Kelly says pace of plays was slow[media id=335 width=480 height=360]Throughout the NFL and all over the country coaches and fans have been raving about the Chip Kelly offense and the pace of the plays. Everyone was amazed about the Eagles running more than 50 plays in the first half, but that had a lot to do with the Redskins turning the ball over two times in their first four plays and adding a safety to that a short time later.
Kelly’s offense is the talk of the country as they put up 443 total yards on the 77 plays which they ran during the game. They scored 26 points in the first half and 33 for the game, but it could and should have been much more.
The Eagles were fortunate early on to keep getting the football over and over. Despite their success offensively, they left a lot of plays on the field. Michael Vick made some good throws and good decisions, but he missed a number of throws and made a number of poor decisions. The best thing he did do was not turn the ball over.
I expected Kelly to be unhappy about the second half, but I surely didn’t expect him to be unhappy about the pace of the game.
Yesterday we were all surprised to find out that Kelly didn’t see the pace of the offense the way everyone else did.
“I felt like it was slow, to be honest with you,” the Eagles’ coach said on Tuesday morning.
“I’m not joking,” he continued. “We got to do a better job. We left the ball on the ground too much. We didn’t get the ball to the officials. We could have sped things up from a processing between plays [standpoint], and that’s something we need to work on.”
Kelly says the ball carriers should have given the ball to the refs rather than just laying it on the ground. He felt there was too much miscommunication with the play calling.
The head coach got animated during the game, when they were having trouble getting the play in to Michael Vick,
Kelly says the offense must play much better if they’re going to give themselves a chance to reach the goals they have. He’s right. I was shocked to see all the mistakes which were made by Vick, the offensive line and the receivers. They can and should play much better. There are big plays out there to be had and I could see this offense playing much better.
They can’t waste so many scoring opportunities. Too many times, they were in scoring position, but failed to take advantage of that. There’s plenty of room for improvement and that’s a good thing for Chip Kelly and his crew. Looking at the tape and realizing that they’re capable of playing much better should keep them grounded and not over-confident.
This was the guys (Kelly) 1st game in the NFL. You cannot expect that it will be perfect for nearly a couple years, but it shows that the guy is committed to having an uptempo team and more importantly committed to running the ball.
Great start. Looking for more exciting things to come from this coach and his staff. There is no doubt that there was an excellerated pace of play, and it will be interesting to see how the players hold up physically over a 16 games (hopefully more!) games. Chip had alot more players on his team in college, and he also was able to get huge leads and rest his starters, so watching some of the older players at the end of the season will be something we should all look for.
Great start Chip. Keep pushing the envelope and making other teams loose sleep waiting for us to come to town. GO BIRDS!!
Kelly’s system is simple. Be more organized, Be Faster, Take advantage of the other guy’s inability to adjust fast enough.
Problem was in the 2nd half the team slowed down allowing the skins to keep up and adjust.
He must keep running fast which may mean- 2nd team go, 1st team go, 2nd team go in the second half of games.
The problem was they took on offense predicated on 4-5 different options on each play and made it one option… Give to shady. It wasn’t really skins adjustments at all. Birds went straight run with no threat of QB keep or pass. Move a bunch of dudes in the box
I agree with Cigar here. Some of the issue was tempo, but most was due to play selection.
I do think that it would be good if they could develop a 4 minute offense that could run more time off the clock if they have a lead. They could even come up to the line early and then just survey the defense like Brady/Manning do while the clock is running down to keep the D on the field.
true indeed…the play selection in the 2nd half after Shady scored that TD…was run, run and run…it was all play calling…need to get 5-6 yards on 1st and 2nd downs…make it manageable 3rd downs…Eagles threw 5 passes in the 2nd half, I believe….Its was a predictable offense…
exactly, so can they sustain drives that are not at 100 mph? If so, then they will be in good shape since it seems like they will be able to score points. If not, the defense is going to wear down in the 2nd half.
I think so…as long as the play book isn’t closed down, they will be fine…
all teams cut the playbook in half with a 26 point lead– the difference for the eagles is that they run the the RO pretty much exclusively and a RO without the ‘O’ its not nearly as effective–this isn’t a problem kelly had in college– he is a bright guy and he knows this whole thing much better than we do– he will put in a kill the game wrinkle guaranteed
This of course would mean that your 2nd team has to be effective.
I’m still waiting to hear from those who claimed this was a 4-6 win season regardless of QB and the season should be sacrificed in an effort to see if Foles will be the QB of the future.
what happened guys?
Still feel the Eagles should waste their core offensive players prime years to see if an unproven QB?
you know I’m one of the most optimistic fans on here Songs…but we ain’t get to 4-6 wins yet…and I’m rather superstitious so lets not jinx anything….lets take it week by week, game by game…Believe….we always have a shot!
The troll rears his ugly head again.
Those are 2 different groups of people you are talking about, and I have actually heard from both of them. Maybe if you read posts instead of just trying to be right or sew discord, then you would actually answer your own questions.
What happened to your boy RG3 and your Redskins? That is what I want to know.
my boy rg3 got his ass kicked and I love it.
Vick is the guy and I will always be behind him and the Eagles now Andy freakin Reid is outta here and if Reid was still here I would have continued my financial strike against the organization. Again, I made it clear for the last 2 years that my family would not put in one red cent until Reid is gone and I purchased RG3 gear near the holiday season in revolt.
Reid is gone and we’ll now out of the land of obscurity which I and others have been screaming for the last 3-4 years, while others here wanted to just blame Vick.’
It’s confirmed what the real problem with this organization was and the future is bright with Chip, Vick, Shady and Djax leading the way.
This team will lose no more than 6 games this year because Lurie finally pulled the trigger on “Fat Bastard” and I’m elated.
Go Eagles!!!
GO VICK!!!
P.S.
My whole family just purchased the Vick jerseys for 2013, my 1st purchase in almost 2 years.
My money have spoken.
Problem is that Vick is not the long-term answer at QB due to his age and injury History.. It’s hard to imagine him lasting more than 6-8-10 Weeks in this Offense.. I think Vick will play well this Season as I stated a few times for many reasons, but moving forward, the QB Position will need to be addressed and needed for the next QB to be ready in 2 Years time
