Losing Trust, Not Faith In Chip And Howie

HowieRoseman1I’ve listened to every interview given by Chip and Howie since the season ended.  I’ve read, and re-read the responses to questions asked by the media.  I’ve allowed time to pass since Sunday, a game in which winning felt more insulting than beneficial.  The reward is a later draft pick, shutting the door on the 2014 season in which no playoff games will be played.

I feel no closure and a bit hesitant with my trust going into the off-season.  First things first, how the Eagles handle their money is extremely important as we approach the off-season.   The Eagles need to look at areas where they can shed cap space and spend their money in free agency.

Yes, some of their own guys will need new deals, but I don’t want to hear how the Eagles are in the top three with how much cap space they have heading into the 2015 season.  It’s been several little splash signings over the last two seasons, a collection of “next” tier players.  Time for the check books to write the fat contracts, now is the time to make some noise and get “Pro Bowl” talent; especially in the defensive secondary.

The draft; it’s almost as if the majority of players selected by the Eagles in 2014 will merge with the 2015 class for playing time.   The Eagles can’t screw this draft up like they did last year and only have contribution from a single player taken.

Secondary, offensive line and quarterback are the first three things that come to mind for needs in the draft.  The only “project” that should be taken is at the quarterback position.   We need proven guys with our other selections.

I don’t see Sanchez returning, so the Eagles will sign some veteran in free agency, and they need to land a top cornerback, safety and a linebacker who has experience playing inside and outside in the 3-4 scheme.

It’s really difficult to “move on” from the season when the playoffs have yet to begin.  We can only watch to see how far away the Eagles truly are from being at the level of the yet to be crowned Super Bowl Champion.

Whatever label was previously given to “year three” of the Chip Kelly era, throw it away.  It has no usage as year two ended in a way that nobody predicted.

It’s not a move or two; or one play here or there that sums up the season.   How to fix this team, a list of wants and needs, one that will continue to grow and grow as we look back on a season that simply “collapsed” and it’s quite messy to begin cleaning.

I have faith that Chip and Howie can get the job done, but my trust is very fragile.   I’m going to be a bit more hesitant to part with it moving forward.

Kind of a silly argument. Jeff when AR was fired at 4-12 if I told you the next coach would go 10-6,10-6 and make the playoffs one of the two years you would have done back flips . Yes the three crushing losses put a crap taste in our mouth… As it turns out the wash loss meant nothing we could have been 11-5 and missed the playoffs. .

round 1 – marcus smith – maybe a bust, maybe not. obviously billy is clueless. not to mention he wasnt taking coles, grahams or barwins job his rookie year. let the kid develop. 50% maybe more 1st round picks dont work out… give it some time. also see fletcher cox, he was once dubbed a bust…maybe a bust, maybe a winning pic, maybe a losing pic

round 2 – jordan matthews – great pick, great production, great, great, great. winning pick

round 3- Josh Huff – showed a little, made tons of boneheaded plays but also showed some potential.. will be eagles #3 wr. winning pick

round 4 – Jaylen Watkins. maybe a bust, maybe a win or maybe a loss. who knows at this point

round 5 – Taylor Hart. Dline depth. who cares. 5th round picks should and do take a while to develop if they ever do

round 5 – Ed Reynolds, who cares, we never get safeties right. who knows what he is. but probably poop

round 7 Beau Allen. rotational player… looked good in preseason and didnt look like slop when he played in the regular season

way i see it we got 2 NFL starters for sure. one of which Matthews looks like and has demonstrated he will be an above average nfl player

so what was so bad about it? 2 of 7 right is not bad at all for an nfl draft. not to mention another 2 could pan out. whats the problem? what specifically should they have done differently? dont tell me they shouldve found more impact guys, tell me who you thought at the time not now?

don’t forget Trey Burton who is an absolute STUD on special teams and will probably become a good backup TE along with being a great special teamer. He could have been worth a 5th round pick.

he and alex have zero similarities. wrong about his arm strength its above average. his touch is probably below average. and taking 12 -15 guys over him is fair, i would probably take more than that but he is nothing like alex smith man

you say he is asked to make quick reads and get the ball out. are you sure about that? i ask because more times than not i see slow developing plays down field as opposed to quick reads and out (like they do with alex in kc)

im not trying to give you hell jeff, im just trying to understand these points

They are both White, that’s about where the similarities end…
Alex Smith is more mobile, likes to throw on the run and is a 25 Yard and In Passer relying on accuracy and timing
Foles is a pure pocket passer, has a stronger arm,
Longer release, is not very mobile nor throws very well
When on the move and must have his mechanics down
And feet under him To throw accurate passes..
Not a good comparison between these 2 QB sills set or
styles at all..

Alex Smith is a better QB than Nick Foles…their arm strength is about the same and Alex is waaaaaaay more mobile than Foles and he reads defenses better too.
The reason Nick holds the ball too long is because he struggles with reading the coverages
Lets face it Jeff…Nick just doesn’t fit this offense. If you are going to go with Nick Foles, Chip Kelly needs to redesign the offense. Cut out all of the spread formation stuff, get rid of the read option, get a fullback, get a smash mouth running game and use the play-action pass to give Foles some easy reads…employ more of the west coast offense with a short passing game…

You cant have both…you cant have a slow, immobile QB who cant read defenses running a spread-read option offense

I agree with the FA spending, Howie has to get over the dream team season n move on, the man seems like he never got over it, I’d get rid of Cole n Graham, with that money I’d go get Worlids from the Steelers, I know that wanted him last year, I doubt the Steelers franchise him again, next I go after Maxwell from Seattle, they make those two moves I wouldnt care how they fill the rest of the roster.

The problem with 10-6 this year is that they were a better team last year, Foles was clicking and we all knew that we were a couple of pieces in the 2ndary away from making a deep run. Those same issues are here a year later. Will they figure it out this year? Why didnt they see what we all witnessed last year?

I think the First thing the Eagles should do is to Release the Following
Players that are currently under Contract. This is no tine for Kelly & Company
To feel “Sentimental” about Veteran Players
Cutting these 6 Players does not mean that they can’t resign them
Later in the Off-Season if things in Free-Agency
Don’t go well

1) OLB Trent Cole (Due $11 Million,$14 Million & $12.5 Million
The next 3 Years)
2) CB Cary Williams (Due $9 Million in 2015)
3) Guard Todd Herremans (Due $6.33 Million the next 2 Seasons)
4) TE James Casey (Due $3.25 Million on 2015)
5) ILB DeMeco Ryans (Due $6.75 Million in 2015)
(This is toughest Cut, but an Achilles Injury is very difficult to come back
For an aging LB)

This will save Approx $35 Million to go along
With the $20 they are already under the Cap
Giving them some $55 Million to work with to upgrade
The Roster..

If Graham bolts in Free-Agency as I expect
Then bring back Trent Cole on a inexpensive
1-2 Year Deal
If Ryans fully recovers, then offer him am inexpensive
1-2 Year Deal but this likely won’t be known to
May/June so a Replacement at ILB must be planned and executed by Draft/Free-Agency

The other 3 Players (C Williams,T Herremans
& J Casey) just thank them for their time and let them pursue
Other Teams

Then Eagles should Re-Sign 3-4 of their own Players
(Maclin, Thornton & Polk)

Eagles need to inform their other Free-Agents to test the Market
And let them walk (Fletcher,Allen,Sanchez, Casey Matthews,
Brad Smith & Jeff Maehl)

In Free Agency, Eagles need to pursue
The Following Positions/Players

CB – Chris Culliver, Davon House,Walt Thurmond,
Byron Maxwell, Phillip Adams, Buster Skrine)
Who are under 27 Years of Age

Safety – Da’Norris Searcy or S Gilchrist

ILB – J Whilhoite or Dan Skuda

OLB – J Hughes or O Brien Schofield

OL – James Carpenter or Clint Boling

Back-Up QB – Jake Locker or Christian Ponder or Casey Keenum

Then Draft Secondary,OLB/DE,OL & WR

I do not list Free-Agents like OLB Justin Houston, CB Revis,
Safety Devin McCourtey, WR Randall Cobb
For I see no possible way their own Current Teams
Don’t resign them and will get very big deals
Eagles need 5 Starting Players on Defense
And signing one of these big names blows too much $$
For 1 Player considering the Eagles have Maclin,Thornton
To sign, plus start thing about extensions for Cox,Kendrick’s
& Foles..

Paul, there is an absolute certain they all could head into free agency, and not be resigned by their current teams.

Houston, and the Chiefs have been trying to work out a long term deal for over a year now, and he has rejected every offer they’ve put on the table – labeling it as insulting. Their only chance of signing him is with a 1 year Franchise Tag

– and it will go up significantly every year, while also having to resign Dontari Poe, Alex Smith, and desirable Free Agents. They could decide that it may be cheaper to let him walk – COULD – So him not being re-signed is absolutely possible…

J Whilhoite , Dan Skuda, J Hughes, O Brien Schofield, Jake Locker, Christian Ponder, and Casey Keenum – Nobody wants those bums. Aren’t you tired of the mediocrity of talent – because that’s what you just suggested

Why haven’t you listed James Carpenter as someone that will be re-signed by his team? Because that’s just as much of a possibility as Justin Houston. I wouldn’t mind him, but I’m more sure he won’t be available.

Seahawks can’t sign all of their Free-Agents
That why Carpenter & Schofield will be hit the Market
Seahawks locked up KJ Wright, C Avril and now will
Focus on QB Wilson, possibly M Lynch and still want to
Add a WR in Free-Agency and then also have Maxwell
To consider..
Chiefs will release Tambi Hali and use that $$
For J Houston who is better, younger and in his prime
So AR is not going to let him go.
The Eagles are not going to Sign 4-5 All-Pro Types at every Position
Of need for their Defense for that’s not what they do
They will get a good CB, a quality Safety & ILB and a Pass-Rushing OLB
To replace Cole and depending what happens with Graham
They invested a Top Pick in MSII just last year and I don’t see them giving up on him after 1 Season..
I think they Draft an ILB,Safety & CB to be groomed for a Season
All early in Draft.. 49ers Whilhoite had a very strong season replacing the injured Bowman and Skuta was also playing well for Willis until he got hurt and Rookie Borland took over, in fact 49ers probably cut Willis
Due to Borlands play making Willis a free-agent to grab for a year or two
To replace Ryans

So what you’re saying is that the Chiefs front office is smarter than the Seahawks, in that they will sign an important YOUNG, cog to their Defense despite the need to sign other important pieces to the team, and the Seahawks are going to forsake Offensive Line continuity and allow a YOUNG 26 year old important cog to their Offensive Line to walk, because they have other important pieces to sign………because Paulman says they will….Let’s see how this turns out……

Whilhoite , Dan Skuda, J Hughes, O Brien Schofield, Jake Locker, Christian Ponder, and Casey Keenum all suck ass…no more mediocrity please.

I am aware that Skuta played over his head in some games, but that’s not good enough for me. Williams, and Fletcher did the same thing last year, and how’d that turn out the next year?? Do you still want them???

Marcus Smith can’t play in the NFL. What you saw of him in College does not translate to the Pros…Period. If you want to continue to rationalize, like I heard you do with Jake Locker, then I respect your stance, but don’t expect me to be so gullible, when reality has already smacked us in the face.

The Browns Owner, is smart. He knows when he’s made a mistake, and isn’t embarrassed to admit it. Johnny Manziel, will not be in Cleveland very long, although he was just drafted – That’s what Cognizant GM’s do – it is what it is sometimes…

Open competition for the job! The way the coach and the owner have talked about Foles lets you know that he is not going to be just handed the job.
They are going to bring in a vet and draft a QB…
However, they need to shore up the secondary in free agency..cant depend on rookies as starting CB’s too risky!

Sean Mannion plays for Oregon State.

and Brissett hasn’t announced anything yet, and would be ranked behind only Mariota, and Winston, if he decided to forgo his senior season in the 2015 draft. That’s what I read. Meaning no one you could suggest would have a better upside…..

That Kid you like from USC, and Petty from Baylor – Can’t touch him – 6-4 235 4.62 40 – Rocket arm, makes all the throws – Best QB draft option for the Eagles, and Chip Kelly’s System.

So, and to build around, but Cole,Herremans & Ryans are all on the downside Of their Careers and are on the wrong side on 30 and not really part of the future long term success of the Eagles.
LB Ryans, I don’t believe can return to NFL form after having 2 Knee Surgeries and now a torn Achilles play LB where agility, quickness and stop and starting Is crucial to your play..
One of the big problems of AR is that he held onto

Being reported that the 2014 draft is the catalyst for the hammer being dropped. Marcus Smith and these Oregon players appear to be a Chip/Gamble production and the balance of power in personnel selection is given back to Howie. Chip should coach in my opinion. The fan is speculating that Chip and Gamble was in the get rid of DeSean camp, and Howie was more so pro DeSean. Howie is using the fact that the Eagles did not make the playoffs with Chip/Gamble draft and getting rid of DJax hurting the team may have had a role in this decision. It’s all speculation and entertaining, but, where there is smoke there is fire. Eagles is a soap opera. As The eagles Fly. Jeesh!

Stevo, I think Gamble was probably more of a yes man to Chip ..focusing and backing up Pac 12 players and personnel selection. No thanks. I’ll take Howie. I/m not interested in A team full of Oregon Ducks and Pac 12 guys. This team is to finesse.

Marcus Smith is pretty finesse. All I know is I remember Chip standing next to MSII at his pro day just like he did at J. Mathews. The Eagles are more finesse though, for whatever reason. No bone crushing hitting players. MSII was finesse in college.

the same situation keeps repeating itself. Whether Tom Modrak, John Wooten, Tom Heckert, Joe Banner, Andy Reid, Howie Roseman, Ryan Grigson, Chip Kelly or Tom Gamble. Obviously Jeff Lurie gains some kind of enjoyment living within and/or creating this type of office strife. After the 5th time this has happened I’m not going to blame the participates ( Gamble, Roseman or Kelly) To me this has Jeff Lurie’s fingerprints all over it.

This is what happens ,when new first year coaches are given the “genius” prodigy tag..the inevitable ,power struggle within the organization, occurs…as soon as the honeymoon is over…it’s not unlike your new obedient bride…tell me now wether she’s at your beckon call….”.not tonight .”…this will sort itself out ,but don’t be fooled..I stated unequivocally ,that something, happened that pivoted this team from 9-3 to a season of gloom..we as Eagle fans deserve an explanation..Jeffrey Lurie in his state of the franchise actually gave it to us.. ,read the tea leaves….he lauded howie roseman…he said what a great executive he is and reaffirmed his status as GM …he told you he was miffed at turnovers ,red zone inefficiency and X plays of 50 yards or more …this is a business ,based upon performance…your football team was undisciplined ,yet you needed expel bad ass characters? You took 16 games to bench fletcher …you had no ingenuity in the red zone all season long..your ducks quaked on the opening kickoff..vs Dallas…you sat an obvious weapon week after week in ertz ,(chips explanation) it was a matchup we were looking to exploit vs Washington..you gave the rock on the goal line 3 times to Polk ,and he scored all three times..yet in San Fran and arizona ..where was that coach? You allowed single high safety coverage week after week and had fletcher on an island …torched more than a Vietnamese village..don’t think Jeffrey hasn’t made a list of these things …gamble is a salvo across the bow..but it’s just the beginning of the purge that’s about to begin..there is a pattern within this organization ..of dysfunctional management …Jeffrey you are the CFO …there is only one thing worse than repeating organizational transgressions …acceptance of such practice as business as usual…this boy George culture club is singing off key …

You are absolutely right deserteagle!! Real Eagle fans have the unmitigated right to moan, bitch, complain, whine, and make demands from this ownership who has raked in major profits due to our loyalty to this team.

We deserve that moment to savor in a Super Bowl Win…

Yet there are some on here who have a strange, childlike acceptance of the: OWNER….
It is as if God has given Lurie this privileged position over us and we should just be grateful for allowing us the privilege of watch his football team, the joy of buying those jerseys, and the comfort of the Linc…where ticket prices will go up…again.

Bullshit

We have the unmitigated right to demand that the Owner bring a Super Bowl to town. As fans we have the power to bring pressure on this Owner and hold his feet to the fire of public displeasure at the dismal failure of the team. I’m not giving up my rights as a fan to demand a Super Bowl win….fans should let Lurie know that while he may own the team and make the bucks..he wont maintain much popularity in this town if he doesn’t deliver the big one…he will go down in the same ignominy of previous Owners..Tose the drunk guy, Braman…the guy in France …disgraced, failed Owners who never got it done……

The next 48-72 Hours are Critical if Chip Kelly
Is to stay as HC..
He spent a few minutes on Monday’s PC stating how “Tom Gamble
Is One if the Best Football Minds he’s ever been around”
And then to get Fired 48 Hours later is a slap in the face
Of Kelly …
Then When you hear Chip Kelly’s response on that same PC
On how his relationship amid rumors about a rift
With GM Roseman ” His reply was a terse one word answer with a stiff lip
“Good”, then when asked a follow up Question came
About Roseman, Kelly replied “He’s a great Capoligist”

This is about all you need to know about the current
Relationship between Chip & Howie,
Obviously Chip does not respect or Value Howies ability to evaluate
And recruit Talent and basically see’s him as a Contract/Salary Cap/Numbers type of guy so this Relationship is set up
for Failure..
I am leaning that Chip Kelly will turn in Resignation
On Friday 1/2/2015 for this is not the arrangement he signed up for
And he and Lurie will meet with Smolenski and they will
Agree to part ways with the term “Philosophical Differences”
That we just saw play out in San Francisco
The Chip Kelly ERA is Over …

Paulman’s Short List of the Next HC

1) Todd Bowles – DC of Arizona
2) Jack Del Rio – DC of Denver

Which is why this move was stupid you invest a great deal of money into Kelly so let him build the type of program he wants, and let him be comfortable with the player selection the whole nine. Now every decision every pick every comment will be over analyzed was this Kelly’s guy or Roseman’s guy? Was Kelly purposely not playing Smith because he was Howie’s pick? You don’t like Djax but that move was the beginning of the acrimony between Howie and Chip you have to see that.

I don’t pretend to understand the dynamics in the nova care. I know by nature it’s a business filled with egos, when you look at San Fran and how that spun out of control…maybe chip builds this thing to a point and bolts, who knows. I also read Howie was pro Desean. Apparently Kelly wanted to get rid of Jackson and Gamble co-signed on that. They both (Gamble and Kelly) wanted to re-sign Cooper. Looking at what Cooper did this season, and looking at what Jackson did was part of the argument Howie used to get Gamble out. Howie was not on board with this move. Ultimately, at least in Lurie’s eyes Howie was right. Once again, DJax skill set was not replaced by Kelly’s moves…not in Howie’s eyes anyway….and it appears Lurie agrees enough to back Howie.

Skill set: Probowl player selected for both WR and ST’s kickoff duty. You don’t see that, you have not been watching. Most 40 plus catches in NFL…with mediocre QBing.

PAC 12 Guy—-Kelly

Another conference, flip a coin.

daggolden

January 1, 2015 5:50 am

The Eagles’ firing of VP of Player Personnel Tom Gamble has really opened up a can of worms. More power for Howie Roseman, less for Chip Kelly? According to a report from NJ.com’s Mark Eckel, Howie Roseman wasn’t too happy with the comments Chip Kelly made about him during the head coach’s final press conference of the season on Monday.

“On Monday, Kelly called Gamble “an outstanding football man” and said he did a “great job.” During that same press conference, Kelly said Roseman was good at handling the salary cap.

According to people inside the organization those quotes “infuriated” Roseman. The general manager — who has never been a scout, played the game or coached — has worked to overcome the image of being solely a salary-cap guy.

Roseman believes he has earned his job as general manager and the club’s top talent evaluator. Instead, his head coach called him a glorified cap guy. Two days later, Roseman, with support from owner Jeffrey Lurie, exacted his revenge.”

Here was the exact quote by Kelly:

“No, for me to stand there and say, ‘I think paragraph five of his contract should mean this, instead of this.’ That’s not my forte, not my strength. I’m not going to delve into that and say, ‘I think his signing bonus should be this, but let’s retroactive that and only make it for injury in the third and fourth year.’ That’s not my strength. I understand it, but that’s really what [Howie Roseman] does an outstanding job of that. I think since I’ve been here one of the attractive things about this job, there are not cap issues. You don’t look at it and go, ‘Oh, my God. We’re going to have to cut 12 players because we’re going to be $40 million over the cap.’ [Roseman] does an outstanding job of that. That’s his training.”

It’s hard to believe Roseman would fire Gamble, who apparently had a close relationship with Kelly, based on that quote alone, but it’s clear that there has been tension brewing in the Eagles front office. Things are getting ugly. Gamble even had to be escorted out of the building on Tuesday night.

Here’s another quote from another one of Eckel’s sources:

“There is no way Chip Kelly is happy about this. What the (heck) is going on there? How does Tom lose out in that battle? That place is dysfunctional.””

Chip Kelly signed a five year $32.5 million dollar contract. 6.5 million a year 2013-2017. Free agent in 2018.

Means little to Kelly for he can the same amount of $$$
To Coach anywhere else in the NFL or a big to line College Program
Is he chooses to leave now or after 2015 Season
The larger issue is that Chip Kelly took this
Eagles Job for wanting to have total Control
Over the Player Personnel & Roster Management
Functions of the Club which he no longer has
GM Roseman has closed the Circle and there are
2 other Scouting Employees who were close to Gamble about to
Get the boot also.. Kelly has a big ego, as we all know,
But he is not going to remain Coach of the Eagles simply as
“the Coach” for this in not what he signed up for
Or wants…
A indication to watch this Soring is how many of these
“college Workout days” will Chip personally be attending..
Remember the last 2 Years, Kelly was flying all over the Country
Attending these Workouts.. This Spring, if we see less of Kelky out there
And more of Roseman attending these Workouts
Then we know who is really calling the shots..
My guess it will mostly be Roseman out on the Trail

I like Howie Roseman and respect him as a GM.
I like Chip Kelly and respect him as a coach.
Jeff Lurie? He is a buffoon. He created this nonsense system and every time he gets in front of a microphone he double downs on his desire to sell the nonsense as a good thing. He has 3 steering wheels on one automobile.

Word is Top Agents from around the NFL
Who represent Houston,Revis, Maxwell,
Etc,etc sent a letter to Howie Roseman that their Clients have
No Interest in playing for the Philadelphia Eagles for there is too much Turmoil
A Coach & Organization that tarnishes their Players
(D-Jax) and renege’s on Contracts when the big $$
Are to kick in (See Trent Cole)
Buckle up Eagle Fans for this will be a difficult
Ride ahead for the Eagles who have taken another Hit
On how they treat Players,Staff and Executives
This is not Good any way you look at it..

WHAT THE FUCK???????????

Sources tell the Philadelphia Inquirer that Eagles GM Howie Roseman has had conversations about the Jets’ general manager vacancy.
There’s a power struggle going on in Philly, as the Inquirer says a “bitterness” has developed between Roseman and coach Chip Kelly. That was revealed Wednesday as VP of player personnel Tom Gamble, a Kelly guy, was fired. So Roseman has apparently (and surprisingly) won out for now, making the Jets conversations moot.
