Notes From The Phillies’ 5-0 Loss To St. Louis

ughjrollThe Philadelphia Phillies lost the third game of their series with the Cardinals, falling 5-0 in Philadelphia. Their record now stands at 7-11.

  • It was a rough night for starter Cliff Lee. Lee has been the team’s best pitcher in the first month of the season, but was off of his game tonight, allowing five runs on seven hits, striking out five and walking three. The lefty allowed four of his runs in the third inning, walking the bases loaded before allowing three straight singles.
  • After exploding for eight runs on Friday night, the offense wasn’t interested in providing any kind of support for their struggling starter. The lineup generated only three hits the entire night, and never challenged starter Laynce Lynn.
  • Michael Young, Erik Kratz, and John Mayberry were the only starters that managed hits.
  • Domonic Brown did manage to work two walks, but grounded into a double-play on one pitch to end the game. His average has dropped to .218.
  • Ryan Howard missed his second straight game with a groin injury.
  • The top of the order (Jimmy Rollins, Freddy Galvis, Chase Utley, Michael Young) went a combined 1-15 with a walk.
  • The best news from this game was that the bullpen was able to stop the bleeding. Phillippe Aumont, Jeremy Horst, and recently called up Joe Savery combined for four shutout innings to finish the game.

Final Thoughts

Another frustrating game to watch.

One night after one of their best offensive performances of the season, the bats go MIA against another average pitcher. It’s going to be hard for the Phillies to go anywhere with a lineup as wildly inconsistent as this one.

For the time being, Charlie Manuel can only continue to play the hands that he’s been dealt until Carlos Ruiz and Delmon Young return. And even the return of those two hitters likely won’t be enough to solve the larger problems surrounding the batting order.

How many more for Booben the imbecile? That’s the countdown, that I’m more looking forward to. Manuel is a lame duck, & clearly his team knows it, & is showing it by their play. This is the biggest bunch, of overrated, overpaid, lifeless, boring, undisciplined, bunch of mutts & has-beens, that I’ve seen, in a very long time!! Nothing surprising, or Earth shattering to me, I saw this coming 3 years ago, & stated so. It’s ashame the Silver spoon fed, wannabe, Golden boy, was too inept & unequipped, to see the same!

would love to see sandburg as manager but this isnt manuels fault ! piss poor decisions , no depth , and age have really hurt this team . i’m not giving up yet but this time if they are not in the hunt , they need to become major sellers

Exactly Nev856, this team is just not what it use to be and it’s time to start selling. We had our run it was nice but we need to start getting younger. And honestly it’s not the pitching for me I believe you can win with them. It’s the lineup I don’t like. If you take our pitching and match it with the braves lineup man that would be mean.

pd, even when they inevitably do sell, do you have any confidence, that our retarded GM, will be able to get quality returns?!? This is, the same Circus @$$clown, that put together these bunch of overpaid failures! He took a WS Champion, & managed to regress it, each & every year, all the while, having an open checkbook! Dude, must GO!!!!

Charlie will not be fired, and I agree with dcar, it’s not the manager as much as it is the architect of this team, Ed wade did a lot more with a lot less money, they both will be gone at the end of this season, Ruben gets promoted as per the Peter principle

I don’t think it’s Nanuel’s fault either, but it’s time for him to go..
Amaro will thru the 2014 Season so another 1 1/2 Seasons with him
At least..
I was thinking will the Phils behind the BiG 3 of Hamels, Doc & Lee
Ever Win 3 Straight Ball Ganes behind these Guys..
It doesn’t appear so..

don’t worry about that, Amaro has Delmon Young and Carlos Ruis coming — and the outstanding coaching be done from the 3rd base coach will inspire a playoff push —

Wait to you see Delmon Young attempt to play the OF,
Quite possibly the worst OF in the Major Leauges, I’m serious,
This man has no business picking up a Glove and belongs in the AL
As a DH, occasional 1B.. See how many Balls he misplays, can’t get to and plays at Warning track as balls land 10 feet in front of him all game long
A bad fit for any NL Team..

Utley ran away from the ball yesterday when it was hit to him, did anyone find out why? did the new infield coach and future manager teach him that?

Charlie is not blameless here. He is the manager and is supposed to be a batting guru. The fact that Jimmy Rollins is still the free swinging undisciplined hitter that pops out more than anybody in the league is a failure by Charlie. The fact that Ryan Howard was a .313 hitter early in his career and is now a .250-.270 hitter that struggles mightily with lefties is a failure by Charlie. The fact that the team can go multiple games without drawing a walk is a failure by Charlie.

I like Charlie, he will always have my adoration for 2008.

But I would fire him to send a message. This season is going to slip away quickly if the ship isn’t righted. I don’t think Charlie can do it anymore.

I agree 100% E-Money,
Charlie Manuel will be fired within the next 5 Days (at the end of this
Homestand as I predicted last week) they need to light a fire under this Roster and now.. Ryne Sandberg will make some changes as Manager

paul, you couldn’t light a fire under these turds, with napalm! Don’t kid yourself! Listen, I want the entire FO & coaching staff gone, & most of the roster, but firing a lame duck coach, ain’t going to change what they are. A bunch of lifeless, undisciplined, declined in skill, overpaid, overrated, bunch of band-aids & has-beens! PERIOD!

Yes I agree Dcar, but you can’t replace the Core of the Team all at one time..
So instead , you fire the Coach with hope that some Players snap out of it and put everyone on Notice… Will it work, doubtful, but to do nothing and watch this Te simply due on the vine is no good either..

charlie isnt getting fired in 5 days guy get real and everyone is pretty much playing like they are supposed to right now… bottom line is they arent good enough and our gm gave us a AAA outfield and an average AAA outfield. Cant play +500 ball with a minor league outfield, it just doesnt work that way
