The Philadelphia Phillies snapped their tw0-game losing streak on Sunday afternoon, taking down the Nationals 3-2 in 10 innings. Their record improves to 6-7.
On The Mound
- Charlie Morton turned in another good start, allowing just one run on four hits over six innings.
- Morton struck out six and walked three.
- Hector Neris pitched a scoreless inning in the seventh.
- David Herandez got the first two outs of the eighth, and allowed a hit.
- Elvis Araujo got the final out of the eighth.
- Jeanmar Gomez pitched two innings, working a scoreless ninth and allowing a home run to Bryce Harper in the 10th. Gomez would get the win on the mound.
At The Plate
- The offense generated three runs on seven hits.
- Carlos Ruiz hit a solo home run in the second inning, the team’s only run in regulation.
- In the bottom of the 10th, facing former Phillie closer Jonathan Papelbon, the offense managed a surprising two-run rally to come from behind for a walk-off win.
- Peter Bourjos doubled, and Andres Blanco would would single him home with two outs to deal Papelbon a blown save. The next batter, Freddy Galvis knocked in Blanco to end the game.
- The offense was a mess to watch earlier in the game.
- Freddy Galvis was 0-4 and leading off before his late-inning heroics.
- Cesar Hernandez hit out of the two-hole, and went 1-4.
- Odubel Herrera went 0-3 with a walk.
- Maikel Franco went 0-4 with two strikeouts.
- Darin Ruf got a start at first base, and went 1-3 with a double.
- Tyler Goeddell played left field, and went 0-3.
Final Thoughts
After getting abused and blown out in the first two games of the series, seeing the Phillies rally for two runs in the 10th inning to embarrass Jonathan Papelbon in the series finale is a very satisfying consolation prize.
On a side note, Bryce Harper is just ridiculous. The Nationals’ slugger has developed into one of the best modern-day Phillie-killers. He hit home runs in every game of this series, as Phillies pitching just couldn’t keep him in the yard.

how great was that, Papelbon blows the save and then takes the loss? That Bryce Harper is awesome. 3 games against Phils 3 HRs, one each game. WOW. Looks like a repeat MVP. Yankees are going to steal that guy when he hits free agency.
Love seeing pap blow up especially against a bum like galvis
The nats are loaded but i think relying on an aging Paplebum may bite them in the arse….
The Phils OF is bad. Maybe when Cody Ashe returns the bottom of the lineup will start to perform. I pretty much gave up expecting anything from the Phils after the 5th batter ( Howard/Ruf) but Ruiz took a 3-0 fastball out of the park yesterday batting in the 6th spot and Bourjos hit 2 for 4 yesterday and scored the tying run batting 7th.
I think Asche and who got hurt that they were going to play in right??? Sweeney maybe??
Whats Asche Injury Status? Is he expected back soon ?
I have not see Bourjos Play much, Who has the Better Arm ?
I think it’s an oblique.. Bourjols is a GG caliber OF. He has a good arm…
We are banking on Williams in one corner
Got it, those Oblique’s can be 2 Weeks to 2 Months… Hard to tell…
I’ll be up Visiting Fathers Days Weekend as we have a Niece & Nephew Graduating High School as well as our Son.. My Sister works for the Phils/CBP in the VIP Box Suite Lounge Area and got our Family a Suite for the Fathers Day Game this Year… I think they are playing the Arizona Diamondbacks and this will be my first time to see most of these New Phillies in person.. I haven’t been to CBP in about 3 Years…
