Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, reports that the Sixers have traded for a young outside shooter to go with the young big men. He is second-year guard Nik Stauskus, who was the eighth-pick in last year’s NBA Draft and from all reports the young man can shoot.
Wojnarowski also reports that the Sixers have acquired forwards Jason Thompson, who is from South Jersey and Carl Landry from the Sacramento Kings for the rights to some overseas players. This is a salary dump by the Kings, so they can make a move in free agency.
Back to Stauskus, he is the player the Sixers wanted and he could be part of their future. You can see how a spot up sniper like this former Michigan Wolverine could thrive on a team with low power player like Jahlil Okafor.
In his rookie year, Stauskus wasn’t overly impressive. He averaged only 4.4 points, while shooting 36.5 percent from the field and he shot 32.2 percent from three-point range. He averaged playing 15.4 minutes per game.
Stauskas stinks as a starter. He’s been overrated by a lot of people since he entered the draft. He is a classic example of a good College Player, who is exposed as deficient on the NBA level; because he was never that good to begin with….
I think he would be a nice off the bench as a 3 point specialist, if he could improve other aspects of his game…..Jordan McCrae, should be our starting SG; He can shoot, play Defense, and create his own shot. The Sixers have no one better to start at that position….No one
The best part of this deal is the Future 1st rounders – which they won’t get next year because it’s top 10 protected, but will become more realistic in the future……Good trade by Hinke in my opinion…..
The Sixers can use Stauskas much the same way that Hawks use Kyle Korver. On a team that he would have to create his own shot he would struggle, but he would be valuable on this team with how they get open in transition and he could get transition 3s. If Okafor or Embiid provide the double he can thrive in spot ups.
Defensively he stinks but he can be made serviceable to a point. Jordan McRae has not proven he is a starter either or even an NBA player. He has potential but he is eerily similar to Wroten both volume guys.
The Sixers can get by with Wroten Stauskus backcourt with Ish Smith as a backup.
Carl Landry will be a hot commodity come trade time if they dont work out a buyout with him before hand. Jason Thompson may be a little bit harder to move.
The Kings will not make the playoffs and IMO Karl and Cousins will come to a head forcing one out. Either way it will be lottery time with the Kings.
Hinkie did an great job on this one. I would still like them to go after another wing that can stretch the floor.
Ij, what you’re saying is reasonable. But last Summer when we talked, I stated, that in my opinion, that Jordan McCrae was the best player for the Sixers, even over Noel.
Stauskas will no doubt get every opportunity to be the starter, but at some point of time, he will be replaced by McCrae – because he is much better defender, and Offensively more well rounded for the NBA.
Nik Stauskas, to me is a – potential -3 point specialist -maybe, who will be given every opportunity to start, but at some point of time will be replaced by Jordan McCrae – who is more well rounded overall offensively, and more importantly Defensively – which is were I definitely agree with you that Stauskas stinks undeniably.
My thinking on him is he is one of those overblown College Players who isn’t on the same level professionally….
The draft picks can really turn this franchise around – they have to – what do you think??
Excuse me, I made the same statement twice; I walked away from my desk, and didn’t proof read…
I will look past McRae over Noel so we dont go down the rabbit hole together 🙂
Im a fan of McRae but to pencil him in as anything right now is a stretch. What I am hoping that McRae does provide more scoring punch off the bench and help us move Tony Wroten. I am not a fan of Wroten at all…for a guy that attacks the rim he is abysmal at the FT line and his decision making is terrible. He is a volume scorer but on a young team he is an ill fit. I may be wrong and biased but thats how I view him. I am hoping McRae can provide his skillset but better.
As for Stauskas again his 3pt shooting ability and size is coveted and can be worked in the offense effectively. Kyle Korver is a prime example of that. The way the league is setup now his skill set can transition into any smart coaches offense and he can be a starter because he is a compliment to your best player(in this case Okafor) if you brought him off the bench with players that dont draw a double team then that is where he would struggle. Creating his own shot off the dribble is not his forte.
If you watched this team last year(not saying didnt) Stauskas skillset fit perfectly. Transition threes and offensive rebounding kicks where there. When teams finally caught up to Covington there were no other shooters to worry about. That is where a player like Stauskus would fit in.
Remember he doesnt have to be a god send. But a solid starting role player at his size and skill level would be awesome.
As far as those draft picks I have been saying this since day one……the more you have the better you end up.
With Monta Ellis gone the Kings are about to overpay for Wes Matthews and Rajon Rondo…
I absolutely love what Hinkie did.
Okay nothing wrong with that, I thought you were down on McCrae…
Kyle Korver was a much more prolific College scorer at Creighton than Stauskas was at Michigan, for more than the one year, Stauskas was getting props.
Korver has a role and that maybe Stauskas potential ceiling, but I don’t think Stauskas will be anywhere near that level consistently. I really think some are totally exaggerating what he will realistically will be able to do, based on their personal bias for him.
I do agree that if he can give us something – that’s good – but I’m not holding my breath.
I am excited about the rookies that we could possibly get in the draft next year. Can you imagine what this team would be like if we got the overall #1 pick, and an additional top 5 lottery pick??….along with two more 1st round draft picks??
Overall, I agree this was a great trade.
I think this was a good pickup. Stauskas struggled last season, but that does not mean he cannot bounce back. We need a shooter desperately. Right now we do not have anyone in the back court that can shoot. This is not a complete solution, however it is a start in the right direction.
I would make a run at Ty Lawson if available now…..I just looked at his contract and it would be up in 2017 and although he is a pain in the ass at times I doubt he would destroy his opportunity at big time money in 2017 with the cap at an estimated 109million.
