ThePhiladelphia Phillies lost their third straight game on Friday night, falling to the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2. Their record drops to 16-21.
- Tyler Cloyd had a strong showing in his 2013 debut, allowing two runs over 6.1 innings. Cloyd allowed just two base hits, although he did issue three walks.
- The problem, once again, was the offense. After scoring two quick runs in the first inning, the lineup was unable to generate anymore production.
- Jimmy Rollins led off the game with a solo homer, his second of the year, and finished the game 2-4.
- Domonic Brown had an RBI single in the first inning.
- The Phillies had an opportunity to tie the game in the ninth inning, but couldn’t get the job done. With runners at second and third with one out, Laynce Nix popped up and Rollins grounded out to end the ballgame.
- Antonio Bastardo was the first to relieve Cloyd and allowed an inherited runner to score to tie the game.
- Mike Adams gave up the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, and took his third loss of the season.
Final Thoughts
This offense is just miserable.
Ian Kennedy hasn’t been having a great year, and he was hittable tonight, allowing base hits and issuing walks to the Phillies in the early innings. However, these feeble bats just couldn’t make him pay.
Even though the bullpen allowed two runs to score late in the game, I put this loss on the shoulders of the hitters before I put it on Bastardo and Adams. It’s very difficult to expect any pitching staff to have success when your batting order can just barely put together two runs.
The offense wasted another gem from a starting pitcher, and the team has now fallen to five games below .500.
absolutely pathetic. rollins and howard are flat out dead batters most of the time. i wish we could find a way to move on from these 2
