That was a crushing loss for the Philadelphia Eagles and there’s plenty of blame to go around. I don’t know what Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg were thinking all day by trying to throw deep against a defensive line which they couldn’t block.
They obviously didn’t have very much respect for the Lions defensive line, like they had for the Baltimore Ravens defensive front and the New York Giants defensive front. In the Baltimore and New York games, the Birds offense had a passing game plan which featured short passes, which allowed Michael Vick to get the ball out of his hands.
They came out today and tried to throw the ball deep against the Lions and had very little success. On the second play of the game, the Eagles were caught attempting the reverse against a team which they know loves to run its defensive ends upfield.
This game was vintage Michael Vick because he made some great plays and great throws, but he also turned the football over two times with a couple of costly interceptions. He made some decisions which had to make you just shake your head. The first interception was a terrible decision.
On the last drive for the Eagles, which took place at the start of overtime . They foolishly started the drive with a seven-step drop. Vick was pressured and sacked for a big loss. On the next play, he was sacked again before throwing the ball away from the end zone on third down. It cost the Birds the game.
There’s no excuse for trying to throw the ball deep against a defensive line which had already shown us the first half that the Birds offensive line couldn’t block them.
This one will really hurt because they’ll have to sit and think about it for two weeks. Andy Reid and his staff are going to get shredded during these two weeks. Michael Vick will be called on the carpet for turning the ball over a league-leading 13 times in six games. This is going to be a painful two weeks for this Eagles team.
Has anybody seen the Eagles pass rush?
The Birds front four hasn’t been getting it done. They didn’t pressure on Matthew Stafford today when they needed to do it. Andy Reid brought Jim Washburn in here to have a pass rush which would pressure quarterbacks and not allow them to lead comeback wins. That’s two weeks a row in which we’ve seen teams come back and beat the Eagles with big plays in the passing game
Again has anybody seen the Eagles pass rush?
