I’m in Indianapolis for the NFL Combine and I got a close look at the wide receivers in this year’s draft and there are some good ones. There’s great size and speed amongst this group and it’s probably the most talented position again this year like it was a year ago.
Chip Kelly loves to create matchup problems for the opposing defense and nothing is better than having big, fast wide outs, who can not only outrun their defenders, but also physically dominate them. Remember he values big wide receivers, who can use to easily block smaller defensive backs and open up the running game.
Kevin White of West Virginia was the most outstanding wide receiver from a purely size and speed stand point. He’s 6’3″ 215 pounds and was able to run a 4.35 in the 40 yard dash. White has a great set of hands, but performed in a spread offense so he will need to learn a professional passing system.
Georgia wide receiver Chris Conley who is 6’2″ 213 pounds ran a 4.35. His vertical leap was 45 inches and his standing broad jump was 11 feet, which are both near records for the Combine.
DeVante Parker from Louisville stands 6’3″ and weighs 209 pounds and ran a 4.45.
Dorial Green-Beckham of Nebraska and formerly of Missouri stands 6’5″ and weighs 237. He ran a 4.49 forty-yard dash. Green-Beckham didn’t play last year because he was suspended from Missouri, so he transferred to Nebraska. It isn’t likely that Kelly will go anywhere near because he doesn’t bother with guys who have character problems.
Darren Waller of Georgia Tech stands 6’6″ weighs 238. He ran a 4.46 in his forty-yard dash.
Jaelen Strong of Arizona State stands 6’2″ weighs 217 pounds and ran a 4.44.
Amari Cooper of Alabama might be the most polished wide receiver in this draft. He stands 6’1″ and weighs 211 pounds and ran a 4.42. Cooper has great hands and runs precise routes, plus he played in a Pro Style offense for the Crimson Tide. He’ll be able to come in and play right away.
Devin Smith of Ohio State stands 6′ foot even and weighs 196 ran a 4.42. He’s shown himself to be a great deep threat for the nation’s National Champions.
Nelson Agholor of USC 6.0′ and 198 pounds ran a 4.42, Agholor is a great route runner with outstanding hands. He’s NFL ready because he played in a Pro style offense and he runs precise routes.
For just pure speed, little guys J.J. Nelson of Alabama-Birmingham ran a 4.28 and Phillip Dorsett ran a 4.33
Dres Anderson of Utah, Breshad Perriman of Central Florida and Cam Worthy of East Carolina didn’t run yesterday because they’re recovering from injuries. They’ve also all got great size and speed.
I agree g these receivers are big and fast and chip will have a lot of options
Chris Conley and Darren Waller are guys I would look at in the 3rd round. I would not be opposed to taking a receiver in the first if the right one for me was available. Jaelen Strong ran a lot faster than I anticipated.
Yea jalen was almost a 4 4
I like that kid Jaelen Strong…but we don’t an all pro. Just a skill set… Give me Devin Smith or similar. Plus if Maclin prices himself out I think we go after Thomas.
Maclin is my boy…. I’ve been propping him for a while but he’s not worth more than Jordy Nelson money.
I disagree…we can always look to upgrade..if a wr is best player available at 20 grab him.
I think Demarius gets tagged if an agreement is not reached.
If he’s the best player available by far I have no problem with that. I just think at 20 there will be better defensive players than a WR.
We will see.
EHL you are sitting at 20…best defensive and offensive player on the board…lets just say for numbers wise both rated a 90….you going offense or defense?
I am going defense.
Defensively..I love Marcus Peters..but I do not know if I can trust him. Talent wise he is a top ten guy…he will be there at twenty, I have to give it serious consideration.
I don’t see him there at 20. I think he’s first DB off board goes before 15.
No way anyone takes him before us his chaacter concerns are bad enough to push him into 2nd rd
Bruh..Aqib Talib shot a guy or at one lol…
We just had a Super Bowl with two defense built around the secondary…
Would be awesome if he was there…don’t think it’s happening.
I have to concur with z on On Peters. I think he will be taken at end of first early second. Character issues will push him down.
And that’s why the damn NFL has us by the balls lol we will watch the draft just for one guy lol
I hope so in all honestly…I prefer drafting Peters than paying Maxwell
Seriously the nfl has got us hooked i love football too much
I’m hoping he really impresses…moves up the board, thus dropping the Mich State DB to us.
Forget all this talk about best available at 20 regardless of what side of the ball, we have to take best available in the secondary, safety of corner, if the Arizona, Dallas, Washington games doesn’t convince anyone of that then nothing will.
What if Peters, Waynes, Collins are all of board..it is a possibility..no other dbacks are first round worthy. Teams get in trouble drafting for need. Look at MSII. You can not panic. Seattle secondary all mid rounders except Earl Thomas. BPA.
Y. Mid rounders on an extensive Steroid and PED program. (allegedly).
Amazing how all their “gem” mid-rounders became incredible pro-bowlers able to leap over 6’5″ Olinemen,
But I digress…..
It was clearly Seattle’s amazing scouting department……
My boy vic dominating the combine 4.5 forty 35 bench reps 41 inch verticle 10 7 broad jump he is my pick if available at 20
Doriel Green Beckham went to Oklahoma, not Nebraska G….
EHL are talking about Collins the s or cb?
I am referring to Alabama strong safety Landon Collins. I do not see LSU CB Jaelen Collins as a first round talent….more so a second rounder.
Oh ok. I think you would have to take the safety. And take a corner in the second along with a free agent. Just my theory.
It just depends on who is available when they pick. I would take Marcus Peters or Trae Waynes over Landon Collins, then take Ole Miss Safety Cody Prewitt in the second. But that is just me.
How about they just address cb and safety in fa so when draft rolls around we can just take best player available.
EHL your boy jaelen Collins might sneak up in the first rd. I didn’t think so at first but I do now. Now that I’m thinking about it I might take peters before Collins.
eagleman, the question for J Collins is why he only started so few games. Something is wrong there.
Sounds like he broke some Team Rules or maybe had some School Issues, it is not uncommon for LSU to rotate Players all up and down their Line-up.. But to not Play in 3-4 Games when Healthy means something was going on….
Some see the bigger Collins (6-1 205lbs) as a better Free-Safety in the NFL as opposed to a CB kind of like Malcolm Jenkins is who came up and was Drafted as a CB from Ohio State a few Years ago..
EHL. that is the mystery question. No is saying. He started the first 3 or 4 was a healthy no start for the middle games and then started the last 3 or 4. Crazy. Something happened
