I’ve heard of running backs solving their fumbling problem by carrying a football around with them everywhere they go. It seems that Eagles quarterback Michael Vick is trying this method, so he’s been carrying a football around the Nova Care facility for the past week.
The left handed signal caller has been carrying it in the meeting room, in the locker room, in the training room and even taking it home as well.
“Breakfast, to the meetings, lunch. Everyone thought it was funny, but I didn’t,” he said. “That’s how much I care about this team and that’s how much I care about our success and winning on Sundays. I’m going to do everything I can to make sure that I take care of my responsibilities.”
I don’t know if it’s really a great solution, but it can’t hurt. Vick has to make sure to cover up the two point of the football on each carry. The Birds quarterback must discontinue the practice of carrying the ball loosely in his left hand. He must tuck it like a running back by having one point of the football in his hand and the other point of the football tucked in between his elbow and arm pit, up against his body.
Everybody has been harping on him turning the ball over, so he’s going to be thinking about it during the game. Yes he needs to protect the football, but he can’t let it dominate his thinking to the point where he’s not able to play the game effectively. Vick has corrected being too careless with the football as a passer, now he needs to be more careful with the football as a ball carrier.
“I don’t think it’ll be a concern once the game starts”, Vick said. “The thing you don’t want to do is to go out and worry about things that can happen,” he said. “You want to go out there and make it happen – just being in the moment and taking care of the football and doing the right things for my team is what’s important. That’s what I’m going to try and do.”
