Notes From The Phillies’ 5-2 Loss To Washington

kendricknationThe Philadelphia Phillies had their two-game winning streak snapped on Friday night, falling to the Washington Nationals 5-2. Their record drops to 23-25 on the season.

  • Kyle Kendrick was unable to bounce back from a subpar outing against the Reds, allowing five runs in five innings tonight. Kendrick had a lot of trouble locating the strike zone, issuing four walks in the game. His inability to hit his spots caused to him to throw a lot of hittable pitches into the strike zone.
  • Kendrick was able to get through the first four innings and only gave up one run, but the Nationals finally got to him for four runs in the fifth inning.
  • Kendrick’s offense got him a couple of runs early in the game, but as soon as Washington had their four-run outburst, the Phils’ bats just mailed tonight’s game in and accepted defeat. They didn’t manage a single baserunner from the sixth inning on.
  • Domonic Brown went 2-3 with an RBI single, and also came around to score a run.
  • Erik Kratz knocked in the team’s second on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
  • Ryan Howard helped set up the team’s first run with a leadoff double in the second inning, but went hitless in his final three at-bats.
  • Michael Young went 0-4, and now has just one hit in his last 11 at-bats. The team really needs him to pick things up with Chase Utley and Carlos Ruiz out.
  • Mike Stutes made his first appearance of the season, and threw two scoreless innings to keep the team in the game.

Final Thoughts

Kyle Kendrick may have run out of magic.

Kendrick’s run of great outings has come to an end, and suddenly in his last two starts he’s looked much more like the Kyle Kendrick that Philadelphia expects him to be. He’s allowed nine runs in his last 11 innings, and his ERA has gone up to 3.29.

Even though it’s something we’ve seen plenty of times before, the lack of fight that this teams typically shows is just disappointing. Once the Nationals took their lead, the bats just quit.

By no means is a three-run lead insurmountable, and these are pivotal games against a division rival. And the minute that things went south, this team couldn’t even manage to get one guy on base for the rest of the night in the final four innings?

Effort like that is never acceptable.

At least we got my boys Stutes & DeFratus, in the BP! It only took over 1/4 of the season, of Valdez, Durbin, & Horst, to do so. Aumont, gets 1 more shot, to rectify his erratic control in the minors, or he should be gone too! This team, is a mess. Revere isn’t a MLB player. It’s ashame, because I like the kid, but he simply can’t play. He may be fast, but he has no baseball acumen, & has to over-compensate for it, with his athletic abilities, thus over-playing, & misjudging plays, consistently! He hits like a Tee-baller, & throws like a blind girl. If I see 1 more error, or hit into a DP by Michael Young, I’m going to rip my own head off! Pathetic!

I agree about revere, he overcompensates with his speed to make up for what appears to be poor reaction, decisions on where and when to break for the ball

throws “like a blind girl”, man that’s harsh, a severe down grade from noodle arm.

Revere is Victorino with less ability. Terrible signing.

E-$$$, it was a trade. We traded Worley & May for him. Worley is a gas can, but May can still be a middle of a rotation starter. He was a desperation, consolation prize, because our fearless leader didn’t make any other moves. We traded more for this Little leaguer, than Washington traded for his X-teammate Span. Who is a natural leadoff hitter, & much better, all around, than Paul Revere.

It was a trade for Revere..
This next Week (7 games versus the Nats and Red Sox) will
Let us know if this Phillie Team has a legitimate shot at a Wildcard Spot
Or whether they be Sellers at All-Star Break
They have scraped, clawed there way to almost .500 but cannot afford to go 3-4 or 2-5 in this Stretch .. The Nats have been struggling as well
And the Red Sox have both Middkebrooks & Victorino on the DL List so no excuses a out injuries for every team has them.. It’s about the 25 Man Roster stepping up and performing well when called upon and I am not sold that the Phillies Roster is deep or strong enough to beat the better Teams in MLB
Time will tell.. The month of June will be pivotal to the how this Team and Franchise will look for future, tough decisions by GM Amaro have to be made

I watched some of the game, and I saw this:

I started watching, I believe 2 or 3rd inning, with Kendrick pitching to Ozuma, Marlin’s RF…Now, I missed maybe first 3 or so pitches, and then I saw Ozuma work Kendrick into maybe a 13 pitch at bat before hitting a pop-up.

But what I didn’t see was Kendrick throw ONE strike to Ozuma…The end result was OK, but, you see, Kendrick has the tendency to nibble, and this is his downfall.

Almost every starting pitcher in MLB can throw the ball up there 90-93 MPH: this is called a FASTBALL…Can’t maintain this velocity, but can bring it when needed…Kendrick seems to have no confidence in his fastball, especially last night…A pitcher MUST throw strikes, and you must be able to spot the fastball when you are throwing junk…Kendrick’s stuff is better than junk, for sure, but he just gets too cute, and this is what holds him back from being a consistent 15 game winner…You have to go after a hitter sometimes, and if the batter hits it, so what?…But you can’t just nibble, because you will throw way too many pitches, and, psychologically, you put yourself in a hole.

If the Phils won, they would have been at .500…But, again, they display inconsistency, and an acceptance of losing.

Time for a change from Charlie: He is a multi-millionaire, so no tears for him: his time is just up, and we need a change if we are to secure a playoff spot this year…I believe this is possible, but not with the current culture of ‘almost’.

I like how Delmon Young is playing, I like Dom Brown and even Revere at times, but he is young and needs to be ‘straightened out’ from time to time…Sandberg could be the guy to do this.

I want to see a ‘go after them’ attitude consistently, not a ‘Well, you know, baseball’s a funny game…’ attitude.
