Can you take that Byron Maxwell Super Bowl Prediction, Seriously?

ByronMaxwell26When the Eagles signed former Seattle Seahawks cornerback Byron Maxwell, they thought they were just getting somebody to man the cornerback position for them.  They had no idea they were also getting a player who could predict the future.

During an interview with Sports Illustrated website MMQB.com., Maxwell predicted that the Eagles were going to win the Super Bowl.  He was asked what kind of presence he would bring to the Eagles.

“Experience.  Because I’ve been there before.  Knowing what it’s like if we go that far.  Because we’re gonna go that far this year — meaning the playoffs and the Super Bowl. We’re gonna go that far. Hopefully that experience I already had, I can help them.”

“You can take that as a guarantee,” Maxwell said. “That’s just me believing in my team and the product we’re going to put out there on the field. I really do believe that. I have no choice but to think that way.”

Maxwell has gone to two straight Super Bowls as a Seahawk, so maybe he thinks he can bring some of his Seattle teammates over to the Eagles when the season starts.  I hope he knows that Russell Wilson won’t be on his team this year, nor will Richard Sherman nor the rest of the NFL’s best defense.  I can appreciate Maxwell being positive, but there’s no way anybody can take that prediction seriously, when you don’t know who the Eagles starting quarterback is going to be.  The offensive line has some question marks at both guard positions at the moment and half of the starters in the defensive secondary are undecided.

Maxwell has never been through a practice in shoulder pads with the Eagles, yet he thinks he knows the team well enough to predict a Super Bowl appearance.  He doesn’t know the Eagles offensive personnel very well and he doesn’t know the Eagles defensive personnel very well. I hope he’s right and they go to the Super Bowl, but I’m not taking his prediction seriously.

I did get the chance to talk to Maxwell as he walked off the Nova Care Complex practice field on Thursday.  Overall he was pleased with last week’s workouts and he is looking forward to developing the team’s secondary.

“It feels good”, Maxwell told me as he walked off the Nova Care Complex practice field on Thursday.   “We’re making head way.  We’re going to be pretty good out there.”

“We want to press”, the cornerback said in response to a question about the differences in the Eagles and Seahawks coverages.  “We play a lot of quarters.  We play a little bit of everything here.”

“I’m really just trying to get my technique back.  You go months without being on the field and you lose your technique.  If you don’t use it you lose it.  I really want to get my technique back and get in shape.”
