Here’s My First Podcast – G. Cobb’s Bottom Line

CarsonWentz9Here’s my first podcast.  It’s going to be a regular thing here on GCobb.com. I’ll be getting interviews with Eagles, Phillies, Sixers and Flyers players, as well as coaches and front office people.

Now regarding the Eagles at this point in the off season, we’ve got a good idea about what this team is going to look like when the season starts.  With some of the OTA’s being open, I’ve had the chance to see the Birds quarterbacks in action, so on this podcast, I give you my take on Sam Bradford, Chase Daniel and Carson Wentz.  The Birds have an interesting situation at the running back situation with often injured starter Ryan Mathews being backed up by diminutive third down expert Darren Sproles, Kenjon Barner and rookie Wendell Smallwood.

Of course you can’t talk about the running backs without talking about the offensive line.  I talk about left tackle Jason Peters, left guard Alan Barbre, center Jason Kelce, right guard Brandon Brooks, Lane Johnson and their backups.  The Birds wide receivers are an interesting topic with Jordan Matthews, Nelson Agholor, Josh Huff, Reuben Randle, Chris Givens along with a group of free agents.

I also go to the defensive side of the ball and talk about the group they have there.  Fletcher Cox knows he’s going to get his money because they need him to dominate in this defense.   In fact the entire defense line must play dominant football.  If they’re getting blocked, this entire defense and team is in trouble.

This Defense is in trouble regardless. They have NO PASS RUSHERS!!!!

Vinny Curry will help, but beyond that there is none – and don’t give me Connor Barwin.

No depth, nor extraordinary talent at the Linebacker position, along with the presence of the potential of the injury history coming into play.

I think the secondary has more talented than the LB Core…Jalen Mills, Eric Rowe, Rodney McCleod, and Malcom Jenkins. The depth of Leodis McKelvin, Ron Brooks, Nolan Carroll, and Denzel Rice.

Love Brandon Brooks – I suggested the Eagles draft him the year he got drafted – However, Allen Barbre, is not an NFL STARTER; It’s not even hard to see. Without the presence of a first round pick next year – They need to look to Free agency to fill holes next year at:

OG- Larry Warford
LB – Khalil Mack
DE – Ziggy Ansah

Onto your comments about Ben Simmons – again I say Bull….

Brandon Ingram hasn’t displayed any passion for anyone question Simmons in comparison. In fact Simmons has NO issue with his passion, or work ethic to play in Philadelphia – Get outta here with BS…Give us Simmons everyday of the week.

The Keepers on the Eagles were Cox and Logan and to give Bradford and Daniel anything while Cox/ Logan aren’t locked up was horrible roster management.

Podcast topic:
or article- Phillies first overall selection prospects the day before MLB draft on June 9th
Before training camp, liked to hear a few quotes from Greg Lewis, new Eagle WR coach plus who has best chance to replace the departed Riley Cooper.

But what I most would like to hear at least one GCobb podcast interview featuring:
1) Jaylen Brown’s mom,
2) Tyler Dorsey’s mom,
3) Jawan Carter’s mom.
4) and their father.

The Top 5 Short-List for the Phillies per

1) LHP – AJ Puk – (Florida)
2) OF – Mickey Moniak – (La Costa Canyon High School, San Diego)
3) OF – Kyle Lewis – (Mercer)
4) OF – Corey Ray – (Louisville)
5) OF – Blake Rutherford (Southern Cal)

Work is the Phillies Front Office have removed High School LHP Jason Groome off their Short List for that #1 Selection and that Mickey Moniak has the inside Track for the #1 Pick

shocked! The phils have no left handed pitchers anywhere from Single A to the the major league team ( Adam Morgan is their only LH starter and he can’t get anyone out) That is why I had Groome number one on my wish list.

Moniak, Lewis and Rutherford have really risen Up the “Big Board” per MLB Scouts.. They say this Year, while there is a lot of Depth, but there is really no Consensus #1,”Can’t Miss” Prospect as in the past last few Drafts..

Corey Ray is a little guy (5-11 195lbs) Solidly built and a Strong Outfielder, Line-Drive, Contact Hitter… Rutherford and Lewis are Bigger, Stronger, Corner OF or Potentially even 1B down the Road and are more “Power’ type of Hitters..

Moniak is 6-2′ -195lbs and Scouts love his Swing, Maturity, and High Baseball IQ and appears to be a Natural Hitter using the entire Ballpark and can handle the Off-Speed stuff as well.. Some Scouts have Compared him to a Shawn Green Type… Bats Left and Throws Right Handed

I don’t necessarily understand the financial end of it but apparently they have so much money to pay and if they take say the fifth best player with the agreement that they will not give number one slot money so they can use it in other guys. Anyway I hope its puk and he is in the bigs quick like Nola

I like theAJ Puk Selection.. The kid is big, pitched well for a Big-Time Program versus Great Competition with Top Notch Coaching and could Start out in AA Ball and be on a fast track to the Big Team within 3 Years
You can never have enough Good Arms

J P Crawford and Cornelius Randolph were last 2 high school bat first rounders that the phils selected. They seem to be happy so far with both of them. Maybe their scouting department’s strength is locating bats like Crawford, Randolph, and now Mickey Moniak. If it isn’t broke why change.

They have made it pretty clear they are going the pitching route as a general rule. I’m not saying they won’t pick a bat but philosophically they want arms. As fort heir scouting dept. this is a new regime.
I count 10-12 arms that could be in the bigs within a year.
They do need a blue chip bat… I think Crawford and Williams are solid MLB players but they need some boppers

reminds me of yesteryear Phils teams that keep marching David Bell out every day at 3rd base because they were paying him so much money on a long term contract. It was brutal to watch David Bell play. In 2008 when David Bell’s contract ran out they finally replaced him with Pedro Felix at 3rd and won the World Series. Howie Roseman is now in the same situation with Sam Bradford. Massive stupid contract on a horrible player so they march him out there over and over and over again.

Just because you won’t vilify expensive Phillie and Eagle front office mistake signings doesn’t mean I won’t. I reject their phoney baloney collaboration hide mumbo jumbo won’t take responsibility for the horrible contract Phillie and Eagle protectionist front office stances of both franchises. You rest your fingers by not touching the calculator and continue giving soothing pats on the back to Montgomery and Roseman. I’ll kick them while they are down so they have to look up at the fan’s disgust for their inept imput in playoff droughts.

There is nothing to vilify… it is the COST of running a professional sports franchise- the market value for players is disgustingly high to a person that makes a regular salary. Your ‘disgust’ doesn’t interest them because you don’t understand the market in the least.
Right now in MLB I can count at least 10 pitchers that signed long-term expensive contracts in their 30’s that we all know there is a great chance they will give out before they fulfill their contract– same with position players. its the business its the market–
If you want to run a professional sports franchise you will pay, you will overpay and you will eat some contracts, you will also have some young guys out perform their contracts…

Well– Asche is no bobber but in two seasons at about 120 games per season he is hitting 250 with 22 hr– that doesn’t remind anyone of willie mays but Bourjos is an automatic out with no pop– so you have asche in Lf, Williams in RF with Goedel as your 4th– a lot better than goedel, borjous and Lough….

Might be a closer candidate. Phils are going to have to start moving some of these arms to the pull pen.

Nola and Velázquez appear to be long term starters.
leaving 3 spots long term between: Eickhoff, Thompson, Efflin, Asher Eschelman, Appel, Kilome and Lively plus they still have to find one to two left hand starters.

I have heard zero chatter from the guys plugged in to the Phil’s on a Howard release. I have to think they are working on a dignified way for him to walk away. Obviously, he or nobody would leave about $12 on the table…. Have him walk away and sign a service contract?

Maybe we see a Pulled Hammy on Ryan Howard and then get moved to the 30 Day DL List to give them time to work out a Deal to maybe an AL Team in Need of a DL
I think the way the Roster is Set and Locker-Room is that most of the Young Players have no Real Ties to Ryan Howard, the New Front Office don’t either.. It may just be better to Release him, eat his remaining Contract and give that Playing Time to youngsters Tommy Joseph or Cody Ashe or D Ruff if he ever gets back his Stroke..
I don’t think the Young New Core of the Phillies will miss Ryan Howard much at all..

No team will deal for him… His swing is gone
Also, you have no feel for the team nor do you have an idea about the locker room. As for no connection from the FO…. No personal connection but when you take over stewardship of a billion dollar franchise with a fan base you have to take a lot of things into consideration.

I don’t have anything against High school OF bat Mickey Moniak if that is the route the Phils go with the number one overall selection just prefer a LHP in Jason Groome. AJ Puk worries me, his body looks too much like former Phil LHP David West who was just a guy.

what time do they make their pick? I am betting on PUK– I think they just want to load up on arms. As I’m pointing out in another part of this thread– the arms race is extremely expensive– getting good young arms that can dominate/contribute at a controllable age is preferable- for example Arietta is the best pitcher in MLB and only makes $10, has two years of arbitration and is 30 (which is old to be at this point of the salary scale)–

Tonight Phils on at 7pm vs Brewers which is winnable but Eickhoff gives up 4 runs a game and the phils bats don’t give him the runs he needs.
US Women soccer rematch from World Cup Final vs Japan at 9pm on FS1.
& Curry vs Lebron at 9pm on ABC.
I’ll probably watch women’s soccer after the Phils which should finish before the NBA finals game leaving most of the 2nd half.

The NHL Playoffs have been Great this Year as usual..
Last Nights OT Game between the Pens/Sharks was a Great Game
I’ve been catching the final Quarter of the NBA Playoff Games and Cavs/Warriors should be a Close Series.. I like Curry & Warriors Team, Coach Kerr as they are exciting Team to watch and am not much of a big Lebron Fan, but it would be nice to see the Cavs Win for their Fans and the City of Cleveland which has gone on for years without a Championship in any Sport
No Phillies on TV Down Here, but the Braves are on every Night and sometimes the Reds or Orioles are on Fox Sports South..

NOPE

Phillies designated OF David Lough for assignment.
Lough was batting .239/.342/.313 in 30 games this season for the Phillies. He’s a good defender, but the 30-year-old outfielder has never been much of a hitter.

Well the Phillies should have.. It’s over for Ryan Howard everyone including himself knows it, so why keep him around a Team with a new Young Core Group that is Rebuilding and needs to find it’s Future 1B plus give some of the other Younger Players more Playing Time/At-Bats..
Maybe they will wait until All-Star – either way, the surprise success of the 1st 2 months appear to be over as the weakness, youth, lack of Hitting has caught up to them .. Hopefully they can get back to playing solid Ball and improve as the Season goes along instead of collectively hitting a “wall”

They actually are playing solid in many ways– they simply don’t have the horses- If you watched you would see that the runs they’ve given up are against really good hitters and the pitchers are just missing out over the plate– everyone knew this was a learning process. Also, if you watched Sherzer last night… OMG— he was awesome– Joseph did hit one on the nose right at a guy—I like his swing. Asche back helps a bit.
As for howard- obviously everyone knows the situation. He apparently is helpful in the locker room and as long as joseph gets his at bats he’s not blocking anyone else– it will be over soon, they will all figure it out.
