is his act, his swag…get his caliber of play up to about 100 million dollars!

I’m one of the biggest MV7 fans on the planet but I’m an Eagles fan first. Real fans in Philadelphia do not accept mediocrity and that’s what he was against a subpar Browns team. I realize he only had something like 12 plays in the pre-season and he’s quite rusty. That’s where the coaching staff comes in. I’m not going to harp on four interceptions, so Andy and Marty should have him handing off to LeSean McCoy. Vick had little time to look downfield and was constantly in duress, side stepping and hurrying out of the pocket. And on many big plays, usually a big run by McCoy, what was the call? Holding!

This Sunday the Eagles won’t be playing a team on the same level as the Browns. They open up at home against a much more talented and better coached team that was one controversial call (and missed field goal) from last year’s Super Bowl. Yes, the Ravens are coming and they’re going to bring it!

Ray Lewis, future hall of fame middle linebacker doesn’t “seem” to be the maniac he once was but he’s still leading this team in tackles. I did notice however that Lewis was dragged for a few extra yards on some plays Monday Night, so although the Ravens humiliated the Bengals, Cincinnati was still able to run the ball…hint, hint Andy. The Bengals rushed for 127 yards and over 5 yards per carry! Mike Vick doesn’t have to do it all by himself! Help him out!

Baltimore’s defense put good pressure on Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton, especially in the latter stages of the game. How good, or bad that unit up front for the Eagles is will be determined Sunday afternoon at The Linc! Vick will have to be sharp and make good reads and fast, proper decisions while getting the ball out quickly against an aggressive Baltimore defense.

This Cleveland game, if you believe in omens, could present a good one. Vick took off on a scramble to get about ten yards for a first down. He was hit one yard short, knowing he was going to take a shot he put his head down and braced himself for a vicious hit, losing the ball. Somehow he came up with his own fumble, got the first down and was able to finish the drive with the winning touchdown. Last year that ball would have bounced in another direction.

Will the ball continue to bounce in the Eagles favor? Will MV7 get his Boogaloo Situation together or will we get an early glimpse of the future? Do you think it would help or even be reasonable to bench Mike Vick if he continues to struggle ala Donovan McNabb verses these same Ravens? We know that the rest of the team is behind Vick and that is very significant but if he doesn’t progress with each game as I expect he should, call him what you want… number nine might get his chance a lot sooner than any of us truly expected. I’ll say it again… Rookie quarterbacks have flourished in the NFL…but I’m not ready to hang up my #7 jersey just yet.

Things that make you go “Hmmm”: With the hip flexor injury to Wide Receiver Jeremy Maclin, do the Eagles call up Marvin McNutt from the Practice Squad or do they bring in someone, say… Plaxico Burress? Hmmm?

Anyone notice that since Mike Vick got married, he’s become a “Bum Ass” QB.. Wonder if his wife had her “Influenza Shots” when she was a baby..
Songs’ can you help out with this and check this out for us and report back…

Check out how many times the top ten running backs carried the ball Sunday
Adding the 3 plays that McCoy had called back he had 23 and add in the passes he caught
He was NOT under used
Andy ought to work the other 3 backs in for 15 or more carries

What kind of stupid title is this…

“Will Michael Vick Save the 2012 season?”

He is one thats the problem. He is the one that needs saving. The Eagles need to save themselves from him and Reid for that matter. How is he suppose to save the rest of the team when he is a major weak link? The rest of the team for the most part looks like they do not need saving this season…there is a lot of talent on this team on both sides of the ball…can you imagine if we would have gotten Manning in FA? There would actually be hope.

Its sad man. I said all I want is Ws. Sure we got one against the 2nd worst team in the league (MIA). However in reality, No way Vick is good enough to bring us the Ws it would take to win a Super Bowl tho. You simply don’t win superbowls with QBs who have made it clear they are too dumb to read a NFL blitz. Match that with inaccuracy and him being injury prone. Just doesn’t happen. And all his ass kissers out there are flat out embarrassing. just as dumb. You must be a Vick fan more than an Eagles fan…im sure when Vick is gone we won’t here from you again on an Eagles sports website.

What a damn shame to have all this talent and potential yet have dumb and dumber as our QB and Head Coach.
The jury is still out on who the dumber one is but i think its clear they are both as dumb as they come on NFL sundays

rcp i agree he had 29 touches in all i believe. i thought andy should have spelled him for the kids but maybe he was nervous about ball security and he felt that vick was better suited for security than a rook– 10 year veteran vs. a rook… ooops!
i thought shady was used well– they also ran the most plays sunday of any team in the league so numbers are skewed a bit.

RCP, you may be right. However, we might not know what the other situations were those games..were the teams winning like we were for the most part? Did they actually have a top 10 QB who wasn’t throwing picks or fumbling every series..Were they playing a team that was terrible against the run yet solid against the pass like we were?

Reids logic baffles the shit out of me on NFL sundays. Sure he is capable of putting a solid roster together but my god does he suck on game days..I feel like he watches the Packers, Pats, Saints games too much…fact is our Qb is nothing compared to those ones, not even close. Because of what we have as QB, we should only pass 20-25 times a game at most.

Im sick of hearing this is a passing league etc..Sure it is if you have an elite QB. However, the two best teams in the league to me (49ers and Ravens) don’t and they get it done by running the ball and playing D. IF it wasn’t for some ridiculous football luck they would have been the ones in the Super Bowl last year..After watching the 49ers whoop the Packers AT HOME, makes you wonder what type of league this really is.

I would run 40 times a game if I was the Birds…20-25 touches for McCoy and some for Brown and Lewis.

has he sucked during all those freaking wins? i think if you watched any other team the way you watch the birds…that is with your HEART– you would see other coaches baffle you just as much.

guys crack me gthe hell up – so your theory is we paid 100 million for a QB we can’t trust to throw? We have a franchise QB and we would rather have the rookie have the ball then have our 100 mill QB throwing to Maclin, Djax, Celek and Harbor and Avant? McCoy got about 30 touches and provided over 100 yards on the ground……… when we needed the run, we had it, and they used it. But again, if we need to treat Vick like a rookie – then hell, put the rookie in there. Hell, put Trent Edwards in there – he looked great in Pre season..

now, to further comment on the 56 passes, if Vivk missed pre-season, wouldn’t we want him to get as many live reps as possible? Wouldn’t we want him to knock the rust off as qucikly as he could?

no lets sit around and bitch Reid should have given shady the ball 50 times, or the rookies should carry – bottom line is the team MOVED the football – so quit bitching about the play calling, the problem was Vick was making horrid decisions and terrible throws and STARING at his intended recvr – and he can not read a blitz to save his ass

Baltimore is going to be a great game, both teams are 1 and 0 and Vick needs to be ready,

I am soooo tired of people talking, saying Vick is injury prone…you’ve gotta be kidding me…Vick got hit 16 times on Sunday and got up everyone…What QB in the league can take that type of beating day in and day out without injury…C’mon, son
Also again did you watch the game? I also wanted to get into Reid and the play calling but the 1st half wasn’t that bad…the problem was the penalties in that first half especially, McCoy had a nice gain that was called back for holding, I think there were two of those in the 1st half…This game is bigger than one person, myself having played the sport, understand this…

and honestly I feel as though on this site I am surrounding by a bunch of Skip Baylesses!

I originally predicted that Foles would take over full time in week 12, but I’ve upped that to week 8 (after the bye).

However, another performance like we just witnessed might move that timetable up even closer. If Vick has another “do my best to give the ball to the other team” effort (I think highly likely), then the pressure to put FOles in will be pretty insurmountable.

I am kicking it in jury duty today gents so keep the comments rolling!

Vick is going to have a bounceback game this week – the coaches will have a plan to counter those blitzes off the edge – and McCoy is gonna ruch for a buck fifty!

RT – the penalties were a killer int he first half – no doubt – that pick PI on Maclin was horsecrap, Maclin had stopped and turned – he was entitled to that spot.

as for going forward this week, I would like to see a few more WR and… oops just got called!

How about you don’t throw the ball 56 times with a QB who only had six snaps all pre season and you have three good tailbacks, having said that if Vick continues this way Big Red has to think about pulling him.

RegalEagle

September 11, 2012 5:10 pm

Maybe the 56 passes are a secret attempt by AR to have Vick get injured or lose the support of his team in order to facilitate a smooth transition to 9. Remember 10 seems enamored with 7.

Just saying.. for the smoke filled backroom crowd…

RegalEagle

If you have eyes you could see that 7 holds the ball that split second too long- always has. He admits to not being a student of the game.. He flees the pocket vs sliding in the pocket.

My eyes saw 9 make a side step and get the ball out. (YES IT WAS ONLY PRESEASON) but it was also the same preseason that was able to cause 7 to be injured 2 times in 12 snaps.

9 is a quarterback – 7 is a great athlete (aging)

Also note that the Browns have Pat Shurmer MVs old QB coach) and Dick Juron on staff now. (this I stole another site)

They knew precisely how to obliterrate Vick – and they did.

You don’t think the word is not now out on the street?

I said id way throug 2010 that wha we were watching was a mirage and that as soon as there was il MV would deteriorate because he never leaned to be a QB (despite all theBS – he could be as good as Steve Young – that was out there)

The film is out. The blueprint is drawn. There is no QB hiding behind the curtain that is the Mke Vick Myth.

Irrespective of the fact that Vick had a piss poor performance. Reid and company did the smart thing late in the game with a combination of a heavy running attack and Vick in the shotgun to deal with the lack of blitz pick-up/pass rush. It wouldn’t surprise me a bit if Vick goes out and has a Redskins 2010 type game on Sunday…the dude is due for an insane game. (If you forgot he has a jersey in the HOF for that one)

Having said all of that I’ve expressed since the beginning of the summer two developmental QBs behind Vick is luxury the Eagles can ill afford. Trent Edwards is an idea they can pick-up later, besides if they think they’re going to get another team’s second round pick for a developmental back-up QB somewhere down the line that’s probably not going to happen again since they’ve gone to that well to many times and burned too many suitors. They need McNabb for for insurance this year.

Just to reiew Butch’s plan:

1 – Vick will have a great game because he had a great game 2 seasons ago and is “due”.

2 – If Vick doesn’t work out, we need to bring in a once great, (but no longer) teiionnalyst who hasn’t had a good season since 2009, hasn’t played in a year and a half.

Did I get that?

Sounds like a grat plan.

Why does Foles scare the pro Vick camp so much?

I have been calling for a new QB since McNabb (who proved to be done after leaving here) Kolb looked interesting but as most pointed out did not have a big enough arm.

By the way Kolb and Vick had similar QB ratings last year.
Kafka was worse than Kolb.
Vince Young was Intriguing for a minute as he is big but also seemingly dum as a box of rocks.

Foles should get his chance this NOW. if he turns out to be a bum our record will suck and we can draft another QB in 1st round next year.

Vick will win us just enough to not be able to easily replace him, and if we go to foles next year and it desnt work out we are even further behind.

Remember 10,18,25,87 only have so many miles on the tires before they must be replaced (espescially 25) Lets not waste them anymore than needed.

The problem is the offense isnt based around mike vick.. when vick was ultra successful in 2010 the offense was totally different.. In 2010 vick woudl drop back much further like all the short quarterbacks do so the can see. the would roll him out and have designed runs.. Now they want him to stay in the pocket and get killed.. The eagles are morons.. Just let vick play his game and have foles come in when he gets nicked up or misses a game or 2.. Also, The line was horrid .. I want the old mike vick back …

It isn’t actualy # of ints that prove/disprove his propensity to throw picks. Its int %.

He doesn’t throw a lot of actual ints because he doesn’t throw a lot. He always ranks near the bottom of the league in atts due to either being hurt a lot, or taking off and running 100x a year.

His interception percentage is always high however. Coming in at 3.3% average.

Add in his average of 10 fumbles a year – due to his scrambling – and you have a turnover machine.

From Football Outsiders on Vick this week:

By now you know about his interceptions, but what you might not know is just how impotent Vick was for long stretches of this game. He had a string of 16 dropbacks over the first and second quarters where he failed to pick up a single first down, and only had one successful play. His numbers over that stretch: 6-of-15 for 38 yards and a sack.

This has been going on since the miraculous win vs. the giants ….go to his stats and look for the last 20 games or so and more importantly look at his wins/losses– his body of work suggest that he won’t take us to the promised land.
