Eagles head coach Andy Reid knew what he was doing on Monday morning when he put that huge question mark in the middle of his answer to the question regarding Michael Vick and the Eagles quarterback situation.
“Right now, we’re with Michael and that’s what we’re doing,” Reid said. “We’ll evaluate it as we go.”
Reid has been around too long to say something that he didn’t mean to say. He was sending a message to Vick. Eliminate the turnovers or I’m going to be forced to pull you from the lineup.
He softened his answer when he went on 94WIP on Monday night. but he hadn’t really changed his tune.
“It was the last question. I was finishing up the press conference,” Reid said. “Michael’s our quarterback. Period. Michael’s our quarterback. Listen, does he need to get better? Do we all need to get better? Yes. We’re all going to do that.”
This was a bit of encouragement. Reid was saying I still believe in you, but he still made that first statement on purpose to get Vick’s attention and let him know that the clock was ticking. The Eagles can’t continue to play Vick, if he continues to turn the football over at this rate. There’s no way he can keep putting the ball in his hands, if he’s turning the ball over three times a game. You can’t win in the NFL, if you turn the football over that often.
Reid knows that and Vick knows that. Sunday night’s game is very important for Reid, but it’s even more important for Vick. If he starts turning the ball over, it will put pressure on Reid to make a decision.
Every time the offense comes to the sideline after a Vick turnover, Reid will be forced to make a decision about the quarterback position.
