Eagles “D” Fails To Take Away Falcons Run Or Passing Game

JulioJones11One of the main areas where the Eagles tried to improve during the offseason was the secondary.  If you were to go by the way they got torched last night by Falcons wide receivers Julio Jones and Roddy White, the addition of Byron Maxwell wasn’t enough to fix the ineffective secondary.

Jones dominated the game by catching nine passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns.  White pitched in with four catches for 84 yards.

The Eagles pass defense did get a couple of interceptions with Kiko Alonso making a great play with a one-handed grab and Walter Thurmond picking off a pass when Billy Davis played a “safety-free” coverage with Thurmond following Ryan’s eyes and patrolling the middle of the field.

Chip Kelly said his coaching staff thought Malcolm Jenkins played well and I would agree, but he also dropped two interceptions that hit him right in the chest.  You can’t drop easy catches like that and expect to win.  Those interceptions would have stopped Falcon drives and put the Eagles offense in position to score.  I didn’t think the Eagles defense played well enough to win on last night.

The Eagles defensive line was the biggest disappointment.  They let the Falcons run for 105 yards on 35 carries and the pass rush was abysmal or non-existent for the most part.  Rookie running back Tevin Coleman ran for 80 yards on 20 carries, which helped the Falcons keep the pressure off of Ryan.  They never abandoned their running game.

Fletcher Cox got a sack of Matt Ryan, but the rest of the defensive line was missing in action.  Instead of being dominant, the Atlanta offensive line outplayed the Birds defensive front.  Outside linebackers Brandon Graham and Conner Barwin were not heard from as pass rushers.  I don’t remember them pressuring Ryan at all.

In the secondary, the Eagles never made it a point to double-team Jones and take him away from Ryan.  I didn’t see any of the Eagles defenders get a good jam on Jones and he made them pay.   I think you must at least delay the release of a receiver like Jones. The Eagles can’t afford to let him go wherever he wants without getting good jams on him and they need to double-team him at times.

They didn’t take away anything from the Falcons offense.  Atlanta threw the football to whomever they wanted to and they ran whenever they wanted to do so.  I think a defense should try to take away what the offense does best.

The Giants were double-teaming Dez Bryant this weekend and the Cowboys were double-teaming Odell Beckham Jr.  Jones is bigger and faster than either Bryant or Beckham, but the Eagles refused to double him.  They paid a heavy price for it.

The newly acquired Maxwell was the main victim for Jones.  The big wide receiver’s combination of size and speed proved to be too much for Maxwell.  He beat Maxwell deep a couple of times and just flat out ran away from him.  He turned around the corner on the other side, Nolan Carroll.  When you have a great player, who is going to be targeted by the opposing offense you must acknowledge a player with the skill level of Jones.

Look. If you don’t double team Jones you get what you get.

Maxwell was never going to be able to cover him solo. That was just a gift to Matty Ice and crew.

You Double Team Julio Jones and let someone else beat You… Falcons Other Receivers Roddy White, L Hankerson & Nick Williams are not running away from anyone.. Hell the Falcons didn’t even have Devin Hester Playing and probably have one of the most Un-Athletic TE’s Corps in the NFL with Jacob Tamme and L Tiolio who can both be covered by LB’s .. Who was Billy Davis Planning or Scared of … What did Chip Kelly know and when did he know it as far as this terrible Game Plan by Billy Davis.. . Then again, Chip Had his own problems trying to get a RB Average 2 Yards a Carry with his own crappy OL ….
Game was a real joke and eye opener who how much work needs to be done before anyone talks about the PLayoffs… Playoffs in my best Jim Mora Voice, Playoffs… You mean Playoffs…

The NFC East has 1 Team with a Win (Cowboys)
the NFC North has 1 Team win a Win (Packers)
all other 6 Teams lost while half of them were favored (Eagles,Lions,Vikings)

Wonder what Nick Foles & Jeff Fisher are thinking …

Come on Paulman when has Billy Davis made consistent adjustments to take away teams best receivers we seen this time and time again last year. He left Fletcher out to dry every single week it will be no different with Maxwell. He is a stubborn DC who only has decent game plans against piss poor teams.

the off season defensive money flowed to Ryans, Maxwell, Barwin, Graham, and Kendricks.
out of the 5 only Barwin played well.

Everyone knows that the pass rush comes from the olb in the 3-4. That’s Graham and Barwin. Neither of them were a factor. Bennie Logan, Fletcher, and Ced did their jobs. The olb never sniffed Ryan and the ilb were soft as hell against the run.

Still blind, and in denial huh…….Connor Barwin wad a COMPLETE non factor. No one who is impartial to his play, would ever state he played well.

He came in on the backend of 1 or 2 tackles, after someone else made the play as usual, and did NOTHING of his own effort….That’s it – nothing more

Didn’t surprise me. Typical for an average, locally overrated OLB.

Another Per Scheme & Game Plan by Billy Davis and I assume Approved by Chip Kelly… Every Team work a good part of the Summer on their opening Opponents Strengths and Weaknesses and it was very apparent that Newbie Falcons Coach Dan Quin had his Staff and Players up to snuff on what the Eagles like to do, at least for the 1st Half
The Blitzing, Crowded the line of Scrimmage, Shooting the Gaps by Kendricks,Barwin and or Alonso worked but wasn’t utilized until the 3rd Quarter after the Eagles were already down 20-3.. We saw a nice Corner Blitz by Nolan Carroll which fooled the Falcons and Worked, we neevr saw it again..
Why was LB DeMeco Ryans was even Activated ? He’s about 75% right now and has no stop and go ability, no explosion and was a step or two or three behind all Game long that he was finally yanked in the 3rd Quarter before he completely embarrassed himself
Not a good Start for a Team than many have Hyped up as a Super Bowl Contender which is a far cry from what the 2015 Eagles really are which is a Team that’s a Work in Progress with many new Players & Starters on it still trying to find their Roles, etc,etc
Special Teams didn’t look so Special last evening also..
Whats happened to WR Josh Huff who looks completely lost out on a Football Field anymore … He should be Cut and moved on from another wasted Draft Pick..

Bradford will be dinking and dunking to RB’s Sproles, Murray and Matthews All Season Long and will complete 80% of his Passes for 4,000 Yards but only throw 3 TD’ Passes… Good Grief… Dink and Dunk doesn’t work in the Red-Zone without a strong Running Game

Eagles haven’t been able to generate a pass rush with their front (sans blitz) for 2 years now.

They were up against an Atlanta team that just signed Jake Long because it has no faith in its starting RT and came away with nothing.

Take away Alonzo’s ridiculous INT and things could have gotten a lot worse quickly last night.

It was a Great Interception by Alonso, no doubt but that Pass from Matt Ryan was 2-3 Yards Short of a wide open Roddy White.. Ryans didn’t get enough air on it as White had gotten behind Alonso for an easy pitch and catch if ball was accurate..

The Entire Last Sequence of Plays was panic city also..
1st & 10 and Bradford throws a 2 Yard Out to Sproles who does not go out of bounds and wastes 20 Seconds and then 2nd Down and 8 a 5 yard Dink Pass to middle of Field and Receiver Tackled immediately before the Int but the point is 2 Plays for 8 Yards took about 40-45 Seconds which is not going to put any Offense in Scoring/Kicking Position

Doubling Jones is what I said earlier in the other post. I also mentioned how Bryant was played by the Giants. If we as fans can see this why can’t Billy Davis?! I believe that by doubling Jones in the beginning would have greatly improved our pass rush and run defense. You’re literally taking out one of their best best players. Yes it takes two players to do it but at least he’s not killing you. I believe Carroll would be able to hold his own against White or Hankerson. Our ILB could have stopped their TEs and RB if we would have doubled Jones. By not doubling Jones not only is he killing you but that’s also causing chaos in the other players head. I’m not going to do the name calling but I just feel Chip and Davis are way over their head in this league and especially in this division and conference. I guess I will just root for an 8-8 finish. It’s great to know our Head Coach went 10-6 for two seasons. Instead of rebuilding for these years. Who was he trying to win now for? Peters? Ryan’s? Barwin?

I know rebuilding and picking players in the top 5 is hit and miss but at least you have a PRO plan in place not a COLLEGE plan in place where you cut all the good players to bring Ducks aboard and think that’s the way to go. The hiring of Billy Davis was by far the worst. Hell I think Juan Castillo could have fielded a better defense

Great article by Bill Barnwell over on Grantland called “a tale of two halves”

Roasting Kelly for going into the season with backups Gardner and Barbre as the starting guards.

Really questioning the oline and new rbs inability to get going against last year’s 29th ranked run defense.

Not very kind to “as advertised” Bradford who he says is only good without pressure, and as soon as he feels any becomes inaccurate. Also brings up fact that no pass traveled over 20 yrds. Though did say Bradford was on fire as Atl d line were gassed and he had all day.

Doesn;t understand the decision to kick, and

Vinny, I just read the article, insightful. I agree with his take away from the o line play, like I stated last night, the Guards sucked….Kelce struggled too. I am not down on Bradford, what receivers do we have to stretch the field, what receiver puts concern in the defense? Matthews, that is it, Huff and Cooper are virtually non-existent and Agholor is a rook so he has to get his legs under him. O line is the reason for the poor run game, 11 carries between Murray and Mathews for 13 total yards…poor blocking by the o line!
I honestly look forward to see how Chip puts a game plan together to turn this performance around against a pretty good Dallas D. If the o line struggles again with their finesse ways, Chip may want to look at Bunche and Andrews who appear to be more physical.

Only an idiot like Vinniedaloser would seek to bash Bradford for his gutsy and productive performance. Bradford made quick decisions, got the ball out of his hands and despite terrible offensive line play that got him hit way to often…he brought the team back with smart play, doing what the offense is designed to do…take what the defense gives and not forcing stupid passes down the field.

Um..what’s 10-6 mean?

1 playoff loss (that shouldn’t have happened)

No playoff appearance the next time.

Lovie got fired after a 10-6 season.

10-6 is the same as 4-12 or 8-8 just lowers your drafting position, and you can say you had a “winning” season – but what exactly have you won?

I’m not saying I agree with Jakedog – but 10-6 doesn’t mean sh*t.

Actually it is very much comparable.

Lovie got fired after a 10-6 season b/c they didn’t make the playoffs and hadn’t consistently made the playoffs over the previous 5 years.

Say he’s a “horrible coach” is relative. 10-6 is 10-6. Chip has gone 10-6 – got to the playoffs and lost. Gone 10-6 and missed the playoffs.

Keep that up and there may be plenty of talk of what a “horrible” coach Chip Kelly is as well.

We almost all were guilty of buying into the belief that we had a mad scientist for a coach and GM .What I see after one game is a work in progress sign ,hanging above a manhole cover. The media can manipulate and sway opinions ,but players have to perform, coaches have to coach ,and GMs have to enable a franchise, both physically and fiscally..This coach and GM stuck a huge target on his back ,he will ultimately be the fall guy ,if the proverbial hits the fan …We can’t anoint him a genius and we can’t crucify him ,after one road game ..however when you do things in an unorthodox way ,you are fair game to beheld to a higher scrutiny.Someof his moves defied, the norm ,and that created a fascination with the Philadelphia Eagles .Just look at the prime time scheduling. There is always a freak show quality to Chip and his unorthodox ways ..He takes a huge risk ,but ,is it really ? He’s got a legacy that he’s trying to construct in the NFL but his downside risk is insured as he goes to college for an even bigger paycheck..what we are left with may be his least concern .He can either move over the rocky statue with his own likeness or become clubber Lang and vilified as none other ..one thing you can’t say ..he ain’t boring ..

Hate to be Over-Dramatic
But the Upcoming Game versus the Cowboys is the Biggest Game in Chip Kelly’s NFL Career.. The Eagles cannot afford to drop to 0-2, making teh Cowboys 2-0 with essentially a 3 Game lead on the Eagles for the NFC East Crown if they expect to make the 2015 Playoffs.. No Playoffs for Kelly in 2015 (2nd Year in a Row) diminishes his standing with Owner Jeff Lurie and around the NFL as an effective NFL HC/GM … It will be interesting to watch but there are no excuses with all the off-season moves and verbage that Chip Kelly has talked about that its about building a Winner right now, not for down the road so its time to put up by him, his Staff and his Players…
No Excuses, No Blaming Refs or Injuries or Weather… Its about beating the Man (Player) across from you..
Cowboys will watch the Falcons tape 1 time and chuck it in the garbage for it means little, both Teams know each other very well.. Cowboys DC Rod Marinelli knows what to expect from Chip Kelly and Billy Davis should know what to expect from the Cowboys regardless of them missing Dez Bryant which may make their Offense more unpredictable and challenging to stop..

Obviously I was being sarcastic about the Importance of meaningless Pre-Season Games..
But this Game #2 vs the Cowboys is most likely for the NFC East Division Crown is very important for the remainder and mind-set for this 2015 Team and Season…
As the Season Builds and Builds, there will be many more Important Games for Chip Kelly, but bottom line, he and the Eagles have to Win this Game if they want to be relevant for the 2015 Season.. Starting 0-2 with a head to head loss to your biggest Competitor for the NFC East Crown and going down to 0-2 in NFC Conference Play is a lot to overcome right out of the gate… Losses to AFC Teams (Pats, Bills) don’t hurt so much in the big picture of Conference races for Wild-Card Teams, but losing to NFC Competitors is why keeps you out of the Playoffs and especially to inferior Teams like the Falcons where everyone had the Eagles Penciled in as a W.. Now who do the Eagles have to Beat on the Road just to break Even?

What’ funny to me is that the team looks VERY much like it did last year – and seems to be on that same 8-10 win trajectory (I said the same last year) which may or may not be enough to win the East (depends on Dallas..again.).

BUT many of the same folk are saying the SAME thing – it’s too early – it’s just one game – yeah, but it’s a game we SHOULD have won and lost for some of the SAME reasons that they struggled last year.

lol

It’s like Groundhogs Day the football version.

And I’m not Doom & Gloom – I think they will be a middle of the road team and a shot at the division – but come on people – these are the EXACT same convos from last year – with almost the EXACT same opening performance against an inferior team except this time it ended in a loss.

Believe it or not TSJ, I agree with you..
Most of the Conversations, Concerns and Outlook are similar to last year..
The Bottom Line is with 10-11 New Starters and a 30% Roster Turnover is going to take a while with all these moving parts..
I admit I got caught up with the success of Pre-Season which is something I said I wouldn’t do, but did so anyways.. This is a 8-9 maybe a 10 Win Team and 2015 Season that must build itself first to Win the NFC East and then worry about being the Top of the NFC, but if Eagles can’t beat Dallas, then it can’t Win the NFC East, meaning it’s not really going anywhere as a Wildcard or even qualify to make the Post-Season..
After last Season’s Flat Performance in the Opener against the Jaguars at Home only to have a similar start in 2015 is most concerning..
It appeared the Eagles Players were leg-heavy, defensive and unsure of themselves all over again… If Matt Ryan doesn’t underthrow a open Roddy White (which Kiko Alonso did make a great play on) and then start the 3rd Quarter with a Gift Interception to Walter Thurmond, then I am not so sure the Eagles have much of a comeback.. The Eagles were Outcoached and Outschemed by another Newbie Coach and his Staff with a less Talented Roster which is what I am concerned most about… The Eagles played about 20 Minutes of Good Football and this will not be good enough to Win many Games in the NFL and I have to put this Loss on HC Chip Kelly and DC Billy Davis which Kelly is Responsible for..
The lame excuse that Julio Jones lines up in various POsitions as the reason as why not to Double-Team is one of lamest excuses I’ve heard from aHC in a while… Most #1 WR’s move around in today’s highly changing formations wise Offense.. Do you think Antonio Brown, AJ Green, Dez Bryant, Odell Beckham, Demarius Thomas, etc,etc Receiver is going to line-up in the same position on every snap.. What a Crock of Shit Chip Kelly is showing himself to be and to be honest, the real reason I don’t care for him much is that fact that he as clueless as Andy Reid was, when it comes to the Defensive Side of the Ball which was always an Eagles mainstay and now they’ve become one of the Worst Defenses over the last 5 Years in the NFL

We as eagle fans had buddy and his disdain for offensive side of the ball (o line especially) ,then we had Andy trying always to put square pegs into round holes ,and his arrogance ,that he knew more than the masses..now we are in the chip era,and I’m in agreement with T.S. And Pman,it’s still too early in the process to make any evaluations for this squad ,however ,chips B.S. Yesterday as Paul pointed out was really lame ,in regards to Julio and why he wasn’t doubled.Obviously chip is taking one for bill there ,but why?

Desert, Billy is Chip’s guy. he’s going to take the hit or cover for him. If the defense continues to mirror the problems it had last year, how long will Chip do this? Probably until seasons end, then we would see what would happen.

Eagles did give up almost 400 Yards to the Falcons who kept the Ball for 35 Minutes, again this is a Falcon Offense with no real proven weapons outside of WR Julio Jones & QB Matt Ryan and with 4 New Starters on OL (2 of which are back-up Players making their 1st NFL Starts and a LG in Levitre with 5 Practices under his belt with Atlanta)
A Rookie RB in Tevin Coleman, No Real Weapons at TE or a Banged up Roddy White…

As almost 90% of Eagles Fans talked smack all week long on how the Eagles Def Front 7 was just going to annihilate the Falcons OL & Offense and we saw none of that …. So as soon as I bring up the shortcomings and poor game plan & strategy by the Eagles Coach’s, I am called a Flip-Flopper… This Team is just not as Good as most People thought..
They are a 8-9 maybe 10 Win Team if the ball bounces the right way..
It is what it is.. and No Damn Excuses either that Bradford or Murray are working behind a crappy OL, or that Ertz or DeMeco Ryans are still recovering from Injuries, (then keep them out if they are) or a Rookie WR Agholor (Rookis JOrdan Matthews contributed last Year)
or 2nd Year Josh Huff (He now has ADD and is still upset about issues from last Year – F’Him Huff is not a NFL Player- that simple)

TSJ is correct – Same Shit, Different Coach, Different Schemes, Different Players, But Same old Results…. The Eagles are just not Good Enough

Now they are exciting and will get National Media because of Chip Kelly
but at the end of the Day a 10-6 Record or Worse and no Playoffs and the Chip Kelly Experiment becomes stale for Philidelphia and the NFL and he will wisk his White Chubby Ass to Austin,Tx and Coach for the University of Texas and to be honest, I can’t wait until smirking, arrogant ass is gone…

No way zilents44 you can’t rely on any specific area to carry the load for the Eagles. Whether it’s special teams defense offense they all consistently break down at random during the season.

The guards are serviceable at best so chip has got to have really good game plans, run some reverses and fakes with josh huff…get him involved early so he can help this team out

I am no longer buying into the Hype like you guys..I admit I bought into it and inflated this Team’s Chances and I am back to my original stance that I stated last Spring/Early Summer
This Team is a 8-10 Win Team which is really No Better then what we had the last 2 Seasons..
Maybe Next Year (2016 Season) they can get to 11-12 Wins and Secure a Top #2 Seed in the NFC as they gain more experience with playing with each other.. But who knows about next Year, Chip Kelly is a Year to Year Coach with his College Background..
Year #4 with Chip could being a 4th QB, a New DC, a Rebuilt OL, etc,etc
I am no worried about the Future for I really don’t think Chip Kelly is a long-term Coach for the Eagles..

Your no longer buying the hype Paulman weren’t you the one that came at me saying who can’t the Eagles beat this season. Then you went on to downplay how the Packers Seahawks and others took a step back to support your claim. Are you coming back down to reality due to the fact the Eagles came out looking just as shitty as they did last season against Jacksonville.

Z it’s too easy, it’s like shooting fish in a barrel …the fraud man is not knowledgeable of the game, does not understand the simplest terminology, makes up stuff and then flip flops. He has predicted win goals from 5 on up. When he talks scheme….eye crumba the key doesn’t know a stretch play from a sweep…
