Notes From The Phillies’ 11-1 Loss To New York

velasquezThe Philadelphia Phillies lost their second straight game on Tuesday night, falling to the Mets 11-1. Their record drops to 6-9.

On The Mound

  • Vince Velasquez is mortal. Following his impressive shutout effort last week, Velasquez came down to earth a bit tonight, allowing five runs (though only two were earned) on five hits while striking out four over 4.1 frames of work.
  • Velasquez gave up a two-run home run in the first inning, and gave up three more in the third.
  • Elvis Araujo picked up the final two outs in the fifth inning.
  • Brett Oberholtzer pitched two innings, but gave up four runs on four hits.
  • James Russell allowed two runs on three hits in the eighth.
  • Dailer Hinojosa pitched a scoreless ninth.

At The Plate

  • The Phillies managed just one run on nine hits.
  • Ryan Howard supplied the team’s lone run, driving in a run in the eighth inning with the game well out of hand.
  • Freddy Galvis remains in the leadoff position, going 1-4 with a single.
  • Andres Blanco got a start at second base, and went 2-3 with a walk.
  • Maikel Franco was dropped to fifth in the order, and went 1-4.
  • David Lough got another start in left, and went 1-4 with a single.
  • Cameron Rupp went 2-4 with a double.
  • Tyler Goeddel played right and went 0-3.

Final Thoughts

This has been a terrible stretch for the Phillies, who have been beat up pretty badly in the last two series by the Nats and Mets.

The Phils have fallen behind early, and the ineptitude of the offense just spells their doom.

Given the talent on the team, its to be expected that these things will happen. Starting pitching is good enough to give them a chance to win every night, but the offense literally can’t score more than a run or two a night.

I’m a little concerned about Maikel Franco. I think he’s feeling the pressure of being one of the only capable bats in the lineup, and his play is suffering because of it.

ouch! – when you throw 95-97 mph like Velasquez and a batter connects it travels. 2 crushing HR off him and a couple more that the wind knocked down that could have been goners too.
