Eagles-Bears Pregame Thoughts

NickFoles5How The Bears Can Beat The Eagles

The Chicago offense is stacked with potent weapons, and coming off of a week where the Eagles’ defense couldn’t slow down the likes of Matt Cassel, Matt Asiata, and Greg Jennings the Eagles defense is going to face a much stronger challenge this time.

Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffrey are the most explosive one-two receiver punch in the league. They’ve combined for 170 receptions, 2,450 yards, and 17 touchdowns through 15 games. Those are absolutely staggering numbers, and they’re even more impressive when you watch the film and see how difficult some of the receptions these guys are making.

As if the Marshall-Jeffrey nightmare wasn’t scary enough, running back Matt Forte brings an entire dimension of his own to the Chicago attack. Forte has accounted for 1,722 yards on his own with nine total touchdowns. He’s one of the most complete running backs in the league, and does everything from running to receiving to blocking well.

Tight end Martellus Bennett has also put up respectable numbers with 59 receptions for 659 yards and five touchdowns.

The key for Chicago is Jay Cutler. You never know what you’re going to get from this guy. He’s very inconsistent, and at his worst he can be a Romo-esque turnover machine.

Why The Eagles Will Win

The Chicago defense is one of the worst in the league.

They give up nearly 28 points a game, and they rank dead last against the run.

The Eagles are one of the best running teams in the NFL, and a week after LeSean McCoy was only given eight touches, its a very safe bet that Chip Kelly will more than make up for that puzzling total with a healthy workload against a run defense that has been gashed by many different runners this year.

With the Eagles expected to lean heavily on their ground game, it should help open things up for Nick Foles and the aerial attack. Chicago is also ranked in the bottom 10 against the pass, and the opportunity will be there for Foles to connect with his weapons.

Final Thoughts

The matchup of Marshall/Jeffrey/Forte against the Eagles defense is a pretty intimidating one, especially after the unit comes off of a week in which they played so poorly against an injury-depleted Vikings offense that was already bad to begin with. The Bears are a very difficult match for the Eagles.

However, throughout the season, Chip Kelly and the Eagles have shown an ability to bounce back from their mistakes.

I think the Eagles will adjust and clean up a lot of the errors they made a week ago in Minnesota. They aren’t going to forget about their best player, LeSean McCoy. They aren’t going to run squib kicks the entire game and give the opposing offense great field position. They can’t possibly be as bad as they were defensively a week ago…after giving up 48 points to that terrible offense, there’s nowhere to go but up.

I think this is going to be a shootout. The offenses will trade blows throughout the night with the difference being a turnover or two from Jay Cutler.

Pick: Philadelphia 38, Chicago 33

With Week 17′s match against the Dallas Cowboys shaping up to be a showdown for the division, Denny Basens and Jeff Kolsky are planning to get a group together to watch the game at XFINITY Live, and we would like to extend invitations to any and all readers of GCobb.com to come out and join us. Eh.

I don’t know if I’m as confident in the defense as you are, but ultimately that is what it comes down too. No worries of Foles throwing it 48x a game – and with their run defense being as putrid as it is, there will def be a steady dose of Shady – so offensively no worries. Defensively, well let’s hope we get the guys who were only giving up 21 points a game and not the ones who were giving up 31 points a game.

If it becomes a shootout however, advantage Bears.

A Wildcard for the Bears Defense is the return of
LB Lance Briggs and mid-Season pick-up DT Jay Ratliff to help plug the middle
With no CB Tillmann and shaky Dafety Pkay from
Slow Chris Conte, the Eagles should exploit their Secondary
If they are able to run the game.. A quick start with Fast-Tempo will chalkenge the Bears depth and the conditioning of the 2 players in Briggs & Ratliff who are not in Top Football shape..
Special Trams are huge once again and Bears Returnman Devin Always seems to play well on National Games under the Bright Lights.
Eagles will have to execute well, protect the Ball and win the a Turnover Battle to have a good chance of Winning

I think both teams will play a semi-crisp game. Maybe one turnover each. I think the return of Earl Wolff is huge, not saying he’s the x-factor but he has grown into a guy that just gets the job done. Nothing over the top. Just make the tackles that need to be made and provide adequate coverage. Boykin playing is also huge. Although he struggled last week early on, it was an even bigger eye-opener when he came out of the game. Minnesota killed us across the middle.

I see Eagles jumping out early with the Bears steadily scoring as well but inevitably falling to the Birds. 38-28.

Don’t forget their back-up RB Michael Bush who is a load also
And tough in the Red-Zone
Eagles better hit and get QB Cutler moving aroubd early and often or it may be a long evening…

Denny, good stuff. I always enjoy your pre and post game analysis. This is going to be the most potent offense the Eagles have seen since the Broncos. These receivers are huge and make ridiculous catches even when covered. The biggest factor in this game will be whether our front 7 can get pressure on Cutler. If not, it’s going to be a long night. The Outcome of the Cowboys game will also be a factor.

My only concern is will the eaglesexploit the oh so obvious weaknesses of the Bears. The Vikingshad plenty of weaknesses last week, but we didn’t run enough against them, yes Foles was off so taking advantage of their sieve likesecondary was not executed. However, the ST’s were awful, mainly due to that stupid pooch punt game plan and the defense was playing half a field throughout the game.
Go Eagles, execute, execute, execute and win!!!

Its an interesting game. If Dallas wins at 1 then, despite what he says, Kelly HAS to sit McCoy, Desean, Peters, Cox, etc through the 2nd half.

If he does that, and he’d be crucified if he didn’t and one got hurt, then he also has to sit Foles. You can’t leave the starting QB out there with backups.

Makes it a very difficult game to call.

Of course best scenario is for Wsh to win over Dallas, and GB to win over Det.

Then it will be Chicago sitting Forte, Marshall etc down and handing the game to the Eagles.

vin he can’t. he is playing for a 3 seed not 4. if 4 upsets 1 and we get the 3 seed and play 2 seed we play at home in the NFC championship game instead of potentially playing it on the road. would be an awful decision to tank especially after last week

no teams should be sitting anyone because home field is on the line.

I agree Mhenski 100%,
Eagles play to Win regardless
This Chips first Season as HC
A win tonight guarantees a Winning Record for the Season,
Also a Win tonight puts the Eagles in a situation where they could still the NFC East Crown with a Tie vs the Cowboys (Stranger things have happened)
Now I am not saying he could use done judgement and lessen the load for MCCoy/D-Jax , but I really don’t think that’s in his DNA
Maybe McCoy & D-Jax are not out there every snap in the 2nd half
But still, I think Kelky Coach’s to Win this Game and especially after last weeks questionable Strategy and Game Plan..
These Players are paid to play and is paid to Coach and Win

Cutler went to a restaurant last night in center city with Josh Mcknown, my son is a busboy there and waited on his table, he told me Cutler was very sociable with him, asking him his name, how old he is, also gave him a $100 tip, I want to see him throw 3 pic sixes tonight and get sacked 5 times and definitely lose, but besides that, I have respect for him for how he treated my son.

“As the final whistle blows in the Panthers’ final 2012 contest against New Orleans, Newton will have finished the greatest first two seasons we’ve ever seen out of an NFL quarterback. And at least in the realm of the regular season, it isn’t particularly close…

Newton enters Sunday with the following career statistics: 574-for-969 passing (59.2 percent), 7,672 yards, 40 touchdowns, 28 interceptions; 246 rushes for 1413 yards (5.7 per carry) and 22 more touchdowns. Newton’s 8,584 net yards — including 70 sacks taken for 501 lost yards — the Panthers star has an exactly 800 yard lead on Peyton Manning’s old 7,784 net yardage mark, the previous best for any quarterback in his first two seasons. Newton still has one game left.

Newton’s 7.9 yards per attempt ranks fourth (Ben Roethlisberger, Dan Marino, Mark Rypien). His 62 total touchdowns ranks second (Marino). Newton’s only major category away from the top: a 2.8 percent intereception rate, still 16th of the 78 quarterbacks since 1933 to start at least 20 games in their first two seasons. Only Andy Dalton attempted more passes than Newton of those above him on the list.

Looking deeper, Newton has compiled 244.2 EPA and 5.04 WPA. In the Advanced NFL Stats era — dating back to 2000 — only Aaron Rodgers has more EPA in his first two years as a full-time starter (at least 10 games started)…

Newton’s 5.04 WPA ranks fifth, behind Rodgers, Matt Ryan, Tony Romo and Daunte Culpepper”

They hypocrisy on this board regarding QB play is a bit ridiculous.

And he led the Panthers to Zero Playoffs until this year
His Careeer is off to a good a Start and he should only improve
But living here in NC I see him play almost every week and has a lot of Deficiencies to improve on before being in a “Elite Category”
If he keeps his head focused, he will achieve some great things as many young QB that play in today’s wide-open & pass happy offenses
He is not running as much because he doesn’t need to
They are another a good WR and some OL help away from being a very Good Offense, but they are not there yet.. Where he gas improved the most this Season is cutting down on his Turnovers, no he needs to cut down on taking sacks and holding the ball too long and getting passes out too late and he be a great one..

they don’t have to come out of your mouth, is just reading into your post, and it’s not to be taken literally, more of a metaphor. Here’s the point, the Eagles is the concern here, not Cam Newton or anybody else that does not pertain to the Eagles. You said the Eagles had 9 points during the first half, ok Carolina had what..10, wasn’t more than that because they only scored 17, with the last TD at the end of the game. Uhh no, the Eagles defense gave up 48, that’s a problem any week. How many teams score more than fourty on a weekly basis, not many. Three td’s and 1 pick can get it done if the defensesteps up. But with your blinders on you can’t see that.

Foles would have to have another Dallas 1 moment to lose that game. The reality is it’s going to come down to whose defense sucks the least – and well – if Romo coughs up the ball.

A shootout favors Romo – however Dallas D is SO bad that if they don’t put up at least 30 I’d be hella surprised.

Songs point maybe backup QBs with 2-5 career starts have lit up Dallas defense. So we cant use that bullshit Foles doesn’t have enough starts under his belt as a excuse. if Flynn, Cousins, McGloin etc are putting up points Foles damn well better.

I don’t think many people on here take issue or umbrage with that point dag, it’s just that he states his points with sarcasm and glee when Foles does not play well. That’s why we also know he’s not about the team…just his individual players…Must be fantasy related. I agree, Foles must perform well to beat any team, no excuses, however, if he puts up good numbers, 3 td’s and 1 int, the defense needs to do their part, not give up 48. The Dallas game. I think he was starry eyed because he grew up a cowbum fan. That may have screwedwith his psyche….next week, he has to ball out. No excuses for his performance.

I’ll say it for the millionth time. When Vick was in I cheered him….actually like Vick as a person. He’s a positive role model to me as far as how he comports himself, however, he wasn’t getting it done on the field..period. If Foles, or whom ever comes in and enhances the team experiences…I’m cheering them on as long as they get wins. To say…oh since Vick isn’t in the team won’t win, can’t run the ball, can’t get the ball down field to Deshawn is assinine, what was that based on …..bias, ignorance, That’s trolling . Last Sunday when I was on here you claimed I was no where to be found when the Eagles are winning (though I’d been on the board all before that) – I’m “no where to be found” after the loss UNTIL this weekend (exactly like I said I would be last Sunday) and now I’m disappearing and popping up?

Everyone had the bar set higher on the vet, you know cause he has like 10 seasons of experience. Why would you not except a vet with all those years of experience to play well on a consistent basis…

Its clear you still don’t understand the simple concept of expecting more from vets than guys with barely a full season of games. Funny cause its not rocket science but for some it still can be very difficult to comprehend for their brains.

Btw NOONE on this team is better than 28 Total Tds to 3 turnovers, 118.7. Vick/Barkley don’t have that type of game in them, its not even close even though you think a backup can somehow do the same with no evidence to back it up.

Phag! you are a clown…Your opinion about accountability is just that your opinion….There isn’t waiting for players to develop anymore…There’s too much talent nowadays…your thinking is “Old School” in my opinion! Foles played longer in college than Vick did…Both have played football all of their lives…You think Foles is going to give the excuses or use his youth as an excuse for his bad play….Bottom line Foles has played better than the majority of QB’s this season, you should expect nothing but good things from the kid!
my opinion, you are using his youth as a crutch in case he is not successful……

I would have some pretty good evidence had the defense possibly played a little better early on like they have been recently…you do realize the defense played excellent yesterday, especially in the 1st quarter, a big reason for the 21-0 lead, right?

its funny how you can’t comprehend that it takes a team effort to win games…you can’t comprehend that the defense playing the way they play helps the offense…
Evidence to back it up, would be defensive effort in the first game against WSH…

Even Chip Kelly said the Dallas Cowboys showed defensively what he expected but couldn’t understand why Foles wouldn’t pull the trigger.
Why didn’t Foles pull the trigger against Dallas Vinnie?

He threw for 80 freakin yards.

I would love to see Vick in mop up to get some reps knowing Chip may need to call his number if Foles go into one of his shells next week.

Vick mopped up: Gave a nice handoff to Bryce Brown.

In the big picture, it’s important to have an established starting QB, as this brings continuity and confidence to the offense…Foles is proving both his leadership ability and skill in that role.

But, you know, Vick is a unique talent, and I think it is important that the Eagles keep him sharp, because with Foles and Vick, the Eagles have the ability to attack a team with basically the same offense, but with a slightly different mode of attack that can catch defenses off guard.

I would be in favor of bringing Vick back, if he is willing to adjust to a new role, as two quality QBs are an absolute necessity in the NFL.

I like Matt Barkely, too…But he needs playing time to rach his potential and establish a rhythm, and I don’t know if he will get that with the Eagles.
