Notes From The Phillies’ 1-0 Loss To Atlanta

Cliff LeeThe Philadelphia Phillies lost their second straight game on Wednesday night, falling to the Atlanta Braves 1-0. Their record drops to 6-8.

  • Cliff Lee pitched a complete game, but took the loss due to the complete and utter lack of run support.
  • Lee allowed 11 hits and one walk. He struck out 13, and lowered his ERA to 4.13.
  • Lee allowed a solo homer to Evan Gattis in the fourth inning. Lee gave up two more singles following the homer, but then got a double-play and a ground out to get out of the inning.
  • The offense was ice cold last night. They managed just three hits and failed to work a single walk.
  • They allowed Atlanta starter Julio Tehran to throw a complete game shutout.
  • The Phillies didn’t get their first hit/base runner until the fifth inning when Ryan Howard began the frame with a single.
  • The offense had six 1-2-3 innings for the game.
  • No runner was able to reach scoring position.

Final Thoughts

The offense hasn’t turned in many terrible games this year, but tonight’s loss was completely inexcusable.

Cliff Lee did his part, throwing a complete game and only allowing one run, and the offense just wasn’t interested in playing competitive baseball.

The lazy approaches at the plate were reminiscent of the team’s worst efforts over the last two years. When this team has fallen into a hitting slump over the last few years, we’ve seen some terrible, painful baseball.
