The Philadelphia Phillies won the first game of their series against Washington on Tuesday night 4-3. Their record improves to 10-10.

On The Mound

  • Vince Velasquez bounced back from a rough start to throw a solid outing, allowing just three runs on five hits and three walks over six innings.
  • Velasquez might have had an even better line if not for a poor defensive decision by Maikel Franco in the fifth inning. With runners at first and second with one out, Franco got a ground ball that he should have turned into a double play. However, instead of going around the horn to hit second and first base, Franco opted to run and tag third, before throwing to first. Franco only got one out on the play, forced Velasquez into a longer inning, and sure enough, the Nationals were able to capitalize for two runs in the frame.
  • David Hernandez threw a scoreless seventh inning.
  • Hector Neris pitched a clean eighth. Neris has overtaken David Hernandez for the team’s setup role.
  • Jeanmar Gomez locked down the save in the ninth.

At The Plate

  • The Phils got out to a quick start, thanks to a two-run home run by Andres Blanco in the first inning.
  • Blanco, getting a start for Freddy Galvis at shortstop, had a strong offensive showing, picking up three hits, including a double that would score the go-ahead run in the seventh.
  • Cesar Hernandez singled home a run in the fourth inning. Hernandez turned in a three-hit game.
  • Maikel Franco doubled home the go-ahead run in the seventh.
  • Odubel Herrera went 1-3 with two walks.
  • Ryan Howard went 0-2 with a walk, dropping his average to .177.
  • Cameron Rupp went 1-4 with a single and scored a run.
  • Peter Bourjos started in right, and went 0-4.

Final Thoughts

After a disaster of a home series against the Nationals last week, the Phillies were able to come out and pick up a quick early lead in the first inning. This would provide the team with some good early momentum, and perhaps a little bit of confidence that they needed to stand up to the Nats.

To pick up two quick runs on a strong pitcher like Max Scherzer had to feel great for this lineup.

The team was able to pick each other up several times throughout the night, overcoming some mistakes to preserve the win.

Scrappy team. I don’t think that I was alone in thinking that they wouldn’t be .500 after 20 games. Still going to take their lumps, but as previously discussed they have a lot of the farm to look forward to.

If their pitching keeps them in a game they will scrap– they will also get hammered 11-2…. I think you are seeing guys who are grateful to be in the bigs– you have to give Herrara so much credit for his new approach. He literally understands for him to be a big leaguer he has to take pitches and walk–keep that high OBP– great rule 5 pickup,, freddy galvis would be wise to learn from Blanco because ultimately that is going to be his role, Hernandez while not spectacular is hanging in there…

Hamels is shelved with a groin injury and Giles is getting torched while unexpected roster makes Velezquez and Gomez are looking great.
