You read that the title of this article correctly. It’s gotten personal between Eagles Pro Bowl left guard Evan Mathis and team head coach and GM Chip Kelly. It’s very simple, Mathis feels the Birds took a million dollar salary increase off the board and he’s really right they did.
The Eagles dd it because the front office has changed. Howie Roseman was running things when that offer was made, but he’s no longer running the show. Now, I don’t think this is going to get worked out.
Here’s how ProFootballTalk.com lays it all out very clearly.
“On the surface, the impression is that Mathis wants more money, but the team won’t give it to him. At a deeper level, Mathis believes the truth is that the team previously offered to adjust his contract, but that it now won’t.
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Mathis contends that the Eagles previously offered to increase the salary paid to Mathis by roughly $1 million per year, from 2014 through 2016. Mathis opted not to accept it in 2014, but he was interested in accepting it in 2015. But the Eagles, per the source, told Mathis that the offer was no longer available because Howie Roseman, who had made the offer, was no longer the General Manager.”
Kelly doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy, who is going to give in to Mathis and the left guard seems to holding his own. Right now, I don’t think Mathis is going to play for the Birds this season.
How many people give up $5,000,000? If another team doesn’t trade for him, (doubtful) what are his options? Question is, does Chip want a disgruntled player in his locker room? If Chip wants him back, I’m sure they can work something out.
Mathis is a stooge. He rejected the offer in 2014…and then comes back and says that he would like to now accept the offer….after he was injured last year and is another year older.

Word is that the KC Chiefs are interested and offering their 6th Round Pick in 2016 , the 49ers,Falcons and Colts are also interested but at a Reduced Salary $$$ which likely won’t work.. Many Teams around the NFL do not have $5.5 Million allocated for a Guard this late in the Off-Season..
What happened last Year under the Previous Front Office is water under the bridge at this point but Kelly is not going to have this Distraction around his Team over the Summer I can tell you that..

I think the issue is that when Djax was cut there was Maclin in the wings. McCoy gone and its Alonzo, Murray and Matthews coming in.

You know Vinnie, you are the only guy that ever mentions David Molk. Hell, I bet you think about him more than his mother. I have yet to see a single report saying that David Molk is doing anything these OTA’s, and he certainly is not Mathis’s backup.
I agree that it would be better if they can get past this shit and have Mathis back at practice, but if the All-Pro playing next to him does not really seem to care one way or the other, I tend to believe that we will be alright however it works out.
Mathis and Rosenhaus have overplayed their hand. He is already at a high salary for a guard of his age. The stupidly turned down the $3million raise ($1 mill each of the next 3 years), and then act surprised when the offer is gone after an injury and another year of age / playing. Just plain stupid, and his teammates see that also. Remember, along with T.O. many years ago, Rosenhaus is also the agent for McCoy along with Mathis. He clearly does not understand how Kelly runs his team. Unfortunate for the team and his clients.

I don’t know where you are getting your information, but Allen Barbre has been running the 1st team left guard reps. Peter’s and Kelly have both made comments about how well he is playing in the OTA’s (grain of salt needed, there is no contact during the OTA’s).
Barbre & Tobin have been getting Reps at both LG & RG
Word is that Dennis Kelly has stepped up at taking more and more Reps at RG
While Barbre is taking most Reps at LG with Tobin to be their Back-Ups
Andrew Gardner appears to be the 3rd OT and taking Reps at LT & RT
And the likely backup at OT if anything were to happen…

Panthers have an LT problem. If that gets fixed (Oher is not the answer IMO) then they are a legit contender.

Fans may act like it is “life or death” for them, but Kelly is the one who’s job is on the line. He is very aware of that fact, and he makes roster moves that he believes are in the best interest of forming a winning team.
Truth is, that with all of the talented players that Kelly cut, that team never won a playoff game. Those players were the core of a team that went 4-12, and basically quit on Reid.
Do I wish that Kelly could get these players to accept his program and be better teammates? Hell yes. But in the end, it is Kelly who is the one with the most to lose. I will wait to see this team actually play a game before I declare that we rush the NovaCare and remove Kelly at the end of a pitchfork.

Whats happened this Off-Season really should have happened last Off-Season but Chip was handcuffed a bit for its very difficult to make major changes with a Team coming off a 10-6 NFC East Crown Season and a Home Playoff Game in 2013, which was unexpected when he took over which really shows you how bad the NFC East was…
Now in Year #3 he is finally molding the Roster in his Likeness
I expect it will be Year #4 & #5 when they start Winning again and get back into the Playoffs.. 2015 Season will be a Step Back

The 2013 Teams had more Talent then a lame-duck 2012 Season of a 4-12 Team.. make no mistake about that… If I hear he took a 4-12 Team to the Playoffs one more time.. An offense with Vick,McCoy, D-Jax,Maclin,Celek, etc,etc,… The 2012 Team went 4-12 because they gave up and collectively as a Team were all looking out for themselves knowing that AR and his Staff were all goners but was a true reflection of the Offensive Talent that was on board which is probably why Chip Kelly took the JOb to begin with after initially turning it down…

Vick hasn’t been a starter since, he took a third round project QB and made history, Jackson was part of a shitty team, celek wasn’t looking out for himself, he adapted and became a poster boy Kelly player. He took a RB who did not fit his system and made him a rushing champ….
And the same Chip Kelly who Hired DC Billy Davis and Converted the Defense to a 3-4 Scheme, which they had little talent to be effective at it… Have had the worst Defensive Secondary when combining the 2013 & 2014 Stats on Big Plays given up thru the Air, Penalties, Passing TD’s given up, Yardage, Red-Zone Defense, etc, etc …
Yup! And won a shitload of games. Converting to a 3-4 even using 4-3 players is a testament. I know optimism is a four letter word to you and failure is what you want (and you may get it) but the guy (who I did not want) has done pretty well. and out of Eagles 20 Wins the last Two Seasons, How many of those were against Good Teams… You know, like Playoff Teams ?
Fraud , the year Kelly was hired I believe that Ariens, Bradley and McCoy was hired as well as somebody already fired from the browns … Ariens is solid took over a team with fitz and Palmer and some solid D pieces… Did a nice job, McCoy had a QB and made playoffs one of two years…. They all had talent, they’ve all made changes and Kelly has more than held his own.
As a point of reference, Belicheat and Walsh won a COMBINED 21 GAMES in their first two years. Both were unorthodox and consider ‘out there’– I was not happy with the kelly hiring but at this point I have no choice as a fan to hope he is the next big thing. chuck noll won 6 games his first 2 years, parcells 11– I don’t know exactly how many superbowls those 4 (walsh, cheat, parcells and noll) won– but I think its like 14 or so… our guy has done better in his first two years than all of them.
