NFL Week 3 Reactions: Giants Hit Rock Bottom

Tom CoughlinGiants Hit Rock Bottom

It can’t get any worse for the New York Giants.

Sunday’s 38-0 thrashing at the hands of the Carolina Panthers was one of the most one-sided games I’ve ever seen.

Everything that could go wrong for the Giants went wrong. They were dominated by Carolina in all facets of the game, and Eli Manning continued to struggle, completing just 12 of 23 passes for 119 yards with an interception. The Panthers sacked Manning seven times, during the game, and the New York running game continued to be a non-factor.

Defensively, New York crumbled, allowing four total touchdowns to Cam Newton and playing uninspired football throughout the day.

Now sitting at 0-3 and showing very little signs of hope, its officially time to for New York to be concerned about their situation.

I wouldn’t write them off just yet. The Giants still have a lot of talent to reckon with. Eli Manning still has his explosive weapons to throw to, an if the team ever decides to trust David Wilson they might be able to get their ground game back. But things certainly aren’t looking good for Tom Coughlin and company right now.

Dallas Wins, Redskins Improve

The Dallas Cowboys gained a game and moved into sole possession of the NFC East with a dominating 31-7 win over the St. Louis Rams.

The difference this week for Dallas was a balanced offensive attack, as they finally made an effort to heavily involve DeMarco Murray in the gameplan. Murray finished with 25 carries for 175 yards and a touchdown, after taking just 12 carries a week ago against the Chiefs.

Tony Romo played an efficient game as well, tossing three touchdowns and no interceptions. The Dallas defense also kept the Rams’ offense in check, allowing just seven points.

It was a big win for the Cowboys, who are now beginning to create some separation for themselves in a mediocre division.

Meanwhile, the Washington Redskins fell to 0-3, but showed some signs of life in their loss to the Detroit Lions.

It was another rough game for Robert Griffin, who threw another interception and had three fumbles (losing one). But the team at least put forth a competitive effort this week, keeping the game tied until the fourth quarter. As Griffin gets closer to 100%, the Redskins are going to become a tougher out. But they aren’t there just yet.

Coaching Hot Seats

Three weeks into the season, its time to look at which coaches might be on the hot seat after early struggles.

Tom Coughlin

I don’t think Coughlin is in any immediate danger despite how miserable the Giants have looked through three weeks. The organization has been patient with Coughlin through down years and bad moments in the past, and in those previous situations the two-time Super Bowl Champion head coach has been able to get things turned around.

After bringing multiple championships to New York, Coughlin has more than earned the right to try and get his team out of the hole they’ve dug.

Leslie Frazier

The head coach of the Minnesota Vikings is officially on the hot seat after this Sunday’s embarrassing loss to a Cleveland Brown team that featured Brian Hoyer as their starting quarterback and just signed Willis McGahee off of the street to be their starting running back.

The Vikings are now 0-3. Losing to a team like Cleveland at home is simply unacceptable. It was a must-win situation, and they failed.

Add in Frazier’s failure to develop Christian Ponder into a quality starting quarterback, and you’ve got more than enough of a case to fire him. Adrian Peterson’s best years have been wasted under the Brad Childress and Frazier regimes.

Greg Schiano

Things are getting really ugly in Tampa Bay.

The Bucs are 0-3 and aren’t showing much reason for optimism. Josh Freeman is looking more and more like a first-round bust, and the starter has been at odds with Schiano for some time now, causing a rift in the locker room.

Schiano’s team has begun to tune him out, and that could send him back to the college ranks soon.

Around The League Quick Thoughts

  • The Cincinnati Bengals may be ready to take the next step. The Bengals came up with a huge win over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, winning a 34-30 ballgame. The Bengal defense held Aaron Rodgers in check, giving up under 250 passing yards and intercepting the Pro-Bowler multiple times. Andy Dalton led the team on several late scoring drives in the second half, and Terrence Newman gave them a go-ahead score on a 58-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.
  • The Miami Dolphins are the most surprising 3-0 team, coming up with another impressive victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Ryan Tannehill led the team on a come-from-behind victory, as Miami scored 17 second half points.
  • After a spectacular showing against the Packers in Week 1, Colin Kaepernick has been dreadful in the last two weeks. Kaepernick has turned the ball over six times, and the Niners have fallen to 1-2.
  • Peyton Manning has 12 touchdowns through the first three games, which is an NFL record. Look out Billy Davis, he’s coming for your dreadful defense next.

Not a huge Surprise to see both the Giants decline (just as the Steelers)
both Teams have horrible OL and really did nothing to address them last Off-Season.. The Steelers got a bad break in losing their best OL (Center M Pouncey) but their OT’s are not NFL Caliber as the NY Giants arenm’t much better as both Teams have not Drafted or developed well at these crtical positions
Both Teams have not legitimate RB, and have always prided themselves as a smash mouth Style of FOotball where the Run sets up their Play-action and big play capability down the field …
Many of the Giant Players appear to be going thru the motions, WR Nicks, DE J Tuck don’t even look like they wnat to play all out anymore ..JPP has disappointed since his 1 good Season 2 Years ago.. Has continual back issues and pain and may not be the long-term great Pass-Rusher that he appeared to be just 2 Seasons ago.. WE Nicks will be moving on in Free-Agency as the Giants are not going to resign him since they decided to sign Cruz to a big deal instead.. Nicks has underachieved, has had his work ethic and team loyalty quesitoned and will be out the door after this season and probably should have been dealt befor the Season even started..

Any Surprise that some long-standuing Coaches & Teams with same Staffs for a few years are steuggling this Season this far
Teams like the Giants, Redskins, Packers, 49ers,
Falcons, Vikings, Steelers that have had little turnover in their Staffs and Rosters are struggling this early Season..
Is the Game changing that much or the Players or some of these Teams Staffs have become Stale and Predictable…
Something to keep an eye on as the Season Progresses

The staffs have become stale & predictable…Plus many players are millionaires and don’t have the desire.
This is why I love to watch Peyton Manning, exceptually disciplined and maybe the best QB ever.

Yeah he may be the best regular season QB ever. We will see what1 and done Peyton does in the playoffs. Saying all that this may be the first year in many where everyone knows the outcome of the season already. Seattle vs Denver. I would give the nod to Seattle if the game was played in Seattle where they are unbeatable. But since its on a neutral field Denver has a shot. But still leaning towards Seattle. Don’t trust Peyton in big games.

Peyton is a timing QB who excels in diagnosing pre-snap defense’s intentions – disrupt the timing routes and the D’s chances increases.

Agreed. Manning I has come up small in big games over his career. Got 2 gifts forst with the Pitt defender cutting back to the middle of the field instead of heading outside, and then getting to face the overmatched Bears in that SB.

Still, his incredible reg season consistency always gives his teams a chance to at least compete for the prize.

Yes the jets have surprised out of the gate,
Remember that they have a lot of new Coaches on that Staff from DC, LB’s to OC & QB & WR Coaches with Rex Ryan
So some fresh eyes and ideas for them..

it could be Vick’s last game if the birds lose. The Eagles were 4-12 last season and coach Reid was fired if they start 1-3 that would be the same exact losing % and Vick would be 1-9 in his last 10 starts.

So I guess the eagles should just keep starting Herremans too. He’s not the sole reason for the losses. I think they should roll out Allen and Chung every game. Maybe even next year. They’re not the sole reason for the 1-9 record either.

In fact, no one is responsible. Why make any changes!! 1-9 is good enough.

When will u offer anything to the convo? And why wont u pay up on your bet?

Best players play.

So I guess Ertz should never play then. Because right now Celek and Casey are better. Right now.

Johnson should never play. They could have signed a journeyman RT. Or perhaps even Herremans, both would be better than Johnson. Right now.

Vick (may be) better. Right now. But we know his ceiling isn’t good enough. And this team is not at all about right now.

Casey isn’t better than any TE/FB on the team….you’ve hardly seen the guy get a snap…you sound ridiculous, shut your dumb ass up!

September 25, 2013 2:44 pm

If its 4th and 2 and we need aa TE to catch the ball- I dont think Ertz should be in there yet. He has a skill set that is better than the others AT TIMES. In those times… they should use him.

Johnson is the best we have it seems. If there was another out there that could have been signed… i would have rather worked him in over the stretch of the year as he became the best player. BUT… when you draft a guy that high… you are kinda hoping he’s better than the journeymen out there.

This idea that Vick might not be the best qb on the roster is silly. Its based on nothing. Not stats. Not things we’ve seen on the field of play. Not on anything we have heard come out of meetings. I want the eagles to win. Vick out of 3 games has helped his team score 30 or more points twice. 30 points should equal a win. Vick is going to play for at lease 1 more year. My hope (and the hope of most of us) is that they will use this year to build for next year.

Do they need a QB long term? Sure….

skayne

September 25, 2013 2:52 pm

You come up with more and more nonsense Vinnie. First off, the skill positions all rotate, except for Qb. So Ertz is going to get on the field, even if he doesn’t start.

Johnson is the best option at tackle so he plays. Why don’t you give it a rest about Vick? He and Foles had a competition, and he smashed him. Give it up.

All this garbage about playing Foles to get development, when the fact is most young Qbs sit when the veteran is clearly better. Rodgers sat for years. Brady sat. The only time the young Qb plays is when he shows he’s the best option. Foles had his chances, last year and this offseason. He failed. Now he waits.

you know what? I concede…….

The next time the Eagles offense led by Vick takes us down the field and score to take the lead, or get us within striking distance only to have the defense allow a crossing pattern reception on 3rd and forever to keep a drive alive that results in the opposing team winning the game, we’ll agree it’s Vick’s fault.

When Vick drives the team down the field to set up a game tie or win and the kicker miss wide left……..

You got it.

The loss is a direct result of how the team played last year and Vick is the reason.

Yeah

I concede.

**NFL News ***
The Josh Freeman Experiment is over in Tampa Bay as HC Schiano has decided to bench the former Buc “Franchise QB” in favor or Mike Glennon
Expect the Bucs to attempt to Trade Freeman to the Vikings or Browns
for he’s the final piece that HC Schiano has been trying to run out of town..
as he did TE K Winslow Jr, CB A Talib, RB L Blount and some of their other Players who did not conform to his Strict Ways of Coaching…

Everyone scores 30+ against Washington and SD.

Seems like the 49ers went with a qb who wasn’t the best (at the time) on the roster. Should they have? The guy they replaced had just been in the NFC championship game and at the time was 6-2 with 12 tds and 4 ints.

But they knew his limitations and knew that it was time to move forward with a kid…maybe that will work…maybe not.

Why is TB replacing Freeman with 3d round pick Glennon?

Why are the Jets sticking with Smith and his 6 ints in 3 games?

Why is Buffalo sticking with 1 EJ Manuel?

Why did Miami stick with Tannehill and his 1-3 start when he threw 2 tds to 6 ints? or later midway through the season when he lost 3 straight and threw 2 tds and 5 more ints?

Why did Tenny keep going back to perennial 50% man Locker when they had SB starter Hasselback on the bench?

OOOOOHHHHHH….its because they don’t have 4-9 over the past 2 seasons Mike “the fading superstar” Vick sitting on the roster! If they had Vick, like the birds do…they’d have stuck with the “best player” theory.

If they did, those kids would never have seen the field. Because he’s “better”.

Those teams recognized that they were going nowhere, and they needed to make a change at the most important positions on the field.

News flash genius….there are a lot of NFL QBs who are better than Foles (or Barkley) right now.

If VIck gets hurt should we try to trade for Freeman then? Maybe Sanchez…he’s been to a couple of AFC championship games, so clearly he’d be a better option thn FOles too.

You down with that idea? As long as its a ‘better player’ RIGHT NOW, he should be the starter right?

You’ve never heard of the saying ‘short term pain for long term gain I guess’.

As long as “Vick isn’t the problem” it doesn’t matter…..even though while he might not be “part of the problem” he sure as hell is not “part of the solution”
But starting any of the fading old nobodies who aren’t leading this team anywhere would be as stupid as starting Vick.

What is most interesting is how vehemently you defend the decision to start a guy you know has absolutely no chance to lead the Birds anywhere this year or next.

vinnietheevictor
vinnietheevictor
September 25, 2013 3:27 pm

Skyane…..

Rodgers sat behind a guy who won a SB MVP. And was 13-3 in his last season with GB. (and look I’m no Favre fan, but you’re not going to replace a guy going to the HOF with a kid that easily)

As for the Brady thing….believe me, there were plenty of intelligent NE fans begging for Bledsoe to be replaced….and they (like me) were correct…..I have no idea why Bledsoe was playing, but the $100 million contract he signed to play there probably had a lot to do with it – that isn’t the case with the Birds anymore……

So what will it take then? 1-3? 2-4? 2-5? Will a 7-9 season keep him around? Is that good enough for you?? Because if the Eagles go 7-9, that’s not good enough for one of the draftable qbs…….

Oh wait…….I forgot….this isn’t Vick’s fault…..so if they draft a bunch of D players….then NEXT YEAR will be Vick’s year…because THEN he’ll have a team around him!!!

If not now, then when?

But I love how you call a QB who is 1-8 in his last 9 starts, with 7 of them having less than 20 points scored, who just became the NFL’s active leader in fumbles, who’s thrown a pick six and a doink 6 in his first 3 games, and who is, what? 27th in completion percentage “clearly better”

His production for the first 2 games was good….but, seeing that every other qb that faced those teams from Locker, to Schaub, to Stafford to Rodgers all had equal to or better than Vick games….

I lean more towards “pathetic defense” then “great QB”

I mean combined, qbs have thrown for 2100+ yards and 14 tds (against only 2 ints) in the 6 games against SD and Was. That’s pretty damned pathetic.

But…..

By your logic Carson Palmer must be a great QB I suppose….or did he just look good because of the terrible Eagles D??

They didn’t play Favre because he’s a Hall of Famer. They played him cuz he was better at the time. Plain and simple. People were calling for Bledsoe because like you, they think you’re supposed to give the most important job on the field to a lesser player, just to see what happens.

Except no successful NFL franchise uses real games as development. The offseason is about development, the the regular season is about putting your best 53 out there, because if you don’t win games you lose revenue. Your whole philosophy is winning games should be put on hold until we find a Hall of Fame Qb. As I said before, successful franchises balance winning now with developing for the future. Worrying only about the future while ignoring the present is just as bad as mortgaging your future to only focus on the present.

Successful franchises do both at the same time. That’s why we have a mixture of youth with veterans.

And the difference between Foles and Brady? Brady seized on his opportunity to play by winning. Brady wasn’t a top Qb at first, but they stayed with him when he proved they could win with him as starter, and not one moment before. Foles blew both his chances. So he waits. While the vet qb who’s offense is top 10 stays on the field.

Meanwhile, the defense, which you conveniently forget about when listing Vick’s record, tries to improve towards respectability.

Stevo
Stevo
September 26, 2013 11:31 am

If Vick is scoring 30 points a game and they are 1-15.. i still want Vick to start because It clearly shows that this O could win games. If that is the case…. I pray they keep the O as is for the 2014 season and work at fixing the D.

I very strongly believe that this team could upgrade 2 or 3 spots on D and be good enough to lead us deep in the playoffs. It does not appear that this will happen this year but no reason to scrap the parts that are working for the sake of “change”. If the entire thing on O falls off and Vick goes back to non stop turnovers… then we bring in the Kids for Change sake.

But my opinion (nor yours) means anything…. and I am choosing to support this new coach and his new system until he proves to me that he is unable to win. He was dealt a horrible D and it’s going to take time. I believe we will be much much better by the end of the year on D and next year we will be even better.

vinnietheevictor
vinnietheevictor
September 25, 2013 7:45 pm

OMG. So wrong on so many points. I won’t even get to the “lost revenue” garbage. Or the complete lie about my ignoring the terrible D (the terrible D is one of the main reasons Foles should be starting)

People were calling for Bledsoe to be shipped because they knew they weren’t going anywhere with a fading never was on the wrong side of 30. They still celebrate the “Bart Scott Moment” because it forced the team to make the decision everyone knew was needed, but couldn’t be made for financial (re salary) reasons.

Tom Brady did nothing statistically for his first 3 games, losing 2…they kept him on because there was no one else….he then continued to improve as the season progresses….though I think the circumstances of his arrival were a little more favourable doncha think….I mean, like Foles, did he enter with a team already finished, dead man walking coach, and a good group of players who had quit?)

I’m not saying Foles is Tom Brady, so don’t get your panties in a bunch…I’m just saying he had POTENTIAL to be good, or even very good QB for the Eagles over the next 10 years.

Vick does not.

So the Eagles Have to find out. Luckily for NE fans they got a Bart Scott moment and were able to find out….over the course of a season!

But wait….Skayne doesn’t think it takes a season of playing….he says development can happen in the offseason (because of course, that’s exactly where QBs get exposed to different personnel, reads, Ds, co-ordinators etc)

Skayne, obviously seduced by the bit of early success enjoyed by last year’s crop of QBs (outlier) don’t need to be on the field to develop.

He says, “no successful franchise uses real games as development”

Except for Dallas. Going 0-11 with Aikman throwing 9 tds to 18ints
Except for Indy. Going 3-13 with Manning throwing 26tds and 28 ints (28!!)
Except for SD. Going 10-18 over 2 seasons with Brees watching 28 tds and 31 ints (and then letting him go…..whoops!)
Except for NYG going 1-6 with Eli watching 6 tds and 9 ints

ANd so on….look…I don’t have any problem with guys sitting on the bench….for a few years….it works…..and has been very successful with Young, Rodgers etc….but those guys that sit for 3 or 4 years sit because they ‘re behind HOF QBs. Guys who have won SBs….often multiple SBs….you can’t replace guys like that easily.

But you sure as hell should be able to replace a guy who hasn’t won a playoff game since 2004.

2004…you know, when Brittney Spears was still hot. And smartphones hadn’t been invented. And ‘Frasier’ was the #1 sitcom.
