Thoughts From Eagles-Giants

eagOffense

  • Mark Sanchez three for 292 yards and two touchdowns in his final start of the year. What we saw today from the veteran was more of what we’ve seen all year. He can come in and facilitate the offense, but can’t be leaned on to make plays when the team needs it most. Sanchez threw another interception, and could have easily thrown at least two more had the Giants’ defenders made a play on the ball.
  • LeSean McCoy finished his year with a 99-yard performance. What’s next for McCoy? The Eagles need cap room, and his contract is one that screams for a restructuring.
  • Jordan Matthews capped a solid rookie campaign with eight catches for 105 yards and a touchdown. Can’t wait to see what he can do in year two.
  • Chris Polk took seven carries for 38 yards and a touchdown that gave the Eagles the lead for good.
  • Nice to see Brent Celek find the endzone before the year was over. Celek’s a hard worker and a team player, it was fitting that he was given a chance to score before the year ended.
  • Jeremy Maclin logged just three catches for 49 yards in the finale. Its been a great year for Maclin, but defenses really limited the damage that he could do in the second half of year. Maclin had just two games in the final six where he had over 65 receiving yards, and scored just one touchdown in that stretch. I wouldn’t read too much into those numbers, however. I put a lot of that on the ineptitude of Sanchez before I put it on Maclin.
  • Jason Peters was beat all day by Jason Pierre-Paul.

Defense

  • How many interceptions did the Eagles drop today? I counted at least two by Malcolm Jenkins, and one by Cary Williams.
  • Jenkins has dropped at least half a dozen picks in the second half of the season. The former Saint has been a good signing for this team, and he desperately needs some help in the defensive backfield, but he’s left some big plays on the field.
  • The dropped pick by Williams was an absolute joke. It doesn’t get any easier than that, and Mr. Big Mouth/Penalty Machine couldn’t get it done.
  • Jaylen Watkins saw a lot of snaps for the first time all year, and had some good and bad moments. Watkins was able to break up a couple of passes, including a long one intended for Odell Beckham. However, Watkins also fell and left Beckham wide open for his 63-yard touchdown.
  • Nate Allen came down with an interception to seal the game. May he never put on Eagles’ green again.
  • Bennie Logan has quietly been one of this team’s more pleasant surprises. The nose tackle spot has not been one of this team’s problems.

Special Teams

  • James Casey came up with a blocked punt that Trey Burton was able to return for a touchdown that really gave the Eagles the momentum for good in this one. Its a shame that such a marvelous special teams unit was wasted on this team.

Final Thoughts

I’m so glad that Chip Kelly put a priority on winning this football game today.

I mean, who cares if LeSean McCoy narrowly avoided a serious knee injury at the end of the game, Chip’s got his second straight ten-win season!

And who cares about draft position? After all, its not like picking two-four spots apart makes much of difference. Its not like the Eagles missed out on guys like Haha Clinton-Dix and Brandin Cooks in last year’s draft by one or two picks, and had to make a panic move, trade back, and take a project that never saw the field in 2014. Nope, that certainly didn’t happen. Marcus Smith was great this year! Come on guys, Chip finished the year strong and got his second ten-win season!

With nothing to play for, Chip Kelly’s offense came back to life on their way to a win over the New York Giants. They sure came up painfully short against the Seattle Seahawks, Dallas Cowboys, and Washington Redskins when they had their season on the line, but Chip and company really set the tone for 2015 with a solid win over the G-Men, there are no meaningless games in this league, and as Chip made it a point to say after the game, its not easy to get ten wins in the National Football League, so hats off to Chip for getting it done, bravo coach!

If you can’t tell, this season has left me with an extremely bitter taste in my mouth.

The way things played out over this season brought back all kinds of unpleasant memories of the final years of the Reid era. There were a lot of mistakes, arrogance, and stubbornness that played a role in this team’s December implosion.

The job of the head coach is to put his team in the best possible position to win every week, and Kelly didn’t do that.

With a turnover-prone backup quarterback, Kelly leaned too heavily on the pass and didn’t use his running game nearly as much as he should have.

Several years ago, everyone and their brother knew that the Eagles were asking for trouble when they went into Green Bay with Greg Lewis as their primary punt returner. Lewis muffed multiple punts, and would turn out to be the difference in the game that the Eagles lost. This year, everyone and their brother knew that Bradley Fletcher needed to be benched after that Dallas game. Kelly and Billy Davis wouldn’t even consider a change, and Fletcher was burnt in several key spots by DeSean Jackson last week, playing a critical role in an Eagles loss.

During the final years of the Reid era, we picked up high draft picks that sat on the bench and gave the team nothing. This year we got Marcus Smith. But hey, maybe Jeffrey Lurie will absolve Howie Roseman and Kelly of any and all responsibility of the pick. Joe Banner hasn’t been around for a couple years, but maybe we can pin the blame on DeSean Jackson for the Smith pick.

In 2011, Reid put a priority on winning the final four meaningless games of the season to pad the team’s record and “finish strong”. We saw Kelly do the same thing today.

This team finishes 10-6, but I don’t believe they’re nearly as good as that record suggests.

The reality is that this team got off to 3-0 start by the skin of their teeth. A bounce or two the other way, and they could have easily been 1-2. If this team didn’t live off of special teams and defensive touchdowns in the first two months of the year, we could be looking at a radically different picture right now.

The Eagles played a much more difficult schedule this year than they did in 2013. I think this club is much closer to 8-8 or even 7-9 than they are 10-6.

There’s much work to be done in the off-season, and Kelly and the front office better not fool themselves into thinking they’re better than they actually are.

Laurie, davis n chip all said they know where they need to upgrade, that’s encouragimg considering I never heard that before, like i said in the other post, that tells me their going to spend big in free agency, I say that cause they don’t draft for need, if they claim they need to address certain areas then they have to do that in FA. I didn’t like hearing Laurie giving Howie an endorsement, I think something is going to happen if Gamble leaves, that’s Chips guy, Laurie was asked about the rift between Howie n chip n he didn’t deny their was one, all he said was he hopes they can work together, that’s not gonna work, if Gamble leaves expect Chip to follow within a season or two.

I for one am happy as fuck we didn’t lay down today against a division rival. Fuck laying down , nobody does that shit and no players want to. Bottom line is 10-6 is a very good record, we could’ve been better but who cares we weren’t winning a super bowl with Nate allen, Cary sconce Williams and Bradley shouldn’t be in the nfl fletcher

Fuck haha Clinton Dix and fuck that smurf cooks. Haha may be good but cooks isn’t shit and never will be. cooks wasn’t that good at all with Brees and its Brees who makes everyone look better. Saw haha get burned way more than make plays and I believe he got benched multiple times this year

Last give smith a pass – he may be good he may be great or he may be a bust. Our DC has 0 clue how to coach a d and identify talent smith could be a beast for all we know. He probably had a better year than the #4 pick dion Jordan did last year who the entire city was begging for us to take…

I can’t remember such an empty 10-6 as this one. Ray Rhodes went 10-6 his first 2 years, but they made the playoffs. This 10-6 feels more like Kotite’s last season here. As much as losing to the Saints last year in the playoffs hurt, at least we felt like we were moving in a great direction. Now, I have no idea what’s next. Who is our QB? How long will Chip stick around? Has the league figured out the play calling? Does our DC know what he is doing?

So much negativity. What happened to all of the “let’s give Chip 3 years, it’s a rebuilding time…”. Ridiculous some of the stuff that is posted here. Our #1 MIGHT be a bust, but our #2 Williams is certainly not. And, we can now get rid of Cooper. The draft always has issues, if it didn’t we’d have twice as many teams! We have a 3-headed running monster in Sproles, Polk and Shady. Mac had a great year, when all I heard early on was that he is heading down the gimp aisle. DeJean, may be a mistake, but he’s a cancer, and it’s obvious. How ’bout giving Chip a bit more credit in only his SECOND year. Quite possibly a few of mistakes are on him, but he does learn from them and still has one of the brightest minds in football. It’s obvious when many teams are copying his offensive strategy. Yea, we won a few we possibly should/could have lost, but we also lost a few we should/could have won – let’s not forget missed FG’s, injured starting QB, injured Defensive Captain. We are on the cusp, I feel very positive we WILL fix the secondary, and maybe a LB or two, plus a healthy QB for 2015. Everything else is either great, excellent or serviceable. MOST teams in the NFL wish they had our problems!

hey guys!

Lurie……

A year later on the final day of the season, a 34-26 win over the Giants Lurie sounded much different when asked about Foles.

“We didn’t go from Peyton to Luck, let’s put it that way,” Lurie said in the visiting locker room at MetLife Stadium, a reference to the Eagles’ not yet finding an heir apparent to five-time Pro Bowler Donovan McNabb.

It was not a resounding vote of confidence in the 25-year-old Foles.

Asked if he believes the Eagles have the quarterback on the roster now who can take the team to the Super Bowl, Lurie said:

“It remains to be seen. It’s very hard to answer that until you accomplish that. You can point to people that have accomplished it, you know, Aaron (Rodgers) and Tom (Brady) and Peyton (Manning) and Drew (Brees) and those guys, and that’s the elite of the NFL, and until you accomplish that you can’t say you have it.

The best part!

Lurie was asked how a team lands an elite quarterback capable of leading a Super Bowl run if they don’t draft high in the first round.

“It’s not easy,” he said. “You’ve got to really catch a break. You’ve got to find the players that are undervalued. That’s what happens, you know?

“Obviously with Aaron, Green Bay, they got an undervalued player at [No. 24]. That has to happen for a franchise to have that type of situation.”

Look at the reason for the Jets GM dismissal.

Idzik did a fine job cleaning up the salary cap mess he inherited from former G.M. Mike Tannenbaum, but he failed to address major needs at cornerback and wide receiver while sitting on ample cap space.

This dude would have received a bonus along with a new 10 year deal in Philadelphia.

A guy who goes into the season with ample cash to spend ignoring glaring holes on the football team?

What owner would fire that guy who allow that cash to roll over into coffers?

He would get the Maxwell award in Philly!

Songs, the question remains, who is this available mystery QB that is on par with Rodgers, Brady or Manning? Is he a free agent? In the draft? Is he in the Canadian or Arena League? Why is he still undiscovered, if he possesses so much ability. Remember, we don’t need a straight running QB, the whole pure read option, college offense ship has sailed. Defenses caught up to the R/O scheme and the QB’s that had one, maybe two successful years are now exposed as inadequate when forced to play from the pocket, or too banged-up to run anymore. Even the next wave of R/O QB’s showed very poorly when they played this season (think Manziel). Wilson (whom you always refer to and has been wildy successful) is an outlier. In addition to being a smart, heady and athletic QB- he throws more than he runs and is able to rely on a supremely physical RB in Lynch and the best D in all of football two years running. Listen, Nick Foles is not my son, brother or father, so I have no vested interest whether he starts or not, but as an Eagles fan, I think of first building a nasty defense (of which we already have the front 7 in tact) and riding with Foles. The thinking here is that he is neither as good as 27-2, nor is he as bad as he looked at times this year before his injury and having played behind a banged up O line. The O-line is not an excuse, its a fact. Mccoy had a poor year as well behind the same slop on the line. The real Foles is likely somewhere in the middle and with a nasty defense, I believe the birds can win it all. To continue to have a revolving door at QB in hopes that a HOFer drops in you lap (at pick 20) and ignore the other holes on this team is crazy. It’s perpetually being in rebuild mode until you uncover a once in a generation talent. I think the odds are better that the birds build a dominant defense before a HOF QB appears on the roster. Foles has a career winning record and 2-1 td/int ratio in his young career. If nothing else he is leader and players are quoted on the record as believing in him and prefering to catch the ball he throws. Have some patience.

Everz11..we are not talking about getting a QB on par with Rodgers, Brady, or Manning. We just need an upgrade from Foles/Sanchez who led the league in turnovers.
You cant ride with an injury-prone, QB who does have mobility, an average arm and struggles to read defenses.
If we want to win we need to upgrade…that does not mean getting Brady…it means getting someone better than Foles…

GUTS!!!!!

I’m Foles worse critic on here and will be honest in what I see.

Mike Vick with all his athletic ability would have not made it out of that game. A quarterback must stay on the field to win and it’s evident Foles is resilient.

Now, he still leaves too many wide open TD’s on the field, now if he can hit those wide open TD’s there will be no argument him being titled “the franchise QB”.

Yes, I said it.

Again Songs with no understanding of the difference between the salary cap and real wages paid to players.

I am no Lurie apologist, but this “he’s cheap – hoarding $$” business is bullshit.

Eagles have been in the top 10 in payroll to players ever single year since he has been the owner.

That they have pretend “cap” money is just because they have an intelligent accounting team who know how to manipulate that fake $.

The $20 million in “space” is an illusion. It is an accounting $ only.

Lurie does not “save” nor “bank” it nor let it “roll into his coffers”….because it IS NOT REAL $$.

And there are no technicalities on a bet it’s either a win or a loss. Clearly I stated injuries would not count as a benching and he agreed to those terms. He could’ve said the bet would be void if he had a season ending injury if he wanted to but didn’t. That’s on him.

Song it’s fiscal insanity to start lauding a qb who you already have under contract ,coming off an injury..in so many, ways,it’s a perfect scenario, for the organization..resign studs on defense…cut bait with garbage …adress by spending big on creating a solid defense front and back..special teams already fixed, and offensively put another wide out opposite Maclin(who we all agree ) is a must sign..the 3rd year of chip ,will bear witness to his abilities as a coach to add pieces and empower his defense ….the glass is half full..

The biggest thing that concerns me about this Chip Kelky WR
Is his lack of insight on the Defensive side of the ball and putting all his trust and the future success in mediocre DC Billy Davis
The Eagles QB situation is not what’s holding this Team
Back, it’s the talent Level and Schemes of this Defense and as I sit here
Dec 29th, 2014, I have little confidence that Billy Davis is going to get this Defense into the Top Half of the NFL let alone a Championship Level
Defense which is reminiscent of AR’s Final Years post Jimmy Johnson’s death..
The QB & Offense are not holding this Franchise back,
It’s the Defense,Defense,Defense!!!
This needs to be addressed this Off-Season
Or Kelly’s Tenure won’t last beyond his 5 Year Contract

Ya’ll still arguing about Foles and Sanchez?

Only on GCobb.

Foles may and I stress the MAY start next year by default. But he’s not getting another contract to stay here. If they can fidn a guy they are happy with this offense then Foles will be the backup next year.

It’s not really anymore complicated than that.

I don’t think Foles is going to have the job handed over to him next year, as he did this year, but I don’t think they will be moving up in the draft to take a QB.

I see the Eagles making Foles compete for the job again next year – with whoever….

By the way – you boys forgot to congratulate me for winning the GCobb fantasy football league.

Good Job Irish on the FF League..
I was middle on the Pack and never had
Any steady QB Play all Year long..
I missed the Draft and got all RB/WR with
No QB/TE or Defenses and struggle all Season
Just to compete.. I did pick up a few Pkayers who shined
RB Forsett & CJ Anderson but my QB’s
Were Alex Smith & RG3, then I got Kyke Orton? Derek Carr,
Cousins, Glennon & Even Sanchez..
Ha .. There’s always next Year ..

8 head coaching hires in 2013 including Chip Kelly in the NFL.
Browns Rob Chudzinski and Bears Marc Trestman have been terminated so far.
Mike McCoy ( Chargers), Andy Reid ( Chiefs) Chip Kelly made playoffs last season but all 3 missed playoffs in 2014. Bruce Arians made playoffs this season but his team is sinking like an anchor entering playoffs. Doug Marone and Gus Bradley still have yet to make the playoffs.

Songs my Brady, Manning, rodgers scenario was because that was who you said Laurie was speaking about in his post season comments and implying that Laurie didnt endorse Foles going forward because he wasn’t one of those HOF QB’s. My point is, those types of QB’s are one every 10 years and often luck factors into it getting one. Why stay in a perpetual rebuild mode, hoping the next guy is the “one” until he isn’t Rodgers, or Brady or Manning and clamor for another QB, when all the while it doesn’t matter who the QB is when your secondary cant cover me. You speak of a QB better than Foles, but who is that guy? All the one’s you’ve clamored for on this blog are horrendous and thankfully we didnt get them in lieu of Foles or we’d be in reverse going into year three.

Denny, you know as this year ends so disappointingly, I wonder if Kelly isn’t the issue… Could he be the offensive version of Rex Ryan who only really cares about the offensive side of the ball??? They needed defensive help last year too and we failed at accomplishing true repair… I really could see this guy going receiver, RB, QB in the draft / free agency before D help… Yeah maybe he’ll grab 1 or 2 D players but I really do wonder… Another thing… Did KELLY screw FOLES up this year? I thought I heard or read that they wanted Foles to take MORE CHANCES so this year comes along and he’s throwing bad balls??? DAMN, go back to who he was last year… He lost a tough coach or something? Damn go get another tough guy to push / develop him… Point is… Could it be Kelly??? Rhu-Rho…

I thought he did a nice job considering the slop that is fletcher and Allen…
‘A championship caliber DC’ what the F does that mean? As of right now he hasn’t won a championship so of course not… Was Jim Johnson? It is total bullshit to speak in absolutes like that. I would say 30 of 32 nfl head coaches are championship caliber if things break their way, if a player or two bust out as phenoms. Belicheat was a dismal failure, john harbaugh a special teams coach… It takes lightning in a bottle… F.ing Todd Bowles was brutal in philly and now he is the best thing since sliced bread… You cannot speak in absolutes in this business

A couple on my Short List I think could be good fits and have experience in the “3-4” Scheme ‘are the Following

1) Vic Fangio – DC of 49ers (who is still under Contract
With 49ers thru 2015 Season as entire Staff is
Only Harbaugh has left so far..
2) Eric Mangini – TE Coach of 49ers but former DC
Of Patriots,Jets & Browns
3) Ken Norton Jr – LB Coach of Seattle
4) Mike Trgovac – DL Coach of Packers
5) Ed Donatell – Secondary Coach still under Contract
With the 49ers

With Eagles having DL Coach Jerry Azz
I believe a DC with more Secondary Experience is Pass Coverage Schemes
And Teach would be a good fit with Jerry Azz

Eagles DC Billy Davis was previously a LB’s
Position Coachvwgich is where is specialty lies..
Eagles Jerry Azz has done a nice Job up front
And I would like to see a Coach who specializes with the back end to complement the front 7

Listen to the foles’ press conference

He went first

He was asked by some reporter that never wore a sweaty jock strap, like songs, koolbreeze and Ts

Why he thinks he will be the starter next year without the endorsement of his coach, owner. His response is classic and bitch slaps the reporter and these race baiters

The other thing of note was how tactfully he answered the question whether the eagles would have made the playoffs had he been the qb the entire season

Again he silenced the reporters eith his brains and tact

Do not be fooled by the race baiters

KOOLBREEZE…READ WHAT JOHNNY MANZIEL’S COACH THINKS OF HIS BEHAVIOR:

Browns coach Mike Pettine didn’t put Manziel’s transgression in the same category as the actions of Gordon and Justin Gilbert (who was deactivated Sunday after showing up late for a team meeting), but he said that quarterbacks are seen differently.

“I’m not writing off his behavior as acceptable — it is unacceptable,” Pettine said. “Especially, we said that we hold the quarterback to a higher standard than everybody else. That just comes with the territory, the position. Has his behavior been disappointing? Absolutely.

“We’re going to take our time here. We’re going to step away from the emotion of it all, get some time off, come back. We’ll have all the players written up and evaluated, and in a much less emotional environment, evaluate the roster, talk about each position, what changes need to be made.”

It’s pretty much official: Johnny Manziel’s first season in the NFL is a dumpster fire. Being a first-round pick affords additional rope, but Jimmy Haslam’s comments Sunday tell us the organization is extremely displeased with the behavior of some of their highest-profile players and could be set to take drastic measures.

If Manziel doesn’t shape up, his Browns career could be over in a blink.

This is not just about culture. His behavior is directly interfering with his performance…secondly the Browns brand. You think Chip would stand for this? Manziel’s horrific play only makes it worse!!! Manziel has “it” though huh?…LOL.
Read what Skip Bayless said about Manziel today. Bayless has been an ardent supporter of Manziel, even he has seen enough of this clown bust of a prospect!!!

Have a cigar ..firstly I’ve had close exposure to bill Davis being here in Az during his time here ..I’ll explain why I said what I said ,and measure my response..there is no disagreements between you and I ,that the players make the coach…I really believe his lack of recognition to the obvious mismatch ,singling up fletcher firstly against Green Bay on Jordan ,then Dezz game 2 ,desean ,and his defense of his moves ,showed me that he was guilty of the exact same stubbornness as a cardinal…also his desire not to mess with his nickel and dime packages ,even though a guy like Boykin might have been a better fit outside ,given the chance …I know size matters…Carroll wasn’t the answer yesterday ,I get that ,but the field seemed a little more spread out ,when they weren’t attacking fletcher constantly…what make a championship DC ? A top ten ranking ..he’s never sniffed one across the board ..points allowed and x plays are his weakness..they were in AZ and they are in philly…I’ll give him credit for fixing the front 7 ,but yesterday they had zero sacks vs eli…I usually allow a coach 3 or 4 drafts before evaluating them ,however to me bill Davis is mediocre …at best …now why don’t you try to convince me ,he did a good job..I’m willing to listen

Davis stays because… He has not only made the front 7 mean for the first time in a billion games… He also did so with a bunch of guys he didn’t order. We have to let it play out. We have to give him time. If they actually spend on some Cbs and he still looks like this… Then it’s time to give him the boot. 1 more year. Graham has improved. Cox looks great. Move on from Allen and Fletch. Sign 2cbs.. Draft like 7 and see what we get. 1 more year.

Desean danced on our corpse ..it embarrassed the whole organization…please don’t try to tell me he will change ..he’s like sanchez ..his stat line is abysmal

A stupid WR embarrassed a billion dollar brand? Do you live in the real world… Desean is insignificant… Team finished what 5-11 or something? They were in shambles, put together a good game while they were going down in flames.. So the F what ? Why would anyone care what he says?

Hey desert….had to take some time off after that implosion of our season. Good points. I think that Davis has done some good and some bad things this year with the defense, but you touched on something that I have believed for a while. I really believe that Coach Azz is a far bigger part of everything done on the defensive side. Obviously he has got his defensive line playing at a much higher level this year, but from what have heard he has a much bigger part to running the overall defense. I think that Davis will survive, but look for a bigger role for Coach Azz.

Desean dancing and kicking his eagle dance ? Before a change was made ? Do you really believe fletch was injured Tuesday? Who does that when Rodgers is the qb..bill Davis that’s whom…when dezz called the birds cheap after the thanksgiving beat down ,he promised revenge ..so what does Bill Davis do ..he employs the same strategy as Green Bay to stop Murray and watches fletcher get lit up like a Xmas tree. After that sobering beat down in Washington he singles up fletcher again vs Djax..c’mon man …it’s indefensible …and yes his strategy or lack of allowed the eagles the most X plays in the whole nfl…he sullied the brand …he exited the playoffs …as did every sanchez pick …they both sucked ass…and I’m home watching Dallas ..
