On Day Two, Eagles Select Zach Ertz And Bennie Logan

ertz

The NFL Draft continued on Friday evening, with the second and third rounds taking place. The Eagles owned the third overall pick in the second round, and the fifth pick of the third.

With their second-round pick, the Eagles selected tight end Zach Ertz from Stanford. Ertz was considered a first-round talent by some, and head coach Chip Kelly described him as “a matchup nightmare.” The Stanford product will have a chance to play a critical role in the Eagles’ offense, and could potentially give the Eagles a powerful one-two punch at the tight end position with Brent Celek.

In the third round, the Eagles selected defensive tackle Bennie Logan from LSU. Logan is still a little raw, but could develop into a better player. He could become the Eagles’ starting nose tackle in a year, but for now he’ll join the mix on the defensive line.

I’m loving all these picks so far, but wish they would have swooped in and drafted Tyrann Mathieu.. This definitely feels like a new era in Philadelphia, they have yet to make any trades, they seem to have adopted the same draft strategy as the Steelers, Packers, Ravens etc etc who stay put, trust their board, and draft the best possible player.. I like the approach..

There is a Tight End out of University of Washington coming out next year that’s light years better than any TE in this draft. Thats the TE, that should be drafted by the Eagles…….

If he played that well when he was high, imagine what he’ll do focused and sober, this kid is a football player and he already lives with Peterson so no gamble at all by Arizona. I remember teams passed on Sapp because of weed and he wound up in the HOF. Nothing over hyped about what this kid can do on the football field.

Worship me plebes.

I just came home from being out this evening….to see Ertz to the Eagles…

I was not surprised. I expected the pick.

I have been telling all of you for 3 months the Birds would be taking either Ertz or Eifert (whoever was available) with the second pick.

Of course everyone here told me I was off my rocker. Everyone said there was no way the Birds would take a TE in this spot. I remained adamant. Because I knew.

Bow down.

I just got word that Tyrann Mathieu will play Free Safety for the Cardinals.. I recall Fraudman saying he would be a cornerback haha why would any team put him at corner when he is a ball hawk and can be utilized better as a FS. Wish the Birds would have selected him in the 3rd but im happy with the Logan pick, going SEC on the defensive side of the ball..

Per reports out there Cliff, there was little to no interest in QB Foles
So no Trade and as I have stated many times before, I did not want the Eagles to trade him for I believe he is the best QB on this Eagles Roster
When nothing happened in the first Round with the Jets, I knew there was not going to be any deals out there.. I did think that Tampa Bay could be a player, but they went after another similar style QB in Mike Glennon with their 3rd Pick..
I believe it will be Foles, Vick & Dixon as Eagles QB on Roster with Kinnie on the Practice squad..

I told everyone on this site, they won’t run a 100% read option offense, but more like New England, – which is just like what he ran at New Hampshire, not Oregon – although you may see some facets of Oregon’s Offense, but not much, because it won’t work in the pros.

This draft has the makings, of being a worse draft than 2008-2011! All 3 reaches, all 3 picks underwhelming, all 3 taken with many better players & needs there! All that verbal diarrhea, that Weaselman spewed, about taking the best players available, were bold faced LIES! None of the 3, were best players available! We drafted a project, reach, RT at #4, a TE that we really didn’t need (why even sign Casey then), & Login was drafted ahead of 5-7 D-lineman better. Kelly says, he’s going to play him at NT. He’s too f^#@ing small, at 6’2″ 310 lbs. to play him at NT & he has NO pass rush ability, to play 5 technique DE! What are we going to do about Corner, Safety, OLB & ILB, all of the good ones are gone. All that’s left, are situational pass rushers, which we DO NOT NEED! They better get Rambo, Phillip Thomas, Jesse Williams, or Barrett Jones, or this draft is a waste. I still can’t believe, we passed on Star in the 1st, Damontre Moore/ Jonathan Hankins in the 2nd, & Brandon Williams/ Jonathan Jenkins in the 3rd, when we had the chance! No doubt in my mind, Weaselman & Kelly will fail! Entire off season, has been very disappointing & very underwhelming, to say the least! Johnson & Ertz, are probably going to be fine in the long run, but we again, have ignored adding high quality playmakers, on the defensive side of the ball, especially the secondary! For the record, Logan sucks, & will be nothing more than a Patterson/ Bunkley/ Laws type, mediocre D-lineman! We needed playmakers & beasts, on the defensive side of the ball, & got neither, in the draft, nor FA! I’m very disappointing! All my excitement is gone! No trades, foolish reaches! All this tells me, is what I’ve said all along, is Weaselman had his hand in all those other drafts & FA signings, not the Hindenburg!
With the 1st pick, in the 2014 draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select………?

Frank, where is the pass rush you believe in? You ain’t getting that from Logan! He has ZERO pass rush capabilities! Yeah, the pass rush really did us great over the last 3 years! Our Secondary is our main defensive weakness, & now that we went to a 3-4, we don’t have a NT, we don’t have a 5 technique DE, & we don’t have a 3-4 Cover OLB. We have nothing but spare parts, cast offs, band-aids, rotational players! We have ZERO defensive playmakers & HUGE ????’s So far, this entire off-season, has been a colossal flop. The TE will clearly be a key component of Kelly’s NFL offense. He explained how he plans to use all three at once.

“Yeah. You go like that (holds three fingers in the air) and three tight ends go in the game. We are going to go three tight ends in a game. Now, if they go three linebackers, we spread them out and if they go DB’s, we smash you. So, pick your poison.”

They are not going to line up in a 3 TE set next to each other.. What he’s saying its about creating mismatches. Have Celek lines up as a traditional TE, next to the tackle. Line Ertz up in the slot or split out wide. Casey lines up at H back who can split out wide.. When they catch a team in a heavy package, wether it be with the linebackers ( you pass). If you catch them in a dime, those 3 will go back to nxt to the tackles and Casey back to the FB spot.

DCar let Chip fail before you declare him a failure. As long as this team does not shift into a pro set and run a shuffle pass on the goal line it is a step in the right direction.

Everybody questioned why this rookie coach Jim Harbaugh drafted Colin Kaepernick last year and how did that work out a year later and oh yeah at the time they reached in the draft for Aldon Smith?

A lot of questions were asked about what the hell Pete Carroll was doing over in Seattle with several moves and how are they looking now?

There is no 1 year fix with this team so let it play out and see.

The only fact of the matter is in the 39 years you have been watching football you have never coached an NFL team so like most of us you have no idea what Chip and his coaches are planning to do until you see it on the field in a game that counts.

Hopefully this coaching staff has a 2 – 3 year plan to build a solid team long term.

Nobody is turning this team around this year!

Points, points, points
keep drafting Offensive players.
the Eagles were so boring last year ( 17 points a game).
Lane Johnson was a need pick, which means Chip either hates Herremans or Jason Peters is not looking good.
Brett Celek had a really really bad year and Zack Ertz prevented Oregon from playing in the NCAA Championship game (12-1 record) I get that pick.
Jeff Stoutland had to block all these SEC DLinemen and must of given the thumbs up on Bennie Logan.

these picks are not impressive especially when you consider what was on the board or where they could have drafted them, and what we need on this team. I hope Kelly can get more out of the players we already have that’s why he feels comfortable drafting this way. Lane Johnson has the chance to be a good player maybe even a pro bowler year 3 but that is wishful thinking. At 4 you want sure things he is not in the same class as Fisher or Joekle and was a late bloomer on the coattails of the hype surrounding the other 2. Another combine star that we hope can play as well in pads as he does in tights. Why not trade down add an additional 2nd or 3rd round pick and grab a kyle long or a Star or even a Millner. I like Ertz as a player but he is a luxury pick especially when you didn’t draft a defensive player in rd 1 and signed a TE in FA. Logan? like just jump all the way down the draft board and select the 8th or 9nth best DT out there. why? oh I guess he really loves football. smh I thought they liked bigger people so they can beat up the little people. Hunt is a 6-8 behemoth that can contribute on special teams too why not take him? I want to be wrong so bad but this looks like more of the same old eagles outsmarting themselves

It’s blatantly clear through this years draft, and last years that Andy Reid has set this franchise back so many years with his lousy drafting. We have just about zero drafted studs on defense to move forward with for the future. We have to rebuild the o-line we had to quick fix the secondary. We have so many holes on this team left by that piece of shit Reid it’s insane. Now there are some pieces left over from the Reid regime that Chip can work with, but I don’t think it’s as many as people think. Bottom line it’s going to take several drafts, and off-season’s to build this team up to where Chip can really have the roster he envisions.

Matt Barkley is more likely to be like Brady than St Nick. He will run the NE offense.

Barkley will be Foles backup next year. This year he holds the clip for Dennis Dixon, if Dixon isn’t placed on practice squad….

I told you’ll Foles isn’t going anywhere.

Okay diddy bye bye somebody, unless like Vinnie says they plan on playing 4 QB’s a year. This is how it shakes out Vick starts until he’s injured then Barkley takes over after the injury or at the end of Vick’s contract. Where does that leave Foles? I really don’t like Barkley not one bit, I actually prefer Foles then this clown another entitled QB failure from USC.

Matt Barkley???????? BWHAHAHAHA!!!! I feel like I’m in the Twilight zone! Who is running things down there, a dart thrower? I guess they don’t secondary help? Deal God, almighty. Good bye Vick, not Foles!

Barkley carries the same skill set as Brady. Not saying he is but I just think he can do the same things as Brady from the head down.

I would release Vick now and start it RIGHT now with Barkley.

Barkley isn’t ready to be a starter in this league. You’re overstating his skill set. He doesn’t even have a strong arm….There is a reason he was still available in the 4th Round Dag….

He wouldn’t be ready to even compete for a starting position for at least 3 years if he progressed, and he is not a better QB than Foles…..

No problem with Foles as backup.

Zach Ertz was a 2nd luxury pick, considering that position is already 3 to 4 players deep it just doesn’t make a lot of sense. For a team that’s not “loaded” the pick makes me cringe a bit when thinking about the long term effectiveness of the front office and how they may not be good about impulse control. I would have felt better if they’d grabbed a ball hawk of a safety like Phillip Thomas, but there’s still time (hopefully.) On top of that I’m not thrilled with the Lane Johnson pick because of issues I mentioned…if he’s a steroid monster (very likely) he could lose that 100 lbs. as fast as he picked it up if random drug tests start popping up his way.

I like the Bennie Logan pick though.

I think Foles gets traded for a 4th Round pick in the next 45 minutes
Or so.. Vikings, Chiefs, Chargers,Seahawks as a Back-up

As a backup? WTF. Ive been told by all the geniuses he is a starter. Ohhhh I get it just on the Eagles. I have been told how much praise Kelly gave that stiff when he played against him.lol. Foles sucks that’s why Kelly just drafted another QB period.

I think it has more to do with depth, and Value than Foles ability.

To hear some tell it, Foles was supposed to be traded by now. They’re wrong too

perhaps….but…..

The harsh (for some) reality is the Eagles will not carry 5 QBs into the season.

3 on the roster and 1 on the Squad. Max. The only one going to the squad is the kid no one can name.

Foles, Barkley, Dixon or Vick aren’t going to be placed on the squad. (certainly not Foles or Barkley who would both be signed of it in an instant…they could perhaps put Dixon there as he’s been there before and no one wanted him….)

But lets say that neither of those 4 are going to the practice squad….well they’re not all being carried into the season….so….

one of those 4 is gone.

The Birds aren’t going to drop either of the 2 recent draft picks…so that leaves either Vick or Dixon to go.

My $$ is on Vick.

Someone has to go.

It’s pretty obvious the Eagles used Free-Agency to upgraded the Defense and that Eagles are using this Draft to upgrade or get Chip Kelly Type of Players
It’s a new era of Eagle Football for sure, gone are going to be these 40-50 yard pass routes by D-Jax and Maclin in fact, I think Maclin, Cooper and Avant are the odd players out in this up-tempo style we will see with heavy use of TE’s
Which I am fine with..

May start seeing some players who are no longer fits traded for 2014 Draft Picks to Teams who were unable to address their needs
Players like Maclin,Avant, Cooper, Celek, Cole, Watkins, Bryce Brown
Could all be moved/packaged for future picks..

Maclin is not tough enough and simply shy’s away from Contact which the biggest reason he will never be a complete WR in my opinion

Completely agree for the time being. Could chance with the change in atmosphere. He really thrived in the spread offense in college. Does need to get tougher, like you mentioned.

Eagles just drafted a DE who has a rating of 1.0 from sports ill….but he’s 6′ 7″ 280 lbs.

Still rolling with that “bigger people” theme I guess.
