Eagles Safety Walter Thurmond Wants To Come Back, But……..

WaltherThurmond1Eagles safety Walter Thurmond said he would love to return to the Birds secondary next season, but the fact that the Eagles are only $18 million dollars under the salary cap, makes his return to Philadelphia unlikely.   He said the NFL is a business and many times the business part of the game dictates what happens from year to year.

Eagles defensive end Cedric Thornton, who was walking by when I was talking about Thurmond moving on,  said, “The Eagles would crazy to let Thurmond walk” and I agree with him.  Personally, I think Thurmond will be back because the cap is expected to go up considerably during the off season.

Safeties who can make open field tackles, as well as walk up a wide receiver and cover him are an unusual item in the NFL.  The Eagles have two of them in Thurmond and Malcolm Jenkins, who I think should have been a Pro Bowler this season.

Thurmond feels like he showed the NFL coaches and fans that he can play safety on the NFL level.  The former Oregon Duck wasn’t pleased about the way he covered in man-to-man situations when the Birds asked him to walk up on a receiver and lock him down. Thurmond said his technique was lacking.

I had to give rookie Eric Rowe a congratulatory hand shake because I thought he played well when he got his shot this season.  I loved the way he played aggressively rather than playing scared on the corner.  I see potential in the young man.

At the Eagles safety position, Ed Reynolds turned some heads with that big game-clinching interception against the Bills.  He has showed quite a bit of promise going forward.  Jenkins was very impressed with Reynolds and expects great things from him going forward.

How much would releasing Peters, Demeco, Celek and Cooper give us to play with? Also Thornton will be out. 80% chance we are going 4-3 and he is a 3-4 DE. He didn’t start out that way but that’s actually his ideal fit.

Only problem is Peters, Sanchez, and Celek aren’t going anywhere, so that savings won’t be coming from them.

Cooper is gone, as is Ryans, and any other menial upcoming free agents.

Plus the cap does go up a little.

Celek,Sproles, and M Jenkins may all be asked to rework their Contracts
They have Approx $131 in Committed Contracts in 2016
The Salary Cap is expected to Rise to $153 Million leaving the Eagles Approx
$22 Million under the Cap
The Eagles have 12 Current Free-Agents
They will have 6-7-8 Draft Picks to Sign as well an Undrafted Free-Agents

The Eagles will not be big players in Free-Agency and will have to address most of their team needs thru the Draft

Eagles not in great cap situation but not all that bad either. If they really wanted to, they could have Curry, Thurmond, extend Cox, and maybe even Bradford.

They are 22 mil under the projected cap with the following likely cuts:
Celek – 5 mil savings
Sanchez – 3.5 Mil savings
Cooper – 2.9 Mil Savings
Meco – 3.5 Mil savings
Peters – 6.3 Mil savings
Total – 21.2 savings in cuts.

Curry will probably take 5-7 mil to resign, Cox will need another 8 mil (already counts as 7 mil on next years cap so total number in the 15 range), Thurmond will need 5 mil, and Bradford 18. It would be tight but possible if they want them all.

Personally, I think Bradford completely depends on who the coach is. If it is a rookie head coach there is no way they are signing Bradford. You just don’t handcuff a rookie head coach with an 18 mil QB. Now, if they get Payton or some ex-head coach, I could see them signing Bradford, moving the D to a 4-3 and trying to compete next year.

If they get a guy like Gase or McDermout then they will likely let Bradford walk and stay well below the cap for future moves while drafting a QB and signing a Journeyman QB to bridge the gap.

Honestly, I would be fine either way.

Here are the people the Eagles should prioritize in resigning

1. Bradford-whatever takes. We have to resign Bradford and provide stability at the QB position. We cant lose him and go into ‘hope we can find one from somewhere mode’…losing Bradford would set the team back tremendously.

2. Extend Cox..no brainer here

3. Get a new deal for Curry: this of course means going to the 4-3 defense

4 Resign Thurmond-we got pretty good safety play

yea great idea. whatever it takes to resign 1 of the worst starting qbs in the nfl… brilliant!

lmfao blaine gabbert did better this year than this looooozah as did other losers like fitpatrick (haaaaaa), tannehill and hoyer.

tyrod, cutler, and josh mccown are a few others that outperformed him… he is worse then them all.

imo the only options are franchise him – just to be 10000000000% certain he is a steamy pile of feces. but thats outrageous to give him $ like that

or let him walk.

in all honesty i think its almost guaranteed they let him walk. after getting burned on bad deals with murray and maxwell i just dont think they are gonna gamble with another big contract with a player they hope magically becomes good after being shit for years…

ps those sanchez, brandon graham, and kendricks deals look a little ridiculous too

If you do not bring Bradford back then we must be prepared to do the following.

Trade Fletcher Cox, let Curry and other FA walk. Cut Peters, Celek, and cut or trade any player not under contract for at least 3 years

Lmfao you sound scared. Sam brings that much to the team in ur opinion that ur saying if we are not resigning him- a bottom 10 qb every year he plays with a losing record – then we might as well blow it up?

Cmon man don’t be scared you aren’t losing anything if you let him walk Ryan Fitzpatrick josh mccown & Blaine gabbert outperformed him this year and 2 of the 3 were on worse teams

nah not missing the point bro, i think you are. point is you are rebuilding whether you sign bradford or not, you are looking for the next qb whether you sign him or not… you know what you are getting with bradford if you pay him – a losing record, injuries, games missed, turnovers, and a bottom 10 qb… if your goal is to be 8-8 at best sure sign him… but if mediocrity is not acceptable then you cant give sam a cent

Unless a 28 year old Drew Brees is coming with him I’ll pass. He will require at least one draft pick. They are too valuable to trade- I will never again cheer a FA signing for the eagles unless its a mid-level guy to fill a need (jenkins comes to mind)- you need multiple draft picks each year to contribute at a high level

There’s no hearing anything JH,
Its common knowledge on what Teams are interested in Sean Payton
The Saints are asking for a 2nd Round Draft Pick in Return (which the Eagles don’t have which means it would require their 1st Round Pick)
More importantly, the Teams that Sean Payton are Interested in are the NY Giants and SF 49ers now that the Colts have Extended Chuck Pagano
Payton is not interested in a “Rebuild” for that’s what he has in New Orleans and would get in Philly or Miami
Payton’s 1st Choice – 49ers have High Draft Picks, QB Kapernick is still under Contract and have $43 Million in Cap Space and a Rich Tradition of WInning and his Daughter goes to College in the Southern California Area at Pepperdine University
Payton’s 2nd Choice – Giants were Sean Payton’s first NFL Job under Bill Parcells and they have a Dynamic Offense in Place…

My Sources have Sean Payton returning to the Saints for 2016 Season and then leaving next Off-Season to become the HC for the Chargers who will be moving up to LA,Ca …

I say that statement is a bold face lie…….considering that Payton isn’t even addressing his situation with the Saints until tomorrow…

Why would you come on here and state that lie…..Something is wrong with you Paul. You can’t stand being wrong can you????

Payton’s already had his meeting with Saints GM Mickey Loomis, who you keep saying he’s tight with, and is actually one of the reasons that he’s looking to leave New Orleans and with Saints Ownership (Which is in transition from the elder, ill Owner Tom Benson and his New Wife who Mr Benson wants to leave Majority Control to, though his Kids want Majority Control away from Her which is another Reason Sean Payton wants out as its a daily drama soap opera with the Benson’s. Mr Tom Benson has Alzheimers kicking in pretty good and he probably doesn’t have the mental capacity to make major decisions about the Franchise.. The Kids want his NEw Wife out for she’s in it for the $$$ and Attention while the Kids want to Run a Football Team…

If you want Sources, Look them up yourselves but this is whats really happening in New Orleans and who Sean Payton wants to move on for he knows things will be turning uglier by the day with the Benson’s Fights over Ownership..

His meeting is scheduled for tomorrow Paul, Per NFL Network, and that’s when he’ll speak to the media.

I did hear that the Saints want a 2nd, but many are of the belief the price is lower, and the Saints are trying to increase their take by starting a bidding war for his services.

But don’t make up stuff. The Colts were never in negotiations with Payton.

The second round pick in exchange for Payton is something that I heard on 97.5 from that guy Anthony Gargano. I think his source was Ian Rapoport…. Rappoport has been wrong in the past, so I take what he says with a grain of salt.

It’s hard to get facts from anyone… Even when you get a quote from the source of the story them self, it’s often a lie.

Per Chris Mortenson of ESPN, the Indy Colts were in heavy negotiations with Sean Payton yesterday and the Saints but simply could not make an agreement in terms of Compensation, and decided to keep Chuck Pagano which is why it took to 9pm last evening to announce the extension for Pagano..
I expected and stated that both Payton and Colts would have a strong interest in each other.. Who wouldn’t want to Coach Andrew Luck for hte next 10 Years.. It appears that Colts Owner Irsay, held Chuck Pagano off until exhausting his attempt at getting Payton, and when they didn’t happen, he extended a well liked and thought off Coach in Chuck Pagano..
Well Played by Mr Irsay, I have to admit…

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reports the Colts did not have conversations with Sean Payton or his agent before re-signing Chuck Pagano.
This refutes a report from The Tribune-Star’s Tom James, who said talks between the Colts and Payton broke down before owner Jim Irsay decided to re-sign Pagano. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Colts expressed interest in Payton, but negotiations might not have taken place. Either way, the Colts have already committed to Pagano for the long term, and Payton likely remains available for the right offer.

He started his NFL Coaching Career with the Eagles in 1984, maybe he’ll want to finish it with the Green & Silver .. His Family can Stay up in North Jersey and he can get a nice Appt in Town… It could work for 2-3 Years..
