Eagles-Giants Pregame Thoughts

MichaelVick1How The Giants Can Beat The Eagles

When New York met the Eagles earlier in the season, they played Chip Kelly’s group pretty well through three quarters. New York needs to to build on what they were able to do well, and find a way to cut out the mistakes that allowed the Eagles to come back and win in the second half of their Week 5 tilt.

The Giants defense gave up yards, but held forced Michael Vick and the offense to settle for field goals throughout the first half. New York needs to continue to play a bend-but-don’t-break style of defense, as long as they tighten up in the red zone, they’ll be able to stay in the game.

Newly acquired linebacker Jon Beason has made a significant difference to the New York defense ever since the Giants got him in a deal with the Panthers several weeks ago. They’ve plugged him in as their middle linebacker, and he’s helped make the unit much more organized.

Michael Vick may not be 100% recovered from the hamstring injury that caused him to miss the last two weeks. He might not have all of explosiveness, and after not seeing any live game action for several weeks he could be a little rusty early in the game. The Giants need to hit him early and often to keep him from getting comfortable and if they’re able to do that they’ve got a chance to really slow down the Eagles’ offense.

Offensively, Eli Manning had plays available to him all day in Week 5 against the Eagles. Billy Davis worked hard to make sure Victor Cruz was a non-factor, and while his defense succeeded in limiting the damage of the salsa dancing receiver, Hakeem Nicks and Rueben Randle torched the Philadelphia secondary all day.

The problem was that Manning destroyed his team’s chances by committing three terrible interceptions in the second half. Manning throughout this season has been pressing and he’s forced the issue way too many times. If he can cut back on his mistakes, and patiently wait for his opportunity to strike, he can still move the ball against this defense.

Why The Eagles Will Win

Last week, the Eagles defense showed legitimate signs of improvement.

They played their strongest game of the season, limiting Tony Romo and the explosive Dallas passing attack to just 17 points.

The defense is going to have an opportunity to be in the spotlight for a second straight week, and they could very well be the reason why the Eagles win this game. They can build on their success from a week ago, and against an offense that practically serves turnovers up on a silver platter, this unit is going to have plenty of chances to change the game and put the Eagles in a position to score more points.

The Giants are also down to their fourth and fifth-string running backs, with rookie Michael Cox and newly signed Peyton Hillis heading their rushing attack. The Eagles need to bear down, and not allow either of these players to establish any kind of ground attack. The more that they can force Eli Manning to drop back and put the ball in the air, the more chances that they’ll have to create turnovers.

The Eagles can’t expect Michael Vick to do too much in his first game back from his hamstring injury (which still is not 100% healed), but he’s got to be good enough to facilitate the offense.

Vick needs to distribute the ball well to all of his receivers to keep everyone as involved as possible, and open up things for DeSean Jackson. Riley Cooper has done a nice job in the last two weeks, catching 10 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown. It may only be a flash in the pan, but for the time being the Florida product is doing a nice job and should continue to be given opportunities to produce.

The team should be able to get much more from LeSean McCoy and ground game this week. McCoy put together 92 total yards and a touchdown against New York in Week 5, and the Giants typically give up over 100 rushing yards a game. He should return to being the focal point of the offense this week.

Final Thoughts

The Giants have made some improvements in the last few weeks. Eli Manning is still turning the football over, but he’s also moving the football and connecting with his top targets Cruz, Nicks, and Randle. Jon Beason has made a difference for them defensively, and New York played some very competitive football against a pretty good Chicago team, and they earned their first win of the season last Monday against the Vikings.

It’s a team that’s playing a little better, but they’re still a 1-6 team. They’ve got no running game, a poor defense, and they lead the league in turnovers.

This is a team that the Eagles need to beat, and should beat.

Whether or not the defense’s strong effort against Dallas last week was legitimate improvement or just a flash in the pan remains to be seen, but New York is going to turn the ball over, and they’ll likely do so multiple times. As long as the Eagles are able to capitalize on those mistakes and avoid turnovers of their own, they shouldn’t have any business losing this game.

Pick: Philadelphia 27, New York 24

30-16 NYG. Vick out by halftime. Completely torn hammy. Out for year. Book it. It’s ridiculous, that he is playing. A pulled hammy, IS a partial tear. He should not be playing. It’s a stupid desperation move, by a stupid desperate coach, & QB fighting for his QB spot. Lets see, we have a QB who $#!T himself last week, choked, & is out with a bogus concussion. We have a 12 year failure, injury prone, QB playing hurt. With a rookie stiff backup. Good times. I see the horrific DF, coming back down to earth, after a decent showing last week.

So, if Vick busts out and have a killer game over 30 points sealing the first win in the Linc over a year, and come out unscathed then what would that say?

“by a stupid desperate coach, & QB fighting for his QB spot”.

Ding Ding Ding- we found a winner!! The dumbest post of the week!!

The man was offered a boat load of money to stay at O, after being offered a boat load of money to play for TB. Only AFTER he was offered a boat load of money to be the OC of the Giants and a few other teams….

THEN….. he’s offered a boat load of money to coach the Eagles or the Browns…. decides to stay school (until the O is about to get punished) and he TAKES a boat load of money to coach the Eagles- Hardly sounds “desperate” to me!!

And the QB “fighting for his Qb spot”- muahahaha- who exactly is going to take it??

Wow can you say REACH??!!!

The fact remains…. the starter is back because he wants his team to win. I thought the 100 yard dash was Stttttttuuuuuuuupppppiiiidddd BUT the players and the coaches believe this starting O has the talent to get the run game and pass game going.

Lets go Eagles, crush those Giants and PLEASSSEEE silence the haters who root for you ONLY when they have their QB.

It is kind of scary though you guys. At Michael Vick’s age there is NO WAY he is even close to 100%. Remember last season? When Andre Johnson (Who is in his thirties) pulled his hamstring and he was out like 8 weeks? I’m hoping Chip, his staff, and the doctors are actually looking out for Michael and are not putting him in a harmful situation. That will be really sad if he ends up worsening the injury.

I could be wrong, they are all with him everyday and if they think he’s more than okay to go then by all means. I predict by week 9 G.J Kinne will end up being out starting QB and leading our team to the playoffs..HAHA

He wasn’t ready to come back. The key to the game was always a healthy Vick. If he wasn’t healthy it wasn’t going to work. The end.

It’s not any more complicated than that. Apparently they thought running with a gimpy Vick was better than a healthy Barkley. They were wrong.

Experienced QB’s have played with a lot more serious injuries than a 3 Week Hamstrung.. McNabb played with Knee, Ankle and Hip problems many times and had to adjust his game to at least play effectively but with Vick, if he can’t run, he’s toast which is the story of his Career in a nutshell.. Vi k cannot adjust his scrambling style and play a game or ywo from the Pocket since he was never and still after 12 Years in the NFL a true QB..
Watch Manning perform today with a bum ankle injury, see how he adjusts.. Even a young QB RGIII has adjusted his game until he got his kegs back under him, but not Vick??

I can’t waste anymore draft picks, to select a QB, just to select a QB, that won’t be any good. It’s possible, that none of these guys turn out to be that good. There is always one who is better than the ones advertised. Do you think Howie can find him?

We should draft one late in the draft. We need defensive impact. How many times have you heard Connor Barwins, Trent Cole, Brandon Graham, and Earl Wolfe’s name today?

I don’t see it. I don’t see a competent pro. I see a college system success, with no real NFL skills, but has some athleticism.

A lot of teams are going to reach for these guys, and somebody is going to lose there job for listening to media hype, and not paying attention to, impartially evaluating the player. These guys are not all that good…from an NFL Standpoint, but excellent college QB’s. There is a big difference.

Of course watching this horrible game and looking for a positive from a team that we all knew going into the season would be horrible is something you don’t understand. Before the season we probably all predicted 3-6 wins… They are the team we all thought they would be… We wanted growth… The defense is getting better… What exactly are you watching?

I understand exactly whats going on. What I wanted, is a F^#@ing FO not to be $20M+ under the cap. I wanted a capable FO that knows how to evaluate talent, & actually fill the voids of the, & actually upgrade a f^#@ing position! As for the DF, like I said, no plays, no TO’s, no sacks! Period!!!! Growth my @$$!

Return teams have been bad for a long time now. Last time we were consistent, was Westbrooks early years.

Well, Vick tried to play through injury.

Just couldn’t get past the hammy, but one thing for sure……

Our Backups are pure garbage.

Why did they draft Barkley again?

Hammy or not; yes he was garbage. See I have no problem calling it like it is. Don’t care if he was 100% or not; I expected better play than he (Vick) gave me. That being said, Vick left early In the 1st half and too many on here (site) still make everything about him.

Eagles will not Win a Game the rest of the Year..
The 1-6 Giants (now 2-6 Giants) did everything to give Kelly and the Eagłes a chance to steal an ugly f’n game and they still couldn’t do it..
What a disgrace this Eagłes Organization has become..
We have now become the Browns, Raiders & Bills of the NFL full of dysfunction from Top to Bottom.. Time to Trade highly-paid underachievers and blow this Team the F up.. Yes, that’s Jason Peters, L McCoy, B Brown, T Cole, B Graham, T Herrenans and Mike Vick and get some additional Draft Picjs for 2014 & 2015 …
These last 2 Games in the shitty NFC East probe to me that Kelly does not have what it takes to be successful at the NFL
Level plain & simple. GM Roseman needs to be eliminated also

There’s no need to panic or feel anyway about the season at this time. I do like Chip Kelly’s offense and I have seen it succeed earlier in the season.

Chip need to get his type of guys up front on that offensive line by either moving herreman’s back to original LG position or sitting him all together.

Swap him and Mathis, and we really have to get a bigger Center.

Eagles need a C, RG & LG and will soon need a replacement for Peters who is no longer the dominant LT before his Achilles
Probably an OT with their 1st Round Pick in 2014 Draft, for there are
3-4 really good ones coming out
Don’t fall asleep with QB Sean Mannion from Oregon State who is in the Heisman Running and having a great Season for the Beavers
At 6-5″, 235lbs and good Feet .. He’s improved dramatically since last year
And has put himself in the Conversation for the Heismann and a 1st Round Pick in 2014 Draft

all the fans who expected a miracle and a top team this year are fooling themselves… an intelligent fan would have called for a 6-10 season at best.

they didnt have talent last year and picked up mediocre free agents to fill in holes and drafted poorly again. It will not change with Howie running the personnel dept.

Kelly puts his qbs in positions to fail, the Barkley fumble should have been a running play

A week earlier foles was hurting, he should have helped his struggling qb out

This Week Vick was hurt, but he didn’t devise a game plan to help him

This loss falls on the head coach

As I stated Jake
What happened the last 2 Weeks proves to me that Chip Jelly Kelly is unfit for. Contending NFL Franchise.. He just doesn’t have it.
He’s going to be another it’s my brilliant system or the highway and I will plugging in players until we find one that fits…
This is not how you devise week in and week out games plans..
Brady completes 15 passes for 150 yards today but they go on and beat a Dolphin team by employing a 3 headed Rushing Monster attack
It’s all about catering a offensive game plan on who you have available and right now, Chip Kelly lost F’n Lost and like an Amatuer out there..

Gloat as you may, but address paulman ‘s point

Chip Kelly lost this game, he doesn’t adapt a gameplan to his personell notwithstanding his braggadocious press conferences to the contrary before the season

He had enough talent to win this game easily but he lost, was out coached, and thus far has proven he’s as amateurish as lurie’s stadium, gimmicks, wind mills, solar panels

This eagles team has some quality players, mostly on defense, who thought that

Kelly vastly overrated the skill set and quality of the team’s so called offensive leaders, the three headed cancer of Vick, Jackson, McCoy, and that will be his undoing unless he figures that out quickly

This failed season started when Kelly did not properly evaluate the quality of the leadership of this team or lack thereof, especially on offense, now his Achilles heel it’s not the NCAA, where you can win by just being the best at recruiting, filling out a 100 plus roster

This is the nfl sorry chip

jake, I agree with everything, but the quality players on DF. Other than Cox, Barwin, & Thornton, who on this DF, is worth a dam? The entire secondary needs to be flushed. We have an entire LB corps. that are square pegs in round holes. The NT is a nonentity. We have 2 3 tech DE’s, playing on both sides of the NT. And the DF makes zero plays. We make no plays, get no sacks, nor TO’s. Cole, Graham, Ryans, the entire secondary (-Boykin, Fletcher?), Sopoaga, Kendricks, all need to go!
