Howie Roseman: Likes players buying in, But regrets “good players who fall by the wayside”

ChipKelly15Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman says he likes what he seeing at Nova Care Complex as Chip Kelly and the Eagles go through their OTA’s.  Roseman likes the uptempo, high energy workouts, which show a motivated and enthused football team.

“The most important thing we have is buy-in from our players. When you see how hard they’re working, how hard they’re training, I think that’s the reason for optimism, that they’re buying in.”

Yes the players are working hard, but working hard in and of itself doesn’t matter.  Everybody is working hard during the offseason. I don’t think that’s a big deal during the off season.  Players are trying to make the team and show Kelly what they can do.

The important time will be early in the next season, when players are playing in the new system.  How much success are they having in the new system?  If they’re struggling then, Kelly’s job will be tougher to keep them committed to the system.

If they’re playing well offensively, running the ball effectively, wearing down the opposing line and pummeling the other team, then you’re going to have the players buying in.

When a coach or his system helps a player become more productive, then you’ve got yourself a player who will buy in.  If they don’t succeed, then the players will not be committed to the coach and system.  Kelly needs success and  I’m interested in seeing how much early success the Eagles have next year.

Roseman doesn’t like the thought of the Eagles getting rid of good players, who have been productive during their careers with the Birds, but he knows some will be leaving the ball club in the near future.  It’s inevitable when a team changes coaches and systems.

“One of the things that’s hard for us and you’ve seen some of it this offseason, we’ve had players that were good players in a different scheme that we’ve invested in and it’s not going to turn over”.

“For me, that’s different because we’ve been with one head coach, but when you talk with people around the league, they tell you, ‘When you change coaches, when you change schemes, there are going to be good players who fall by the wayside,’ and that’s hard for the general manager because you know it’s a good player. You know in a different scheme he’s going to be a good player, but at the same time you know it’s not a good fit for you.”

I know he’s probably dreading the idea of saying good-bye to Trent Cole.  The defensive end turned linebacker doesn’t look like a good bet to make the team.  Cole is a liability when dropping into coverage against running backs, tight ends and wide receivers.  He’s also not suited to playing head up on the biggest offensive tackles in the league.

Cole is probably going to play for somebody else next year and he’ll play well, but he doesn’t fit into what the Eagles are doing defensively.

Vinny Curry was drafted a year ago to be a pass rushing defensive end in a 4-3 defense.  Now he’s being asked to play the defensive end position in a 3-4, which is totally different.  Curry isn’t big enough to play defensive end in a 3-4.  He’s also not fast or quick enough to play outside linebacker.  The young man will likely be playing elsewhere in 2013.

Last year the Birds drafted Nick Foles in the third round and he looked promising when he took over for Michael Vick, but does he fit in what Chip Kelly wants to do.  Can you really see Foles running the read option?  Could Foles be the Eagles quarterback of the future despite his slow feet?

Tight end Clay Harbor is a long shot to make the team, now that Zach Ertz and James Casey have been acquired via the draft and free agency.  He’s young, with good speed and he’s improving.  Harbor will catch on with another team if he’s released.

In the end, we’re going to be forced to wait and see exactly which players Roseman was talking about.

Harbor is not going to catch on.. HE’s in his what 4th Year in the NFL and has done very little despite his Opportunities… Good PLayers,Prospects have a 2-3 Year Window at Max to preve they belong in the NFL, Clay Harbor has not proven a thing in my opinion.. Yes he’s athletic, but so are all NFL PLayers, you have to produce and perform..
I see about 5-6 Veteran Players playing their final Season as Eagles
Mike Vick,Todd Herremans,Brett Celek, Jason Avant. Trent Cole, DeMeco Ryans,Nate Allen and possibly Brandon Graham.. You simply cannot get rid of every Player in a Rebuilding Process in Year 1.. These above Players can all still play Football and contribute, but they really don’t fit the new Eagles Schemes on both sides of the ball very well, moving forward and I expect a couple of them not to even make the 53 Man Roster or get Traded and the rest of them still here in 2013 to be phased out of Starting/Playing Time by mid-season by younger Players who fit the future plans moving forward…

Harbor will be around and may stick. Casey just had knee surgery but they say it was minor.

Clay Harbor will be like the “Boston Tea Party” and thrown overboard into Egg Harbor in mid/late August..
Casey only had a scope done and will be up and around in 3 week’s time, no biggie for him…

I think I mentioned it before, but with Harbor it’s going to depend on whether Chip Kelly decides to stick to the idea of running a lot two tights formations…if he does stick to that idea he’s going to need at least 4 TEs. Casey doesn’t count as a TE, because he’s officially the team’s fullback.

The Trent Cole issue is another one all together. I already read that essentially he’s no good in coverage, but if I look at the lineage of the “Leo”/”Elephant”/”Predator” role I can go back to seeing Charles Haley playing that role in San Francisco. Haley was never out in coverage and he wasn’t a monstrous DE. It just comes down to whether Davis knows how to maximize the talent.

Trent Cole is done. We have short memories. He wasn’t very good in the 4-3. For the last 3 years he disappeared after week 8 and last year he was a no show from week 1 with with 3 sacks all year. Now your asking him to change positions? I read all these fans say let him do what he does best. Well quite frankly he does nothing well anymore.

Daggolden – why do you guys insist on writing these unsubstiansiated blanket statements “dissapeared after week 8” over and over?

2008 3 sacks over first 8 games, 6 sacks over last 8
2009 7.5 sacks in first 8 games 5 sacks iover last 8 games
2010 7 sacks over first 8 games, 3 sacks over last 8 games
2011 4 sacks over first 8, 7 sacks over last 8

Sometimes more in the first half, sometimes more in the second half…..overall consistent.

Now 2012 was a complete aberration…3 sacks and 24 tackles .The question is why?

You all know I like to use averages…I always feel players will return to their averages after either a really great season or a really bad season. Those our outliers. I understand that age of course plays a role and so do injuries – But those don’t really play in Cole’s case…he’s 30 and should have a couple productive years left, and he’s been relatively injury free.

since becoming a starter Cole has gone:

8, 12.5, 9, 12.5, 10, 11, 3 for sacks.
43, 49, 59, 49, 50, 41, 24 for tackles

Untill last year he’s been pretty consistent…..So why the sudden drop in production last year?

It could have been due to age, attitude, but I’m more inclined to think it was just a statistical outlier. If given the same pass rushing opportunities he’s had in the past, I predict he returns to around 10 sacks 50 tackles, and produces like that untill age 32.

Coles Play suffered as all the Eagles Defenders did with the Carosel of Defensive Coaches and Schemes (3 DC’s in the last 4 Years from Sean McDermott,Juan Castillo & Todd Bowle’s mixed in with Washburn’s Wide-9 Garbage)
I believe Cole coupld play 25 Snaps a game and play as a Pass-Rushing DE on Passing Downs/Situations only and still end up with 8-10 Sacks a Season.. But do you Pay a Player at Big $$$ to be a Rotational PLayer is the question.. Eagles can afford his Contract this Season no problem, but moving forward, he will have to adjust his Contract or be released and the same goes for ILB DeMeco Ryans and OL Todd Herremans.. These Players will all have to take Pay Cuts or this will be their Final Seasons as an Eagle, which I am totally fine with.. You can’t get rid of everyone in one off-season, but these players I just mentioned do not fit the future of the Eagles and coupld add Vick,Celek,Avant to this list as well
