Notes From The Phillies’ 5-1 Loss To Miami

anotherlossThe Philadelphia Phillies lost the first game of their series with Miami, falling 5-1 to the Marlins. Their record drops to 21-23.

  • It was yet another wasted effort for starter Cole Hamels, who took his seventh loss of the year. Hamels allowed just two runs over six innings, and struck out a season-high 10 batters. However the lefty once again fell victim to a lack of run support.
  • The lone run that the Phillies generated came off of a solo home run by Domonic Brown in the third inning. It was the eighth bomb of the year for Brown, who finished the game 2-4.
  • Chase Utley hit cleanup again for the absent Ryan Howard. Utley went 0-2 with a walk, and was caught stealing in the eighth inning with two outs.
  • Ben Revere got another start in centerfield, but went 0-4.
  • Michael Young shifted over to first base, and went 2-4.
  • Freddy Galvis took over at third base, and went 0-3 with a walk. Galvis also committed his first fielding error of the season.
  • Justin De Fratus tossed a scoreless seventh inning for Hamels. He allowed one base runner in the eighth inning, and was lifted in favor of Jeremy Horst.
  • The Phillies put Phillippe Aumont into a tight game for the first time in awhile. He responded by giving up three singles, allowing three runs (one inherited) to score.

Final Thoughts

Cole Hamels has always been a victim of poor run support throughout his career, but the way this season has been going for him is just ridiculous.

Right now, Hamels is walking down the same path that Cliff Lee was on a year ago. He’s pitching well, but the offense just flat out isn’t interested in generating any kind of offense for him. It’s just unreal that the team has just one victory when their top pitcher has taken the mound this year.

What’s even more incredible is that Hamels has now lost the Miami Marlins three times already. That’s just unbelievable. These are games that the team just can’t afford to lose. If they want to keep up with the Braves and Nationals, they need every win that they can get. They’ve got to take advantage of their matchup against these lowly teams like Miami and bolster their record.

It was also disappointing to see Phillippe Aumont implode once again. The team really needs another arm to step up in that bullpen, and Charlie Manuel gave the rookie a chance to prove himself in a tight spot tonight, and Aumont just looked awful as he put the game out of reach.

And finally, to add insult to injury, the Phillies went down 1-2-3 in the ninth inning to none other than Chad Qualls.

Losses like this are excruciatingly painful.

Still no ace in Hamels, stop with this no run support bs, I remember critics calling doc out in game 5 of the nlds against the cards, when he gave up a single run in the first, the only run he surrendered, Hamels needed to shut this team out like an ace would have, stop with the excuses, he’s not an ace

jake, you make great points, the fact is, hey have only scored 20 runs, in 10 games for him. He’s this years Lee, & wat they did for him, early in his career.

It is the same as Lee last year and it’s a real embarrassment that this team has so little output again 2 years in a row AGAINST MEDIOCRE PITCHERS. This lineup makes average pitchers look like aces and then hit 2 homers off of the 100 MPH closer. Even pitchers that this team used to clobber like Bronson Arroyo now flabbergast them. Ben Revere has been such a disappointment, meanwhile Shane is playing well for Boston (.282 with 20 runs scored and 10 RBI).
Looking back to last year, you really can’t blame Hunter Pence and Shane Victorino for not being able to carry the team. This team can’t carry itself when healthy.

E-$$$, why is Revere disappointing you? What were you expecting from a 5’8″, noodle armed, slap singles hitter, with zero power, or plate discipline? Did you expect the reincarnation of Ricky Henderson, or something? He is what he is. Just think, we traded 2 young arms for him, too. Worley ain’t doing too hot, but May is pitching very well at AAA, after a slow start. Another stupid desperation move, on the part of Ruin 2morrow Jr.

The offense is horrific & I don’t want to hear the injury excuses anymore, either. They’ve sucked all year, before the injuries. Seems as though Hamels is reverting back to his petulant childish ways. He stormed out of he locker room, & didn’t speak o reporters! This team is in the tank! Trade them all, I don’t give a f^#@ anymore. They have no heart, no life to them, & no energy. The sooner upper management sees this, the sooner the rebuild can commence! Start with axing Ruin 2morrow Jr. & the Manager, have Proefrock take over the rebuild, & have Sandberg start his era. Something has to give soon. They got to stop sitting there, praying that the miraculous is going to happen. It’s F^#@ING OVER Booben! IT’S OVER!!!!!

Another wasted Pitching Percormance when Hamels takes the mound
Hamels pitched as well as he has all-season and still gets no support
This loss makes the great comeback win of Sunday’s fame a moot point
This 2013 Phillie Team is no better than a .500 Team and not a Playoff Team
There will be no long winning steaks or tears where they go 10-2 over a 2 week period as in years past.. They will go 4-3 1 week, then 3-4 the next,
Win a series, drop a series, etc, etc.. In the end, they will win
About 82 Games which will not make it for the Pist-Seasom

This is it for me.

The Phillies have screwed with Cole Hamels for years now, and the problem is in the clubhouse: I don’t know which one of the ‘core’ players has a hard on for Hamels, but now is the time to start cleaning some of this shit out.

Howard injured?…Bring up Darren Ruff, no more of this ‘left field experiment: Let him play first base…I don’t care if he makes a few gaffes in the field, he’ll win us a couple of games down the line with his hitting…Everybody knows the prolem with Howard is that he has absolutely no trade value, but what’s difference if he doesn’t hit in the lineup, or he doesn’t hit from the bench?…He still costs 15 million or whatever he gets, so let the young guy play, and at least the fans will still come to the park and have something new to look at.

At the deadline, Rollins will get us a couple of prospects…Same with Utley.

Charlie?…Time for Ryne Sandburg…I’m tired of ‘Well, baseball’s a funny game: Our guys are tryin’ hard, but, at the same time, maybe they’re tryin’ too hard and…’

Stop already.

Fookin’ Hamels, I know why he’s pissed: Because the guy is seeing his season go down the drain because he gets no support.

See, with the Phillies we’re seeing the ‘Andy Reid Syndrome’ which means complacency, when what these players need is a foot up the ass, or out the door.

Now, Chooch is hurt, too…That’s OK, because over the course of a season, Kratz will hit the same number of homers…Phils problem is STILL not working the opposing pitcher, and therefore not making contact when contact must be made…You have to look at the opposing pitcher as if he is a dog, and then work him like a dog.

Great couple of posts frank. This team is complacent, have their priorities f^#@ed, & have been, since the entire nucleus have gotten their last contracts. Utley has done nothing but selfishly lie about his health, for 3 years now, since his extension. Rollins is complacent, dogs it, because he does care. Howard should have never been given, his unwarranted extension, 2 years earlier than necessary. Hamels, got his career ending contract. They all won a WS, all have accomplished personal gratification & awards, all multimillionaire fat cats, & all are at the end of the road. So what exact incentive do they have, to go all out & care. Utley has been surprisingly good to start the season, but he uncharacteristically brain farts, too many times too. This is why, I’ve been harping for 3 years, about replacing the aging, declining core, with younger talent. Proactive, smart, capable organizations, can do things like that. That’s why Ruin 2morrow Jr. HAS TO GO! No more excuses! No more using hindsight, as the main excuse! No more desperation moves! No more band-aids! No more dumpster diving! No more deluded false hopes for this nucleus! The window is shut! Time for Ruin 2morrow Jr., Manuel, Dubie, Lee, Rollins, Utley, Papelstiff, Durbin, & both Youngs to go. Replace Ruin & Manuel, with Proefrock & Sandberg. Get good prospects, who are ready, or close to playing, for Lee, Rollins, Utley, Papelstiff, & whatever you can, for the Youngs. Bring up, Morgan, Stutes, Ruf, Ashe, Hernandez, Joseph, Diekman, & let them play everyday, for the rest of the season. Enough, is enough!

Dcar & Myself have been saying this for 2 + Years now..
This is the Price you Pay when half your Roster has Long-Term, Overpaid Contracts, You end up stuck with underperforming Players that are very difficult to Trade or else you eat Bad Contract $$$ which prevents from replacing them with Quality Players.. (remember Mike Bell and Mike Lieberthal, the Bad Dea’s that they had) .. Phils need a real Baseball GM
No long-Term Deals over 3 Years for anyone

This team hasn’t hit consistently since Jayson Werth left, along with the binoculars incident in Colorado a couple of years back. I don’t breaking it up will fix things, but tweaking is a must!!!

Phils biggest problem is that the majority of their line-up swing and miss the ball entirely.. I’ve never seen a Major LEague swing and miss as often as these guys do… Only Chase Utley & Micheal Young make consistent Contact
but Rollins,Revere,Howard,Brown, D Young swing and miss the ball completely.
Way too many Strike-outs for a Club with little POwer.. The Way this Team is Built, they should have a Team Batting Average up in the .255 to .260 Range and not the .244 as they are now, which is ranked 12th In the NL so if your Team Batting Average is among the Leagues worst, Your Power #’s are Bad, Your Runs Scored are among the League’s basement, is it no wonder that the Phils are not going to win too many games
Here are some Woeful Batting Stats from the 2013 Phillies so far (and remember that 1/4 of the Season is complete)

Team Batting Average – .244 (Ranked 12th out of 16 Teams in NL)
On-Base % as a Team – .303 (Ranked 12th in the NL)
Slugging % as a Team – .379 (Ranked 12th in the NL)
Total Runs Scored – 157 (Ranked 12th and 20 Runs below the 11th Place Team)
Home-Runs as a Team – 38 (Ranked 11th in the NL)
Doubles as a Team – 71 (Ranked 8th in the NL)
Triples as a Team – 7 (Ranked 6th in the NL)
Stolen Bases as a Team – 23 (Ranked 12th)
Caught Stealing – 11 Times (Stolen Base Succesful % is 68% which is horrible, remember with Davy Lopes that were like 90%+ during his Time and among MLB Leaders year in and year out with Lopes on board)
Strikeouts – 326 Times as a Team (Rank’s 9th in the NL)
Bases on Balls – 118 Times as a Team (Rank’s 12th in he NL)
Hit-Ball by Pitcher – 11 Times as a Team ranking 11th in NL, remeber the Phils usd to be among the League Leaders in this Category with standing their ground and not giving in to opposing Pitchers)

So when you look at the aggredate Statistics of this 2013 Phils Season
a coupld of things jump out on you
– Lack of Putting the Ball in Play, Lack of Runs and Power #’s
– Too few getting on base, the threat of Stealing is not there to put extra pressure on opposing Defense’s and Pitchers
– Not working the Pitch count enough to get into a Batter’s Advantage, poor Plate DIscipline..

Most of the OFfensive Categories have the Phils ranked 12th out of the 16 NL Teams so the fac that they are only 5-6 Games out of the Wildcard Race is pretty amazing with these anemic Offensive #’s ..With a 1/4 of the Season gone already, the Phils even with a hot Stretch wil probably only improve up to about
8th Overall Offensively as a Team which is Average which is what I stated this Team would be in 2013 which is a 82-84 Win Team at Best..

Scoring an average of 3.48 Runs per game thru their first 45 Games is not getting it done anyway you slice or dice it.. If you can’t score 4.25 – 4.5 Runs per Game as an average, you are not going to Win many Games, Period..

Even this doesn’t tell the whole story…If you check, I believe the Phillies have 17 games this year where they have scored 2 runs or less…That’s how bad their offense is.

That’s 17 out of 45 games played.
