Notes From The Phillies’ 9-1 Loss To Washington

hellllThe Philadelphia Phillies had their three-game winning streak snapped on Friday night, falling to the Nationals. Their record drops to 5-6.

On The Mound

  • Jeremy Hellickson was a disaster tonight, and barely made it through three innings.
  • Hellickson went out to the mound, threw his warmup pitches, and it was all downhill from there. He gave up a solo home run to the first batter he faced, and proceeded to give up a total of five runs in the first inning alone.
  • Hellickson just didn’t have any good stuff tonight. He was knocked around early and often, and the Nationals really hit him hard at every turn.
  • With the bases loaded, Hellickson gave up a bases-clearing double to former Phil Jayson Werth.
  • Hellickson also gave up an RBI-hit to the pitcher, as the Nationals batted around in the first inning.
  • Hellickson would last two more frames, and give up one more run in the third.
  • Brett Oberholtzer made his second appearance of the season, and didn’t do much to stop the bleeding. The lefty allowed three runs on seven hits over four innings.
  • James Russell pitched a scoreless eighth.
  • Elvis Araujo struck out the side in the ninth.

At The Plate

  • The Phillies put up a feeble effort at the plate. They managed just one run on four hits.
  • Ryan Howard provided the lone run, hitting a solo shot in the bottom of the ninth.
  • Maikel Franco had a bases loaded opportunity with two outs, but grounded out to end a rally in the third inning.
  • Emmanuel Burris got a start at second base at hit out of the leadoff spot. He went 0-4.
  • Freddy Galvis hit out of the two-hole and went 1-3 with a walk.
  • Odubel Herrera went 1-2 and worked two more walks.
  • Carlos Ruiz went 0-4.
  • Cedric Hunter started in left field, and went 1-4.
  • Peter Bourjos went 0-4 with three strikeouts.

Final Thoughts

Terrible start to a weekend series with the first-place Nationals.

It wasn’t so much that the Phillies got blown out, but for Jeremy Hellickson to come out with nothing and put the team in an instant 5-0 hole in front of the home crowd is about as sobering as it gets for a team that had done very well to win four of their previous five.
