On the first day of Eagles OTA workouts, I was impressed by the way rookie quarterback Carson Wentz is already skilled in his call of the cadence before the snap of the football. He knows how to make that urgent cadence at the beginning the cadence to give the defense the impression that the ball is going to be snapped. Many times defensive players will start off at a spot that doesn’t allow them to do their job when the quarterback starts his cadence, but when they think the ball is getting ready to be snapped, they get in a position where they know they can do their jobs out of.
The league’s top quarterbacks like Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers to name a few, force the defense to show what defensive front and coverage they are in, by coming to the line with an urgent snap count. Once you show what you’re in, they may change the play. Wentz was ready to audible at the line of scrimmage in his first practice.
He’s also good at getting the ball out of his hands and making accurate throws to his receivers. Yesterday, the Eagles quarterbacks were throwing the ball underneath primarily.
Wentz also knows how to sets up a quick screen by looking to his left to take the defense in that direction, then coming back to his right to deliver the football.
He is definitely far ahead of most rookie quarterbacks. He still needs to work on his deep ball. Wentz overthrew some receivers and he underthrew the ball to others.
I like the energy Wentz plays with. Unlike Bradford, who doesn’t verbally push his teammates, Wentz is energetic and talking. Bradford seems to try to preserve every bit of energy he has while Wentz runs from drill to drill. The youngster never stops moving and that energy is contagious.
Wentz looks like he could come to the line of scrimmage and call the plays from there. He seems to have command of what he is doing, therefore I think it’s going to be very difficult to keep him on the bench throughout this entire season. I don’t think he needs that and I’m starting to believe they’re wasting a season, if they don’t let him play.
The kid should play….it makes no sense to sit the kid on the bench….smh!
