Yesterday was the first time we got the chance to see the new Tim Tebow and it was an up and down performance by the former Heisman Trophy winner. In fairness to him, he was trying to learn a new offense, at the same time he was trying to utilize his new passing technique, while being accurate with his throws. It wasn’t pretty, but Tebow is tough mentally and he will continue to work.
“I think you just go out and you compete and you try to earn whatever you can. It’s just about competing, trying to get better every day and that’s the goal,” Tebow said. “I’ve done some similar stuff in the past. I really enjoy it. It’s an offense that really keeps defenses on their heels in a lot of different ways – with tempo, with formations, playing fast. There’s a lot of different ways that you can take advantage of certain things in this offense.”
His technique looked decent when he was going through the individual skills part of practice, when Tebow, Sam Bradford, Mark Sanchez and Matt Barkley were all doing passing drills. He didn’t have to think about the receivers’ routes during that part of practice, this was his chance to concentrate on the throwing technique aspect of the game.
When he had to run plays in the 7-on-7 period, which meant knowing which routes all the receivers were running, he struggled. Tebow held onto the ball, then started rolling out and eventually tucked it under his arm and ran with it. This happened three consecutive plays in a row and it seemed that Tebow held onto the football for five minutes rather five seconds. It’s not going to be an easy process for him to take his game up to another level.
Tebow is going to need all of his drive, passion and faith to overcome this challenge, but as you would expect from him, the guy was all positive after the workout.
“It was very helpful. When you get an opportunity to really just dig deep and train to get better, it’s always helpful,” Tebow said. “You figure out what you want to work on and work on it every single day and really have a process, not just one day or one week, but a process of going through it.”
Although, the former University of Florida star struggled in the passing game, he looked great while running the zone-read part of the offense, where he got the chance to do what he did in college. There are certain parts of Chip Kelly’s offense that Tebow fits like a glove.
“I really like him”, Tebow said regarding Kelly. “He’s an innovator. Wherever he’s been, he’s changed how the game has been played in a lot of different ways,” Tebow said. “It’s fun to play for someone like that.”
I think Tebow does realize that this might his last chance to be a NFL quarterback. If there is an offense in the league, which Tebow fits into, it’s Chip Kelly’s offense and I think the quarterback is thrilled to be here.
“Sometimes when things get taken away, you don’t realize how much fun it is to come out here and play this game,” Tebow said. “You can’t play it forever, so I’m going to enjoy it.”
He’s going to get a great chance to make this team in training camp and in preseason. If Tebow can do a better job of executing his throwing techniques, he’s going to be part of the Eagles roster. It just makes sense.
Having Tebow on the roster will force opposing defensive coordinators to spend 10 or 15 minutes of valuable practice time working on him keeping the ball after fakes and running with it. He would be very tough to stop on short yardage and goalline.
