How Much Should Be Made Of The Front Office Turmoil?

ChipKelly3What is the state of the Philadelphia Eagles?  For the second straight season, a name that “matters” is walking past the exit sign, leaving the media and fan base speculating what is going on behind the scenes.  Desean Jackson was Chip’s call; the Gamble move is credited to Howie, so now the score is tied up at one apiece?

If the worry for the future of the franchise wasn’t already up in the air due to questionable signings in free agency and talent evaluation in the draft, we have this latest roadblock to get past moving into the offseason.

Howie has been working to make his presence known that even though he didn’t grow up in football, his intelligence and people skills can get the job done with the best of them.  Chip Kelly is polar-opposite, a guy who eats and breathes football, determined to prove that his success at the college level can translate to the professional level.   Howie is a people pleaser, likes to add to his portfolio as many contacts as possible, ready to shake any hand and smile for a picture when the opportunity presents itself.  Chip would love it if he didn’t have to talk to anyone but his players and coaching staff.

Chip will make you laugh with his arrogance towards questions asked by reporters.   Howie is looking to make you laugh with his charm and sensibility.  There is nothing wrong with having different personalities leading a NFL team; that is until small disagreements lead to fall outs like the one we are currently witnessing.

What happens when Chip wants to pay a guy to stay but Howie thinks their cap number is too big, and the money should be used elsewhere?  What if Howie wants to draft for a position of need, but Chip likes a guy because of the school he played for and attributes he views as “special?”   Will Howie allow Chip or will Chip overrule Howie with wanting to take a college prospect two or three rounds before his projected draft position?

Not only does this type of move by the Eagles with firing Gamble alter the feelings and perspectives by those in-house, but pending free agents players and agents of those players are going to make their own judgment calls with this matter.

Do you fear that Chip has possibly one year left to get things right with the Eagles?  That if it came to Howie or Chip, the coach is going to be the one to go?

I dont think it’s going to work like that, Chip is going to say, I want that guy n it will be Howies job to make it work, that’s his job as of Friday, he has no authority whatsoever to tell Chip no.

That’s right Andrew… Howie says we have $134 mil to spend – Chip can spend it however he wants.

Better question Irish, do you think Chip will trust anything that comes out of Howie’s mouth?

Probably not Big, but it’s not rocket science. I think Howie will be obligated to lay things out in a way that Chip understands how much he can spend.

We’ll see how well Chip works with Roster Management
when dealing with the following 5 Players

1) Trent Cole (Due $11 Million in 2015)
2) Cary Williams (Due $9 Million)
3) Todd Herremans (Due $6.33 Million)
4) James Casey (Due $3.25 Million)
5) DeMeco Ryans (Due $6.75 Million)

If Chip brings all 5 Players back at their Current Salaries,
Then Eagles are F’d with the notion of improving Roster much in Free-Agency

If Chip cuts all of them and uses the $35 Million
Saved to upgrade the Secondary & OL and WR
Then we know he’s in this for the long-haul

The 30-45 Days will be telling about the Future of Chip Kelly
& the Direction of the Franchise

The Eagles with $20 Million under the Cap
Are not going to be able to Re-Sign Maclin,
Then Sign Free-Agents like Houston,Iupati,Maxwell,McCourtey
Etc, and extend long-term Deals to Cox,Kendrick’s,
and possibly Foles unless the 5 Player’s Contracts,
I listed above are dealt with ….

according to overthecapDOTcom all your numbers are wrong. plus if you cut them at their current salaries that doesnt necessarily mean your cap number will be reduced by those salaries…

i get your point but its not 35 mill in salaries or reduced cap…

The $35 Million Reduced in 2015 Salaries of those 5 Players I listed would reduce the Salary Cap by $28.5 Million
Here is Details as listed by “EaglesSalaryCap.Com”
for 2015 Salaries and Cap Hit’s if Released
T Cole – Due $11.625 Salary – Cap Hit is $3.2 Million
D Ryans – Due $6.8 Million Salary – No Cap Hit if Released
C Williams – Due $8.166 Million Salary – Cap Hit is $1.66 Million
T Herremans – Due $5.2 Million – Cap Hit is $2.4 Million
J Casey – Due $4 Million – No Cap Hit if Released

Total Salaries of the 5 Players ($35.8 Million)
Total of 5 Players Cap Hit if Released ($7.3 Million)
Total Savings off of 2015 Salary Cap ($28.5 Million)

It’s time for the Eagles to get younger, stronger and faster and not time to be sentimental.. Maybe offer T Cole a 1 Year $3 Million Deal and see if he wants to Stay at that drastic of a reduction. The Rest of them need to be Released

paul, per spotrac, which is an direct salary cap site, for all sports, that is updated daily, this is the salaries owed, & dead money cap hits if they are cut.

Shady- $11.95M Salary cap- $4.4M dead $ if cut.
Cole- $11.625M Salary cap- $3.2M dead $ if cut.
Ryans- $6.9M Salary cap- $0 dead $ if cut.
Casey- $4M Salary cap- $0 dead $.
Celek- $4.8M Salary cap- $0 dead $.
Herremans- $5.2M Salary cap- $2.4M dead $.
Williams- $8.166M Salary cap- $1.666M dead $.
Curry- $1.076M- $224G.
So you are correct. All could, & should be gone, or restructured to team friendly contracts.

Every player Paul named is under contract for next year – If Chip brings all 5 Players back under their current contract the Eagles salary total is increased by $7.7 million over last years.

Out of those players Paul named only one player, Trent Cole, stands to receive a significant salary increase next season – $5.1 million….

Cole is the only player of those 5 who’s future will be determined based on salary. The others will be judged solely on performance.

James Casey is not getting 4 million next year, my guess is Maclin’s expected raise comes from James Casey’s contract.

the media hasn’t yet vilified Howie, they are still too scared to cross him. If Howie truly was benched this off season then the local journalists would be preparing the termination stories of Howie right hand guys in the personnel department. Howie has to have many best buds there that are no longer needed with tears in their eyes. Until I start to read Roseman loyalist left for this job or Roseman’s hand picked scout is “escorted ” from the building. Lurie just placated all of us to get the negative spot light off himself.

why would Chip keep Howie’s scouts? Why haven’t Howie’s scouts been identified by the media? How hard is it to connect dots to them. Those Howie guys should be scared out of their minds right now networking. That is a story that was beginning to be written before the Flip Flop Lurie mid week decision about Gamble and Chips scouting allies. You have to figure most of the personnel department were Howie’s boys.

drafttek mock draft eagles picks

1st round Danny Shelton – DT – Washington
Year 2 of the transition to a 3-4 defense was a mixed bag for the Eagles. The team was fairly stout against the run but dreadful in pass coverage, finishing 31st in the league. As with any team, a fierce pass rush can make a good secondary great, or in the Eagles’ case, a bad secondary so-so. While the Eagles finished the year with 49 sacks, just 5 behind the league-leading Bills, the pass rush was inconsistent. Danny Shelton brings a blend of athleticism and raw power that could bring a boost to any defense. Shelton’s 9 sacks and 16.5 tackles for loss are impressive for an interior lineman, and rank him among the country’s best. At 6’1 and 327 lbs, Shelton is a classic 3-4 Nose Tackle, and has the potential to team with Fletcher Cox to elevate the Eagles defensive line to an elite level.

2nd round Kevin Johnson CB from Wake Forest
– The Eagles may be (should be?) moving on from starters Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher. However, who will take their spots in 2015? Nolan Carroll’s a veteran but is simply a depth/special teams player; Jaylen Watkins is young and inexperienced (just 31 snaps in ’14 according to Pro Football Focus). It’s likely Roseman and Kelly will look towards Free Agency to fill one spot but a CB should be selected early in the draft as well. Johnson played in 47 games (41 starts) in 4 seasons for Wake Forest, amassing 123 tackles, 8 TFLs, 35 PBUs, and 7 INTs. He was a lone bright spot for the Demon Deacons recently, actually keeping them in games.

Round 3 – Jake Ryan – ILB – Michigan
Round 4 Deontay Greenberry – 6’3″ WR – Houston
Round 5 Zadarius Smith OLB – Kentucky

I love DT Danny Shelton’s Upside and think he could be a Stud at the NFL Level..At 6-2 335lbs and quick hands, feet and naturally strong, he has a NFL Body from Day 1, High Motor an a Nasty Disposition…
Put him at NT and flanked by Cox & Logan in their base 3-4 Package could be the Foundation of a Solid DL for years to come…

2nd Rounder Kevin Johnson is also a Nice pick — He’s got great leaping ability, plays the ball in the air as well as anyone in College and has natural length at 6-1′ – The Knock on him is that he only goes about 175-178lbs and will need to get stronger and is not known as a very good or Physical Tackler… He Excells in Pass Coverage Skills but is not very good in stopping the Run and Tackling which is why he’s probably looked at as a 2nd Round Prospect instead of a 1st…

walter football

1st Philadelphia Eagles: Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State
I’ve had several Eagle fans ask me if trading up for Marcus Mariota is a possibility. It’s not. The Buccaneers actually wanted to move up to No. 1 before they had the first pick because they’re desperate for a franchise quarterback, so they’re not going to suddenly surrender the top choice. From what I’ve gathered, I don’t even think three first-rounders would get it done for Philadelphia. Thus, if the Buccaneers choose Mariota over Jameis Winston, it’s not happening.

Here’s a more realistic option. The Eagles have a terrible group of corners, and Chip Kelly likes tall defenders like Trae Waynes.

2nd Philadelphia Eagles: Gerod Holliman, S, Louisville
Nate Allen has been a huge liability, as he was responsible for Arizona’s game-winning touchdown in the middle of the season. The Eagles are in desperate need of an upgrade at safety.

3rd – Philadelphia Eagles: Jake Fisher, OT, Oregon
Another Oregon player for Chip Kelly. This one can upgrade Todd Herremans at right guard and then move to tackle once Jason Peters retires.

It appears that the Eagles will receive the 14th selection in the 4th round as compensation for the Bryce Brown trade from Buffalo. (originally san frans – stevie johnson trade- sent to eagles )
