There’s no question that Eagles head coach Chip Kelly is ahead of the NFL with his hurry-up offense. His offense has been amongst the best in the league despite mediocre quarterback play, but can Kelly win a Super Bowl during this stretch of three or four years.
Since his arrival in the NFL, Kelly has added west coast offense concepts to his passing game thanks to offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur and they have taken the Eagles offense to the next level.
Kelly’s understanding of spacing and his ability to force defenders into can’t win situations has put him in position to offensively dominate the league. His offense has helped quarterback Nick Foles have a record-setting season with 27 touchdown passes and only 2 interceptions. Quarterbacks Michael Vick and Mark Sanchez each had the best seasons of their career in Kelly’s hurry up scheme.
That brings us to Sam Bradford, who has a skill set that is better than any of the other fore-mentioned quarterbacks. Can he elevate Kelly’s system and make it unstoppable to the point where he leads the Birds to a Super Bowl? The rest of the league is watching eagerly.
Despite the success of the Eagles passing game, Kelly’s offense is really built around the running game. He’s made the read option and the zone option popular plays in the league and they helped LeSean McCoy lead the league in rushing. Now you add DeMarco Murray, Ryan Mathews and Darren Sproles to that backfield and it might be an assault on the record books.
Yes the record books will have to acknowledge Chip Kelly’s time in the NFL, but will it lead to a Super Bowl title.
Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Tom Landry was ahead of the NFL for a good while and that’s why he led the Cowboys to 20-consecutive winning seasons, five Super Bowl appearances and two Super Bowl titles. Landry designed the 4-3 defense and the flex defense.
He was one of the first to utilize a combination of the spread and the shot gun offense on third down. Landry was also one of the first to change defensive personnel on third down with the nickel defense.
Despite all of those brilliant ideas, it was Hall of Famer Roger Staubach, who made Landry a champion.
I remember facing the west coast offense in college when USC played the Bill Walsh-coached Stanford Cardinals. He brought his west coast offense or short passing game concepts to the NFL and it helped the 49ers win four Super Bowls under his leadership.
Walsh was brilliant, but how much would have done were it not for Hall of Famer Joe Montana.
I got an up-close look at the 46-defense when I played for the Eagles under Buddy Ryan. For a few years, when Buddy was the Bears defensive coordinator, he was ahead of the NFL with his wisely-conceived attacking concept. The blitz happy scheme utilized specific blitzes against specific offensive formations. Ryan would study each formation and chart what each offense did out of them. He would then design specific blitzes or defenses to stop the specific plays that the opposing team ran out of those defenses.
During that stretch when he was ahead of the NFL, the 1985 Bears defense almost single-handedly paved the way for Chicago to march to a Super Bowl title.
Ryan was defensive wizard, but were it not for Hall of Famers like Mike Singletary, Dan Hampton and Richard Dent, that defense would have had no title.
There have been other head coaches and coordinators, who have had a strategic advantages on the rest of the league for stretches, but you also need the players. You must have the strategy and the players to get the job done.
It get’s down to same basic fundamentals no matter what System you Run
1) Winning the Turnover Battle – Having the Ball with more Scoring Opportunities than your Opponents means Winning more often..
2) Red-Zone Scoring Efficiency – Scoring TD’s instead of settling for FG’s
3) Defending in the Red-Zone- Holding Teams to more FG’s than TD’s
4) Minimize Negative Plays & Penalties
5) Good Special Teams – Winning the Field Position Game
6) Fortune with Injuries & having prepared Quality Depth on the Roster
G ..last I recall there are three facets of a team .Bill Davis on defense still is an albatross ,until we see otherwise.Nobody is disputing that personnel ,matters ,and as Pman has illustrated ,in many instances good health and good luck matter most .The Eagles new moving pieces usually takes some time to integrate themselves seamlessly,in pre -season they look like champs ,but nobody wins a thing in August ..I’ll wait and see how they perform when real bullets are flying.
The NFC is ours for the taking, Seattle’s O Line is a mess, their best corner is holding out n don’t forget Cary Williams is the other corner, Green Bay took a hit losing Nelson, Dallas took a hit losing their best corner plus not having a RB, as got us? Pre season or not, this team is jelling at record speed with all these new players, The D looks good n our starting ILB still haven’t played, if we can avoid the injury bug we’re going to make a serious run this year
**NFC East Reports
From Redskin Park.. The Recently Acquired OLB/Pass-Rusher Junior Galette is feared to have Torn his Achilles at Practice today and is likely lost for the 2015 Season…
i’m sure the eagles are breathing easier now panic paulman
I know LT Jason Peters, TE Brett Celek and QB Sam Bradford are …
That’s a big loss for the Redskins who were counting on having a big pass-rush from both sides (Kerrigan on the Right & Jalette on the Left)
no they are not goof ball! they haven’t thought one minute or one second about him. not ONE! and on washington week they will not think about him one second but you know who they will think about???? THE GUY THAT REPLACES HIM- your lack of understanding of pro sports is mind boggling considering you spend so much time watching and talking about it.
Jalette is one of the Top 3-4 Pass-Rushing OLB’s in the NFL over the last 2-3 Years.. and just because your not familiar with him doesn’t mean the rest of the Coach’s & Opponents in the NFL and True Football Fans are aware of his Abilities… Go Smoke your Pipe and Put your Robe on Einstein..
so what? i know who he is.. but your stupid comments about how the eagles are fearful of him etc is stupid or how they are breathing easier now– dude its the nfl- its a war of attrition- they don’t spend one minute worrying about it at this time- chip may not even know yet of an injury but if he does he isn’t breathing a sigh of relief about it! during game week they may have spent 5 minutes more putting in protection packages geared towards him, not much more- and trust me there was no fear at all– you just don’t understand how it works-
Oh fraud before you crow about the extra five please be informed that because they lost a key player the skins will add some wrinkles they otherwise wouldn’t have needed causing the birds to use an extra five installing a protection.
You just don’t understand the game. You look at it from this myopic lense without any consistency or basic knowledge.
Go smoke your pipe and put your robe on?? What the hell is that. That meth in Boone North Carolina ain’t no joke mane
**Atlanta Falcons sign Free-Agent QB Rex Grossman to be the #2 QB behind
Matt Ryan
Andrew sherman aint holding out its chancelor and he aint the best safety they have but very good player
Last Years Seahawk Secondary
All-Pro Safety Earl Thomas has not played yet this Pre-Season as he’s recovering from Surgery, Safety Kam Chancellor is in his 28th Day of Holding Out so who knows what kind of Football Shape he’s in..
All-Pro CB Richard Sherman is recovering from Off-Season Surgery and easing his way back and CB Byron Maxwell signed with the Eagles… If you recall, Nickel-Back T Simon had that nasty leg injury in last years SUper Bowl and is still up to 100%…
The Seahawk Secondary is going to look a lot different starting out the Season as these injured Players get back to speed and the Kam Chancellor contract situation works it way out
Good work G. I do think we go deep this year and if the secondary is even solid… we have a chance to be special.
The answer to your question G is a solid YES!
We have to wait and see how the season plays out but any fair evaluation at this point would have to conclude that the Chip Kelly moves were good ones! The offensive will be explosive, he has paid good attention to the defense and special teams.
No chip without a Qb in this league.
NFL news, ray mcdonald and ahmed brooks DID NOT HAVE A FALL GUY IN THEIR CREW!!!! DAMN.
That’s funny! Good one.
And the worst off season ever for san fran continues…..god must hate san fran this year
Steelers taking a hit on announcing the signing of Mike Vick on National Dog Day, where many Protestors were showing up to their Stadium with Signs and their Pet Dogs…

The former Girlfriend of Chicago Guard Derrick Rose has filed a lawsuit and charges that Rose Drugged her and had 2 of his Friends Gang-Rape her
Looks like things will get uglier with this story as the Authorities are now investigating..
Yikes! Another high quality ESPN employee ….
I read a little about the story and is sounds similar to what Darren Sharper was convicted of and is now spending 15 Years in Jail For… Sharper had multiple charges from multiple women in Louisiana. Arizona, Las Vegas & California all file charges against him..
For Derrick Rose it’s his old Girlfriend so who knows how credible she is but it’s a pretty nasty story if true…
